I've heard a lot about this place from my friends. I happened to be in Azusa so me and the lady decided to give it a try. There is a lot of talk about the chips and salsa, and true to form they were good. The chips were crisp and tasty, the salsa fresh. I would of liked a little more heat, but it was very tasty. I ordered the combo plate, and at 10 dollars, it was quite the deal. Every thing was good. The beans and rice were good. The taco and taquito were tasty. The enchilada and chile verde was also tasty. Nothing "out of this world", but was fresh and had a nice flavor. The place itself is huge and very pretty. They have lots of seating and huge tvs to watch. Not sure I'd go out of my way to eat here, but it is definitely worth trying and if in the area, sure, the place is tasty. read more

We have been going to La Tolteca for many years. I have brought large crowds for dinners 30+ and even smaller groups around 10. But, my family and I we go about once a month. That will be no longer, today we went in to have dinner with my in laws and ordered the shredded beef as my dinner by the pound as I am doing low carb. Which I have done many times over the last couple of years. I also ordered a taco plate and bean and cheese burrito. When I ordered the lady asked if I wanted the shredded beef cold or hot, I replied hot I am going to eat it now so hot please she replied okay. So the server brought our food minus the shredded beef and my wife asked the server if he could bring an extra plate when he bring the shredded beef. Well the shredded beef never came out so after at least 10 minutes I walk over and ask where the shredded beef was and a different server said let me check. Well I saw the original server and asked why the shredded beef wasn't brought out. He said I didn't see any shredded beef. I said okay the other server went to go check on it. So I walk up to the counter and they didn't make it they thought it was to go. I said specifically told the lady taking my order it was for here. So I asked to speak to the manager. This is where the real issue was as none of the servers had been rude or out of line simply trying to get my shredded beef. Nathan walks over and he is one of sons from the family that owns it. He walks up and says how can I help. I tell him the story of me waiting for 10 minutes after part of my food was brought to the table then walking up to ask what happened to the rest of my food..and he says. It hadn't been 10 minutes I looked at my watch and it had been 5 minutes. That was comical like who looks at their watch when food gets served? I said oh now you're going to say I'm lying .. he said no I wouldn't say that. I mean come on.. you're going to call me liar without using the word liar because that's what you did. He went on to say..Well we don't serve the shredded beef by the pound for dine in any longer because people treat it like a potluck. I said well it's on the menu and the cashier knew I ordered it why wasn't I told then? He said I don't know but we don't do it. Is there something else I could help you with? Without taking any accountability for the miscommunication. I said well I would like you to address what asked you from the beginning. He said well we just don't offer that for dine in ... is there something else I could help you with? I said so that's it? You're not going to address that nobody told me I couldn't order that for dine in when I specifically asked for that? He then said I know who you are ..you and I have talked before shaking his head. I said yes we have because I am one to speak up when I have poor service or something isn't right. He said I'm not going to argue with you. Which we really weren't arguing we were discussing what happened and the lack of responsibility for the communication. I wasn't looking for a handout. I go to eat somewhere as a family I expect to be served at the same time so we can enjoy our meal as a family. My take from this is that as they have grown as a business they have forgotten what originally made this business grow so large which is their customers. Without customers you don't have a business.. after this incident I will be looking for other hole in the wall Mexican food restaurants to spend my money. read more

This place has great value. If you don't order a drink, for 95% of the menu, you'll be under $10. Also, for the amount you get (a side of beans, rice, chips, and salsa) you are getting a great deal! The flavor was not outstanding, but for what it is (which is a comfort food, bigger than a hole in the wall restaurant) it was just fine! Get the fish tacos... Parking is just fine! A little tight when busy, but not bad. The menu is busy... But easy to navigate after a few seconds of staring and thinking. The staff is busy but very nice. There is plenty of seating! Fast service, good prices. Food could use more flavor and the tacos weren't hot when we got them.

We ate at La Tolteca last Friday ( a strange thing happened a dog had come in off the streets and was roaming around the restaurant until they finally noticed and get it out. I was disappointed with the pattern of service and the stray dog but the food was good. I decided to go back again today with a different guest. I ordered for my guest and we split up at the register as I had already ordered and paid. Apparently, Nathan the manager (owner's son) scolded my guest for sitting down and grilled her about how many were in our group as well as interrupting her phone call. He very rudely exclaimed that next time she has to order and then be seated. Sir there will not be a next time. We had been coming to la tolteca since it was in its original building and even had family that worked there. Our church group used to buy catering sized orders there as well. As my guest came back to the front she let me know what had happened and would rather not eat there anymore. Of course I didn't feel comfortable eating without my guest so I had to ask for a refund. During that exchange Nathan made his way towards us and scolded us again about the signage in the front. I also found it rude and condescending and arrogant that he would treat his customers that way. It's great to see small businesses grow and I love to support small business and mom and pop shops and will choose these places over corporate chains but in this case I can see how hospitality and humble beginnings have disappeared. Nathan smugly and arrogantly stood there as the cashier had me sign some receipt and watched us leave as if we were not valued patrons. I am very disappointed because I never expected this person to treat us this way. Also they don't serve Coca-Cola. We will not be returning, and definitely can't recommend. read more

This place use to be good. I came in just recently since I moved and I was dissappointed with the quality. Its funny when the food was good the prices were cheaper, now the quality is not as it good and its price has gone up. Salsa not the good, the rice was greasy and the beans where so overheated they were dry on my plate. Hopefully, they can go back to how it use to be. I should of paid attention to friends not to come in. The only reason I am giving them 2 stars because I liked the chips. read more

I came here Sunday Morning just to stop by for coffee that my Mom wanted. We ended up ordering a breakfast burrito and some carnitas. We ordered and paid at the cash register since it was to go. The cashier gave my mom and unnecessary comment when she showed criticism towards my mom for wanting 5 packets of sugar. The cashier told her she'll get diabetes that way. My Mom felt very offended and didn't feel like asking for a refill or more sugar after she finished her first cup of coffee. I went to go ask for a refill and sugars. She had plenty of time to drink the second cup since it took them about 20 minutes to make our food. The carnitas was good but the breakfast burrito was drench in oil. I've been coming to this place for years and years and it's just as good now as it was back in the day! I love their chips and salsa! I love how they give free chips and salsa now and free refills. The new location is nicer too. The food's always hot and tasty and the staff are always super nice and helpful. I pretty much have always stuck to either their taco or enchilada plates. My hubby and I love it here. Our favorite place. His dad was good friends with the managers and when he passed away they placed a glass of wine at the bar where he always sat. A consistently good family owned Mexican Restaurant. Best chips and salsa anywhere fresh made on both counts every day. Love the chili relleno best anywhere. Burritos are amazing. My go to place for great food My only criticism is that if you order a la carte you pay extra for chips and salsa. We have been going here for years to buy our MASA for tamales but something happened this year. I went in on a Sunday morning to buy my Masa and everything was already prepared and waiting at home. The young lady told me they do not have any masa. I asked her how long will it be for The masa to be ready and she replied "maybe" and I repeat maybe tomorrow. I was shocked, that had never happened before in all the years that I had bought masa there. I had no choice but to go somewhere else to buy the masa and they are ruined . The masa was not the same and I am contemplating whether or not to even give these to my coworkers and friends. The following weekend my sister tried to order hers ahead of time because of what happened to me and they told her they do not take pre-orders snd suggested she be there at 8 am. The next morning she showed up at eight in the morning and the girl nonchalantly said she was unsure if they even had any. This is unacceptable when you spent so much time and money and preparations for tamales.I guess we have to find a new location because we cannot risk prepping all the food items and them not having masa for this ongoing family tradition.. again we love there masa but if you cannot count on them I guess we have to find somewhere new I'm wondering if they have a new ownership or management? We live about 20 miles away but we've been a customer for over 40 years. They quality has never changed. If you stop in, make sure you place a to go order of tortillas, chips and salsa. Disappointed...have been coming here for years and have seen the deterioration of quality in the food, it's gotten to just be a step above taco bell to me. The salsa is watered down unless you ask for the Spicier one. The chips are thick, hard. The customers are outrageously creative when it comes to getting all the food you can shove down your throat, no shame. They steal salt shakers, get water cups and then fill with soda. Don't respect the sign that clearly states to get your food B4 you find a seat. I feel sorry for the servers those young men work hard and deal with some very rude people. The prices are reasonable for all the food you get. I posted a picture. I got the beef enchilada combo that comes with rice, beans and chips with salsa. This place is going downhill and it's really sad because it use to be so good. Service was extremely slow tonight which is usually not the case. They switched from real large plastic cups to small throw away to go cups. My son ordered a wet bean & cheese burrito with a side of rice and beans. They put the rice in the burrito. When we told our waiter that's not what we ordered we were told that that's how they do it. He said if you order a side they put it inside, that doesn't even make sense. Grilled shrimp, rice, beans, guacamole & pico with a strawberry-mango margarita to wash it all down. Everything was well seasoned and reasonably priced.
