This is our favorite restaurant in Santa Fe! So of course when my brother and sister in-law came to town from Ohio we wanted them to experience excellent food in Santa Fe. I have to say this review is only for the hostess desk and manager. Both of whom are completely unaware of the act of customer service. We arrived at the front desk without any greeting, hello, can I help you, Nothing! I asked Kayla if we could get a table and she said "there is an hour wait", so I asked her to put our name down and she refused once again saying "it's going to be a really long time". Guess what Kayla we were will to wait!! So I asked Kayla "are you telling me to go elsewhere because you would not take our name". She said "no, but was not going to take our name". After that I chased down the manager (I think), and told him about Kayla. He said "oh really, I will talk to her". Then he walked into the lounge area and began talking with 6 people at a table very loudly!and ignoring me! We come to La Fonda often since we live in Albuquerque, and we stay at the hotel too. I think other hotels and restaurants would like to have our business in the future!!! I am sooo disappointed and frankly it hurt my feelings! read more

This hotel restaurant is close to the plaza and has a wonderful ambiance. We arrived prior to our reservation and had a drink at the bar next door. I had a tamarindo margarita and it was one of the tastiest and unique tasting margs I've ever had. Bright with that tamarind flavor and smoky salt on the rim. It reminded me of tanjin and li hing...super yummy. The bar can port your drinks over to your restaurant tab, but I closed out before we went over to the restaurant. At the restaurant, I ordered chicken enchiladas with Christmas sauce and black beans and it came with a posole. Not a soup, but what seemed like stewed pork and hominy. It was delicious and honestly I could've had that as a meal by itself. The chicken enchiladas were delicious. The tortillas were thicker than a tiny Baja taco tortilla and held up against the sauce really well. Margie was our server and was super sweet. read more

It was our first night in town, we were a bit done in from a long day of travelling and decided to "settle" for the hotel restaurant. Because let's face it, many (most?) hotel restaurants know they have you held hostage to a point, so they are basically good at best. Not so with the Plazuela. Wonderful meal at La Fonda. The restaurant is beautiful; the service excellent; the prices reasonable. The tableside Guacamole was fantastic, perfectly prepared, and generous in portion. The Fajitas for two were an inexpensive choice at $40.00, perfectly prepared, huge in portion, including shrimp, chicken, and steak. The vegetables were nicely seasoned and not overcooked. We left with enough food in a doggie bag to serve another ample meal for two. Generally, portions this large are not this good, but the food was top notch and we would have been happy even if we'd paid much more for less quantity. We were surprised by a delicious complimentary dessert of a sweet bread that we dipped in honey. A perfect ending. Absolutely a meal to remember. Very highly recommended! read more

This is a very cute restaurant. Our server was so nice! The margaritas were great. If you want to start with an app, get the blue corn muffins, they were so good! We got the poblano and corn soup. It was way too thick, I would not classify it was a soup, but a thick corn chowder. The tortilla soup was good, but needed some salt. We both got salads. The wedge salad was very good! The red chili ranch dressing and bacon on it were great. The Caesar was good overall, but could use something else. I loved the Caesar dressing however! We tried the table side guacamole and were not disappointed. I also had excellent chilies rellenos. The charming dining room is in the atrium of the La Fonda Hotel. We ate a little too early and only caught a glimpse of the young Flamenco dancers who gave a show at the bar. It would be worth returning and allowing time to see the dancers. read more

I have a confession. I ate here twice during my brief visit and I don't regret it! I'm a sucker for ambiance and this place has it. Not to mention, it's a perfect restaurant if you're dining alone! First of all, how can you miss a visit to La Fonda when it's apparently the oldest hotel in America? Secondly, how can you not eat at a restaurant situated in an enclosed courtyard with a huge skylight and lit up with trees with twinkle lights? For me, I just couldn't resist. I like this restaurant because it's pretty reasonably priced, the service is quick, the food is very flavorful and the staff is incredibly friendly. I had the same waitress twice, Nancy S, and not only was she friendly and helpful but she remembered me on my second visit. There's nothing like feeling like a regular somewhere when you're traveling! I ate here for lunch and then breakfast the next day. While I didn't get to enjoy a lot of the food, the food I had was filled with flavor. I think that's the word of the trip: flavor. Everything about Santa Fe has flavor, whether it be the food, buildings, history or culture. For lunch, I ordered the tortilla soup which was hearty and incredibly filling. It had avocado, cheese, chicken and tomatoes. I slurped up every spoonful. The next morning for breakfast, I was boring and just had eggs and an English muffins but they were both tasty for what they were! The menu is plentiful and has the southwest flavor with plenty of Mexican food options. I also saw many tables order the made-to-order guacamole and my mouth started to water. Yes, this hotel (so therefore this restaurant) can be a bit of a tourist trap but guess what? I'm a tourist and it I'm happy they trapped me! read more

I really wanted to like this place. I'd never been to the La Fonda hotel, and I thought it would be a good opportunity to check it out when we had out of town guests visiting. Unfortunately the service was slow, which made the experience disappointing. We waited around 40 minutes after we finished our appetizers and cocktails without seeing our server. We even asked for her a few times, with no luck. We just wanted to order another round of cocktails since it was taking a comically long time for our entrees to come out, but it seemed like our server was just avoiding us completely. When our server finally came by, we asked why our entrees were taking so much longer than the tables around us, and she explained that it's because we ordered appetizers. We shook our heads at her poor excuse since the tables around us were sat after we were seated, and all of them had ordered appetizers too. I can understand an off night... a few mistakes here and there are completely forgivable. But the worst part of the night that ticked me off the most was the fact that the manager of the restaurant came by and asked how our night went. We said to him "not very well", and he just gave us a wry smile, said not one word, and just walked away. I mean C'MON MAN! That's no way to treat your customers. He could have easily alleviated the situation with an apology, but his actions left us even more disgruntled. I wouldn't have written a bad review about them on Yelp if it wasn't for that last straw. Needless to say my out of town guests were NOT impressed by La Plazuela's staff, and I definitely DO NOT recommend this restaurant. read more

Really amazing guacamole. They make it tableside with many choices of ingredients and they take as much care in the preparation as someone making steak tartare at Les Halles. My heirloom tomato soup was overseasoned. For real, if you have heirloom tomatoes you don't have to drown them in a spice mix. Our main courses were middle of the road American-Mex and it wasn't that tasty. My fish tacos had globs of melted cheese on the bottom... ew. The tamale dish my huz had was inhaled at the speed of light because he was really hungry. I wasn't really feeling the tamales though, the meat inside was dry. read more

I was very excited to be in Santa Fe. And even more excited about having some great Mexican food. I came to the right place. I really loved the huge expansive dining room. Service from Rachel was great, she was very friendly and attentive. I opted for "Filet y Enchiladas" which was a char-grilled petite filet mignon and two yellow corn cheese enchiladas. It was also served with black beans, pork posole, guacamole, sour cream, lettuce, tomatoes and sopaipillas. Also, I got a side of the papaya salsa, it was definately worth the extra money. I can't say enough good things about the posole!! I had never had it before and it was amazingly good. And the sopaipillas were SO good. Excellent meal. read more

After all the great reviews, my friends and I were really looking forward to reading here, but unfortunately service, food and management were very disappointing. After receiving drinks, it took about twenty minutes for the waitress to come back and ask us for our order and from there thirty minutes to receive our meals. Not only did we wait long, but the prime ribs were not cooked correctly and then over cooked after being sent back. Lastly, the manager was unapologetic to our concerns and told us that their customers expect dinner to last two to three ours. Absolutely unheard of and will definitely not be back. Hope this helps. I was very disappointed in my experience here. I had come with a large group of friends and recommended the dining venue as a great choice given the great yelp reviews. The experience was nothing short of crap. Since our reservation was late in the evening 9pm, we chose to order drinks (beer & wine) and straight to main course. Our drinks alone took about 20 minutes before they came to our table. Since we hadn't ordered any mixed cocktails, I was curious to know why we waited so long - even a simple apology from our waitress would have sufficed. We ordered our meals and a few of us ordered the special, NY Prime Steak. I asked for my steak to be cooked medium well and what looked like came out was close to medium rare. Before sending it back, I did want to cut in to the steak to be certain and of course there was a lot of red and pink. It looked like it was cooked unevenly as well. I asked the waitress to send it back and have it cooked to my temp like I requested. While everyone at the table continued to eat - I waited another 20 minutes before my steak came back out. This time it was over cooked - if there is a temp over well done, this is what it was. I was starving at this point and decided to eat it anyways. The steak was so chewy I had about 4 bites before I just couldn't take it. I was left eating the veggies on the side and whatever bread was at the table. The waitress took my plate and didn't bother asking how it was, considering most of the steak was still on my plate. Annoyed - I requested to speak to her manager. The gentleman came out and seemed rather defensive. Stating I should have sent my plate back for the second time. Not to mention calling him there at the time of the problem. I went on to elaborate that the service was slow. He responded with saying I should allocate about 3 hours for the dining experience here. If I'm ordering 1 course - it should take no more than 1.5 hrs. Long story short, the manager comped my meal thinking I was looking for a free meal as opposed to just an apology for the lack of service and poor cooking of my food. I was very disappointed with every bit of my experience that I certainly wouldn't come back - even if the food was amazing. Service is what makes or breaks a business. The food was amazing. I had the red bird chicken and it was seasoned and prepared to perfection. I had the "la organica" to drink and it was a little too sweet for me but overall yummy. We also ordered a bread plate and I can honestly say one of the stars of the night was the mini cornbread muffin! First impression, the dining space is a beautiful sunroom with a fountain in the middle. We were lucky enough to be seated right next to the fountain. It was lunch time. Great natural lighting with gentle soothing sound from the fountain. Second impression, taking a look around, the average age of the patron is probably about 40s. We felt a little too young (30 and 35). Maybe that's just a fluke. Food? Amazing. Mango Gazpacho is a must. You have to try this. It is so amazing. Refreshing not just to the palate, but also to the soul. I wanted to lick the plate but decided that wouldn't look good. Chile Relleno is another must. A previous review mentioned this. We checked into hotel and due to heavy rainfall, decided to eat in rather than walk around the plaza for other non hotel restaurant food. The service was great. The food was ok - not disappointing but not overwhelming either. We ordered fajitas (mixed steak and chicken) and rating flavor a 3 for being filling. We also had chicken tortilla soup and Caesar salad; soup was favorable but more of a siping/drinking soup without too much to chew or bite on - tasty, but I wanted more chicken. I took a client here for lunch--mostly because it is a pretty place and the food is consistently good. The reason I am giving it four stars instead of five is because our lunch was $50 for the two of us which is a lot for lunch. I had the carne adovado (basically, spiced, pulled pork) tacos which were $20. Good but pricey. My client had a green chili cheeseburger. They charged $1.50 for a watered down coke and then another $1.50 to refill my glass. If you go there for dinner the very best item on the menu is the little pancakes with pulled pork. I love Mexican food, so hear me when I say this place is excellent. My parents have been coming here for the past 4 years, and I can now see why. Wonderful decor inside, with open skylights, plants, lit windows, making you feel you're outside. The hours are a little odd, closing lunch at 2PM, and opening for dinner at 5PM, but I understand why. The salsa was pretty hot, but tasty. I ordered a vanilla margarita, not a usual thing, but it sounded different. Not too strong in the vanilla, but definitely strong in the alcohol area. The chile rellenos were excellent and huge. Smoothered in a very tasty and not too spicy green chile, these beer battered beauties were perfect. On top of my sampler platter, I also got a pork tamale and cheese enchilada. Needless to say, at the end of my meal, I was stuffed. Add the included beans and hominy side, also including very large sopapillas, and I was done. You could have rolled me out of the place. Four of us celebrated a special birthday last night at La Plazuela. The setting was old, historic and beautiful. Our waiter was the best. He allowed us to slow down and savor the evening. The chicken Fajitas were delicious and plentiful. We had an app of guacamole which was prepared at the table...perfect. Our only negative was the quantity of the quail tacos. I was really excited as they do make it table side and all the ingredients looked fresh. It tasted "off" and have had much better here in Northern VA. Looked like they used jared chopped garlic instead of fresh. Can't remember what everyone had, but I had the Chili Rellanos. Again, mediocre. Oh, my beloved red/green chile...how I'd missed you. Since we'd just arrived and it was kind of late and we didn't want to drive cause it was dark, and mostly because of Jose's recommendation (shout out to Inn on the Alameda!), we went to La Plazuela for dinner. It was late. It was Sunday. It was green chile nirvana. That said, I must tell you that the menu was more elegant than what I was craving, but I got the relleno combo platter, christmas, thank you, and I frankly don't remember what The Giant ordered. He thought it was kind of B+, but I loved the green chile that covered my rellenos. I just wish I'd been given more of it. But that's cause I was craving it so. A note about the decor: gorgeous! The restaurant used to be an open courtyard, and the walls are embedded with hand painted glass panels, and each is different and unique. There's a central fountain and an open floor plan. Just gorgeous! As for the "cotton tops" comment, there were a lot of seasoned travelers in Santa Fe, but there are a lot of everyone in Santa Fe as well! Lovely; can't wait to go back. We have been dining at La Plazuela for at least the past 30 years. It is by far our favorite breakfast place in Santa Fe. Their breakfast trout or their huevos rancheros are simply fabulous. Don't forget to ask for extra posole, you won't regret it. Each time we've dined there in the evening, it's been as fine as any restaurant in town with a fabulously rounded menu. Lunch time is a great place to come by for a bite. Their plates are filling and the atmosphere is enchanting. The staff is always out to please their guests. read more

This restaurant is beautiful! I came here for lunch when visiting my boyfriend's family. It is located in the cute Santa Fe plaza, in the hotel. I loved the color & ambiance of the dining atrium! Unfortunately, there was quite a bit of confusion with the host desk when we arrived. It was crowded, & there was a wait, and they do close for a break between lunch & dinner. We were told to wait, and the host told us conflicting messages. First we were told we were on a wait list of several people and that we may or may not be seated before lunch ended. However, he could not estimate the wait time. We were told to just go to the lobby bar for drinks, but as we were visiting guests having a special lunch, we wanted to eat in the actual atrium. Then we were told we would not make the cut. While we were sitting around trying to decide what to do next... all of a sudden we were called & seated. What? I was glad we were, but man, get it together! I was expecting to be blown away by the food, even though I hate Mexican food, because it's New Mexico & shouldn't it be amazing? The food was just okay. I got a special vegetarian plate. While I appreciated they catered to vegetarians, it was not that tasty. My boyfriend enjoyed his enchiladas and the red chile. Margaritas were good, & the service was attentive. Overall, despite the initial stress of the fiasco, it ended up being a pleasant lunch in a lovely location. read more

The food, oh my . . . . New Mexican food couldn't get any better than this. Breakfast, lunch or dinner. They even make the guacamole fresh at your table. When they say 'fresh' they mean it. This dining room is literally right in the middle of the hotel - in a big plaza like area. Hence the name. It's a 2 stories high ceiling, glass covered so it is always sunny & inviting inside. The decorations are typical Santa Fe - lots of hand carved wood and bright colored painted floral designs. Although reservations are recommended, it is almost always possible to get a seat with a little wait. Except maybe during Fiestas or other local events. The food is sub-par but this is the best service we had in Santa Fe. The chips were too thick and tasted stale the salsa might as well have been some tomato chunks and water, the tortilla soup needed lots of salt and all around the food just wasn't very good or bad, but the service was fantastic and the whole restaurant was beautiful. At most restaurants I drink so much water that I'm used to having an empty glass almost the whole time but here it was much different we were immediately greeted and everything moved along very quickly, and I would go again. read more

One of the very best meals we've had in Santa Fe over the last 20+ years! And we had been thinking of La Plazuela as a place just for tourists too lazy to leave the hotel. Wrong! We split an unusual salad of goji berries, chick peas, toasted almonds and avocado on a bed of Boston bibb lettuce with a creamy apple cider dressing -- not only exotic but delicious and even good for you. I had the local lamb chops in a port-fig sauce with a drizzle of arugula pesto -- done perfectly to my order, and absolutely delicious. Also enough that we could have shared it -- but I didn't. My wife chose chicken enchiladas, thinking that was a "safe" choice -- but in fact they were the best enchiladas either of us has ever had. Not sure what made them so -- but it was true. We had mentioned to our excellent waitress that it was our anniversary, and she surprised and delighted us by bringing a molten chocolate cake as a gift. Also delicious. The ambiance with the painted glass pane walls, the high ceiling and giant ficus trees and fountain was suitably romantic and intriguing (every pane painted in a different pattern), We could hear other guests, but the noise level was muted enough for easy conversation. read more

In general I try to avoid Hotel Restaurants as they consistently disappoint. However, this is a notable exception. First, the beauty of this restaurant, set in the heart of the atrium of a historic restaurant, with the trees, the water fixture, the lighting and the painted glass windows...really remarkable setting and so relaxing. Second, the service in this restaurant was very nice. A good balance of attentiveness with no sense of being rushed. It certainly made the meal relaxed. Finally, the food. Our meals were delicious, and while more expensive that comparable meals we had had, see my first and second points. The food did not disappoint and stood on its own for its quality, presentation and taste. the La Plazuela is a memorable dining experience and really, not to be missed. read more

Not great, but not terrible. The wait for or table was supposed to be 15 minutes, but that turned into 30-40 without any heads-up from the hostess. No biggie, we were seated at an oversized table that accommodated us nicely. Our server was pleasant and attentive. We ordered our breakfasts and waited a short while for the food to be brought out. I was surprised at how cold my biscuits and gravy were for such a quick turnaround. The flavor and quality of ingredients were present, just not any heat to indicate it was a fresh plate. My company were happy with their meals (a huevos rancheros and french toast). The coffee was good, but not great. The bill was pricey for three having a reasonably sized breakfast. I would give this place another go when visiting Santa Fe, but not next trip. I need to venture out and experience more food choices. If you want really pricey food, with good service, and a hit or miss on the freshness of the food (cold or hot) then you must visit La Plazuela. If you don't care for a crap shoot when you dine, then try another one of the many tasty offerings that the Santa Fe Plaza offers. read more

La Plazuela is a tourist trap - it feels like it should be a restaurant in Disneyland's Southwesternland. I ate there with my husband and a friend during a visit to Santa Fe and we were totally underwhelmed in every way. The dining room itself was fine, if a little overdone (it felt like it was designed to impress tourists). But the food & drinks were totally overpriced for the mediocre quality. My fish was rubbery and overcooked, yet somehow room temperature. The guacamole was bland and the chips were greasy. Only the margaritas were good, but we paid for it in the price. All of us had indigestion after the meal (which is rare for my husband and I). If you're in Santa Fe, go and track down some authentic Southwestern food outside the touristy center of town. It will cost 1/4 of the price and you won't have to run to the store for an antacid. read more
