We stayed at the gran Melia in rio grande and opted for local (non resort) dining during our stay. The kiosks of Luquillo have amazing food and in particular la parilla definitely stood out. I had the churasco (beef flank steak) with rice and beans while my husband opted for the seafood stuffer lobster which he was able to hand pick from the aquarium. Heard so much about this place but found it disappointing. Ordered the ssampler appetizer. Nothing special and a bit greasy. Main course was pork medallion for my husband. It was a bit too sweet but not bad. I ordered yucca with steak in creole sauce. The dish was over salted and tasted like it had been prepared a few days before and reheated because the sauce was so thick and salt was intense. The mojito was the best I've ever had. Go there for drinks but pass on the food. It was a bit pricey for the food quality. We won't go back. read more

The lobster bisque was so amazingly good. Could have drank out of the bowl. Also loved the breaded grouper bites that came with a citrus cream dipping sauce. I had the shrimp mofongo. Gotta say I did NOT like the mofongo but it might just be me. The shrimp was huge. Husband got fried shrimp that came with salad, rice and beans. He said it was ok. La Parrilla in Luquillo offers some delicious meals but it is not 5 star worthy. Try the whole grilled snapper dish, whole fresh lobster, tuna with apricot glaze or the monfongo churrasco. With open air seating, prepare for mosquito bites after sunset. Located in a strip near the beach just off highway 3, use the frontage road to access and take the first parking space you see. You may feel unsafe outside around the strip mall, but once you are inside La Parrilla with the other tourists you'll feel better. read more

This place was extremely hyped up. We went here last night with the family since it was our last night in PR. We ordered drinks and appetizers which got there promptly. The margarita was one of the best I've had the whole trip, and so was the mojito. However we were there 2 hours and we still had not received our meals. We were a party of 8 so we expected a little bit of waiting but not 2 hours. If it wasn't for the drinks we might've left earlier. The waiter said our ticket was behind a party of 25 and stated our food was finished and they had to bring it to us. About 15 minutes later we still had no food and hadn't seen our waiter. We got up and walked downstairs to pay for apps and drinks. After explaining to them that our food never got there, workers said that it's almost done and to go back to our seats, I replied that we've been waiting more than 2 hours and we're done. The restaurant was nearly empty and the people who were getting their meals as we walked down were not there when we arrived, we also couldn't spot the party of "25" they said was in front of us. Extremely disappointed with the service and how they downplayed our outrageous wait time. It was our last night in PR, we always say goodbye with a nice evening at a restaurant with family. Stayed in Rio Grande at the Wyndham, and we drove down to the kiosks almost everyday. My wife and I ended up eating here twice in 5 days. As other reviewers noted their fried whole red snapper was excellent, and my wife really enjoyed the stuffed pineapple. But the whole reason we went back was the cuatro leches cake, it was absolutely awesome. I would absolutely recommend getting over the look of the kiosks and try La Parrilla. read more

I just ate here. The food is decent, however, the service was horrible. We are American tourists who speak a bit of Spanish, and the workers all seemed like they were bilingual. But somehow, we were just not getting served fast enough! Was I speaking Chinese when I asked twice for the check and a third time for la quenta and STILL wait while at least 6 guys stood around doing nothing? We went on a Thursday evening, and it wasn't packed. It's had a pretty view of the beach as we sat upstairs. We ordered alcapurrias of seafood and beef, the seafood was good but didn't have much stuffed inside. The beef was excellent. We also ordered a red snapper that was a great size. 1 and a half pound and it came with one side and a little salad. For $28 it was fair amount of food for one person, we shared the dish. The pina colada was too watery though, but the strawberry minuto was decent. Our family ordered a buttery fish that was good too. Clean bathrooms and the waiter was good. Only took away a star because they seem to give better service downstairs cause when my family asked for lobster they said no but the downstairs people had some. I never really do reviews on Yelp, but I HAD to do this one. We visited Puerto Rico last week on vacation and a guy at the Villas recommended La Parrilla. So glad he did! My group of 7 loved it! The guys picked their own lobster and they were HUGE! They grilled the 3.5 and 5.5 lb lobsters per request and we were not disappointed! The drinks were tasty and all of our food was super fresh! The lobster bisque was so good, we ordered another bowl! Absolutely going back on our next visit! read more

Management does a good job of keeping it authentic but not too authentic for gringos looking for a taste of PR. The scene at this ocean-front spot is nice enough with the caveat being if you're part of the Lilly, VV, Southern Tides, Johnny O set from Darien, CT or equivalent (no judgment but you know who you are), you may be kind of skeeved out. The service is going to be slow, on occasion painfully slow to the point of WTF. Don't bother to inquire about your order status, cuz you'll either get ignored or worse. This isn't the Wee Burn Club so the peeps working here don't have to grin and bear it. - 50/50 chance they are out of the signature lobster (MP = $40-$60) - Fried Snapper is delicious ($29) - Grouper in cilantro butter was good but the sauce wasn't cilantro or butter ($27) - Mahi was okay but sauce not as advertised either ($28) - Stuffed chicken was good ($24) - Skip the ribs and steak, you're here for the seafood. ($28-32) The meats are avg at best - PR rice, sweet plantains and fries are good Prices are on par with the most expensive resorts (Bahia Beach, Four Seasons, etc) so expect a hefty check. $24 for chicken breast?! This is one of the more popular restaurants in Luquillo and for very good reason: their food is very tasty, the staff is helpful and the place is professionally run. I've never seen them close early, so you know you can rely on them. I particularly recommend the pork medallions which come with beef inside and some bacon on the outside; or the chicken breast. Their only weakness is that if you order food to go, the amount of salad they give you for the "side salad" that comes with almost all the meals is tiny. In the restaurant, the amount is at least double. With their food, you can tell that the owner/chef has focused on improving nearly all the dishes over the course of time until almost all of them are in the good to great range. Almost nothing is average. For sides, the mofongo de yuca is amazing. It's very different than regular mofongo (made of plaintain) so even if you don't like regular mofongo, there's a good chance you'll like this. Three of us have tried it and all 3 raved about how tasty it was. One of the best side dishes I've ever had. read more

The best food I had in Puerto Rico! (I went to pretty much all the touristy places, drove out to Pork Highway, and hit up a few fancy places on Ashford Ave). Basically everything is good here, especially the mofongo. Yummy and not too dry like most places. Giant shrimps and fresh ingredients in everything. The pina coladas here are awesome too, probably the best I've had on the island. We only found our way here thanks to the recommendations of locals at our car rental place. You know it's legit when locals are regulars. The outside of the restaurant is very unassuming along a whole strip mall of small eateries. Remember go to #2 !! read more

This place was all hyped up. The food was over salty, as other yelpers stated, the food was okay only. We waited over an hour for one dish. I ordered a seafood mofongo and found chicken in it! And there was only one mussel in the seafood dish one! And maybe two pieces of Octopus and some mystery fish. The tostones were good but salty. The crab ones were good but the lobster ones were overcooked. They got our order wrong, when we ordered 2 items they only gave one. We even got orders from other tables..it feels like we were forgotten. Our water glasses were empty till the very end of our meal (that included the hour wait time for our food). It was overpriced (again like other yelpers stated) and I would not return to this place again. It is way too loud. I could not hear my friend even when he was right across the table from me. Overall, I would not return here nor would I recommend it. Oh and when we asked for the check, that alone took another half hour. Omg...our time was soo wastes. The place was not even that busy!!! DELICIOUS food. BEAUTIFUL views. WONDERFUL afternoon! Hubby and I decided to stop at La Parilla on a whim while on our way to the El Yunque rainforest. We were so, so, SO happy we did. We were seated with a beautiful view of the ocean - extremely serene, peaceful, and without a trace of tons of tourists on the water. After perusing the menu for quite a while, Hubby and I finally decided on an order: The whole fried red snapper with ripe mofungo for him, and the seafood mofungo for me. While we waited, we ordered a margarita/sangria mixed drink. It was very delicious - we both got brain freeze from drinking it so quickly! Our food arrived after a bit of a wait, though we weren't in a hurry and are genuinely pleased when our food is cooked well, and it was! The red snapper was absolutely delicious - crispy outside, and flaky inside. Coupled with the table hot sauce, I was in Hubby's dish for a few minutes. My mofungo was also tasty - it had seafood including shrimp, scallops, conch, and calamari and was topped with a creole sauce. I have to take a star away because it wasn't "true" creole sauce, but it was still good! We definitely ate our weight in lunch at La Parilla and then tried to hike it off at El Yunque. Located in the Luquillo Kiosk area, this restaurant didn't look very appealing at first glance. However, it was recommended by friends, so we gave it a try. The seafood mofongo was the best we've had this trip. The plantains were sweet, flavourful, and moist. The shrimp on top were substantial and then the whole thing is covered with a rich cream sauce. It was heavy, but so good! My husband had the stuffed red snapper that was also very good. It was more of a rice and seafood carribean dish, lighter but a massive portion. The restaurant sits just across from the beach, so the view was nice. Portions are substantial, so sharing an app or two and perhaps on entree would be sufficient for most. We had chicken mofongo, pineapple rice w/shrimp, pork medallion stuffed w/ground beef wrapped in bacon with a red wine mango reduction sauce. Everything was great but the empanadas where delicious. This is my fav restaurant in PR and I visit every year and try all kinds of places. The food is phenomenal. I love that it's right on the beach and pretty much all outdoors. The service is great. Sangria is delicious. The arroz con habicheulas MELT IN YOUR MOUTH. Only place you can get them better is homemade. I don't eat seafood but they have a huge selection and it's very fresh. I love the Mofongo Relleno de Steak with mushroom sauce. Also the pastelitos are AMAZINGLY delicioso. It's SO worth the drive of 3 East to visit the beautiful Luquillo Beach and have a bite here. LOVED this place, especially their seafood mofongo!!!! La Parilla is a laid back place right on the beach along the Luquillo Kiosks (towards the end of the strip). We had an appetizer sampler of arepas ad empanadas (fish, chicken, beef). Arepas were good, but we really enjoyed the fish empanads. Although we didn't order any lobster, they had just gotten a bunch of fresh and enormous lobsters and were putting them in the tank as we arrived. We went to La Parrilla on a local recommendation. Definitely the best meal we had in Puerto Rico! I can understand what the other posters have said about being pricey, but my husband and i had a fabulous dinner for $25, so it doesn't have to be. I had the plantain and chicken soup to start--really good. My husband even liked it and he doesn't like plantains. I had fried yuca and the beef pastillo for my meal (2apps) and my husband had the fried pork with French fries. We finished with the coconut flan, which wasn't too sweet. All very good and plenty of food! The service was attentive also. As other posters have mentioned, though, the plaza is pretty sketchy. read more
