We haven't been into this location for well over a year. It's much better than it had been for awhile. The inside is improved, the service was prompt, polite, and accurate, and the food was actually pretty great. The shredded beef in the quesadilla rellena was not overly fatty but also not dry. It's my mistake for not checking the reviews before going here. The majority of them were correct. We walk in and the place smells like a dirty mop was run over the floor. Waited by the front desk a couple minutes until someone realized we were there. Those 2 things should have been red flags and we should have left right then and there. The service was good, but the corn shell tacos were too greasy. We visited a La Nopalera in Orange Park had much better food, so we assumed this one would be consistent. I had moved here from San Antonio, Tx where the Mexican food was the best I have ever had. That said, if I was comparing La Nopalera to the SA, Tx Mexican food, I would give it a -5 stars. This time we ordered 3 dinners (#5) to go and a pint of queso all to go. Living less than 5 minutes from there, when we got home the food was stone cold, including the queso which was "refrigerator cold" and had large chunks of cold cheese in it, never melted; the salsa was enough for possibly 1-2 people, not 3. We got a tiny bag of chips for the 3 combo meals. We usually get this when we order 1-2 meals. The food was NOT flavorful, had to heat everything up. My husband called the manager, who after pressed about the cold queso, said he would bring us hot queso to our house, but asked us to give him back the cold queso they gave us with the order. Really?! By that time I had heated the queso with our dinners. He also told us the chips and small salsa is all they give for 3 meals, only enough for 1, barely 2. He said they had to cut back, and in reality, they did cut back, only after their prices were raised a LOT since covid. We had a great experience at La Nopalera. Out waitress Christina was great. She was very funny and personable. We each ordered a Margarita and offered for us to get a pitcher since it would be cheaper. We got regular Queso and queso with chorizo as an appetizer. The carnitas entire was HUGE. I don't understand the current overall 2-star rating. It's not the best Mexican food we've ever had, but certainly not the worst. It is more than ample. Considering we went on a busy Friday night...it was a good experience. I must say, I like to go places that get low ratings sometimes just to see it for myself and try it out. I am so glad I/we did. This is Tex-Mex! For Tex-Mex food it's pretty good. Just for sitting down you get chips & salsa. That is where our experience begins. If you have good salsa...then hey...you must be alright! My son asked for small plates and the server brought one full size plate while the rest of us had literal food droppings on the napkins in front of us. Our lunch order took 38 minutes to come out of the kitchen, with the server never returning to our table to refill our chip bowl or beverages, or removing are dirty napkin-plates. The ground beef on the nachos was of a homogenized, consistent consistency, comparable to the texture of the ground beef at Taco Bell, but more watery. The spice profile is very bland. I grew up in the Midwest, and it reminded me of Minnesotan Mexican, so the taste was nostalgic for me. However, now that I have eaten Mexican food from all over the world, I am not impressed. The chips of the Chilaquiles were soggy before they hit the table. All food arrived lukewarm. My chimichanga might have been OK if it was beef like I ordered instead of chicken. My son also ordered steak but received shrimp instead. The server was defensive offered no apologies, stating I did order chicken, and he did order steak, instead of offering to correct the mistake. I swear there is a La Nopalera on every street corner in Jacksonville now! We happened upon this location after coming home from games in the area. We were going to go to the one off San Jose, but this location was closer to where we were, so we decided to give it a shot. This used to be the old Mezcal Mexican Restaurant, so the decor is the same. We were quickly seated and handed menus before the chips and salsa came out. The menu is the same as the other locations, so everyone knew what they wanted to get already. They have the lunch specials on the weekends, so that made it more reasonable for this visit than other visits for dinner. Our food came out quickly, and it tasted great. As a former resident of Houston I've eaten some really scrumptious Tex-Mex and I can unequivocally state that La Nopalera would be run out of that city faster than you can say fajita. Speaking of fajitas, I ordered this on my first visit to this restaurant. As I was eating them I wanted to cry. Okay, so I didn't actually cry but there is just no other way to say this - it was not anything close to what I am accustomed to eating when I order fajitas. While I do consider myself a connoisseur of Tex-Mex, I don't feel like any type of expert at all on Mexican food. Maybe what La Nopalera serves is authentic Mexican, for all I know. I can tell you without hesitation that this is NOT Tex-Mex. If you've never eaten delicious Tex-Mex in Houston, go ahead and give it a try. You may like it, at least until you visit Texas.
