Stopped by El Coyote on a Sunday after church for my first visit and had a great experience. The atmosphere was much more festive and lively than I expected, which made it a fun place to spend the afternoon. Service was excellent, and our server's friendly, funny personality made the meal even more enjoyable. Before our food arrived, we were served chips with three different sauces. One was mild, one spicy, and one warm. All were delicious and a great way to start the meal. I ordered the beef flautas and really enjoyed them. The guacamole was made with real avocados, which I always appreciate. My son had the fish taco, which looked fresh and tasty. Parking is available in the back, and valet is offered after 4 p.m. for $10. Overall, a very enjoyable first visit. I'd happily come back. read more

Stringy, plastic cheese nachos. The incredible aroma of grilled chicken, picante guacamole zest, and spicy rice masked by that horrible plastic cheese. And then came the server's arm across my plate. Violation code: Specific Health Code Violations Tied to Reaching Over Plates Food Protection Laws: Cal Code Section 113980 mandates that food must be protected from contamination at all times. Reaching directly over an open plate introduces risks from clothing contact, falling hair, or skin dander.Employee Cleanliness: Cal Code Section 113971 requires employees to prevent contamination of food and food-contact surfaces. Reaching over a plate places the server's unwashed forearms or sleeves directly above food ready for consumption.Utensil and Plate Handling: Cal Code Section 114079 explicitly states that servers must handle soiled or clean tableware without touching the food-contact surfaces. Reaching across a plate increases the risk of accidental finger placement on the eating surface or rim. This encounter happened last night and on my most recent visit. My friends and I came here for dinner and let me share why this review is 3 stars... First, I got charged $28 for a tip I never consented to. We had already paid with cash tip. I was able to get refunded for this charge . My friend and I ordered a "blended fruit margarita" to which we received chunky watered down tequila with no distinct flavor. I ordered the Peach and my friend ordered the Mango which looked like Pineapple... We started off with appetizers that shouldn't be hard to mess up... I got the beef flautas with the flour tortilla. It looked like mini egg rolls with the toppings in the middle and the flautas tasted undercooked. The chips, salsa, and guac were the only thing I found decent from the meal. They could improve by cooking the flautas in corn tortillas or frying the flour tortilla longer. read more

The food was some of the best Mexican cuisine l had in a long time. I ordered 2 plate combo with beans & rice shredded beef taco chicken enchilada. The chips and salsa was so yummy l could only eat my taco brought the rest of my meal home. The decor is cute it's giving cool vibes. We arrived at about 11:30am and sat on benches located outside. Two other parties arrived about 15Doors opened promptly at 12:00pm and we were the first ones seated and before we knew it, the seats were filling up and there was a wait. This place gets packed QUICK! The interior was dark and well decorated with fun things. My husband said that's what his mom's house used to look like lol He already knew what he wanted as he was the one who picked here for lunch. I looked over the menu and just had to try the flautas. I went with the shredded beef as that's my favorite from my usual place. They were very good and very full! We also had chips and salsa, salsa had a nice soft kick to it and the chips were crispy. For my entree, I ordered the ground beef enchilada and taco plate. I already knew it was too much food, but I still continued. Everything was delicious. The rice and the beans were good and the taco was crunchy. Overall everything was good. We did notice that as the place filled up, it was harder to get service. I will keep that in mind for next time, to just ask for the check when we know we are finished ordering. read more

I cannot think of a single thing to change that would improve El Coyote and perhaps that is why it has been here for nearly 100 years! And, it is great for vegetarians, if you pay attention to the menu items carefully. What is not to love? Extensive menu, special requests honored, free parking in their own lot before 4 pm, in a very popular part of West Hollywood, vibrant upbeat festive atmosphere, attentive service, delicious food, super generous portions, and very reasonable prices. Clean too. What a fun place. We loved it. Having eaten hundreds of Mexican meals in multiple cities over the decades, including in Mexico, this is in my top 10. A little gem in LA. I came here after a hike, it was early afternoon before the dinner rush. The parking is valet only but there are neighborhoods around to park in. We were greeted right away and sat right away, no wait at the time we went. The service was fast and friendly and attentive. I really liked the interior decor it's so cute reminded me of a vacation with the cute lights. I ordered the Chile relleno with only beans and my friend ordered the grilled fish tacos with a side of rice and beans. We also got the guac and chips, surprisingly it was such a little amount for the price. The entrees had good flavor and were homestyle. El Coyote is an institution and has been around for almost 100 years. The ambiance is dark, there are red leather booths, big portions, and huge friendly personalities from the servers who have been there for a long time. My husband ordered the smothered burrito in red sauce and did it La Cocina style which added sour cream, guac, and pico on top to make it extra sloppy. He licked the plate clean. I ordered the combination plate with a crispy shredded beef taco and a green corn tamale. The refried beans were super smooth, rice was yummy, the beef taco was crispy and just the right amount of greasy with crisp lettuce and fresh tomatoes on top. The green tamale had a green chile inside with a sweet masa. The sweetness threw me off a bit but it was good, just different than what I'm used to. The table salsa has a slight kick paired with the warm salty tortilla chips and the service was superb and speedy. So, I've been here maybe 5 more times since my last review. I still get the steak burrito, and always super great (although a couple times it was SUPER salty.) The service since my last review hasn't been the best. We'd wait a long while before we get help. But our last one, the lady was FREAKING AMAZING. I wish I got her name. El Coyote is such a LA classic and now I live so close, I get to go all the time! I wasn't sure what to expect from a celebrity hot spot where a very messy Girls Night happened on the last season of The Valley. I was honestly surprised to see it's such a chill but home-like-feeling restaurant with friend groups, families, couples - it just seemed right for every occasion. Valet parking is the only option and $10 so prepare some cash moneys if driving. I like valet, takes the worry out of parking in wild LA situations. My friend and I come earlier in the evening as the pseudo-seniors we are, so usually can just walk right in and grab a table. The staff is always so welcoming and some of the servers treat you like you're a part of their family instantly. Our server ended the night by saying, See you Manana! jajaja I was also surprised with how good everything we have had has been. From the Flautas appetizer of thick meaty rolls served with guacamole to their street tacos on corn tortillas, shockingly good! Get the steak in your fajitas or tacos - the seasoning and plumpness of it can't be beat. Free chips and salsa with every order. I get the hype now. I love El Coyote~! read more

Margaritas suck, they just bring him and ordinary glasses which shows you how much they care, feels like being a Denny's but with cool history. I think the last time I was here was in the early 90s. We really didn't plan on coming, but passed by and decided to stop. The line looked long, but we really didn't wait more than 10 or 15 minutes and we were seated. The staff was very friendly and the servers were all dressed in really nice long dresses and looked great. My absolutely stunning date and I both had fajitas. She had shrimp and I had steak and they were both excellent. They came out nice and hot and had lots of fresh grilled vegetables and were very large portions. And, unlike most places that serve fajitas, they gave us like seven or eight tortillas each so we never ran out. Chips and salsa were plentiful and fresh and tasty. Parking is definitely a challenge if you don't want to valet. read more

They were running like a well oiled machine sitting people so quickly. Sizzling fajitas arrived with no sizzle at all. At nearly $30, I expected some presentation, I 100% was expecting them to arrive with a bunch of crackling and steam that most places do by simply throwing down some water on a hot stone. Someone else ordered the cheese enchilada plate and mentioned how little cheese was inside. It was mostly tortilla with barely any filling. I went with the specialty asada plate and nothing about it stood out as special. I also ordered the top shelf margarita. They did not hold back on the alcohol, but it did not taste like Don Julio. It came across more like Jose Cuervo. I would have preferred a larger glass and a better salted rim. Parking is ten dollars, which caught us off guard. If I had known that, we probably would have gone to El Cholo instead, which we skipped because of their nine dollar parking. El Coyote is not terrible, but it misses in too many areas including food quality, pricing, and presentation. The highlight was the chips and salsa. The portion is not huge, but if you get a warm basket they are actually very good. Both salsas stand out. One is thinner with more heat, the other is chunkier. Some places serve salsa that tastes like ketchup, but this is not one of them. Next time we will head closer to the coast and go somewhere like Pancho's where the overall experience tends to be better. read more

Was in the mood for a sit down Mexican meal while in Los Angeles, so I sat there and did some research. Stumbled upon El Coyote. First, it was Established in 1931, eateries that have depth and history stand out to me, they are still around for a reason. The heated rivalry of who's Cheese Enchiladas stands supreme in L.A... The mystique of El Coyote being the setting of where Sharon Tate shared her last meal amongst friends beford the Manson Family met with her that night. El Coyote was also featured in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood... showing Sharon at her favorite table in the restaurant. Anyways that's the back story of how we got here. I noticed the restaurant opened at 12... this was my meal before heading back home up north, so I showed up about 11:30... they had 3 big wood benches that seat about 4 people each outside, so my wife and I just waited since it was a nice day out. Promptly at noon, the doors opened, and us, along with 2 other parties waiting were sat. quickly we notice just how popular the restaurant is, because before yo knew it. Maybe my 12:10-12:15 tops. The restaurant was full... I kind of knew what I had settled on for the menu and I apologize for no menu pictures, im usually good at that. Anyways we chose to have a flautas appetizer, and I went with the classic #1 combo of 1 crunchy shredded beef taco, and 1 cheese enchilada with rice and beans. I am so happy I chose El Coyote. The beans were just how I like, refried, mashed well, a lot of cheese on top. The rice was great, fully in love with both the enchilada and taco. Flautas were great too, but that was more of the wife ordering because that's her thing. I knew I was in for a meal as it was with what I ordered. I took pics of the outside, and a few of inside to show the ambiance. I really enjoyed my meal I will say that we did get decent service up until the food was served, but it was hard to get someone to check on us, or even get the check after. The food was delicious and hot; my Chile relleno was excellent, and everyone in our party of 6 raved about their meal. The chips and a variety of salsas served immediately set the tone for quality right away. Service was top notch as well. Our waitress did not write a thing down, yet she refilled our drinks and served our food with no mistakes, and she checked in on us more than once. The owner of the restaurant even roamed from table to table greeting her customers with a smile and an opportunity to comment on their experience. Hadn't been here in years (pre-covid) & will not be back. I was so disappointed . I used to really like this place! The food quality was terrible! Not to mention the prices have drastically gone up (what hasn't these days). Ordered a sangria (12.75) & just a small glass really worth 6 bucks! Chips and salsa is gratis; however, one small bowl is provided with two small containers of salsa (mild and spicy). Ordered the two item combo for 22.75 (chile relleno and tamale) & both were terrible! The tamale was a sweet corn with green chile served with a side of awful salsa which tasted just like tomato sauce. Another shocker was the bill which came to 77 bucks before tip. Service was excellent and the staff was very friendly, hence the two star rating, otherwise I would have given it one star. read more

We were initially sat in a really dark corner (near the bathrooms) and had to find a waiter to move us outside because it was so dark and there was a very loud group of ladies who's voices echoed in the cove area we sat in. I have been wanting to try this place for years but I rarely come to this side of town. Parking lot is small and limited. I got here 45 minutes after it opened and it was already pretty crowded. I wanted to experience the ambiance of this place so we asked to sit in a dark spot and they accomplished that with no problem. The service was really great. Staff were very friendly and helpful overall. Prices of the food are a little high BUT I think it was worth it. The chicken quesadilla and carnitas wet burrito were absolutely delicious! My wife had buffalo tacos and those were incredible. The margaritas were good but nothing special. I was pretty disappointed to see how tiny and limited the bar area was. The food is absolutely amazing as well as ambience BUT the service is very concerning. One of our meals didn't come with the side of guac/pico that clearly said on the menu it came with our meal, so we ask, get a rude response, and get the side. Our waitress wasn't attentive to us as far as not asking if we wanted water/soda refills until she brought the check which was at the very end, but even then she took 10-15mins to actually bring us our check and soda refill... THEN decided to not pick up our check for another 10 mins, mind you its late, I'm tired and trying to go home so we went up to another waiter who wasn't busy and he got our waitress to charge us. My family and I visited this restaurant for the first time today and we truly enjoyed our dining experience. The restaurant itself is older but that's what makes this place fun. It appears that most everything in here is original. Our waitress Carla, was ABSOLUTELY the BEST!! She was very welcoming, friendly, hard-working and very attentive. The food was EXCELLENT!! The chips and salsa were GREAT!! The combo appetizer which included jalapeño poppers, a cheese quesadilla, and flautas w/ guacamole and sour cream were well prepared and delicious. Next came the fish taco combo which consisted of two huge fish tacos, rice and beans. Wow! The tacos were fresh, tasty and filling. The lighting in the restaurant was a tad on the dark side which made it a challenge to take pics w/o using flash which I don't like to do. My husband decided to bring my daughter and I to this restaurant, and WOW! It was delicious! I had the fish taco combination plate. The fish was not breaded too much, and it was cooked to perfection; with a delicious green sauce on the side. Giving the rice and beans two thumbs up because they tasted authentic. My reason for a four star instead of 5 is because it was really dark inside with a small candle and minimal lighting at the table. Make sure to take sunglasses with you on a bright day because you will definitely be blinded, when you walk out. read more

Chips and salsa were good I will say. But I got the enchiladas Howard's way and it was just not Mexican food. It also looked gross. A bunch of pork chilli smothered on top of the enchiladas, and it blended in with the beans, it just looked like a plate of mush and it also didn't taste good. I don't know what it is about this place but the service has gone downhill. I popped in to kill some time as I was early meeting up someone. Mid afternoon on a Friday, got a table in the bar area. It wasn't busy in there as there were only two other tables occupied. Checked in with hostess. It took a long while till someone actually came up to me asking if I was ready. First off, didn't have a menu. So waited for that and then a little while longer to order a drink. And then, had to look for someone to ask for some chips and salsa. There was literally no one anywhere. Finally, took a while for everything. Also, the cocktails for the price is HORRIBLE. Should have remembered from the last time that the margaritas was a waste of 18.00. And almost 10.00 for a pint of beer. I don't know if they were short staff or what but for a Friday, you would thought. It seemed like the waiter was the only one for the entire restaurant taking orders, restaurants and bar area. I did notice a few members were just standing around when I went to the restroom. The service was horrible as well as cocktails. El Coyote cafe opened in 1931 and is nearly a 100 years old! It has a lot of history. The decor and the interior transports you to a new realm. It's very lively inside, and staff wear traditional Mexican attire. But that's pretty much all I enjoyed during my visit here during a weekend dinner time, unfortunately. The food was very average. The guacamole, pico, and salsa were very bland. We both got burritos and it didn't taste that flavorful. They sent me "La Cocina" style by mistake too. It was difficult to get our waiter's attention, and the inside of the restaurant is very loud and bustling -- it would not be a great place to catch up with friends nor would it be a good date spot, in my opinion. I will say the margaritas were delicious though. Valet parking was a steep $10. Overall, I'd recommend this place for drinks only. I don't see myself coming back here for the food. read more

This is a famous tourist Mexican restaurant, however the food and drinks do lack. Their famous house margarita ($13.75) was mediocre - I just had better margaritas elsewhere. The Carnitas Street Tacos ($14) could have used more flavor. They were very busy when we arrived and there was a long wait. Fortunately, we were able to get seating in the bar area, which is first come first serve. The servers are dressed in traditional Mexican attire and the restaurant is decorated with colored lights and signed photographs of celebrities. I just feel like El Coyote is more of a tourist destination than a place to get quality food. El Coyote is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays and they do have valet parking. read more

Went to El Coyote for lunch and it was amazing. I ordered the scratch margarita and it was hands down the best margarita I've ever had. We started with the fresca guacamole, which was delicious. For my entrée, I got the Howard Enchilada and it was absolutely worth the trip from San Diego. What truly made this experience exceptional, though, was the service from Rocio. Having spent years working in the restaurant industry and dining out often, I can confidently say she is one of the best servers I've ever had. Attentive, warm, and genuinely made the entire experience memorable and special. El Coyote is a must-visit, and if you're lucky enough to be taken care of by Rocio, you're in for an unforgettable meal. We'll absolutely be back. read more
