La Milpa was quite a surprising restaurant to say the least. I have not been to enough Mexican restaurants to know what to expect but I was surprised by the final dish I was served. The restaurant itself is mid sized and had a large number of tables for guests. As soon as the six of us sat down, we were given a side of tortilla chips and salsa to snack on. Browsing through the menu, their selection is actually quite typical and small. The menu is long because they have many combinations and variations of the same items. The vegetarian options were the typical burritos, enchiladas, rellenos, and tamales. I finally picked the combination 1, which was a cheese enchilada with a side of veggies, rice, and beans. What they served to me was a large plate of things seemingly to all blend together. I'm not going to say it was a bad thing, it was just different from the way Mexican food had been served to me before. The beans and cheese were almost like melted together to the side. The enchilada wasn't even visible until I started to tackle the cheese. The food itself was good. I finished the whole plate but because it was so melted together and swirled in cheese it felt like a fairly heavy meal. I'm not sure I'd come back but not because the food wasn't good. read more

This review is long over due! My friend and I came here after a great hike for breakfast. We worked up an appetite and we're ready to grub! The place was busy around 11am but we didn't have to wait long to be seated. We quickly ordered the huevos a la Mexicana with an enchilada on the side. We also ordered their Mexican hot chocolate which is super good! The food here is delicious and their service is great. My only regret is not coming here sooner! Ok, honestly this place do have good food, but what left a bad taste in my mouth was the customer service part it. The guy that helped me seemed like he was annoyed because I asked how much a certain item was. Then he smart mouthed me when I questioned the price being lower as a friend told me he had ate there before. I wasn't offered an alternative menu item, like most places would do to accommodate your budget. He had the attitude of "take it or leave it" as if he didn't really care. Again, this place do have good food and is a little pricey. But I would NOT recommend anyone going to La Milpa, solely because of the cocky attitude and poor customer service. There are other Mexican Food restaurants in the immediate area, that also have pretty good food with way better service. Not a taqueria. It a classic sit down Mexican restaurant. One of the only Mexican restaurants in Milpitas. Overall, the food is good. The food will not WOW you, but it does justice for being good Mexican food. Service is fast and food comes out quick. I have been here 2 times and both times the service has been outstanding. This place does not skimp out on portions. All of the portions are fair for their price. Side note, if you ever want to get guacamole as a side with chips. Get the full order!!!! Things to consider in this review: 1. First time here despite living in Milpitas nearly my whole life 2. I don't remember the last time I went to an actual sit-down Mexican restaurant Food here is wonderful! My bf got the chimichanga and I got the chicken enchiladas ranchero. Both were huge portions.The chimichanga was STUFFED with so much meat. The serving is extremely large and I'm surprised my boyfriend even finished the whole thing. The chicken enchilladas was a lot more light in taste but I enjoyed this dish more. Let me tell you, I'm not a fan of refried beans but gosh there's is sooo good. I couldn't stop eating it with the rice. Lastly, they have great customer service! Really wanted to like this place based on the reviews but I couldn't resist, I had to write this review. I either order taco salad or nachos at Mexican places, mostly taco salads. I'm very familiar with them so I knew what to expect. However, this was nothing like most of the ones I had before. The entire dish was BLAND. The beans, the taco salad shell. Pretty quick service. You come in and there is someone right at the front to seat you. You get your menu and within just a few minutes of seating, they serve some bomb chips and salsa. The chips aren't the greatest, but they are pretty good! Fresh and crunchy. It'd be better if they were a little less hard, though. The salsa is amazing. The jalapenos they use are very spicy, so that was good. I ordered a taco salad, which I kind of regretted. It wasn't that great. They use shredded meat, which I really liked. The bowl as a whole was lackluster. The bowl was overall bland, even with the salsa added to it. The flour seemed to be overdone by just a bit. I should have went with the nachos, which was what a friend recommended to me. I was barely eating for 15-20 minutes when the waiter came by to drop off the bill. 3-Stars only bc of the service. I hate places that sit you down and literally three seconds later they ask you are you ready to order. My waiter was also everyone else's waiter when I ate during this random afternoon. He didn't check on my table often and when I asked for things I only could say one thing at a time. You know when they start walking away immediately as you tell them something versus waiting for you to finish? And then it's annoying bc you have to break your requests up according to the times they stop by (and they rarely do) I ordered the Cocido (Sopa de Res) it was good but not great. I ordered a side of beans which were delicious and my fresh flour tortillas that came with the cocido were really good. The soup comes with two tortillas and a side of rice and a lemon or lime. Not your run of the mill Cal/Tex-Mex restaurant. They make their own salsas and create Mexican recipes beyond tacos and burritos. It's better than average and far better than any chain restaurant. Maybe because of California taste buds, or just family recipes, I found they use too much cream sauce, though it is good to see something more than the ubiquitous red sauce on everything. Service is pretty quick for both times that I've been here. The menu is quite expansive, and they even do breakfast entrees which is available all day. For some reason, I've always gotten a hankering for the breakfast dishes. I've tried the Papas con Chorizo plate which is eggs, potato, chorizo meat and a side of refried beans and your choice or corn or flour tortillas. The portion is huge and filled me to the brim. I've also tried the Machaca which is shredded beef with eggs, onions, bell peppers, and sides of rice & beans, and your choice of tortillas as well. The menu also indicated that any of the breakfast dishes can be made into a burrito. Everything I've had has been super flavorful, and man the chips are great. La Milpa is a family owned restaurant located in a strip mall near the abandoned Orchard Supply Hardware. We were there on a cold late-fall evening which made warm food a must. We were not seated promptly because the person behind the counter was processing receipts and filling a phoned-in to go order. I got the feeling that the restaurant was understaffed that evening. Once seated with menus, chips & salsa was was delivered to the table. Chips and salsa tasted fresh with just the right amount of heat from spices. We ordered tortilla soup, chicken enchiladas, and chimichanga. Tortilla soup is the perfect cold weather, rainy-day, meal. Enchiladas were well prepared and smothered in a delicious red sauce. This is my go-to spot for solid Mexican food in the South Bay! It's a homey mom and pop feeling place that has all the different Mexican food cravings you desire (plus awesome chips and salsa!) I live in a different state. But for my whole life I've been coming here every time I visit family. They never disappoint. My favorite things are the menudo or the tamale. The masa for the tamale is well seasoned and the meat is tender. The menudo is so silky smooth and just awesome! Though I recommend that if you haven't tried menudo before, try it elsewhere. The bowl is rather large and it's kind of an acquired taste because of the traditional ingredients. But if you already like menudo, go for it!!! Came here with a party of 6 for a birthday dinner. Despite a bigger party, it was slow enough to get seated right away. The service was quick, the food was great, and since it was slower they let us be to just have a conversation after our meal. It's a nice place, but I wasn't super impressed by the food. I felt it lacked the flavor that Mexican cuisine is known for. Some might enjoy it as it wasn't very rich in flavor, nor bland. However, personally, if I want to have Mexican food, that's because I want to enjoy the authentic taste. I am so disappointed writing this post as I have been coming to La Milpa for over 20 years. The food is incredible and consistent. As for the servers, I think they try their best and can see more pressure on them over the years. I also do not think they treat all their customers the same, so I started ordering to go (simply because the food is that good). During COVID, I think the older gentleman in the front is the owner, and has been very rude over the phone multiple times. I again let it go due to the food being so good. When I arrive to get my food, the price has been elevated and unexpected so I've asked the owner to review the total (this has happened 3 times so far). Not ONCE have I been told of a to-go / carry out fee. I called again today and spoke to someone else (not the owner) and they confirmed there is a fee for picking up your food and they are NOT advertising it!!!!!! After 20 years, this is the last straw. I LOVE the food at this place, but can no longer return do to this and all of issues. read more

I had to put a stop to my craving and called into La Milpa for a to go order on Sunday morning for breakfast. I would have liked to eat there, but I was in a hurry to get to work, so pick up had to do. They were extremely polite on the phone, and my order was said to be ready in 10 minutes. When I walked in, the wonderful smell of Mexican food filled my nostrils and it was heavenly! It wasn't as crowded as I expected it to be, and I was upset that I called the order rather than eating there. But anywho, my order was ready, I paid and left. Now to the food...they gave me a bag full of chips (extremely generous and not stingy) with 2 types of salsas, both flavorful! My breakfast order of chorizo and potatoes was fantastic! It was a big plate full of chorizo with eggs, and potatoes and the other side with beans and tortillas on the side. I don't understand how this place could be rated so highly. It's incredibly average if that. The service was incredibly mediocre. Food was even more un rave worthy. Starting with the salsa - in which the tomatoes were soggy and gross..everything which followed was just not good. We tried three things: - Tortilla soup which was extremely salty. - Crab and Shrimp Enchiladas which we're totally bogus. The sauce was not real enchilada sauce and the crab meat and small bay shrimp were just flavorless and blah. - Our son's cheese quesadilla was really the only thing on the table which was decent - it came with rice and beans and a juice and he was happy. I've had a long history with La Milpa and recently I returned after a 3+ year hiatus and you know what has changed? Absolutely nothing...which is a fantastic thing given the typical fluctuations a restaurant goes through over time. On this particular, Sunday, the lunch hustle and bustle was as I remember it, packed and extremely busy. Service was friendly but I could tell they were probably handling a lot more tables than they would have liked. I went with my what used to be my usual, crispy hardshell chicken tacos and everything on my plate tasted like it was cooked with an old treasured recipe in someone's kitchen at home.
