The food here is pretty good, but the prices have almost doubled on some of the items since they opened less than a year ago so we were surprised to see current prices being so different from online menus. Although the food is good, it's not special or fancy enough to warrant the prices. And the service was almost nonexistent. Waitress came by a few times throughout the meal, but didn't check to see if we needed another round of drinks even though we were long finished and had to flag her down to bring us water. Cool spot in terms of music and decor, the food tasted great, and the service was friendly. The waitress was on top of our waters. Dropped in on a Thursday night after reading about their soft opening. Looks really similar to Geinki, but definitely a nice refresh! In love with the FLOS lighting!! Food was really good - shaking beef, special fried rice, crispy imperials rolls!! Yum. The spicy lemon vermicelli was good, but not super special. Everyone was so nice and helpful. Felt like eating a friends house or real family restaurant. They cared if we had a good time and wanted to make it happen. Couple tables had birthdays and the staff would make a big production of it with 50 Cent. It sounds cheesy but was actually fun the way they handled it. The music got louder and dancy later in the evening. Reminded us of nyc restaurants that pick up their tables and turn into bars late at night. We are super excited about that! We did not have a reservation and we sat at the bar! That is the best thing that could have happened to us. Christine is a top mixologist! The servers are excellent people and have great business skills! The food was excellent and served promptly! The Imperial rolls were spot on! The papaya salad was good too, as was our vermicelli shrimp and pork dish. (Maybe a little more tang/citrus is in order? Some more mint and or cilantro on the plate might would make it absoloutely perfect.) The cocktails are tops!!! Christine and Jennifer know what they are doing and are super professional! The food was delicious but pricey. The service was definitely below par. I would give the food 4 stars but the service was no more than 2,if that. My husband's order of shaken beef came out a full 10 minutes before my order of shaken tuna. When we asked our server why she brought his and not mine, she said the chef was still working on it. When we asked why our meals couldn't come out together, she replied, "I don't know what to tell you." That's all--no apology, no "I'll check with the chef to see what the status is". Also, the menu item was titled as yellowfin tuna, while the description underneath referred to bluefin tuna. We like both, but asked about the discrepancy and she simply replied that she didn't know. I popped by va highland to check out the local plant store and bookstore. I was drawn to this quaint place because i they have a windowless bar facing the street. I walked in and was taken by the ambiance, low key but nicely decorated. I ordered the shaking beef lunch special and was blown away. I've been looking for great Vietnamese spots in Atlanta but have not been impressed until I discovered this place. The Shaken Beef was very tender, flavorful and well balanced. I got the Pho Tai with no cilantro. They put cilantro in both the noodles and broth. The broth was murky and the filet-yomamma was over cooked as hell. Way to over priced for the portion you get. noodles were also limp, and very much over cooked. -20 hot girl points. read more

I have been looking forward to eating at Mai Kitchen and had dinner there recently with another couple. The space is great but the food and service is pretty hit or miss (though in fairness they were having staffing issues the night we had dinner that undoubtedly contributed to the service issues - I will say also that our waitress was perfectly friendly). As you know, Mai Kitchen is an "upscale" Vietnamese restaurant in Virginia Highlands offering a smattering of noodles, phos, curries, and standard fare appetizers/starters. And unlike the typical hole-in-the-wall Vietnamese restaurant on Buford Highway, Mai Kitchen also offers a cocktail program of sorts. Overall, this was at best a mediocre experience. The cocktails were not very good and certainly not what you would expect for $13-15 a pop. And the quality of the food ranged considerably. As for starters, the papaya-mango salad w/little shrimps was very good, but the chicken spring rolls were laughably bad. The rolls honestly tasted liked badly reheated frozen ones--and though they weren't quite inedible, they were unappetizing. For mains, my dinner date and I got the shaken beef and shaken tuna to share. The shaken beef was quite good (though too salty). But the shaken tuna was disgusting - overcooked to the point of being tasteless and bathe in some overly salty fish sauce - it was truly terrible. Our companions ordered a pho and grilled shrimp & pork noodles and seemed generally pleased, but nobody raved about their meals. For overall average (or significantly below average) dishes and relatively small portions, the food was quite expensive for what it was. We skipped dessert. I hadn't realized before I ate here that this was another Alex Kinjo establishment, but it makes sense - there's a lot of style and not much substance (and a lot of inconsistency). Service somewhat slow. One of our 2 dishes was not warm when wait staff brought to our table. Food decent but I've had much better Vietnamese food on Buford Highway for half the price. If you are gluten free, think twice about going to this place. There are only 2 or 3 GF items on the menu. Every other Vietnamese restaurant I've been to, both in Atlanta, and in Vietnam, have mostly GF dishes. Everything was perfect and honestly best meal I've ever had in my life - the special curry pot with shrimp was the perfect sweet and spicy curry combination. I also loved the amount of green veg in the pot as some places tend to just do sauce and shrimp and minimal veggies. I will for sure be back and hope it lands on the main menu.
