Avoid this place. The lady is rude and she miscounts your change in purpose to short change you. During COVID, you weren't able to select your bread hence they had it behind the counter l. You would order what you wanted and she would hand you old, and stale bread pieces. She would then not allow you to get a refund or exchange the bread for a fresh one which is what you originally went in for . Sucks this place has gone down in quality and customer service. STUFFED BOLIOS all i have to say is WOW. you must try them! Bolio is a traditional Latin style bread roll. They're typically oval shaped, and when fresh, are incredibly soft. The flavor is similar to a french roll, its just much softer. We had the: Chorizo & Potato stuffed bolio- The potato was cooked perfectly and the chorizo had a little bit of a kick to it. That little bit of spice mixed with a little chew from the potato & chorizo mix all rolled up into that bread was delish. And at a $2 price point, it is worth a drive. Greatest stuffed bolios I've come across. I'm from Orange County and I drive all the way to Wilmington for these and it's worth it.

I hate to do this because I've been coming here since I was a kid and my abuelita was an avid customer since she came too Wilmington. My family comes basically every Sunday to grab our pan dulce for our cafesito. I sent a message through IG asking if they can do a last minute mini heart-shaped conchita order for the following day. I was inquiring because I knew it was very last minute. Messages were going back and forth with pauses in between as the person asked the baker if it was possible. I was told they could only make big heart-shaped conchas, being that these were for 5 year olds I didn't want them big so I asked if they could do mini unicorn conchitas. Person replies they already started making the heart-shaped conchas. I never once placed an order and was still asking questions. I made it clear to them I hadn't ordered and would like the unicorn conchitas. I even sent them a pic that they had posted on their IG. I wanted the same exact thing but 3 dozen. I placed the order and went to pick-up them up the next day. It appeared to be the younger daughter at the register. Off the bat she tells me she's giving me a $4 discount. Never in my 37 years coming here have I been given a discount, so I automatically thought something was up. I start to open up the white box with my order and sure enough they're the wrong color. Being that this was just for my child's class , the color difference wasn't a big deal to me. She then starts trying to explain to me they mixed-up the colors because it was SO last minute. Mind you she only told me this AFTER I started to look at them. My biggest problem was the actual concha. These were the flattest most over baked/burnt conchas I had ever seen at La Perla. They looked like burnt cookies with concha sugar on top, not even exaggerating. SO extremely disappointed. She then looks at me and with an attitude says "So do you want them or not?! That's all they could do since it was so last minute." I asked her if she was the one I spoke to on IG and she looked at me annoyed and said she had no idea because there are 3 people who manage it. Really?!! I told her "they" could have just told me they couldn't do it and I wouldn't have ordered. She had already charged me so I asked for my money back. I was and still am disappointed. The bad customer service was the worst part. Bad attitude won't get you customers. If you don't want to be there then get someone who has pride in their business and the history it holds. I've had great customer service from the other younger ladies, including little Perla herself. I've placed orders over IG before and haven had a problem. This one will def deter me from going. read more

Usually stop by this place for cafe de olla, which is amazing. Today I bought a bolillo with chorizo and papa. Two bites into my bolillo, something felt weird. Pulled this piece of string out of my mouth, which was in the bread. I don't know what the backroom looks like where they get everything ready, but if this is in my bread, I don't think I even want the coffee anymore. I really hate to do this. Love supporting small businesses BUT I feel it's necessary to share my bad experience so that others don't go thru the same. I placed a special order for Saturday Sept.1 for my nieces Unicorn Party. I placed the order at least a month in advance & left 1/2 of it paid for. I asked for a pick up time of 11am. I showed up to the Bakery at 11:45 and my order was no where near done.. to be honest by the look on the guys face in the back, looked to me like they either forgot my order completely or accidentally put it out to sell (there were 3 unicorn conchas in the display case). Anyway, I was a little upset, the lady tried to give me some BS excuse about the bread not rising, not right outside temp,they put them out expecting certain temp, I dunno I don't speak baker. Would've been nice for someone to call me!! So she tells me, it's going to be another 2 hours and she'll call me as soon as they're done... 2:30 comes around, no phone call yet, so I called them. They lady told me she hadn't called cuz they were just boxing up my order and it should be ready by the time I got there... I showed up an hour later... half of my order still needed to be boxed up and counted.. God forbid they accidentally give me an extra concha for my inconvenience! So I finally got to pick up my order 4 hours later and I still had to pay my remaining balance. It wasn't much, $12 but that's not my point, the right thing to do would've been for the lady not to charge the balance seeing as my order was late and I had to make an extra trip. I barely got an apology from the lady at the very end. I guess she could tell I was upset. I tried not to be rude about it, I respect mom and pop shops BUT that was a little ridiculous. Highly recommend this place I live in Compton and I come all the way to the South Bay just to get some bomb bread really fresh and soft conchas and the café de olla is so good. I went today to get a Roscas Reyes bread and everyone love it. So soft and warms and filled with guava with cream cheese of extra cost but so worth it. I don't care about the drive. Better get there early Fri-Sun or they just might sell out of everything you're craving! No but seriously, the best! The fact that they sell out often says it all. There is usually no shortage of pan and several kinds to choose from. The shortbread style cookies are my favorite. Just ask for a tray and load it up with whatever your craving and they will box it up for you. The coffee is flavorful and fresh as well as inexpensive and is a perfect compliment to any of their tasty treats. Best Mexican Bread, Always Fresh and love the bollio when its coming out of the oven so soft. They also have oatmeal in a cup to go the best when your driving to work. My grandparents first moved to Wilmington in the late 1920's. My grandmother bought her house on Denni St. in 1948. I don't know how long La Perla Bakery has been around, but I remember walking over and buying fresh Mexican bread in the 1960's. My grandmother's old house is still owned by our family and I was in town early one Saturday to clean the property. I haven't been in this neighborhood in 20 years. The first thing I smelled as I got out of my car was the scent of freshly baked bread coming from La Perla. I was wonderfully surprised that this small local bakery was still in business. My sister walked over and brought back two pastries and hot coffee. She mentioned seeing a sign for tortas. I went back several hours later to check them out (by then we had worked hard cleaning the house and were pretty hungry.) I ordered two $5 tortas. Move over Subway...these tortas were loaded with ham, lettuce, tomato, and avocado all on a freshly made bolillo. La Perla has quite a selection of Mexican bread to choose from. It also sells a few items one might find at a 7-11. Personally I thought the shop may do well as a local cafe, a place where locals can order a quick torta and drink and catch up with neighbors. But then again, this may encourage loiters and the neighborhood has had a problem with loitering in the past.
