Spectacular Tequila selection and mix of Mexican inspired gourmet entrees. Service was a little spotty. We were seated and waited about 10 minutes for our waiter to acknowledge us, then the kitchen was slow. Wow. Interesting! Word of advice, this place will add 18% tip without telling you and give you a bill with a add tip on it. We ordered 8 different plates & none of their food was good unfortunately! At least not their price worth... (Including the tapa & the scallops which were not fresh & really fishy!) if you know sea food you know it's not suppose to be fishy if it's fresh. I finally made it to Cocina De La Sirena. And while I went into mourning for a spell when Manna Bread and Wine left, I have to say - I love what the new proprietors have done with the place. The setting is relaxed yet classy. The service my wife and I received was exceptional. Our waiter was attentive, courteous yet funny, and extremely knowledgeable about the menu, the restaurant vision, events, food choices, wine pairings, etc. And the green chili queso - oh my, you had me at well, "green chili queso." Need I say more? This may have been the best chips and queso pairing I have ever had. Not sure why I have never seen this combination before, but it should probably be a staple throughout Texas and New Mexico. My stacked enchilada was also very good. There is no other way to describe this other than an extreme and delightful panoply of flavors and ingredients (fried egg on an enchilada? Why yes, it is good...) works amazingly well. I waffled on whether to go with red or green sauce, so the waiter helpfully suggested that I should just do both - good call! Lubbock is ever in need of such places with real food. TLDR La Sirena is a rare gem no matter where you're from. There's great food for almost everyone (full-on omnivore with a propensity for new discoveries, vegetarian, vegan, or food restrictive). Account for flavor, proper preparation, & quality presentation is part of the package. You'd be hard pressed to find a more original array of cocktails and justified respect for mezcal. And its ambient atmosphere makes the entire experience complete. Th' Long We're from Austin, and stopped here by recommendation for the first time last year. My memory of the various combinations of ingredients, which ultimately made our meal a work of art, do not do justice to the chef's processes. But, to give it a try: I had a medium rare, grass fed, locally sourced ribeye served with rainbow carrots & green chiles(?). My brother had a well prepared quail, which I think came with a watermelon and goat cheese crumbles(?). Also, we shared some fried avocado tostadas that we were told were a must try. "WHOLLY" DANG, BATMAN...I'm not a big fan of the food porn pictures, but confess that I took a few that night (see attached). This weekend was our second visit to Lubbock, and we had to come back for more. Honestly, a restaurant's food should speak for itself, and this place could do just that (if taste was all there was to it). But, to us, it's much more than this. Even in "crunchy granola" Austin (which I take pride in), it's difficult to find a place that takes origin into account as part of its whole food experience. But, whether you're just "up-to-date with the latest food news", whether you've followed Michael Pollan from "Omnivor's Dilemma" to "In Defense of Food", or you (like my lady friend) have food restrictions, La Sirena probably has something for you - not as an afterthought or as simply a means by which to cater to trends, but as a customer who deserves to dine both health consciously and with gusto. I don't always go straight for the red meat. But, because my previous experience was so great, I got the filet this time - cooked to perfection once again. Our server, Eli, recommended the perfect cocktail to compliment my meal (my memory of the name fails me, so that I wish I'd written this yesterday). On his recommendation, we finished with a seasonal eggnog flan - an experience that brought me from believing that flan is overrated to being both awe struck by the genius of using eggnog, and at the same time realizing that improperly sourced milk products (and the lack of flavor that comes with them) are probably my main complaint with most flan. Lastly, we got to talk to the chef last night. She trained in Austin! Experience complete! After reading some of the reviews (and as a business owner) I know that you can't please everyone. But, as one who has been health and food conscious since I was truly capable of independent thought, and who grew up following recipes from "Pasquale's Kitchen," & "Great Chefs..." I would proudly put my modest li'l stamp of approval on Cocina de La Sirena. I know that society, in its mad dash for fast and bountiful, has incidentally strayed away from the wholesome goodness of food in its natural complexity, and as a result the lost/forgotten nuances of "whole" food can be a little robust for some. But, this is a place where you can either feast like a king or dine lightly and consciously - either way without the guilt or fear of having eaten something that (on the back of some package) you can't pronounce and/or don't want to know about. I took my 78 year old mother to dinner last night and it was by far the best dining experience I have had in Lubbock to date. We started with the ceviche and empanadas and from the pastry crust to the cilantro cream it was outstanding. We had the green chile stacked enchiladas and the carne asada and it was evident from every bite that this was an artist in the kitchen who took pride in her work. Gabriel, our waiter, was attentive, informative and just plain fun. Just when I thought they could not impress me any more, we ordered coffee and dessert. The flan and wedding cookies were as good as any abuelita could make and the french press coffee was excellent. I will see you all again real soon. I have been looking forward to eating at this restaurant for literally months. I talked the boyf into going and was so charmed by the interior decor here. There is a cute, tiny bar and little mermaids tucked away everywhere. The lighting is a dream, and incredibly flattering. The feel of the place is what saved this experience. We ordered a ceviche, a charcuterie tray, and some "street tacos." All three were incredibly lacking, especially considering their price. I have eaten at upscale places, playing at being casual frequently. It's my favorite vibe for restaurants. Like the bourgeoisie remembering their roots. It totally has that feel, and I love it, but was really bummed with the taste of the food made from such fine ingredients and priced accordingly. If I'm going to eat a ceviche out of a margarita glass (which is stunningly inconvenient, who would have guessed) I want it to taste complex and interesting OR like something an abuelita would have made. It was NEITHER . It was remarkably bland. It was my favorite thing we had that night. The charcuterie tray featured some nice dried apricots, dates, and almonds- all of which were foreign and exciting in so much as they were exotic, but not particularly different tasting from their typical counterparts. There was also a Strong blue cheese which I thought was very risky of the restaurant, and I felt like it was a flop. Blue cheeses, I feel, are not popular enough to warrant taking the risk on one so smelly. I hated it. There was another cheese on the tray- a manchego I believe- that was simple and good. I could have built a faaaaaaar better charcuterie tray at home and spent half the money. The street tacos had lamb in them. I was THRILLED ordering it. And I cannot tell you how disappointing it was to gt a food item that had lack-luster tortillas, stringy stringy stringy meat, that if it had been cooked for another 90 seconds probably would have been perfectly raw, but able to be bitten through. NO SPICE. LITTLE FLAVOR. Over-conceptualized, hyper-pretentious, and a fall-flat-on-face FAIL. Service was spotty and rushed feeling. Jesus Christ, could you even TRY to make this worth my money. This is **supposedly** a Spanish food place. Really, it's coastal Mexican done POORLY. The need to hire someone's grandmother to revamp the recipes and critique their cooking practices. So pleased with my dining experience at Cocina De La Sirena. A mellow atmosphere perfect for date night or meeting up with friends. I started with a glass of wine, shrimp ceviche, and poblano fries. I could probably eat the poblano fries every day for the rest of my life, they were so delicious. We splurged on our entree and ordered the duck confit mole...Holy moly. The duck fell right off the bone and it was topped with roasted plantains which we fought over. Fresh ingredients and perfectly cooked. The atmosphere was inviting and full of character, the food and cocktails were amazing, and the waiter was very helpful. So I came here for one of the most awkward dinners of my life. I found La Sirena on yelp and decided we should take my boyfriend's family who hate each other there after his graduation from tech. It was upscale but not insanely priced, and my boyfriend's mother is a vegan with a lot of serious food allergies, and La Sirena was recommended as a good option. Our server was absolutely amazing. As my boyfriend's family seethed and launched barbs at each other, he remained polite and upbeat, never acknowledging what was surely an awkward table to wait. He was wonderful about my FMIL's food allergies and ran back to the kitchen multiple times to confirm ingredients, never once showing a trace of exasperation. I waited tables for 10 years, and I'm rarely impressed by service, but I was absolutely blown away by how good our server (josh?) was. He was so polite, attentive, and had great server etiquette. I don't think I've ever had a better server, and I'm counting myself there! Honestly Josh, Kudos!!! You were FANTASTIC. We had great service, an exclusive feeling table, but the food..... the food was AMAZING. So glad we found this enchanting restaurant! We enjoyed our dinner so much we had to return 48 hours later. I loved the salmon which was cooked to perfection & could not get the taste of my husband's mole on steak out of my mind. We just had to go back. We expanded our appetizer selection from the excellent queso to their other unique sauces. The restaurant & staff are very helpful and are willing to provide a plate of cut up veggies to use w/the queso instead of chips as well as substitute sides for dietary demands. We had the queso, the ceviche, the street tacos and the empanadas and they all were unique, they put kind of a twist on everything. The empanadas were our favorite. Over a 4 hr period we spent a $1000 bill. As soon as we paid they chased us out and someone came out who acted like a bouncer pushing us out. And was very provoking when I asked why he was so pushy and and actually tried to lure me into escalation. I actually walked out. We had Extended aged family from out of town for daughters graduation. Very surprised of the attitude and think their formula is cost per hour per table which I believe we exceeded. The only thing I can think is the ownership does not have a professional management style and this reflects a bit on the employees. First the positives: I really enjoyed the atmosphere, michelada and street tacos. The tacos were small but heavenly. The negatives: my appetizer of chips and salsa was quite strange to say the least. They put oregano in their salsa, which is a huge no no. The ceviche was inedible, it had no flavor and was lacking in both presentation and flavor. I'm used of a very acidic ceviche. The ceviche here is bland as can be. You know it's sad when the highlight of the ceviche dish are the yucca chips and not the fish itself.
