BE AWARE OF PRICE GOUGING HERE. I would give this place zero stars if I could. I ordered a chicken burrito to go. I drive 22 minutes back to my home in San Jose to eat it. To my surprise it's a tortilla stuffed with chicken NOTHING ELSE. I called and told the man about this his respond was "you have to ask for rice and beans and cheese it doesn't come with it". I asked "so you charge me 11 bucks for a tortilla and chicken" to which the man said "there is tax and a to-go fee". I hung up the phone. I'm sorry but how do you charge a to-go fee I'm literally driving my car and picking it up. Talk about capitalizing on covid-19. I paid a total of 29 dollars and some change for a "chicken burrito" and cheese plate of enchiladas. I think the old man who took my order is the owner very rude every time I call in to order the food. I have been a customer of this place for the past five years excellent food but this experience was it for me I will never come back to la milpa. read more

We came here for dinner about 40 minutes before they closed on a Tuesday. This restaurant was in a plaza where Orchard Supply was along with a few other restaurants so plenty of parking spots. Ever since I came back from my business trip and tried machaca in El Paso, TX, I have been trying to search for an equivalent machaca plate. We both ordered the Machaca ($14.50) and the Burrito de Carne Asada ($8.95). First off, that was a ton of food, but I was planning ahead to eat in between my conference calls the next day while working. The chips and salsa were not bad but I didn't want to fill up on chips. I was saving room for the Machaca. That came out a few minutes later and the plate was pretty big. The Machaca tasted great with everything combined together in the tortilla. It was definitely enough for one person with a big appetite or probably a split between two people who both don't eat THAT much. The Burrito de Carne Asada was good and the meat had a different flavor versus other places that had carne asada. It was probably more of the flavor, but it was still good. It had lettuce and a slice of a tomato which I thought was more to just have something on the plate other than a burrito. Get the Machaca and enjoy! Considering we live in south San Jose and have to drive 20-30 minutes to eat here should let you know how much we love this restaurant. We've been coming to La Milpa for over 25 years! This is my wife's favorite restaurant and we happily make the drive about once a month. As soon as we're greeted by Martha, Ramon, Jr, or Salvador, we feel at home and are treated like family. And the staff are always friendly and work very hard to make sure all is going well. We have some favorites on the menu: Crab & Shrimp Enchiladas, Chimichangas, Tamales, and Camarones. But all the menu is good and I've never been disappointed with any meal here. The chips and salsa (pico de gallo and red salsa) are excellent starters and complimentary! If you are looking for nice night out in a family owned restaurant, give La Milpa a try and thank me later. ; ) read more

La Milpa. I took Spanish so I can translate. It means THE Milpa. Great service and an old-school strip-mall Mexican ambiance (orange glow, clunky wooden chairs). Ate here twice, and both times I got fatty pieces in the carnitas, so I don't recommend them. There's an old saying in Milpitas -- I know it's in San Jose, probably in Milpitas -- that says, fool me once, shame on -- shame on you. Fool me -- you can't get fooled again. It is a restaurant with a lot of cultural ambiance that serves an excellent dinner. My husband enjoyed the burritos and I had the enchiladas with flautas and they were both very tasty. Stopped here because our favorite Mexican restaurant in San Jose was busy. There's not many Mexican restaurants in Milpitas but this seems to be a favorite. My wife was hesitant but it was late so we went for it. I usually order chile verde when I go to a New Mexican restaurant and I wasn't disappointed. The meat was very tender, they used fresh chiles and the rice and beans were good, although I didn't like the bacon taste in the refried beans. They brought me a salad using iceberg lettuce which was ok. The chips were stale and the pico de gallo was not fresh. The red salsa had a good taste but not spicy. Service was very good and the restaurant was very spacious and clean. They offer a few different beers and even Heineken 0 which made me happy. They didn't have menudo or pozole on the menu which is traditionally served on weekends in most Mexican restaurants. Also if you like to indulge in a hard pop (liquor) there were no signs of that here. My wife will sometimes have a Margarita but they only offered one with wine, which she passed on. Delicious Mexican food at a great price. You can't go wrong at La Milpa. La Milpa serves a wide variety of Mexican food at very affordable prices. I came here for a holiday work lunch with a group of eight people. They were very easily able to accommodate our group despite no reservation. I ordered the small combo plate #4 which consisted of one tamale, rice, and beans for $12.95. The portion sizes of the small combo plates are perfect, not too heavy and filling, but just enough so I was satisfied for the remainder of the work day. Some of the other people in my group ordered some of their larger plates which looked very heavy and over filling in my opinion, which is not something I would consider ordering. Service was excellent and the food came out extremely fast especially for a group of our size. They also provide free chips and salsa which is always a plus in my book. Parking was very easy. They have a nice big parking lot that wasn't too busy at around noon on a Friday. I defiantly will be back when I am in the mood for more Mexican food. read more

I REALLY wanted to like this place alot more because their chips and salsa were really good, but the food didn't quite do it for me. Came here on a Friday night before hitting The Galaxy and I got an El Amigo Burrito vibe as I walked in. As I started out, the chips were fresh and delish and both salsas were on point as well. Since it was my first time here, I didn't want to go with my regular burrito order, so I ordered the chicken appetizer nachos as my entree. The food came out fairly quick and the chicken was shredded chicken (not that this mattered, but just in case anyone was wondering) and was also a nice portion. The sour cream and guacamole came on the side, which I assumed would have come on top and there was MAYBE 6 jalapenos on the entire plate. The bottom side of the plate was hot, but the food itself was warm. The beans were refried and seemed to make everything else soggy a little quicker than it should have. If you're looking for some OK Mexican food and haven't been here, then give it a try and see what you think for yourself. This is a great family owned business, The son has taken over from his father, though Poppa can be seen from time to time. Service has always been great, we've never had to wait more than a minute or two to be seated. Though we do tend to come early, around 6:00. Always greeted with a smile, taken to our tables and the wait staff have always been terrific. I do like the salsa as it has a bit of a kick, and I'm a chip lover so that works perfect! We usually go with another couple and have tried most of the menu items. I've never been disappointed with my meal and always leave full and satisfied. The only thing I would like to see changed would be a bit of spice in the Enchilada sauce to give it that zing. Be sure to order their fantastic Margaritas. Best camerones la diabla ( I think that's how its spelled) I have ever had. I crave for this dish. I have been guilty of coming here twice in a week before. Their sauce is the perfect balance of savory, sweet and spicy. Their tortilla comes out fresh and hot. My husband likes their crunchy taco, he says their beef is flavorful. The service is also great, I think the owner is the man standing at the host table. He is always so attentive and brought me more sauce when I said it wasn't enough for me to dip my tortilla. La Milpa has become one of my usual haunts. The food and service continue to be stellar, and the prices rock for a sit down Mexican restaurant. I've tried many items on the menu. Some of my favorites menu items are: Taco Salad: Iceberg lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, beans, and your choice of meat in a crispy flour shell. I ask for my sour cream and guacamole on the side. I also ask for a side of their house Dijon vinegarette. I LOVE it! If you ask for beef- you will get ground beef. I specifically ask for carne asada when I'm in the mood for beef, but typically order chicken. Machaca breakfast burrito: Delicious pork, tomato, chili scramble inside of a fluffy warm flour tortilla. Albondigas: Tender meatballs and veggies in a flavorful broth with a side of warm flour or corn tortillas. Caldo De Res: Tastes like my mama's, and you get a small side of rice and corn or flour tortillas. Nopales Scramble: Mouthwatering chunks of cactus scrambled with eggs. Rice and beans are served on the side. Enchiladas: THE best! I order cheese, but the chicken enchiladas are delicious too. Flautas a La Carte: Big and crunchy. I get my guacamole and sour cream on the side. Chile Relleno: They don't make it crunchy here, but I've been told that most restaurants don't. The salsa that they top the chile with is very tasty! Shirley Temple: Sounds weird- but they are very good here! I typically order small combos because they have plenty of food, and are all under $9. Your familiar combo plates of tacos, enchiladas, tamales, tostadas, burritos, etc mixed in many combinations or a la cart, and single entree specialty plates like chile verde, camerones rancheros, etc. You can't go wrong with any of them. I love their crunchy beef tacos, flautas, and chicken enchiladas. But I'm going to highlight an often overlooked item: the soup. The cocido is the best thing on the menu. It's a ton of soft, fall-apart beef with potatoes, carrots, cabbage, and zucchini, in a nicely seasoned salty broth. It's the perfect hangover cure for you drinkers. 4-stars for the amazing, fast, and kind service! Also, for the HUGE portions + free chips and salsa (also huge). We arrived around 7PM on a weekend night and was surprised to be able to be seated right away. The ambiance is a very warm and home-y feeling. I got the taco bowl (~$9-$10), and my boyfriend got a large combo with 2 tamales, beans, and rice ($13). Like I said, the best part was the huge portions, we were so incredibly full after and didn't even finish all of it! The food itself is good, but not out of the park for me in terms of the spice/marination I expect from Mexican food. Quarantine Eats #8 I've been to La Milpa several times, and I will continue to go when I'm craving Mexican food. I won't declare this place my go-to yet, but a primary location while I continue my search for other Mexican food joints to try out. Service: The cashier was friendly and responsive, and I didn't have to wait long for my food. Someone from the kitchen brought out the food to me. Everything was well packaged for my trip home. Quality/Taste: I'm not a connoisseur of Mexican food, but I think it's solid. I don't stray too far away from chicken or beef enchiladas, tacos, and burritos for the most part. I like their pico de gallo and usually get a side order of it to go with my complimentary tortilla chips. I'm also not a bean lover, so I substitute with extra spanish rice. Overall good enough that I down an entire large combo in one sitting. Price/Value: The big combos average around $15-16 including tax. That's for an entire platter (and I mean a platter!) of food, plus tortilla chips and a small Solo cup of salsa roja. Mexican food is known for being generous in terms of carbohydrates, and this place definitely delivers on that front! Atmosphere: You order at the host stand and wait outside. I didn't spend too much time inside, just to order. From the looks of the inside, it definitely looks like a family restaurant, but I don't see much since the majority of the restaurant is blocked off. Hygiene/Sanitation: They've enacted COVID protocols, such as no masks no service and limited capacity (up to 2 customers inside). I gave my Daughter 2 choices for dinner: Italian or Mexican. She picked Mexican so what did I do? I Yelped for the nearest, cheapest, and best ratings and arrived at La Milpa. We came in around 4:30 and I was surprised to see the restaurant busy (not extremely packed) because it's early but hey, the host seated us at the booth and then seconds later, chips and 2 kinds of salsa were brought out. Hmmm, I forgot), and then for me a big burrito which means: SUPER BURRITO and this time I chose carne asada; normally I prefer pollo. Anyway. While waiting for our orders and still eating the chips and salsa, our nice and super quick ass server asked if I wanted another cup of salsa.. "Um, hell-yes and thank you" was my exact response. Our server.. she then called me, "Honey" the entire time.. she refilled my glass of water like 4 times. I had no idea why I was so perched. The time has come when our order was done and was brought out.. first came the rice, then came the nachos, then came the burrito. Oh Jesus. I was actually shocked when I saw how much I ordered for just me and my Daughter. My eye is always bigger than my stomach so that's what I get. Every chip that was on that plate had a bit of everything on it.. don't you hate it when you order nachos and the only part drenched in yummy-ness are the top? Yeah- this place SCORED w/ nachos! I tried my Daughter's rice and that too was good! I only ate 4-5 bites out of my burrito cause I pretty much finished the entire nachos by myself (OK, my Daughter had maybe 4 bites out of it only). When they say they open at 11am on weekdays, they mean it. The doors literally did not open till after 11am, and once we were seated and provided with menus, we were pretty much immediately asked if we were ready to order. It was kind of funny actually. But no real pressure. The chips were good - crisp and not oily. When I asked which of the salsas were spicy, I was told they both were. Then when I asked if any of the menu items were spicy, I was told that the spice was in the salsa and not on the dishes themselves. That's convenient for a spice wimp! I perused the menu and decided to go with the most exotic thing I could find - the Nopalitos Con Huevos $8.50 (A tasty mixture of diced cactus, fresh ripe tomatoes and onions blended with scrambled eggs, served with beans) - because of the cactus. It came with two tacos - corn or flour - in a covered container. I went with the flour, but also scooped up some of my dish with the corn chips from the basket, which added a nice crisp texture to my slightly sour (that was the cactus I think) dish. Was a lil afraid that this place wouldnt be worth the hype but it definitely did The place is a lil pricey but the taste was fresh and flavorful, and I felt the taste was fairly authentic. Also, they give you chips n salsa so that you arent starving waiting for your food. The guac, sourcream, and sauce they give you with the dishes are especially flavorful more so than other places that ive had, which I was very surprised. Food- Chimichanga- Fried perfectly to a crisp but not overfried. It comes with sourcream and some guac on top but it didnt really need it. The meat wasnt dry and i enjoyed the dish. Crab and shrimp Enchilada- Got this cause im a seafood fan and most Mexican places ive been to dont have crab in their enchiladas. I was glad they didnt skimp on the crab/shrimp. Also the enchilada was flavorful unlike some places. Chile Rellano- Tasted pretty good but it came out a lil soggy. Would have been better if it was still a lil crispy Overall, I enjoyed the taste of the food and id def stop by again when i want some sitdown Mexican. read more

There are plenty of Mexican restaurants to choose from so I usually go by the reviews with four or five star ratings anything less wouldn't be worth mentioning it and La Milpa comes on top for its authentic Mexican meals such as large burrito, tortilla soup, sopapillas (fried sweet pastry comes with honey or cinnamon), and taco salad its service has been outstanding and pricewise very affordable to say the least. Like many other business its take out only and if you're in Milpitas wear a face mask as required. Bro and I came by this morning and there were no customers at that time though the hours have been changed from 8 to 9 in the morning. They had the menu posted out by the window so I order a large tostada salad for $10.95 with shredded chicken, tomatoes, guacamole, lettuce, bean, cheese and avocado slices no sour cream land Bro had taco salad for $9.95 with shredded chicken, cheese, lettuce, diced tomatoes no sour cream as a take )out order it comes with complimentary bag of tortilla chips and salsa. This has been my go to spot since El Burro closed down. The flautas, enchiladas, posole and just about everything is delicious! The service is soo fast (even pre Covid) and the serving size has not changed. They are very generous with the rice, beans and sides. During this time they still make it very easy for to-go orders. They serve the food in plates covered with another plate as the lid and aluminum foil. The sides (salsa, sour cream, guacamole) are in small to medium sized to-go containers [see photo attached]. Our server was nice, polite, and attentive. However, my husband ordered a carne asada wet burrito in green salsa and the so called meat was nothing but the silverskin (collective tissue) of the meat. Very nasty and chewy. The guacamole definitely could use more lime, salt, pepper, onion, and tomatoes. It was very bland! & the red salsa was not authentic. Barely, said anything, rushed, came back a minute later, ready to take our order when We weren't even ready, looked annoyed, walked away. Then, I came back 2 minutes later to see if we were ready. He didn't really have a nice demeanor. Then, I finally ordered. Our food came out. It did look fresh, but man, nothing was seasoned. Food came out pretty fast. However, my burrito fell apart after the first bite, which was annoying. I tried to rewrapped, but I had to eat it with a fork because it was just so messy. La Milpa continues to offer steady good food. Their salsa and chips are delicious and serve as a nice appetizer before the entree comes. The portions are not as plentiful as they use to be. I have been going to La Milpa for 30 yrs. Within the last 4 yrs the prices have gone up, and quality down. My favorite was Beef Frajitas, but was served more vegetables than beef. On 2 separate occasions my stomach didn't agree with the food. It's a shame as my whole family used to go. read more

Ive been here twice and this place is ehh. I ordered a large combo of one crispy chicken taco, one chicken enchilada, rice, and beans. My partner ordered the shredded beef burrito. We also ordered a cup of the chicken tortilla soup. Chicken taco- loaded with cheese, lettuce, and tomatoes, chicken was dry Chicken enchilada- sauce was ehh, nice melty cheese on top, the same dry chicken that was inside of the taco is the one inside the enchilada Chicken tortilla soup- nice melty cheese on top, the broth is nice and good, its the same shredded chicken that was in the taco and enchilada Burrito- really good in size, lots of guacamole, the shredded beef was flavorless and had like a really beefy taste. Nothing special The service was really nice, they provided chips and salsa upon sitting us down at our table. Loved the service but the food was not good enough for us to come back.
