If ever in Montebello, be sure to stop at Chapala Bakery. This bakery specializes in Mexican sweet bread, and they know how to do it well. As a first-time visitor, I had no idea what to expect when I walked in with my sister and daughter. I was surprised by how big this bakery was and how many bread options it offers customers. I purchased several pieces for myself and took a sample from each piece. Each piece of bread was soft, fresh, and absolutely delicious. Being a lifelong fan of Mexican sweet bread, I can truly appreciate the bread sold here. The young lady who assisted us was very friendly, outgoing, and helpful. Prices were very affordable, which can be dangerous, as I was so tempted to buy many more pieces of bread than the six or seven I purchased I will definitely return soon. read more

Made a stop here because I was in the area getting a car wash. The bread was really dry and had no flavor, and when I say dry like so dry you can't swallow it. The bakery seems very clean because as soon as you open the door you get a strong smell of cleaning product. Which was odd as usually you walk into a bakery and smell fresh bread. Maybe the bread wasn't fresh which is why there wasn't a smell. I'm not sure, however I will not be purchasing bread from here again. read more

Some of the best pan dulce I've had. We went in at 7:45pm and they had just brought out a second wave of trays of pan. It was very stocked. Everything was super warm and delicious. The smell of the place when you walk in is mesmerizing and intoxicating as you're greeted with the smell of warm, freshly baked breads and cookies. This is my go-to pan dulce spot in East Los Angeles! Chapala Bakery #1 is known for their large menu of fresh, authentic, and cheap Mexican baked goods. They open early, busy themselves with new batches of pan dulce, and keep almost every shelf stocked! I was surprised that they had a lot of popular pastries around noon! I always leave with a huge bag and can't stop recommending this place. Their staff are also super sweet and maintain the store well. Las personas que despáchan el pan , preguntas por mas pan y te voltean aver con una cara como si les estuvieras pidiendo las cosas de gratis no se por que las personas que atienden ahi , sus jefes los dueńos no ven la actitud de los empleados Con los clientes. Still return to this bakery even though I moved away. Needed a bunch of deliciousness for a morning event and got 2 dozen items for $25. They accept credit cards. The baked goods sell themselves no need to really even post adjectives on the bread. If I'm standing in a line at 830am with 7 people in front of me this place is worth making a trip to (line goes quickly). read more

Best authentic Mexican bakery to grab Mexican bread, coffee, milk etc. I went to grab bread for my grandma & for my parents.. so many choices to pick. They make all the bread fresh. I was at an event in ELA and found this bakery on the way. Decided to stop in and try it. The ladies working there were really friendly. They had a huge selection and everything was super fresh. I picked out a few pieces, some for me and some for my son who loved conchas. We dont like trying a new place only to find all the pan is really dry. That was not the case here! Everything we got was soft and moist and excellent. Highly recommend this panaderia! read more

Putting a one star since there is nothing less Went in on a busy day for the rosca de Reyes knowing there would possibly be a wait the young lady in the front tells me there is no more some people preordered at the moment to come back in an Hour it's 1:15 so I am to return at 2:15pm Wait around make time to come back and she tell me there is no more roscas they are all being used for previously made orders I asked her why didn't she mention that to be earlier I would have never wasted my time to come back she continued to be condescending so of course I got an attitude hello communication first rule of customer service !! Then tells me something in English thinking I'm not bilingual how rude to be a hispanic bakery ! What must she say to people who don't speak the language at the end tells me she's the daughter of the owner ! There seems to always be a line, but it is warranted! The pastries seem very fresh and during COVID they are limiting the number of people entering. Someone helps you pick out what you want (not self-service) and then you pay. I tried a variety of sweet breads, and the conchas are soooo soft and delicious. Everything is very affordable. I will say that the puff pastry I got was kind of hard already, maybe people don't buy that as often. The pineapple jam inside was delicious though. read more

Honestly, this place is okay. One of the issues that I've had with this particular place is that depending who rings you up, you will get charged differently. Some charge you more then others it's just whoever you get. So PLEASE be careful! I've spoken with other customers and they'd had the same thing happened to them. They are notorious for this!! This place is infested with rats as well. read more

A coworker raves about this place. I didn't feel like making the trip over to El Gallo is ELA so I went here. What a hidden gem. Their Mexican bread was soft and amazingly good. Apple turnover and croissant bread were -dare I say it-better than El Gallo. Definitely worth a try and compare. Highly recommend. read more

Don't get me wrong, what we ate was very good; however, it was 100% not Tres Leches. It was an Ube Cream with some graham cracker crumble underneath. If you can't snag a spot at the curb, there is also a small parking lot at the front of the block, or around back. When you turn onto Garfield, make another right into the parking lot. Love this little bakery shop and would definitely be coming back for all my pastry needs. They also sell some really cute cakes!
