    Dunes Course
    Luke W.

This was a pretty fun track around La Quinta. I would have played the Mountain Course, but it was closed to a tournament. The dunes came as a nice surprise. I typically don't like being pinched around residential houses on a course, but the links style of play worked well in this case. The course was very damp when I played, yet the greens were extremely fast (like most desert courses). The links style of undulating greens and approaches was a slightly different style of play. However, in typical Pete Dye fashion, you can find yourself in big trouble if you don't hit a precise green shot. Good luck putting. I can't imagine playing this course when it's not wet. I walked the course since I knew it was cart path only, but wasn't aware that most of the cart paths disappear into the fairways which force the carts on the fairways anyways. Beyond that the course is very narrow so it wasn't unnecessary to bring a push cart. That said...I wouldn't recommend walking it. There are also a couple of gaps in between holes that are quite lengthy (10 min walks). Reasonably priced, and you can find deals through La Quinta's website if you book there. I found the 15-20 mins in a earlier tee time saved me about $20 or so.

Great course for the La Quinta Resort Golf Courses. Unlike the Greg norman course this had holes with rough, but not just rough but knee length tall grass which if you hit your ball into, forget about it and just drop a ball. We always got scared walking through it that a snake was going to bite us. Thankfully only there were only about 6 holes that really affected us. This course has lots of water in play but as long as you can drive carry the ball the first 160 yards relatively straight you'll be fine. I did wish at the turn there was some sort of snack bar or something, but nope, after you finish the ninth hole, it goes straight into the 10th. GPS in the cart, plus an ice chest and water cooler.

Even if you are big slicer or hooker it probably won't be far enough to carry the rough on either side.

The course itself is demanding, lots of waste areas that you need to avoid. The conditions were good the day we played. The greens were excellent. I would definitely come back and see how it develops.

The biggest issue was I was also charged $45 for a non-golfer rider--the same price I paid to actually play the round. The woman at the front desk told me it was because my rider would be "taking away a cart" from another golfer. The irony? I was sent out as a single, so there never was another golfer to share the cart with. Charging someone the full cost of a round based on a hypothetical situation that never even happened is a ridiculous policy and left a terrible first impression. To make matters worse, I passed two marshals sitting in their carts with their heads buried in their phones. They could have easily helped me locate a ball if they were paying attention to the hole they were sitting on. The bright spot was the cart staff. They were friendly, cleaned my clubs, and even offered extra water as we were leaving. They provided the best customer service of the day. It's a shame because the course itself is enjoyable and has a great layout, but the overall experience is let down by poor communication, questionable policies, and poor management. With better customer service and transparency, this could easily be a course I'd recommend. Right now, it's hard to justify coming back.

This set of holes has to be the prettiest I have seen, as of yet. Traditions course is expansive and very well laid out. The greens are very well kept, as are the grounds around it. The houses that have been built into the course are massive as well as beautiful, boasting equally as scenic views from virtually everywhere. My favorite part of this course has to be the 17th, it is not for the faint of heart or those who lose their balance easily. The climb up is steep and rocky, and a bit scary on the way down as well. Once at the top, you will see what I am speaking of, a grand seemingly endless view of the not only the course but of the vast San Jacinto Mountains, and the valleys between the ranges. Is there a better way to spend a beautiful summer like afternoon in March? I sure can't think of anything. Except maybe to follow up a nice game with an old fashioned or two. Which is exactly what we did, on the lovely patio in the club house. Which provided more wonderful views for our party to enjoy while relaxing. If the opportunity presents itself I would love to make a return visit. Next time I hope I have the set of Taylormade's I have had my eye on.

The staff was very helpful in getting me quickly to the tee box which I appreciated. My play was a little scrappy in the beginning but it took me a few holes to get used to the course. Overall the course was in mediocre condition specifically the fairways were tight and thin, and the greens were very scrappy and bumpy. There also were many dead/brown spots on almost all the greens. The course itself had a few scenic holes that played against the mountainside. For the price, I was not too surprised at the condition of the course. I could not find the Dunes course here so my review for it will go here. In the afternoon I played the Dunes course which was a flatter Pete Dye course running side by side to the Mountain course. Unfortunately the course was also in the same condition of the Mountain course. The only problem was the 120 degree F weather I had to contend with. I honestly lasted 16 holes before succumbing to the heat on the last two holes. In all honesty, I will probably spend more time on the three PGA West courses about 10 minutes further south, before considering these courses. Also the prices did match the quality of these courses.
