I really enjoyed shopping at La Superior Supermercado for a long time. It's one of the only nearby stores that accepts WIC, and I specifically come here for the butcher shop because the meat is always fresh. Over time, though, I've experienced moments that made me uncomfortable -- customers crowding me in line while I'm trying to pay with a baby in a stroller, people standing right beside me trying to rush me through checkout, and an overall tense atmosphere. I brushed those experiences off because I genuinely liked shopping here. Today changed that. My boyfriend and I walked there to buy pork from the butcher counter. We also got a few little trinkets for our kids from the coin machine. While we were walking away, a security guard abruptly cut me off so closely that I almost tripped, and he didn't even say "excuse me." Again, I tried to ignore it. Then while we were standing near the hot food section reading the menu and talking about what we wanted, an employee walked up, flipped the "open" sign to "closed," and verbally told us they were closed -- even after we explained we were only looking at the menu. It felt unnecessarily hostile and dismissive. We continued shopping, got our meat, checked out, and struggled toward the exit carrying groceries because we're currently on foot and don't have a car. The final straw was the security guard at the door. He didn't offer to help with the door, but he did glare at me the entire way out. I stopped outside to make sure I wasn't imagining it, and he continued staring and muttering at both my boyfriend and me. My boyfriend is Korean and Filipino, and I am Black. We left feeling extremely uncomfortable, unwelcome, and othered. The sign on the front door says this is a "safe place." I believed that meant safe and welcoming for everyone. I've personally tried to support this store by posting Know Your Rights zines with whistles and learning how to be a better community ally. That's part of why this experience hurt so much. It was deeply disappointing and disrespectful. Unfortunately, I will not be returning. read more

Pretty big location with parking available on the sides of the building. Looks like it is fenced all around. The store was pretty clean and had a big variety of foods that were also well stocked. We were on the search for some items to make some homemade avocado salsa. They had everything we needed. While walking around the store they do have a fresh meat market side, a restaurant for some hot foods and as well as some fresh baked breads/cookies and more. I have always loved ordering food at the Mexican supermarkets so I decided to give this place a try. I regret having come here. I absolutely do not recommend getting the empanadas, pupusas, or gorditas here. I didn't even take a picture of the food because of how unappetizing it was and had to throw it out. Nothing was fresh. Went here to just pickup some salsa but ended up having Mexican breakfast. Ordered the machaca combo for $7.99. I really liked the refried beans tasty and kind of runny the way I like them although I'm not a big bean eater. Rice was really good too. The machaca was a little different from I've had at other restaurants, they use carne asada instead of shredded beef and marinated jalapeños and carrots instead of onions and bell pepper. However it tasted really good and the portion size was huge. Could have used a little more egg though. Overall I liked it especially for the price. read more

On FRIDAY & Saturday, this place supports a hot Taqueria style walk up food service that is excellent. It has a huge revolving cientele, I watched as people of all nationalities drifted thru ordering freshly cooked Carne Asada, Carnitas, LaPastor, Lengua, Tripas, and the list goes on. I ordered four tacos for $6 bucks. - The salsa bar is exceptional with guacamole and sliced condiments to add to your meal. This place is awesome!!! It does only a small selection of mexican type food - but it does it very very well. The general/grocery store is also very good, offering your typical staples and some home made items. read more

The meat choices are I would recommend getting a drink if you get the red sauce, the green is more forgiving. If you are really hungry go for the burrito. It is big, filling, and reasonably priced. Bring cash of course and they do charge tax. The al pastor (marinated pork) is ready after 7pm. It sits spinning in all its glory in front the window with a nice huge chunk of pineapple on top awesome. They slice it off and grill it up right there... soooo good. Important review here. I want to qualify this review first. I've spent years driving around Sacramento sampling tacos from taco trucks. I've tried them all. I really have. My favorite tacos in the entire Sacramento area on a street vendor level are by far from Tacos La Victoria. They only open up the trailer on Friday and Saturday nights I think. I'm not totally certain on that but I do know that they are the bomb dot com. They're seriously delicious. The pastor are awesome as are the Asada. There's usually a short line which is how you know they are good. Prices are good too. $1.50 per taco. The area is super sketchy so pay attention to your surroundings at all times. No one should mess with you at the taco stand but just be careful and watch yourself and your stuff. It's worth the risk anyway. read more

It's a small store and if you're in a hurry you may want to skip this place because even on the weekends they only have ONE checkout open. I've been going to La Victoria off and on for years. It was my Mexican market of choice before La Superior came to town, but I've been back a few times recently and have rediscovered what a great little place it is. The real surprise is how good the food is that they put out in the tiny restaurant area in the back. I've had their carnitas tacos and both red and green enchilada plates. The food has a nice, homemade quality to it and the ladies who run the kitchen are very sweet-the plates were works of art. It's not quite up to Lalo's, but it's better than La Superior's tacqueria or La Fiesta/Favorita. Pretty authentic tasting food, but no chips and salsa bar (which makes it all the more authentic). They also have THE best housemade red salsa de arbol in town--buy some to take home! BTW, you figure out what you want, go up front to pay at the cash register and take the ticket back to order your food. If you want to experience the whole La Victoria "experience", do a shopping trip combined with lunch. The meat counter is the best looking, spiffiest one in town and the prices are way lower than La Superior. $2.49 a pound for the pork cubes I use for pozole. They have greatly improved their produce selection and they have one of the best selections of dried chiles I've seen in Sacramento. The grocery aisles are perfectly packed and arranged and look really cool with all the funky labels on the Mexican canned goods (I'm easily amused, folks). P.S. If you go, be sure to pick up a jar of "De La Suegra" chile oil--both the black and red varieties--it's da bomb! They are now housed in a much nicer location next door to the old store in what used to be a great electronics store. The kitchen is expanded and the store is larger. One bummer--they don't have the De La Suegra chile oil anymore, but I've found a good replacement at 99 Ranch Market--Laoganma Chili Oil--I've been putting it on everything. We had lunch here yesterday after cruising by Chando's and laughing at the long lines. I had Beef Soup and my friend had a super burrito that must have weighed 5 pounds! My soup was great and Rodney liked his burrito--especially since it was only $4.50! read more

Okay, so I went back again for the tacos.... still delicious. One of my friends went inside the store and bought carnitas - deep fried chunks of pork meat - from the deli and kindly asked the taco guys to make tacos for us since carnitas is not on their regular menu. Those carnitas were some of the best! Very tender, not dry, and full of flavor. Those taco guys outside should add them to their regular menu of meat choices. I highly recommend the carnitas. It is actually January 2012 and I am just now finishing up this review. Talk about procrastination, oy vey! Me and a few coworkers hit this supermarket [or rather, the taco stand] pretty much every weekend we were in Sacramento. We are STILL talking about those gosh darned tacos!
