We went here for dinner. It's a casual spot with a nice-looking bar. Our host and waitress were very nice and service was prompt. We ordered their classic margeritas, which we really liked. Our drinks and appetizers were definitely the highlight. The guacamole tasted very good, and they added crumbled cheese (queso?) on top - I was skeptical at first, but it actually complimented the flavor very well. At the end of an afternoon in the City by the Sea, we were looking for a light meal & remembered that La Vecina has half priced appetizers from 4-6pm Sunday through Thursday in the off season. Perfect! It was easy to find a seat at their bar at this early hour. We love the fun, bright atmosphere here and it's a great place to eat at the long bar. There are an array of "antojitos" on their menu which make it easy to come up with a meal. We ordered the Nachos (adding Chicken Tinga and a side of Poblano Cheese Dip because there can never be too much cheese!), Beef Empanadas, Pineapple-Serrano Shrimp & a pitcher of the House Margaritas. The nachos were a surprisingly large portions - immediately making us wonder if we'd ordered too much. The chips were fresh & the chicken flavorful. We were happy for the extra cheese dip for the chips without toppings. The empanadas were flavorful and the chimichurri a perfect foil. I loved the shrimp! Sweet, spicy, savory, crunchy - the whole package. The House Margaritas are tasty and were almost too ample for us to finish. The bartender was friendly & helpful, though perhaps a bit inattentive at times - often an issue in many places during slow periods. While the prices here do seem a bit lofty for a taqueria, this is a fun place, in a great location with carefully prepared food & a fun atmosphere. We went here after seeing a show at the Jane Pickets theatre and there were plenty of seats at the bar area. We were greeted by our bartender who was friendly enough but did appear preoccupied by side work as it was towards the end of their night. I had an omelette for brunch yesterday which was fabulous!! I'm usually a "bene" girl but I was in the mood to try something different. The La Vecina Omelette with Pork Carnitas as my protein but they had other options too. Our server was friendly and efficient...she took pride in her job and really spoke highly about the chef. I'd like to start off my saying our food was delicious! We got the carnitas tacos for 2. The meat, the corn tortillas, rice, beans, and cilantro topping was so yummy. 5/5 for the food! We really enjoyed the salsa and the valentina offered on the table . The Tres Leches dessert tasted great. Unfortunately, the serving size is extremely tiny for the price. The cake "slice" is served in the same cup they use for salsa. Typically when you order tres leches it's a square slice on a plate. We also paid $3 for a sprite (no refills), which we were fine with originally, but then our waiter brought out a sprite mini can. Which you can pay $6 for a 10 pack in most grocery stores. We didn't love that. Our bill was pretty expensive for one shared entree and 2 non alcoholic drinks. For what we paid at most restaurants would get you 2 entrees, 2 drinks, and a dessert. I also got charged $4 for an extra side of corn tortillas, which sort of surprised me because that's not something i've ever experienced at a restaurant. Went here for dinner with friends, we had a reservation and the host said our table would be ready in 30 minutes. What's the point of making a reservation if they overbook themselves? The host didn't apologize for the delay. We decided to wait and then ordered a variety of tacos. They were the small "street taco" size, weren't particularly warm, and flavor wasn't anything to write home about. The layout is poorly designed as well because when there's people sitting at the bar, 2 people can't get down the walkway between the bar and the tables. So every time the waiter had to wait for people to pass by before weaving their way back and forth from the kitchen or to their tables. The mural is pretty but I'd say that's the only redeeming quality of the restaurant. There are PLENTY of better restaurants in Newport and I'd recommend you go anywhere else. read more

Came in here for lunch. It was a hot day, so we were dying for water and the server very kindly brought over an extra glass filled with ice. Service was definitely good here. We asked if they had any aguas frescas and the server said yes: horchata, watermelon... and we stopped her right there. Nothing would be better on a day like that than some refreshing watermelon juice. Well, what they served was a glass of ice filled with water with a faint hint of watermelon. And they had the gall to charge $8 for this "agua fresca". Watermelon is cheap in the summer! Why are you skimping? Just put it in the blender, add a little sugar to taste and you've got the perfect summer drink. What they served was not anything that resembled an agua fresca. We each got the three tacos plate since it was brunch. They used corn tortillas, good, but they were pale and a little stiff, so they tore under the weight. Did they know you're supposed to heat up the tortilla on the stovetop to make it more pliable? The fish taco was fine, a little less fish than I expected, but it had a decent taste. The corn and maitake taco was fine in conception -- the crunch of the corn went great with the earthiness of the mushrooms -- but this was swimming in aioli, which made it seem like creamed corn in a taco. Lastly, the chorizo and potatoes (aka chorizo y papas) had an utterly bizarre flavor. I could taste the chorizo and its distinctive annatto, so I don't think that was it. Instead, I think the culprit was the potatoes, which were tiny morsels of a grey color. Not sure what preparation they did to them before adding to the chorizo, but it didn't taste good. Each taco had a lot of lime in it too, whether warranted or not. The plate came with Spanish rice and beans. The rice was undercooked (still hard in the middle, far from al dente) and had no flavor. How is this possible? It had tomatoes, so were they not ripe? Was there no seasoning? The beans had more flavor to me and they had legit cotija cheese, but they were also dry. At a Mexican restaurant, the rice and beans isn't an afterthought, it's the backbone of every dish. You do that right and then make everything else better. Frankly, this feels like what happens when someone looks at a Mexican menu, thinks they could do that (and charge twice as much) and has no clue about the techniques involved. We popped in honestly because we were hungry AF and because it started suddenly pouring as we were walking by this place.
