My bro and sis heard about this place; they have vegetarian "chorizo" on the menu. So, last minute decision, we headed out to the journey to the Commerce location. Okay, hope this doesn't offend, but we were the only 3 Asians in the entire plaza. Seriously. But we're adventurous, let's do this. When we first walked in, I was surprised that this bakery did not smell sickly sweet. What brought a chuckle was the lady behind the counter automatically busted out Spanish to take our order. I know I had the deer in headlights look; I had to excuse my ignorance of the Spanish language. Now that communication lines were open, we were free to order food. The bakery had pre-made stuff in the little tightly sealed boxes. There's a stack of aluminum pizza pans and tongs to collect these little treats. One thing I noticed, there's no place to return the used tongs. I'm not a clean freak, but I would prefer to know that the tongs are wiped down after use and don't have weekold sugar or chocolate flakes on them. After picking up some pastries and croissant, we headed to the counter to order some hot food. We ordered vegetarian "chorizo" torta and quiche. I also got a large jamaica drink. First, service... aside from the assumption I know Spanish and briefly forgetting my quiche, it was decent. The two ladies working on a Sunday afternoon seems to be prepping for the busy upcoming weekday. And besides, it's a bakery. Next, environment... plenty of parking. All the tables and chairs are clean. The coffee station is clean. Best thing, there are no flies inside the display cases (I'm looking at your El Gallo Giro, last time I was at El Gallo Giro, a pigeon fly into the restaurant!). Finally, the food... pastries were delightful. Not too sweet and very flaky and light. The chocolate croissant was very good, buttery and flaky without the grease. The veg. "chorizo" torta was a little messy. The torta bread was crusty which forced the filling out as you're eating. The veg. chorizo was a little bland and seem to be pre-cooked. When it was served, it was barely hot. I think they took a microwave to it. The veg. chorizo quiche was interesting. The egg mixture was very light and fluffy; and they intentionally layered the quiche. The veg-chorizo was not mixed into the egg, it was on the pie crust. The layered effect allowed you to taste the egg mixture and chorizo independently (almost). We also purchased some slices of cake home. I didn't have any, but my sister said they were pretty good. Bottomline, I think I can make the veg chorizo myself. Nothing really fancy or awe-inspiring. The pastry, and cake, are pretty good. I wouldn't make a special trip to get it, but I'll definitely keep it in mind if I passing the area. read more

Came by to get a cake for my husbands birthday. Customer service was great but the $35 8" fruit? milk and berries cake I got was borderline disgusting. The cream part was ok but the cake part tasted like something that's been left in the fridge too long, refrigerator burn? No one at the party finished their slice of cake and we threw it away. The strawberry cake is HEAVEN ON EARTH. It is the best cake I have ever eaten. This is probably what the forbidden fruit in the garden of Eden tasted like. I almost feel guilty eating it. I always get my cakes here! The cakes are not overpowered in sweetness. They have that perfect taste. They let you have samples of cakes before buying. My mom loves their cake made out of fruits. The cake reminds me to the authenticity of the cakes that I would eat in Puebla! My mom hates sweets but approves of these cakes and only wants cakes from here. We stopped in for breakfast with friends on a recent Saturday morning. 4 adults, 4 kids. 3 of us wanted coffee and one kid is a super picky eater. Excellent choice for breakfast! My husband and I each chose the breakfast tacos and were not disappointed. The machaca tacos were excellent! (Tacos for breakfast is a winner!) My teenager ordered the ham and cheese croissant - a tasty and unusual find for a Mexican bakery. I opted for the blended Oaxacan coffee to drink. Delicious breakfast and lunch. Above average coffee and they carry a variety that you can't order at the big name coffee places. I like the ice blended Cafe Guaymas--refreshing! Came across La Monarca in Commerce since this is the city they live in. i went to this location it was clean, quiet and the 2 girls working there where nice. I had never been or tasted anything from this bakery so i asked to try about 4 different cakes. She was real kind and patient with me not once did i feel like my questions or request bothered her. All cakes were really good tasting and not to sweet (I prefer it that way), I ended up buying a 3 leches cake and a iced coffee. So disappointed in this place. It use to be our favorite neighborhood bakery. The selection of bread and food items was simple yet amazing. The attention to detail was what set this apart from the plethora of bakeries in our neighborhood. But recently it has all changed. I understand that shops can have a bad day but that's not the case here. Unfortunately it's become a trend. It's now hit and miss. Half the time they don't have half the items on the menu. The bread has morphed into a shell of what it use to be. If they have it on the shelf, it looks completely different and tastes different than before. Even the service has taken a turn. Now it's attitude and unfriendly faces. I see Monarca bakeries opening everywhere. And i couldn't be happier and prouder of the whoever the owner is because they have created a successful business and are setting an example for others to follow. It might be a case where it's growing too fast and now the attention to detail is no longer possible. I went to eat my breakfast this morning and spent $45.00 with a cake , coffee etc my car was in front of the store and one of the employees was blocking my car I asked him to move because i need to leave pickups my kid . He was so aggressive and rude . And he told you have to wait 10 or 20 . So I called the cops . 20 minutes later cops came and they told him to move . At the end I spent 30 minutes for nothing . Very bad experience. I bought a birthday cake and it was not decorated with no whip cream in other words incomplete. The cake taste horrible like if they made three days ago. The employees very rude. The fact that their other locations DO but this one doesn't is what's so ridiculous, especially considering this location is double the size of the South Pasadena one which DOES have porcelain mugs. Been coming here for about a year and a half every time I travel to LA. Without a doubt, this place has the absolute BEST cinnamon rolls I've ever had. Nice and crisp, but still fairly soft, not caked in so much icing that it drowns out the roll, and packed with flavour! They also have great conchas, cookies, and this one pastry with a chunk of dark chocolate stuffed inside. Every pastry I've had here has been exceptionally good without fail and their tea is to die for too. But what makes this place a home run is how affordable it is. I can get almost a dozen pastries for less than $20! I honestly feel like I'm robbing the places with how low their prices are! The only thing there that's pricey in my experience is their guava marmalade which is made by a third party but so worth the price. All in all, this place gets a well earned 5 stars from me. Now the only reason why I'm knocking them down one star is because I came in to grab a bite to eat and I was quite excited because I had been wanting to try the food here, and it seems as if everything on the menu has onion! I visited on a Monday morning on an empty stomach. I ordered the vegetarian chorizo torta and iced hibiscus + mango tea. I had high hopes for the torta but it didn't cut it for me. It lacked flavor and I could barely taste the cheese. The green salsa they give you was really tasty though. As for the tea, it was amazing!
