Took my wife here for her birthday. The restaurant is a traditional French restaurant. It doesn't push any culinary boundaries or try to do anything new. And while that isn't a bad thing when you are looking for a specific, classic, traditional, regional cuisine... it would have been nice to find a little creativity or adventurousness in the menu beyond your classic duck confit, fois gras, and steak frites. But if that is what you are looking for, then you could do much worse than La Voile. All that being said, I had no complaints about the quality and preparation of the food that we ordered. Everything was cooked perfectly and the balance of flavors was excellent. My wife ordered the filet mignon and I ordered the dover sole. Both were very good and we enjoyed our meal. The portions were generous. My only complaint was that you have to pay extra for some of the sides. That being said, if you want a classic French dish done well, and good service in a pleasant ambiance, I think you will be pleased with this place. read more

Lived in the area for many years and never realized they had this french restaurant here. We got here on a weekend night and the hostess was not inviting when she approached and greeted us with no smile and just expressionless. There were 2 levels of dining area which the main level was already occupied so she seated us upstairs and it was pretty empty and surprisingly she seated us right beside another couples who were very annoying and loud (might as well shared a table with them) that's how close we were. That was definitely a negative and even as the night went on there weren't too many ended up eating upatairs so why seat us right beside these people. The food was pretty good and the drinks were made right but will think about coming here again. read more

We booked La Voile Brookline for our wedding rehearsal dinner and post-dinner drinks, and I can honestly say it was the BEST group dining and service experience I've had in my life. Jérôme and his staff went above and beyond to make sure that our family and friends had an excellent time. Literally everyone in my family told me individually how impressed they were with the dinner, desert, and service from the staff. My wife and I went back a few months later after our wedding, and it was again a memorable and amazing service experience. They have a private room upstairs which we'll be booking for future events. We took a friend out for his birthday last night and, because he likes French food, we went to La Voile. What a deep disappointment. Let me list the disappointments: 1. Asked for lemons and ice with our sparkling water, twice. Finally got limes (not lemons) and never got ice. 2. Foie Gras was served with barbeque sauce (you read that correctly) 3. Onion soup was sweet 4. Chicken was overcooked (even though I had to wait 35 minutes for it to be cooked fresh, presumably) 5. Two persons ordered the Chocolate Mousse, which was described as tasting like cake frosting (one went back to the kitchen) 5. Waiter took our initial order and then disappeared to a party upstairs for the remainder of the night. We had to flag down people bussing tables and the manager to get any additional service. The manager did his best to ignore us. Abysmal! 6. On leaving, the Manager grilled me on why we left a low tip (not as low, BTW, as what my husband wanted to leave). And the only reason the manager was able to grill me on the tip was that I forgot my glasses and he held them hostage until I told him the reason for the tip. Unbelievable. Fantastic fancy French dining experience in Brookline. We went there on a Saturday night, had a reservation and got seated immediately. The place is relatively small, but was only about half full. We ordered delivery for my mom's birthday as she has limited mobility. We weren't expecting much because a drive in a car is never going to do food any good. But we were really pleasantly surprised. The food is hearty, delicious, full of flavor. Everything we ordered was interesting and very good. Also, we'd ordered sides thinking that it was a fancy enough place that those were extra, but we didn't actually need to. My family and I had dinner at La Voile for the first time recently. No special occasion, just craving for some casual French food. We did not order from the prix-fixe menu. Instead, we shared a bunch of appetizers and entrees. Fave appetizer was the pan-seared foie gras - I guess you can't really go wrong with foie gras. Best entree was the roasted duck breast - it was tender, crispy, savory, and tasted even better with the accompanying sides: sautéed spinach, cherry chutney, and sweet potato puree. We also enjoyed the Chef's mini desserts sampler: crème brûlée, apple tart, ice cream, chocolate cake, and chocolate mousse. The other dishes just weren't up to par that night. The onion soup was on the sweet side (too much brandy?). The mussels were meaty but at room-temperature :( The risotto was also lukewarm and could have been creamier. The sole meuniere was a good portion, cooked well, and served with a side of haricots vert, but overpriced AF at $44. At this price, it should also have been garnished with gold flakes or something. Also, they sold out of bœuf bourguignon at 7:30pm!! Our server was polite but not the most graceful swan... Silverware was dropped multiple times. Pouring wine meant clanging the glasses and dripping onto the menu. Then she used her bare hands to clean the table crumbs... someone, please get this poor girl a crumb cleaner!! I also overheard glasses shattered twice at the bar, yikes. The ambiance just wasn't as elegant as I expected. Overall, the experience was OK. I wouldn't mind coming back here for some items but also not rushing to return. read more

Came here for a private brunch event on a Sunday. The service was nice and the staff was accommodating; they allowed us to come in before opening because it was cold outside (we had no idea they didn't open for another half hour). The food we had was decadent. Quiche was heavenly and the salmon with lemon dill sauce and risotto was sinful. They have an upstairs space for private events which includes a coat check and a private bar. Intimate space but spacious enough to accommodate young children running around. Best service ever! My friend and I felt very welcoming from the point we entered the restaurant till we left. The food were amazing as well. We came in for the dine-out Boston, and we definitely recommend this restaurant to everyone. I really hope that I knew this restaurant earlier. Our waitress was extremely nice and attentive. She paid close attentions to us and took care of us for the whole night. We were served with really delicious warm bread and butter at the beginning, and our waitress continuously refilled the bread for us without the need to ask. My friend and I ordered foie gras and risotto for the appetizer, and an addition of les escargot which were very tender and flavorful. Then we had the roasted duck and braised beef shoulder for the main course. The roasted duck was the best I've ever had. It was cooked perfectly, and the duck was not too oily, but still tender. The sauce that came with it was just amazing, and everything on that plate were extremely tasty. Lastly, we had the puff and French meringue for the dessert. All of them tasted wonderful! From the small details, you could tell that the restaurant is very thoughtful into all of their dishes. Overall, this restaurant is definitely one of the best restaurant in Boston. read more

I had a delicious meal here the other day. Was able to walk in on a Saturday evening with no reservation, no fuss made about the gift card that I received courtesy of Dine Out Boston almost 2 years ago. Everything came out in a timely fashion and plated so beautifully, plus with good portions! Started with the foie gras and smoked salmon, then I had the scallop risotto and he had the lamb. We went in with a Groupon for a prixe fixe menu. I'm always a little nervous to go to a restaurant (especially a nice restaurant) with a Groupon since I worry that they hate Groupon users. I called ahead of time to make a reservation and make sure it would be ok to use it on a Friday night. They were very friendly over the phone and assured me that it would be fine. The reviews are correct--the service is SO gracious, from the host who greeted us to the very friendly and attentive server who took care of us all night. I wish I could remember her name! But, looking around at the other diners/servers, I think that they were all above par. The food was delicious, from the beginning appetizer through the dessert. Even my very finicky friend (known for sending food back as often as he doesn't) enjoyed every bite. We came here because of a Groupon that was expiring (as they always are). Happy that I called on a Saturday afternoon and they had room! Tiny restaurant in Brookline but well decorated with wood panels, model sailing ships etc. One expects small portions and a chef who is more interested in making a pretty plate than feeding people. My partner and I were pretty stunned by the lack of organization and professionalism at this restaurant. They do not seem to honor reservations at all. We made a dinner reservation a week in advance, confirmed it 24 hours in advance, and showed up on time, but they still asked us to wait 20 minutes for a table. They had no waiting area, and we were assured that the hostess would call us when our table was ready, so we went to a bar next door. We never got the call, nor the table. We got the escargot, rack of lamb, and filet de beouf. All of them were excellent and the mains came with delicious sides. I understand so many restaurants are short staffed due to Covid, but please plan accordingly. There was a large party upstairs which took up the majority of the staffs time. We had a 6:45 reservation for 5. We were immediately seated. Cold air blew directly on the table, which meant we all dined with our winter jackets on. I know that ventilation is required per Covid conditions. 15 min later someone came to give us menus and water. The bottle only had enough water for 3.5 glasses and we had to ask for more after no one came by after 10 min. We had to request someone to come over to take our drink and meal orders. After about another 30 min, we received our appetizers which were fine. Another 30 min our meals came. The duck was over cooked and tough as were the scallops. Le bourguignon arrived lukewarm. When they came to clear the table, the server said he would take the duck off the bill as it was inedible. We waited another 15 min until we asked for the dessert menu. All in all, we were in the restaurant for over 2 hours, and the last ones remaining in the dining room. People were washing dishes and glasses while we waited for the check. We had to ask for the check twice. They forgot to remove the duck from the check and a 20% gratuity was automatically added to the bill. Normally I would not have an issue with 20%+ tip, but in this case I would more than likely not have been so generous. If you know you have a large party in the upstairs room, please limit the number of diners you have in the main dining room. They get forgotten as the focus is on the big party. read more

It is creamy and I like it！The roasted duck leg also cooked well. But I do not recommend the floating island here. It is too sweet for me. I prefer the caramel brulee here. Someone who lives in the area recommended this quaint restaurant to us, and I had to write a review after dining there. It was by far one of the best meals I've had in such a long time!! Please excuse my gushing review! I am usually reluctant to order a prefix menu, but every single thing on it was something that I would have ordered anyway, and the price was remarkably reasonable. The salad was the best combination of flavors, with dried cranberries, sliced beans, and sliced peaches around the plate. On top was a slice of bread with the most unbelievable cheese with herbs and melted on top. I actually told the waiter to tell the chef that it was the best salad I have ever had! My main course was sliced duckling in a thick cherry sauce, including the cherries, with potatoes au gratin. My husband had sliced steak and chose fries which were so crispy and delicious I had to keep snagging some from him. But then there was the desert. OMG!! It was a molten lava torte, which they called a cake so I almost didn't order it. But if you're a chocolate lover this is the way to go. All in all, no complaints! read more

All of us chose from the select menu at $44.00 each, featuring 1/2 dozen appetizers, 1/2 dozen main courses, and any of the many desserts. This is a terrific value, as the typical cost of the first two courses is can be more than $44.00. We were a party of 14 guests, which can be a tough (too large) group to deal with, yet service was excellent. We were seated in the upstairs dining room, which is quiet enough for conversation. Downstairs seems a bit louder. A number of guests are regulars at this place; I can see why. Street parking only; you may need to park two blocks away. I apologized to my partner that our special dinner surprise had not worked out. Shame on me- the next night, I tried again. This time, our order arrived via delivery. However, we were missing an entire entree. I called the restaurant and they were willing to make the entree for which we had paid but refused to have it delivered again. I was so excited for my date with my boyfriend here and was extremely disappointed with the food. I had previously been to the Newbury location and had a great experience. The food from the Newbury location was phenomenal. There is a grotesque difference in food quality between the Brookline location and the Newbury one. One dish worth mentioning was the foie gras, it disgusting and there is nothing worse than gross tasting foie gras. The Newbury Street location was FAR better. ( 11-11-2018) Our meals were outstanding, I selected the La Terrine, which was delicious, while my husband chose Les Foie Grass and it was very GOOD!!! This is a wonderful French restaurant located in Washington Square, Brookline. Although I have never been to their sister restaurant on Newbury Street, I definitely prefer to come here because it is much easy to find a place to park your car nearby. We ordered la soupe a l'oignon, la terrine de foie gras, l'agneau, and la sole. Everything was excellent except foie gras which is a little too salty for us. I do not know whether they make their own foie gras or just import it from French. It is definitely not as good as we had in France. Next time I will ask for seared foie gras instead. One thing about this French restaurant surprised us was the portion of main course is much bigger than any of French restaurants we had. So we did not even have room for desserts this time. We will definitely go back for more. BTW, the staff at this restaurant was so nice and friendly. Our waitress even recommended us a wonderful wine based on our taste. Bravo! read more

La Voile management, you are not paying attention to your restaurant. Outdoor dining is truly terrible with rocky tables that are too small and seating in the hot sun with no umbrellas or shade of any kind and the accompanying sound of trollies as there no is barrier set up to separate from Beacon Street. I have enjoyed this restaurant for years but the dining experience is NOT a lovely evening out. My duck was medium rather than medium rare... yes I could have complained but our otherwise lovely server was nowhere to found so I just ate. My strong advice is to come here post pandemic as this restaurant has not figured out how to do memorable dining just now. Really not even close to our past experiences here. read more
