If you're brown or darker, this place is not for you. Spend your money anywhere else. I went here a few days ago with my girlfriend, the food was actually good, but the staff had their eyes glued on us the whole time we were there. We got there and sat by the window, which also happened to be by the entrance. Mind you, we weren't starving, just a little peckish, so we split two things, the small combo and the vegan dinner plate. Now before we decided on those items, I had seen the Mediterranean Meza and asked our waiter if it was $27 for two people or $54 for two people. Just to get clarity on the menu. They said it was 2 for $54 and with us both being vegan (not all the items in the Meza are vegan) and not super hungry, we thought it made more sense not to get it. When we decided not to go with the Meza dinner plate, the server had this look on their face that gave me the feeling of "oh they must not be able to afford it" but in an uppity, eye rolling kind of way. Now at first I didn't think much of it, but then my girlfriend told me she felt like we were being watched. She was facing into the restaurant and I was facing the window to see outside the restaurant. Not too long after she mentioned that, I started to notice one of the employees walk outside. I thought he went out to take a smoke break, but then I saw he was just watching us from outside. Not smoking or doing anything but staring HARD at us. I hate when people stare so I chose to stare back with a confused look on my face. Because why did you just walk outside to stare at us while we're eating?? When he noticed me noticing him he IMMEDIATELY turned around to find something to do. Just to make it look he wasn't monitoring us. Also, this man was standing out there staring at us for AT LEAST 5 minutes(literally) before he went to do whatever he "walked out there to do". He also wasn't the only staff member I saw walk in and out the restaurant to watch our table. Now we didn't want to assume it was a racial thing because we wanted to give these wh*te people the benefit of the doubt, but when we started putting the pieces together it was hard to ignore what we knew was going on in their minds. Because of where we chose to sit in the restaurant, and I already know because of our skin tone and how at least I was dressed, they thought we were about to do a dine n dash. That's why they were watching our table so hard/much. There was also one other table in the restaurant, but they weren't looking at them nearly as much as us. On top of that, the server had the ugliest aura around them. I've been a server and understand that servers unfortunately have to work for tips. Knowing that, me personally, I always, no matter how much I might hate the customer or my day, would show up to the table with a smile and a positive attitude. Because at the end of the day my attitude influences my tip. Unfortunately. This server looked like he didn't want to deal with us the second we sat down. All in all, I just wanted to warn my melanated folks, if you're thinking about going here, don't. Give the money to people who don't profile you the second you walk into an establishment and that have staff that make you feel welcome vs them making you feel like you're annoying them or a bother. Also owner if you see this, the waiter was a queer wh*te (or wh*te passing) person who wears thicker rimmed glasses, and that day was wearing a blue and purple cardigan with jeans(?). For dinner I ordered the Middle Eastern Plate. The spinach and feta fillo was definitely the highlight. Nothing else on the plate really stood out to me. The flavors were just okay. The chicken filicia filo was wayyyyyyyyyy to sweet and tasted like a dessert. Powdered sugar on top and everything. The restaurant itself was really cute, well decorated and cozy. By FAR one of the best restaurants I have used. I ordered from La Med for a very important Owners meeting and what was delivered FAR exceeded any expectation I had of the restaurant. From the moment I connected with their team to the moment we finished dessert, the experience was FANTASTIC. The food is fresh, delicious, beautifully presented, and perfect portions (in fact, very large portions). Jeff and Alicia are kind, professional, personable and just overall good people. This is such a cute little Mediterranean spot in the Castro. My friends and I want to celebrate a birthday, and we were not disappointed. There were plenty of delicious options on the menu but we decided to try something called "la meza," which was a sampling of a few of their most popular dishes. The portion sizes are huge and our lovely server David let us know that for a group of six we would be OK with getting four samplers to make sure everyone had food. After all you can always place an order to add more food if needed. He was so right, all six of us were able to eat to our hearts content but the amazing dishes they brought out. The hummus is delicious and they had this yummy pastry that was sweet but savory with chicken inside. The dishes included a variety of vegetarian vegan chicken and lamb. "Must eat healthy"....I wrote that on a post-it, so it must be important to remember, right? Well, I was beginning to notice the post-4th of July, pre-Labor Day pudge came back this year...ok, more like a bulge, not a pudge...yes, that extra layer of "happy fat" that makes me look like the unwanted love child of Rosie O'Donnell and a sumo wrestler...but only a lot older. Jamie W. and I pushed away the family-size Tony's Special at Sausage Factory and went for Mediterranean in this old stand-by. I used to go to the one that was on College in Berkeley for years during the first Bush administration. I always forget that I like the food here, even though it never quite feels like they make anything just for you. They just mix and match stuff they must make in bulk. Not a biggie since most of it tastes the way you want the food to taste. I went for the $11.50 Middle Eastern Plate, which is pretty much their specialty smorgasbord dish of odds and ends. I started with a cup of the Lemon Chicken Soup, which was a bit of a misfire since it was too puckery sour to fully enjoy the creamy broth. The rest was fine though, all in cute petit-four portions. The best was a lamb phyllo concoction that could have been dessert since it was dusted with cinnamon and what tasted like powdered sugar. There was the Chicken Cilicia, which is like a kebab; the Lule Kebab over rice pilaf; and the Levant Sandwich with cream cheese, cucumbers, carrots and tomato rolled into a pita-like bread. Of course, there was a dollop of hummus and some pita triangles for nibbling. All in all, it won't replace a pizza on a self-pity day, but I'll come back. Holy moly! That Pomegranate Chicken is the BEST ever!! Let me preface this by the fact that I don't really like chicken. I eat chicken because it has a smaller carbon footprint and it is a healthier option to red meat. It was lunch time, so I ordered the lunch special Middle Eastern Plate Served with a Cup of Carrot Curry Soup, and my choice of three items. I chose the following: Levant Sandwich Dolma Chicken Pomegranate All this food was for $8.95 with rice, hummus, and a itty bitty salad. When the food was served, the glorious scent of the Pomegranate Chicken swirled past me, and I decided to eat that first. Each bite was fantastically packed with flavor in every little morsel. I believe that was the best tasting chicken that I ever ate! As for the texture, it could have been a little more tender, but I will choose over cooking the chicken over salmonella any day! The Dolma was full of yummy goodness, the grapeleaf wasn't over cooked. The Levant Sandwich has cream cheese, so I couldn't complain. You can see the layers of care that went into the sandwich, and how the dough was baked enough to be cooked, but still soft and tender. The staff was friendly; they checked on us several times. The food was served quickly, and we were pretty much in and out in 30 minutes. I finished my meal, and was satiated, but not full in the greasy gross way. Looking back on my previous review and the way Yelp algorithms have changed over the years, there's absolutely no reason for me not to give La Med five stars. I had lunch here Monday through Friday for YEARS. The wait staff always catered to my unusually rabid thirst and eventually brought a pitcher of water to the table when I would sit down. The coffee is strong and delicious, the pilaf is unmatched, the Chicken Pomegranate is one of the best dishes San Francisco has to offer, and the ambience perfectly conveys the feelings of both a French café and a Mediterranean restaurant. This is my favorite lunch destination in San Francisco, and rightfully so. If Yelp ever adds bonus star micro-transactions, La Med deserves the first one. Truly bad food. Why does anyone eat here in this era of abundant, fresh, well-prepared food? The falafel were dry as dust and literally hard to swallow, even when dunked in the tasteless sauce. I've missed Trevor. He was amazing and was the best server. Knew how to have a conversation and always give the best recommendations. The way he sells food is just chef kiss. Sophia was amazing too. She was easy to talk to and knows what to put together a meal as well. They both have great taste and they both work really well. Then after October just bunch of teens that talk too much and ignore the guests until one of them has to wave them down. I had to wait at least 15 mins to order and wait another 30 mins to tell them they messed up my order. I honestly don't know their names because they didn't really introduce themselves. It was barely busy and yet they chatting at the bar for at least 15-20 mins every time the food came out that's the only time they will give you attention. I know the management's is better than that. Bring back the other servers that they know what they're doing. I'd stop coming because I'm not getting the service I used to get. If you're ordering off La Mediterranee's catering menu, keep your expectations low to avoid disappointment. For a Fall pre-wedding party at our Cole Valley home, I went in person to the restaurant and in detail covered the menu with the catering manager. The large party platter of 120 pieces to serve 30 for $175 only came with 2 out of the 3 items on the platter, and I was told that the remaining item would have to be garnished and prepped by myself. Out of black to-go canisters. The image in the catalouge pictures something VERY different, and I was told by the manager that they discontinued this style 6 months ago and hadn't updated the brochure yet. This is after I already had brought my own tray and made sure that the details were ironed out to avoid things EXACTLY like this from occurring. Bottom line: if you think this is "catering", it's really just takeout. Fine...i would have no problem paying take out prices for what I received. But not catering prices. No platter but just food dumped-in standard to-go containers. And I had too much to coordinate day-of-party to bicker back and forth over images and verbiage with the manager, but needless to say, I wish I had not signed the tip before receiving the tray, as no compensation or rearranging was offered by staff. Falafel itself was dry and unworthy of the restaurant's reputation, and the chicken portions were so small I can't review the taste because there wasn't enough to sample. I've had great experiences within the restaurant itself, but the "catering" was severely disappointing. I'm not somehow who receives Schadenfreudian-glee from posting negative Yelp reviews, but my intentions lie as an informative warning to potential future customers to manage expectations. read more

I've only had the mediterranee meza because I love sampling a variety of things and I loved everything I tried (minus the dolma grape leaves because I don't like those in general). I'm also not a pro on Mediterranean food but this is by far way more exciting than places like 'Oasis.' The setting is very intimate with cute decor, good lighting, and a great view of a busy Market intersection. What I loved about the meza was the diversity in flavors and ingredients. Very unique hummous and baba ghanoush that wasn't too sour or strongly chickpea. The levant sandwiches were on point in taste and texture--almost melted into my mouth upon first bite. Fillos were a bit flakey but still had a great balance of of flavors. Who knew you could make chicken taste dessert-y? Amazing. One sampler was a great portion size for one person. read more
