You know the place is authentic when old Japanese people eat here for lunch on a Sunday. My friend had told me about this place, so I needed to come visit. Parking was easy in the plaza. It's located right in the corner. Upon walking in, you could feel the decor really setting the mood. It wasn't crowded, but there were a few groups and the servers were speaking to them in Japanese. A TV was playing in the background with those day shows that no one would ever watch on purpose. We ended up both ordering the ahi tuna poke bowl. The food came out almost instantly. A+ for speed. First was the classic miso soup. Tasted fresh and of good quality, and especially nice on that chilly day. By the time I finished my soup, the bowls had arrived. The first interesting bit I have to point out is the bowls have a sort of vertical handle sticking up on one side. I've never seen someone hold a bowl like that, but I find it ingenious! I was so much in awe that I hesitated for a second before taking the bowl out of my server's hands. The tuna was beautiful. Lush texture. The sauce wasn't overpowering, although could have been slightly less salty. Cucumbers, a must and a plus. Also they had this wonderful black seaweed, I believe, that brought a nice contrast in texture. It's the little things that really just bring a dish from great to amazing. The service was kind, and I definitely left satisfied and pretty full from the size of the portion. I would definitely come back to try more of the menu! read more

When I was a little kid, I always used to see ladybugs around. Whenever I was playing in the grass or something, they would just be pretty much freakin' everywhere. Now, I don't know if you've ever seen one under a microscope or in a close-up in a ten-page foldout of "National Geographic", but those guys and gals are SUPER CREEPY. If you want nightmares for the next week-and-a-half, then go Google "close-up ladybug" right now. Go on, I'll wait. ...Why did you do that? WHY? I told you it was creepy. Ugh. So gross. But the reality is, ladybugs are awesome. They're super helpful for the plants around us; I mean, they eat aphids and all that jazz, right? Why am I talking about ladybugs? Well, I just wanted to share my infinite knowledge about Coccinellidae. See that? That's the FAMILY NAME of ladybugs. That's right, they're a FAMILY of BEETLES. LadyBEETLES doesn't sound so fun, does it? No, but really, the reason why I went on that big talk about ladybirds (that's right: these guys have like a trillion names) is because this place is named after our lovably creepy friends. And, much like its namesake, Ladybug Asian Grill looks really awesome (on Yelp), kind of interesting (when you walk in), but then ultimately ESSENTIAL (when you eat). Let me explain. Gardena is pretty much a city I haven't figured out yet. Whenever I'm in the area and feel like some exploring, I usually end up in Gardena because it's close to like everything. Okay, that's not true, but I AM always around here for some reason. Basically, finding the gems in Gardena is pretty tough on Yelp. I also have no friends in Gardena, or...You know, friends in general...Okay, this got depressing. Anyways, I came here after reading the great reviews and having a hankering for some good ol' FRESH fish. I knew what I wanted before I even walked in, and that was some spicy tuna with rice. Walking in, I first noticed that there were no customers. THIS IS AWESOME, actually, because that's sometimes when you know you've found an absolute jewel. Or, of course, sometimes you just hit a place that is horrible. Thankfully, this was not the latter. When you walk in, it doesn't really SEEM super Japanese. There's some music in Spanish playing and the vibe is, I don't know, worldly? Don't let that trick you, though. GO UP TO THAT COUNTER AND ORDER. Oh, well, go up there if you want to take it to-go. Sit down if you want to eat there, which is what I did. The kind waitress/cashier gave me a menu, and I ordered within seconds. Then, to my amazement, the food came out in minutes. WOW, it looked incredible. The miso soup was nice and hot and solid; like, I don't know, it was one of those miso soups where nothing was wrong with it. You know what I'm talkin' about. And if you don't, I completely and utterly failed you as a reviewer. And the bowl--oh boy, the bowl. That sucker was a ton of food even though I thought that the pictures made it seem measly and inadequate. This is the importance of putting something for a sense of scale in your pictures, like a banana (I guess that's the popular thing to do these days). The spicy tuna was, true to its name, pretty spicy. I love the Scoville scale, and it was perfect in that it was only enough to linger a little. I have seen plenty of restaurants totally overdo it, and it just ruins the tuna. Additionally, the consistency was incredibly good. The cucumbers perfectly contrasted the tuna with their watery goodness, and--come on--just look at that high quality picture I took. Don't the colors work out marvelously? Of course they do. Of course. Oh yeah, and the freshness was clearly there, and every single bite was straight from heaven or whatever secular alternative analogy you have. While I was sitting down, about three or four families came in to order take-out. So I guess tons of people do that. Keep it in mind, buds. The waitress was pretty attentive even though she was running the show (except for the cooking; there were some guys handling that) herself. I was happy with the service, and they made me feel at home. Parking outside is in a plaza, and it's shared with some other restaurants and a Korean pool hall. It was somewhat full but I managed to find a spot. I would imagine it's not that difficult usually, but I guess if it ever IS full, I did see some adjacent neighborhoods you could give a shot. Overall, the meal was really, really good. It was a super pleasant experience even though I haven't quite figured out Gardena yet. I don't really want to leave this bad review for a local establishment, but the wait to get our food was way too long. Also, I got my food about 10 minutes before my mom got hers. So by the time I ate mine, it was already cold. We also put in a to go order, which they completely forgot. We had to ask for it 3 times! We were done with our food and waited at least 15 minutes for the take out order. We should've just left, but we had already paid for it. read more

We used to love their food when they were at their old location. Since they merged with Bob's Hawaiian they raised their prices and changed their menu and downsized their combo selections and no longer offer the Lady Bug chicken with rolls combo, or the Kalbi with Lady Bug chicken (well they are no longer listed on the new menu, and when we unknowingly ordered these items they cost like $5 more!) The chicken was dry, and the salmon we ordered was tiny. The rice was extremely dry as well it was horrible. Sadly the quality went down while the prices went up. read more

This place should be called Cockroach Café instead of Ladybug Café. There were no ladybugs. Food is not good. I've tried to give this place a chance and tried various items on the menu, but there's no flavor at all. Chicken tastes like mystery meat. Overpriced for what it is. Will not be coming back to this place, and I don't recommend anyone who likes fusion/traditional Hawaiian food to try this place either. Not worth it anymore now that they combined with another restaurant. They increased prices and reduced portion sizes. Food quality has gone down as well. Katsu was dry and overcooked. We've been going to Ladybug since they were at their old location in a very small strip mall with impossible parking! Their food had always been great! The other night, we had the Miso Butterfish, the Beef Stew and the Poke plate and all were exceptional! Ladybug always reminds me of a typical mom and pop place in Hawaii. Another hidden gem in gardena. This is a great example of a cozy gem of a spot in a nondescript mall in Gardena. We came in and had kalbi bowls and chicken katsu. The service was great and both meals were delicious! The ribs were tender and flavorful, the katsu was moist with sauce was on point. To put it over the top, I highly recommend the chicken wings appetizer. The wings were exactly what you would want out of an appetizer - flavorful, medium size and enough for everyone to have a taste. Their prices are also very reasonable, so this makes dollars and sense sense if you have a family or a small group. A small little restaurant tucked in the corner of a plaza. I was in the mood for some Japanese curry when this place caught my eye. They have both chicken katsu curry and pork katsu curry; I went for pork. It was really good! Crispy coating on the pork, even rice-to-curry ratio, large portion and was just under $10 (chicken is cheaper). I also got the spicy tuna roll which was pretty good too, standard but zero complaints about it. A good place to grab a good meal! Worth coming back again. read more

I had the Portugese fried rice while others had various other dishes. The rice was not hot enough IMO and while plentiful, the flavors could have been more intense. Bottom line is I didnt catch the wok hei you normally get with really good fried rice at a Chinese restaurant. I felt like the sausage was cooked separately from the rice and both sat around and were mixed to order. Fried rice should be smoking not come out of the kitchen at room termperature. All the food is excellent but I will clue you in on my favorite "Ladybug fried chicken plate" but here is the secret , ask for the miso dressing meant for the side salad and use it as your dipping sauce! Quite pleased Ladybug merged and moved in with Bob's Hawaiian because the parking is soo much better at the Western Ave location. I sampled their Ladybug Breakfast Burrito which contains chashu, fried rice,egg and on the side green hot sauce. I liked how the burrito was wrapped in foil then cut in half placed in container. This kept the burrito quite warm. Hopefully dine-in service will return because this new location is quite more accommodating. read more

Previously Bob's Hawaian, under a new owner. The portions are more than ever with similar food. Unfortunately, they deleted the braised short ribs and the steak. While these were two of the most expensive items on the menu, they were still very popular! Another complaint I have is with the unnecessary amount of "SALT" the cook feels necessary to ad to all of the dishes. While many of the dishes are cooked in soy or other salty sauces, added salt just ruins the flavor! Every table in the restaurant has salt, pepper, soy sauce, on the table. I was excited to finally go here cuz of the great reviews!!! I went in and ordered a few things, the fried chicken plate, the teriyaki chicken plate and some spam musubi. Service was very good all the employees I felt with were very nice and professional. It's a cool little cafe. Unfortunately the food was the issue hence the 2 stars. The macaroni salad is a staple with Hawaiian dishes. The macaroni salad here was flavorless. Very bland. The fried chicken was the same. Somewhat bland not too flavorful. The musubi was ok, I think as long as you use spam can't go wrong. If I ever decide to come here again, it'll probably be for breakfast and not for lunch or dinner. read more

Lady Bug has been around forever, was going when it was just a smaller take out up the street next to McDonalds and H-Salt back in the day. Now it's located just West of Gardena Honda, in the middle center area of the mini mall surrounded by R&B Tea (great boba), and Yoshinoya to name a few, it's on the North side of Redondo Beach Blvd and Manhattan Pl. Too bad they closed that bank across the street, used to be flow over parking but now it's closed off so parking is hard at peak times. Anyways, what prompted me to write a review is the Poke bowl. I'm a fan of poke since my family is from Hawaii, but i normally come here for like the katsu (chicken/pork cutlet) and curry plate as it's filling. The atmosphere reminds me of the old J-town eateries anywhere (san jose, gardena, LA) the old places looked just like the inside of this place LOL. Brings back memories of a place i ate at as a child in San Jose. Anyways, it's like this old wood look that the old japanese food places all had and this place still has (classic). The food, i had a poke bowl today, really hit the spot. Here's what i expect in a poke bowl and it is what i received. Tender cut cubes of tuna, marinated in a light soy/sesame dressing, had some sort of re-hydrated seaweed salad which i normally don't like but for some reason it was very good on this poke. Some poke's have slivers of a sweet maybe maui type onion, this one didn't though, but had some sesame seeds, had cuts of cucumber around the edges and some pink ginger (typical with sushi). The rice itself was lightly mixed with sushi vinegar which is a must, it's so good! You can tell when you travel east and go sushi bars they still don't know that the rice needs sushi vinegar and will serve hand nigiri without any vinegar and so the sushi itself is terrible, had that in denver and other states. Anyways this place does it right and gives you a dab of wasabi which is so good with the tuna. Check my picture below, even my dog was like give me some LOL. The bowl came with a nice pretty large serving of miso soup, it's the classic type with a few chunks of tofu, wakame (seaweed), green onion and they use white miso (maybe more hawaii style here but i love it). Just this alone will bring me back for more, it was really good and hit the spot! read more

Quick eats but not really fast food for Japanese food. Like teriyaki style food. I like their kalbi. Well marinated and cooked so that the sugars in the marinate really caramelized. I've had kalbi where it looks like boiled meat... kind of gray.... the kalbi though isn't thick slices. Also tried their ladybug fried chicken. Simple batter, not so thick but the bite sizes are cooked well and not dry. It really reminds me when my grandma would fry chicken. All of the meats you can make it as a bowl, plate, combo with other meats or sushi (California or spicy tuna rolls). Really simple menu although there are plenty of items.
