Such a fun, beautiful, and challenging course! Went here for my partners birthday & really LOVED this course. We've been to tons of golf courses, but this was by far the best course I've ever played. The conditions of the course were great. The red tees are positioned perfectly. Some courses have them too far back. Par 3's were fun & intimidating. Almost always water and or bunkers! This was also an affordable round. $84 including cart! Can't wait to come back! The staff were also so nice as well! read more

Must hit greens in regulations to have a chance to score well but greens keep needs to learn the game as almost every pin was put in places which are not recommended by PGA rules. I.e. Need to be able to stop the ball around cup four paces from edges etc. tons of water and traps. Rough is death. Not a course for high handicap players and for sure a no room for error All facilities great staff makes up for what I think is a tricked out almost unplayable course Ranger putting greens and chipping area. Beautifully designed, links-style sans the coast but a sea of bunkers and tight fairways. Thought I was storming Normandy. Not particularly long but paramount you're accurate or risk taking a drop shot every time you hit in the rough, left or right. I wouldn't even describe it as "rough," more like African Savannah including wildlife. Even if you are big slicer or hooker it probably won't be far enough to carry the rough on either side. Just make sure you stock up on balls. Temperature will typically be triple digits but the course provides a cooler in each cart and a station behind the clubhouse to load up on ice, styrofoam cups, lids, straws and water. Cart wench was a senior citizen which violates labor laws and frankly, unacceptable (on an attractive scale) for a place of this caliber. I don't practice ageism, GILFS are acceptable. read more

This was a pretty fun track around La Quinta. I would have played the Mountain Course, but it was closed to a tournament. The dunes came as a nice surprise. I typically don't like being pinched around residential houses on a course, but the links style of play worked well in this case. The course was very damp when I played, yet the greens were extremely fast (like most desert courses). The links style of undulating greens and approaches was a slightly different style of play. However, in typical Pete Dye fashion, you can find yourself in big trouble if you don't hit a precise green shot. Good luck putting. I can't imagine playing this course when it's not wet. I walked the course since I knew it was cart path only, but wasn't aware that most of the cart paths disappear into the fairways which force the carts on the fairways anyways. Beyond that the course is very narrow so it wasn't unnecessary to bring a push cart. That said...I wouldn't recommend walking it. There are also a couple of gaps in between holes that are quite lengthy (10 min walks). Reasonably priced, and you can find deals through La Quinta's website if you book there. I found the 15-20 mins in a earlier tee time saved me about $20 or so. read more

Great track, friendly staff and a fair price for the course. The lady that checked me in was helpful and welcoming, as was the starter, the bartender, the cart-lady and the gentleman that grabbed my clubs from my car. The front 9 is almost a desert take on a links course, while the back 9 seems to have much greater changes in elevation and winds through the mountains a bit more. Two totally different feels to these 9's, and both were enjoyable in their own right. Shot -1 on the back nine for a 77 on the day, will definitely be back! read more

You can do better. The course was damaged by recent heavy rains but the lack of green winter grass makes it hard to see your landing areas especially around green where sand traps are hard to discern from the brown grass. This is not a particularly pretty course as it winds through housing developments. On many holes the only green near the hole was the green itself plus a small collar. The staff is the only bright spot...they were to a person helpful and courteous. read more

Great course for the La Quinta Resort Golf Courses. Unlike the Greg norman course this had holes with rough, but not just rough but knee length tall grass which if you hit your ball into, forget about it and just drop a ball. We always got scared walking through it that a snake was going to bite us. Thankfully only there were only about 6 holes that really affected us. This course has lots of water in play but as long as you can drive carry the ball the first 160 yards relatively straight you'll be fine. I did wish at the turn there was some sort of snack bar or something, but nope, after you finish the ninth hole, it goes straight into the 10th. GPS in the cart, plus an ice chest and water cooler. read more

After missing the entrance five times we finally arrived at our destination. The best we can hope for in California is lush fairways and greens with intentionally burned out rough. That is as good as it gets at most courses in this state. We were paired with a couple of friendly and humorous Brits. The greens here aren't quite as nasty as I recalled from two and a half years ago. Black Gold definitely has tougher greens. The Brits played Black Gold and other Orange County courses and agreed that the Black Gold greens were filthy. read more

Dunes course is great to play, pace of play has always been 4-4:15 Greens are tough and the elevation changes make you think to score. I booked a 1:00 pm time through the course's web page for the Monday after Stagecoach for $49. I hadn't played the Dunes course for more than 25 years and wanted to see if it had changed. I hit a few balls on the nice grass range and went to talk to the Starter. He was very helpful. Apparently there was a foursome of two couples about to tee off. He suggested that I bypass number one and catch a group that was on number two. He said I could come back after my round and play #1 and 2. The course was in great condition. The fairways were in good shape and the rough was playable though the fairways were a little soft shortening roll out on tee shots. The greens held good approaches, despite the lack of a significant ball mark. There are several interesting holes and enough elevation change to keep in interesting. The course is very manageable from the white tees for the bogey golfer from the standpoint of length. However, the greens drove me nuts. The putted faster than they looked and had some breaks, both subtle and dramatic that made putting and chipping a challenge. The greens reward precise shots, but on a few greens, slightly off line or short iron shots end up in very deep bunkers or other ugly places. This is definitely a course I'd play better after a few rounds. The course had changed a bit, as a few railroad tie water hazard bulkheads were gone. It is still a great example of Pete Dye's 1980s heyday. Carts have a very good GPS system with a hole preview video to help guide the player. Pace of play was excellent as we completed 18 holes in just over 3 1/2 hours. Dunes is still challenging, but was in outstanding condition. The bar/grill room has a spectacular view of the course and surrounding mountains. By the way, remember that foursome that the starter had me bypass? When we had completed playing #1 and 2, I found my way back to 18 to play my way in. They were driving around looking for the 14th tee! Props to Mr. Starter for saving me 90 minutes of frustration! I'll give Dunes 5 stars for the combination of design, condition and service. read more

Course is stunning and in Top notch shape...Those Pete Dye courses are VERY VERY TOUGH....minimum 5 sandtraps per hole and greens are FAST as lightening...Very expensive to play here....Service in pro shop was great, however you actually had to call for players assistance just so they could send the cart girl out...she only came one time in 4hrs 30min play.....THERE is NOWHERE To stop after the 9th hole, you have to go directly to hotel 10...so you better stock up on food and beverage before hand. read more
