I had a great Father's Day with my son. We drove to the Grove and had a wonderful lunch at a Mexican restaurant called Alma Cochina de Mexico that is upstairs with a large patio outside, a smaller patio on the ground floor and two dining areas inside. We were seated upstairs inside as it was warm outside and we were going to two watch parties for the World Cup at the Grove afterwards. I ordered a Tamarindo margarita which was delicious and the 3 tacos Al pastor. The tacos were excellent and the chips and salsa were hard to stop eating. My son ordered a cocktail and huevos rancheros. The service was excellent and it kicked off a great Fathers Day. Service was friendly but distracted. Often felt forgotten. Rice and beans were both tasty, tho added at an extra charge. The Baja tacos, served w lemon, were surprisingly flavorful, w the tang of pickled onion and crunch of slaw. The tortillas were lazily prepared and served damn near raw. Yesterday on Mother's Day, we visited ALMA Cocina de Mexico at The Grove. The place was absolutely packed. Without a reservation, it honestly looked almost impossible to get in. Thankfully, I had booked ahead, so we were seated without too much trouble. Walking inside felt like stepping into a cozy restaurant near a beach in Mexico. The warm lighting, soft atmosphere, and beautiful fresh flower arrangements made the whole space feel charming and alive. It wasn't overly flashy -- just warm, elegant, and inviting. Even the small detail of having purse hooks next to the table felt thoughtful and classy. At first, I was genuinely impressed. Then the little cracks started showing. The water glasses were heavy and beautiful, but the moment I took a sip, there was a noticeable fishy smell from the cup. It immediately made me wonder if the glasses hadn't been cleaned properly. It may sound minor, but small details like that can completely break the dining experience. We ordered French toast, oysters, and the beef & shrimp fajitas, along with mojitos. The food itself was decent. Not "life-changing amazing," but still enjoyable enough to have a pleasant meal. The real disappointment was the service. The beef & shrimp fajitas took forever to arrive. On top of that, I specifically ordered flour tortillas, but they brought corn tortillas instead. By the time they corrected the order and finally brought the flour tortillas, I was basically finished eating already. What made it worse was that no sauces were provided, and nobody even asked if we needed any. I eventually had to ask myself, and by the time the sauces arrived, the meal was practically over. Everything related to the food and service felt painfully slow. But somehow -- the second we asked for the check? It appeared almost instantly. That part honestly made me laugh a little. The food took forever, the service disappeared most of the meal, but the bill arrived at lightning speed. It almost felt like, "Okay, time to leave now." Not once did anyone mention dessert, recommend anything sweet, or ask if we wanted coffee or another drink. So we simply paid and left. Another uncomfortable part was the layout. There was a narrow walkway right beside our table, and servers constantly squeezed between tables instead of using the wider pathway nearby. While eating, people kept brushing past the table, which made the experience feel cramped and distracting. The restaurant is undeniably beautiful. The interior alone makes it feel Instagram-worthy and memorable. I could honestly see myself returning one day just for the atmosphere and aesthetics. But beautiful decor can only carry a restaurant so far. Slow food, inconsistent service, missing details, and poor pacing left a disappointing impression overall. Once was enough for the experience. Very disappointing experience. We were a party of 6 and were automatically charged a 20% "large party" service fee without clear disclosure, and the restaurant also applied tax to that charge. After we brought this to the manager's attention, the bill was adjusted to remove both the service charge and the tax on that charge. However, the fact that it was added in the first place felt misleading. Even worse, the service did not justify any mandatory charge. Our server came by only twice--no refills, no follow-up, and no attention to the table. Charging a mandatory 20% for that level of service is unreasonable. The food was underwhelming. The chicken fajitas were bland, the guacamole had little flavor, and overall everything was just average. The only thing worth mentioning was the tortillas. Overall, the experience fell short due to the lack of transparency and poor service, and I would not return. read more

A few days before our reservation, Chris personally called me to let me know how excited he was for us and that he wanted to make our engagement celebration special. That phone call alone made me feel like we were in great hands. On the day of our reservation, Chris arrived early, introduced himself, and even offered to record my proposal. He captured the entire moment and later shared a high-quality video with me - something we'll cherish forever. After the proposal, my fiancée and I joined our eight closest friends for lunch, and Chris had prepared an incredible table for us. It featured a beautiful floral centerpiece, rose petals covering the table, and he even surprised us with a complimentary bottle of champagne and champagne glasses to celebrate our engagement. We went to the Grove last night because my baby wanted to see the "snow." We didn't have too much time before the next spewing of it, so we decided to go to Alma, so that we'd have a nice view of the whole Christmas scene, lights, tree and fountains As insanely packed as the Grove was, I really was expecting a wait. To my surprise, the hostess, who was notably congenial, was able to seat us immediately, on the outside patio, where we would have a great view of the snow coming down. I had the Caesar salad with chicken. It was decent, not totally fantastic, but a large portion. For me, more than enough to take home and have a whole meal the next day. Also ordered: Cheese enchiladas (tasted them and they were incredible!) and chicken tinga tacos with rice and beans. They have a bit of a tag team system so the service was attentive, but our main server Kevin was very special. Welcoming, down to earth--super charming. So I ate at this place for my sister-in-laws graduation dinner (Go Bruins!). Service was good and my enchiladas arrived timely. Unfortunately, the dinner was ruined after I bit into a steel "hex nut" the size of a nickel. I bit onto it with my porcelain crown tooth which luckily didn't break as it costs hundreds of dollars to replace. Everyone was scared to eat their food afterwards and the vibes were ruined. I will summarize what happened afterwards. Initially, the manager offered to cover just my meal and drinks (I only drank water so that wasn't much). I told the manager that I wanted the full bill covered. He told me he had to ask the "general manager" for permission. About 10-15 minutes later he comes back and says the general manager is willing to discount 50% off the $500 bill and comp my meal. He also gave me a free margarita and offered more food (I def didn't want anymore food). This sounds decent until you realize that broken dental work can cost thousands to replace and metal in your food is a legit safety hazard. I repeated that I wanted the full bill to be covered. He said he would have to call the general manager again to ask for permission. At this point, the dinner is ruined and everyone is done eating, so him calling to "negotiate" customer service would just waste more time. He tells me they also removed the gratuity charge to reduce my total cost, but to consider tipping because it was not the waiter's fault and the tip would only go to the waiter. I tipped the waiter $40 cash just being kind. On the way out, the waiter did not apologize to me or even look at me. To the general manager, I hope the $250 you saved by not covering the bill was worth getting this review posted. I wouldn't have posted it if you did the right thing. The Grove is always an experience. We had a couple of birthdays to celebrate during the holidays. I HIGHLY recommend reservations no matter when you plan to go. It would have been impossible to get it on the night we went. We showed up early but they affirmed that they would only take us at the time of our reservation. We showed up at our scheduled time and were welcomed in. Our waitstaff were on point with drinks and food. Great staff! Anyone who has ready my reviews knows that I love margaritas. This place had good margaritas. Not the best ive ever had but they do make the top 5 (and I've had a lot!). Spring for the good tequila silver too. You won't regret that! I have the mole enchilada meal. It completely blew me away. One of my friends tried the mole sauce and said it was "just like grandma's." Parking is always a concern. The restaurant will validate for 2 hours or less. If you are there more than 2 hours, it will not help you. I was a bit shocked by the bill but, as I said, The Grove is an experience. Expect to pay more than your local Mexican restaurant. I would definitely go back to celebrate a special occasion. Well worth the extra money. read more

We were walking around the Grove the evening of Thanksgiving so stores and small eateries were closed, but the full service restaurants were still open. We didn't have any reservations, but they were able to seat us. The food was good! The free salsa at every table was more smoky than spicy, but they have a spicier salsa if you ask. Guacamole was creamy and fresh. My family sampled a few different tacos and enjoyed it. I got the enchiladas and was really impressed with how much meat they packed in since a lot of restaurants skimp on protein. Do I think this is the best upscale Mexican spot in LA? No, but this place still has a lot to offer. They have a delightful mix of fusion, unique dishes along with classics. The drinks and mocktails were good. And the ingredient quality was clear. For Beverly Hills, this is probably one of the standout spots where the aesthetics AND food are solid. Also all the servers were extremely helpful. They split of tables seemed a little confusing and I don't think they anticipated the number of people that would come in on Thanksgiving so they were a little scrambled. But they made sure we were well taken care of and had so many recommendations and went out of their way to make sure we were satisfied. Also it is a beautiful restaurant! Had a great lunch at this spot. Came on a weekday for a date with my wife. This place is always packed on the weekends so it was nice to see it pretty empty on a weekday (same for most of the Grove). We had a house margarita, tablita, and plenty of chips and salsa to start. We shared a plate of 5 tacos. We got the chicken tinga, al pastor, and birria. The chicken and al pastor were perfect, and the side of salsa with rice and beans are nice add-ons. The birria was not good because one of tacos was pretty fatty and for us that meant inedible. I'm sure if we told them they would have replaced it but we were pretty full at that point and needed to get going. Servers were on top of it there and very helpful. Great location inside the Grove with the fountain next to you. Makes for a romantic lunch or just a nice relaxing time. Hope you tey it out and enjoy! read more

We were a table of 6 with terrible service. We were there for 2 hours and got our waters refilled one time and had to ask. Our drinks that we ordered were forgotten about and we had to ask again for them. One of us ordered a steak and the waitress told us they were giving it to us for a "generous price" and it ended up being a $275 steak. The food wasn't worth the pricing either. They also forgot to bring us our bill and were not willing to split it. I don't recommend this place unless ur willing to drop $800 for a couple of tacos, a drink, and a steak. read more

We been here a few time and the place is always nice. Good is usually good. But this time everything was amazing. Partially due to his server Randy. He was so pleasant and attentive. Made great drink recommendation. And their new seasonal sea food molcajete was delicious !!!!! He has been by far the best server we've had here from the 5 times we've came.
