We had to make a very quick stop at La Segunda Bakery on our way to the Dali museum because we went just before closing. I'm happy to report that I was very pleased with the items I got. It's a super small and cozy bakery, everything looked amazing. I got one of those Latin shortbread (torticas de morón) cookies and the Ybor's Muffaletta sandwich and it was all super yummy. I've gone to the La Segunda Central's Ybor location since I was a kid. I was born in Ybor. The St. Pete location on 4th St. is a fantastic reminder of my more nostalgic visits to the original bakery on 15th St. in Ybor. I love the wall of photos. We come here almost always for breakfast. Our most recent go-to breakfast sandwich is the Avocado Sandwich. Tons of fresh avocado, sun dried tomato paste, eggs, red pepper flakes (they give you a packet so that you can add whatever degree of heat you want) ... It's certainly big enough for the two of us to share. And for me, it's all about the Cuban bread. Baked at the Ybor location and sent over to St. Pete. It's the best! Of course breakfast dessert of a delicious, flaky, guava pastry. Filled to the max with guava! Again, best guava pastry around. Cafe con leche is our breakfast beverage of choice. Grew up going to the original La Segunda in Ybor City, so when we moved to Pinellas County I was excited to be able to get their food without having to cross the bay. I was very pleasantly surprised that there was no drop-off in the quality of their food that you sometimes find when restaurants open additional outlets. The service is awesome. Each employee is helpful and accommodating. They add to the experience. While it doesn't have the same old-school ambience of the Ybor location, it is pleasant and it has dine-in seating. They used the wrong bread and under toasted, cheese unmelted...had nothing else in it...it was a basic ham and cheese sandwich and they culturally appropriate it as Cuban to sell it..it has nothing Cuban about it. Super overpriced as well for what it was. Also gave us cold pastries with cheese and couldn't heat for us. Not coming back. I tried the Patrinostro. This was so good. Packed with meat and veggies. So fresh and of course the bread was amazing!! Fast casual place so place your order, grab a number and have a seat. I suggest reading the menu before getting in line because it is really hard to choose and I find that the folks that go here pretty much know what they want and have little patience to wait for those of us who like to browse. While I love the Ybor location for all of the OPTIONS for sweet pastry treats*, I love this location for when I want to sit down and really enjoy my Cuban. It's never not been busy, but the line moves quickly, and my order always comes out to me within 5-10 minutes, hot and gooey and dripping with fat and juices, served on a basic 1/8th-sheet pan. No frills, no fuss, just magical food! I can never finish a whole one, so I'm thankful that they keep to-go boxes out on a table by the door (no need to hassle staff for boxes). I take it home and press it the next day (or a few hours later) for my next meal, and it's *almost* as good... *This location has sweets too, but a much smaller selection, and basically when they're out, they're out for the day! read more
