The pizza guy at La Porta has an amazing imagination putting together ingredients that I would never think of doing. But the end result is an explosion of taste that you want to keep coming back for. We were happy to see a new pizza/Italian restaurant open nearby. We eat out a lot, and went 4 times over the past few weeks. First time, ordered entrees and appetizers. The appetizers arrived after we finished eating. It was their first week open, so we gave them a pass. Second time, order a salad as an appetizer. No salad ever came, had to ask for it to be taken off the bill. Third time, tried to order baked clams before our meals. Again, no baked clams arrived. Fourth time ordered pizzas. Gave up on the appetizers. The personal size pizzas are good. Entrees are good, but very small side portion of spaghetti. Spaghetti is inexpensive, please give a larger portion. They need a lot of training, and better ingredients here. The restaurant atmosphere is nice enough, but I think that's about it. My wife and I did not order much--we just wanted to give it a first try. We live locally and took a walk here and sat at the bar. I asked the young bartender what kind of red wine they had, and asked to try one--a Nero D'Avola. It was terrible, so I passed on the wine. He seemed really inexperienced with everything. We then ordered just 3 simple things: a meat and cheese board appetizer, a caesar salad and one of their Margarita pizzas. Here's where some training is needed: Almost immediately, the salad came out which was out of place--I expected the appetizer first. Then, everything else came out out of order, with the pizza next, the last was the meat and cheese board, which I assumed would be first. This was so strange, and everything and everyone seemed so confused. Also, the plate that the salad came on must have just come out of the dishwasher--it was steaming hot. Why you would put a salad, which should be cold, on a hot plate is beyond me. At least the dressing was pretty good. These are mistake that show a complete lack of oversight and experience running a kitchen. The food: Caesar dressing was OK, the pizza crust was not thin, crisp and flavorful; it was too soft and too thick and the sauce and cheese did not have much flavor. Edible but not great at all. The meat and cheese board was the worst offender, though--the cheeses were not very tasty and the meats were dry as-in being old, and everything tasted like cheap products. A small bowl with a few olives and a couple of tasteless thin bread sticks. No other bread, no olive oil, no fruit spread, no nuts, no dried fruits, basically nothing to enhance this board, just the meat the cheese. They need to take a 2 mile drive to DelVino vinyards to learn how to do a quality meat and cheese board--and everything else for that mater, even their pizza. They are buying cheap ingredients, and it shows. We won't be going back. They need some serious, experienced management help, better ingredients, and training here. What a hot mess. read more

There are at least five local pizza places in or near Norhtport Village. Which to try first? Haven't eaten pizza in 3 years, seriously - a young man at a local lunch place told me this was one of his favorite places. Even though the place he worked for owns a competitor, this was the one he recommended. I headed over, and met some nice exttra friendly staff, and tried their regular slices and came back for their chicken parmigiana pizza. Both were good. There was distinctly fresh basil in the sauce which was nice. When doing a pizza contest between the village pizzeria's La Porta came out on top, slightly edging out Nina's who is also good though cheesier/chewier. La Porta's crust was a bit thinner, and sauce a bit tangier. And the three chefs were all friendlier than anywhere.. They plan to rolll out chicken fingers this summer, as one of the cooks special recipes. My adivice was to get the right honey mustard. Lol read more

They've been hit or miss with me, like some of the other places on my list, but recently they've been pretty consistent. They have a really good regular slice these days. The crust is thin but crispy over on the top part where you hold it, but it can get a little soggy since they do sort of load these things down with cheese and olive oil. There is a nice bit of flakiness to the crust that I like. The sauce is tasty without being remarkable. Their Sicilian slice is very good but it is far too thick. Like almost 2 inches thick. However, according to the women I've spoken to, thickness is better than length. The service is always very friendly. There's a nice hometown feel in this little village spot. I eat here often because I perform in plays at the theater that's right above the pizzeria. The only downside is that these guys close at 8 PM on weekdays. La Porta Pizza staff and owner treated us wonderfully. I had about 15 kids come to celebrate my daughter's birthday and the staff and owner helped in accomodating us with plenty of delicious pizza. Wow, Northport knows pizza! Came here after hitting some bars in the area and we're helped right away. Granted the place was empty as it is still early spring, we were helped immediately by the friendly gentleman working the counter. The atmosphere is classic pizzeria and has a clean bathroom, which is always a plus. I ordered a regular slice and a fresh mozzarella slice. I was so impressed with the flavors of both slices! Perfectly cooked and both were covered in the perfect amount of sauce and cheese. They also had hot sauce available on the table which was incredible! Pretty thin slices but not burnt at all. Pizza is solid, but not like "omg my favorite". Reason I am giving them 5 stars: I ordered for delivery one night. It had been 1.5 hours, so I called to ask wtf. They told me they'd be there any minute and apologized... I was hangry af at this point. Anyway, a few minutes later, the owner himself (in his apron) came to deliver me the pizza and sandwich. He gave me an extra sandwich for free, introduced himself as the owner, and apologized to me for the delay. He also refused my tip and thanked me for my business. I dunno... We all screw up (and this wasn't even a big screw up, they were just late), but he went the extra mile to make it right. It meant a lot. Just passing through Northport on a beautiful, sunny fall afternoon couldn't resist La Porta's two slice plus 16 oz. drink special plus the Italian salad for a quick lunch. Perfect texture crust (ohhhhh, how I miss that in Ohiooooooo!!) and great sauce/cheese ratio. Went to eat here but left. It was over priced for a pie. It also seemed a bit pretentious, handwritten signs in several spots. Charging 25 cents for a cups of tap water? Really? Also a sign on the soda machine threatening to double charge anyone who dare put soda is a water cup. Not saying people should be doing that, but the note was a major turn off. Okay so I'm really REALLY not one to judge and I like to respect other people and their business. Idk if I'm just confused but, so I got the appetizer loaded cheese fries. I'm a college student on a date with my boyfriend and I wanted something cheep $5 or under, looked at the menu and saw that they were $4.95(now Ik that's not plus tax). I paid $7.01 for this app and my boyfriend got a whole meal for almost the exact same price at the same place. Idk if I missed something I feel like I've been over charged and to kinda top that, the person that rung me up didn't smile once, I mean they were kinda nice but I work in retail which Ik is different but you still have customers,I force a smile after working 5 hours standing there greeting every single person that walks in with a smile, then a break and then I work another 4 and repeat what I did for the other last 5 hours. I guess everyone is trained differently in different work places but I mean at-least smile just a crack,I'm sorry if you had a bad day but ur working and in that kind of environment you put the customers first it's like that everywhere at almost every work place. My boyfriend and I kinda felt unwanted. But my main reason for this post is because I think I was overcharged for an appetizer and normally when something is a small price the tax is like maybe a dollar? But when it's like a $10 meal I can understand a tax being like almost $3 still kinda bonkers to me but idk. La Porta is very good, very authentic New York-style pizza right down in the village. The staff is friendly and the pizza is well constructed and the ingredients taste very fresh. It's a small place, so it's good to take out, but still it's nice when there isn't many people in there. I personally rank it right up next to Gino's as far as great pizza goes in the downtown vicinity, completely outshining Nina's.
