A new addition to the Virginia Highland area and offers a wonderful and authentic flair to the Asian cuisine in the neighborhood. With a full bar, mai has traditional/ authentic Vietnamese dishes like pho (beef $19) and Bahn mi ($12), with a couple appetizers and great vegan friendly dishes (lemongrass tofu $19). Bahn mi has one of the most quality meats ever. The lemongrass chicken was originally with vermicelli but subbed for rice. The eggrolls in the rice dish was sort of hard. The carafe of hot sake ($15) was fairly gross lol I would omit to something else like a lychee martini ($12). Service was decent with an open kitchen. Will def be back! read more

Food was good - flavors were all around satisfying. Seafood platter came with a sauce that was very unique and tangy. Soup was slightly above average. A bit spicy, but just right. Beef platter was slightly below average. Flavor left a bit to be desired, and platter felt a bit overcooked. Portions were quite small for the price point - had to double up. read more

I think this is a place that one dish could be a 5/5 and another could be a 3/5. We ordered the Vietnamese style wings to start and they were tasty, I recommend. Then we both got vermicelli noodles. Don't get this dish if you want a ton of flavor. It wasn't bad, just boring. Def a cleaner dish and I can't fault them too much on it, I just wish it had more to offer. Drinks were just okay. Service was decent, nothing amazing, nothing bad. I probably won't be back because it wasn't good enough for the price, but it wasn't a bad meal. read more

Really nice and romantic spot for Asian cuisine. I ordered the curry which theu advertised as spicy but in my opinion wasn't at all. They bought out some Chiklis for me to add to it and that really made it soicyblike I like. The salt and pepper wings were delicious on their own but my friend and I asked for a side of the sauce thay comes on their other wing flavors to dip them in and they tasted pretty good that way as well. Our server was super attentive and friendly. We chatted with her a bit about the area and other restaurant the owner had. Can't wait to visit again. Those wings alone will keep me coming back. The food has some Vietnamese elements but is definitely more Thai oriented than Vietnamese. My group ordered the wings which were tiny and the steamed dumplings which were quite bland. I ordered the Tom yum soup which was very watery/ lacked flavor and also tried the Tom kha soup which was similar in quality. My lemongrass tofu was very good though. Mai kitchen will definitely one of my go-to restaurants in the Inman park area. I really enjoyed my meal here and the drinks. The fresh fruit on top of the drink was so fresh and amazing! The only thing I have negative to say about this restaurant is that it's small so the tables feel very close together. I felt like the couple next to us could hear our whole conversation. Finally got to check Mai Kitchen off my list! The decor here is so nice. Nice dinning spot for ladies night. They have 4 dinning areas: plenty of seating at the bar, there's limited table top seating at the front of the restaurant which looks on to N. Highland Ave. During the spring/summer they open the windows and it gives you a bit of an indoor/outdoor vibe. That seating area is coveted when it's nice out. There's a long row of seating along the wall of the restaurant and a fabulous well decorated patio in the back. For dinner I ordered the coconut curry chicken. The food was really good. I will say I was disappointed with the portion. My dinner didn't contain much much meat and you can see the amount of rice they provided and the cost of another bowl of rice was $4. read more

I was looking for somewhere nearby to have Thai food and this restaurant came upon my search. I'm so glad that I found it. I was able to park right on the street in front of the restaurant which was convenient. There is paid street parking and free street parking in the neighborhood. The restaurant has kind of like a garage door so you can be sitting inside and outside at the same time. I ordered the The panag chicken, it was really good. Everything I ordered was excellent. service was great. They actually closed midday, but I was on my computer doing some work and I didn't realize that and they let me stay which was really nice. I appreciated that. I recommend this restaurant anytime you're in Virginia Highlands. read more

Lemongrass tofu is one of the best dishes I've had in a while! The fresh spring rolls are also quite filling, and available with different proteins. A few of the drinks can be made virgin, and menu is clearly marked for allergens and restrictions. It was pretty empty on a Thursday at opening time, so service was quick and our waitress was so attentive and thoughtful with her curated suggestions based on our preferences! Came here for a girls dinner and really loved it! We ordered the gyoza which were tasty and i got the pad thai with tofu which was also tasty, hot, and had a little kick to it which I liked. An elegant Vietnamese bistro occupying prime real estate in Virginia Highland, we found La Moon to exceed all our expectations on a recent Friday evening happy hour. We stopped in and sat at their intimate and gorgeous bar, with art deco and Indochinese touches. She had the margarita, while I had the Midnight Moon, a fancy little drink topped with a red feather, making for a fun experience. From the kitchen, we shared the fried tofu and the stir-fried green beans, both of which were perfect and made for a nice, light happy hour snack. La Moon is the perfect spot in the neighborhood for classic Vietnamese eats with a whole lot of flair. read more

My fiancée and I came to La Moon for dinner Saturday around 4pm and sat at the bar. We were greeted by Ben, the bartender. He was super nice and accommodating. Ben was very familiar with the menu. So, we went with his recommendations. We ordered some apps and drinks, before our entrees. Ben made the most delicious drinks! I wanted to try some of the hand-crafted cocktails on the menu and he nailed every one! We ordered a cheese roll, La Moon wings, Crab fried rice, and the Ginger Fish. *Mind blown* the food was SOOO good!! Everything was fresh, hot and delicious. Ben's recommendations did not disappoint! Mai Kitchen replaced Genki Sushi in the VA Highlands main strip. It has a slightly upscale ambiance, but the layout remains mostly unchanged. The restaurant was serving a "soft open" menu when we visited, and unfortunately, some of the options even on this limited menu were not available at the time. The pho broth was fairly flavorful; portion on the smaller side for typical pho establishments. It's served with cilantro, scallions, and some other herbs already in the bowl - I know some don't care for that. Vermicelli bowls are usually my go to, but they did not have them that night. I had the lemongrass tofu stir-fry instead, which is served with a small bowl of rice. What they do not share on the menu is that the dish is totally dry fried - the tofu is individually fried and very crispy, and there is zero sauce. I found myself reaching for a lot of water and my partner's broth not because of the spice but just to get such a dry meal down my throat. Service was true 3-stars; generally missed basics such as refilling water, but the food came out fairly quickly and was overall okay. Recognizing that it was a soft open, I do hope the kinks are worked out. This is a city with a fast growing number of options for Vietnamese cuisine, so there is some work to be done here. read more

What a lovely spot! We walked by headed to another restaurant and just couldn't pass this place up. We lucked out with free parking on the street (yes I said free) so we sat on their porch which was open and quite pleasant. The service was very friendly, the drinks were good and they even had milk stout for my hubby (score!) we split the dumplings which were so flavorful! Mai Kitchen was soo delicious and the perfect meal for a Saturday night in Virginia Highlands. We sat on the super cute bar open to the street and enjoyed great food and wine. We loved the people watching. For meals we got Shaken Beef and Lobster Garlic Noodles. Both were so incredible. Service was great but the bar was definitely full and they only had 1 bartender working. Since we were in the bar section, we did not receive too much service but everything was great and I cannot wait to try more on the menu !! read more

I visited here on my birthday and I must say the ambience of this place was beautiful! We had a server that was in training, and he was pretty awesome to say he was new. Everyone was extremely polite and welcoming literally from the time we walked in. I ended up getting the grilled salmon and it was pretty good, but the ginger fish was a 10/10 for sure!!!! We visited Mai kitchen for the first time a couple weeks ago after wanting to try it for months. What a disappointing experience. It took forever to get our drinks, we had to ask the server 3 times. The Pad Thai was decent, however we asked for our stake medium rare and it came out entirely raw. When we sent it back, it took no more than 30 seconds to return the exact same thing. The picture included is AFTER we had already sent it back requesting medium rare again. At this point we decided to go elsewhere for a meal. The service was decent but over all very slow and the food and drinks mediocre for this price point. read more

The service was excellent. They have a very nice wine, cocktail, and mocktail list. I had the purple rain, light and bubbly. My friend enjoyed her gingery King's Ransom. The menu is Chinese and Asian fusion, and a short list of sushi. Chinese is always meant to be shared. We had the miso truffle salmon and each of the steam buns to start. I thought the salmon was very good, I do not normally like capers, but liked the way they prepared them. The katsu was probably the best of the buns, nicely crispy. The tofu was good a well, with a nice kick, the young one in our group found it too spicy. I would not order the short rib again, it was fine, but I've had much better short rib. We then had the chicken satay, roti canai, and the miso cod. The chicken satay had good flavor, and paired well with the peanut sauce and pickles. I did find it a bit too fatty. The miso cod was perfectly cooked, and the flavor was just right. Note that it is a very small portion. The best dish was the roti, a yellow curry with chicken and veggies with two flaky peice of roti. So good. The star of the meal though was the mango sticky rice, with sorbet and small bits of mochi. This is one of the best versions I've ever had. Do not miss this dessert! The issue I had with our visit is we, a group of three, were seated by the door, which was also near the kitchen door. The seating felt cramped, and every few minutes one of the doors was slamming, which made it a less pleasant experience. There were also several other tables open that we could have been seated at instead.

For food, we ordered the 777 Platter, which came with Crispy Rice Tuna, Salt and Pepper Shrimp, and Isan Fried Chicken. Everything on the platter was good, but the Salt and Pepper Shrimp was the dish that really stood out. It was perfectly seasoned, crispy, and full of flavor. The Isan Fried Chicken was also a must-order. It had great texture and was one of those dishes that makes you want to keep going back for another bite. Spring rolls- very crispy and flaky, had the "sea floor" variety of seafood inside, flavorful 3 sauces to go with it Crab beignets- a slightly cheesy and airy beignet with a genius crab dip blend. The whole table was surprised on how good it was. Shrimp appetizer- the best "bang bang" shrimp I've had. Shrimps are very large and has a nice fruit salsa to go with. Everyone at the table loved their entrees but I can only truly speak for the ones I tried. Seafood Curry- I will NEVER eat curry anywhere else! I LOVEEEEE THIS CURRY! All the seafood is so fresh, the curry is so flavorful that I literally slurped the rest off my plate. There was also such a variety of veggies in there that were also very fresh and firm (not soggy). For the price especially, you get sooooo much and with such a thoughtful recipe. According to our waitress, it's the only recipe that hasn't changed since the restaurant opened in 2012! Fried chicken - I didn't try the chicken itself, but I did try the Mac and cheese and greens that came with it. Let me tell you, I am very picky about Mac and cheese and this rivals the best Mac and cheese I've had in Atlanta (toast on Lenox)! The greens were also fantastic and flavorful, but a little on the sweet side if that's what your preference is. For dessert, all 4 of us shared one slice of the suspension cake and couldn't even finish it! It was ginormous (literally the size of your head). I won't even go into details- just order it! The ambiance is so intimate and unique- not feeling like an "uptight" boujie restaurant, but curated and thoughtful. They have very nice seating outdoor that is enclosed as well as a beautiful bar area. Lastly, the service is fantastic. It was just as delicious as it sounds. 2nd visit - Tacos The pastor con queso and the shrimp al pastor with cheese, onions, and al pastor sauce. You're welcome. 3rd visit - Fajitas Fajitas Texanas, with steak chicken and shrimp. There are 7 different combinations of sides that you can get. We got white rice, salad, and charro beans. This can also be shared, which my wife and I did. Speaking of the charro beans, they have the best beans I have ever had. For drinks I got the supreme regular mango margarita. My wife got strawberry. Both great. Service Food came out fast, but other than that the service was a little slow. Our waitress was nice, but it did seem that she forgot about us for a little while. The food was so good that I forgave it, plus at the end of the day I got everything I needed. Verdict If you're looking for amazing food and drinks, this is absolutely the place to get it. While I had high expectations, unfortunately, the dishes did not meet my expectations. Firstly, I opted for the grilled lemongrass pork, which, upon arrival, had a strong aroma of kerosene. This was quite off-putting, as it overshadowed any other flavors that the dish might have had. Furthermore, the quality of the pork did not align with what I anticipated from a restaurant of this caliber, especially considering the price point. The meat lacked tenderness and succulence, leaving me disappointed. The entree also included crispy imperial rolls, which were a letdown as well. It was evident that these rolls were not freshly made, as they were hard and unexpectedly chewy. The texture greatly detracted from the overall enjoyment of the dish. I couldn't even finish the entrée and I ended up throwing it away. On a positive note, I did order the crispy imperial rolls separately, and I must admit that they were surprisingly decent and enjoyable. They had a satisfying crunch and a flavorful filling that helped redeem the dining experience to some extent. Regrettably, I cannot provide a review of the Vietnamese chicken salad as I had intended to have it for lunch tomorrow. However, based on the underwhelming taste of the pork, my expectations for the salad are not particularly high.
