I absolutely loved the bread we got here. The lady in the front waited patiently while my daughter took forever to pick. She ended up getting the mini chocolate roll and mini chocolate croissant. I got the mini pistachio roll and almond croissant. Those little rolls were amazing...I don't know if that's what they were actually called, but I regretted not getting more of the pistachio ones. It was buttery and had a little crispness to it...absolutely amazing. If you're in the area, stop by here. You won't regret it. The pastries were amazing! We loved the salted caramel eclair (not too sweet). The lemon tart was excellent. Suggestions: 1. Have more staff working otherwise the line gets longer and it gets kind of slow 2. Workers should also have to wear gloves when picking up pastries or use tongs. We stopped by the Barnyard on a rainy weekday afternoon, and stumbled on Lafayette Bakery just by accident. Ironically, the most authentic French bakery we've found is in the city of Lafayette in the East Bay, so the name made me curious if they were affiliated. We stopped by, but the server had no idea, but hey, we're here, let's get something. Wow. Like our local bakery, they use imported French butter, and the croissants tasted straight out of Paris! The acid test for me is a plain croissant - and it passed with flying colors: buttery soft and flavorful, not needing anything else. And the almond croissant - magnificent. Oh wow! This is the bakery you want to go to! We are visiting and stopped by here. I'm not usually a huge fan of sweet things especially in the morning but I ordered a pastry anyway and took down the whole thing. Came back the next day too and am bring home some of the amazing things we tried for the family. The Tropezienne is just heavenly. We must have come by on an off day... it was so terrible that I decided to write this review immediately after consuming... seemingly inedible food. To begin, I must say the cashier was a doll. She was very sweet. My partner ordered a latte which she made in under a minute which we thought was odd until we tasted it and then we understood. The latte tasted like burnt rubber. We then ordered a chocolate chip cookie and chocolate croissant. The cookie looked quite interesting, not sure why my partner picked it other than the fact that he was in the mood for a chocolate chip cookie. Needless to say the cookie was a 2/10. There are many was to make a chocolate chip cookie; normally I would say no one can screw up a chocolate chip cookie... except for Lafayette Bakery. I ordered the Chocolate Croissant. I shouldn't have. It was really dry and tasted days old. Quite concerned, frankly. Again, the cashier was kind. The options we're plentiful. The space was clean. read more

We stopped for sandwiches to take with us before heading out for a day of wine tasting. Between the four of us we ordered 6 sandwiches so we all had one and a half each. These little sandwiches which were only $4 each really hit the spot. They are simplistic but the baguettes and fixings were high quality. They do remind me of the sandwiches we've had in Europe. Stopped at this bakery during our honeymoon in Northern California a few times during our stay, and it did not disappoint. Quality, delicious items at reasonable prices, with good service. Some of the reviews mention poor service, based on our experience, it's the customers that can be the rude ones. One person in particular stormed in making absolutely no sense, yelling at the cashier and the other customers for taking too long. (It was literally less than 4 minutes of a wait) The cashier handled it well and even threw in a few free goodies for us for the trouble. It was no trouble at all! I guess I should be grateful, because one of those free goodies was a pistachio Macaron which is absolutely AMAZING! It's something I would have never ordered myself because macarons typically aren't my thing. But these Macarons are for sure my thing. Another mention-able, is the fact that we asked about the chocolate chip cookie and said what we like in our chocolate chip cookies... and the staff was kind enough to tell us that their chocolate chip cookies are not what we're looking for. Unlike the Lafayette Café at the Carmel by the Sea side where it is more of a full service place, this one at the Barnyard at Carmel Valley is more of a takeout place although there are a few seats on site if you choose to eat here. Since From Scratch had a one hour wait, we like many others waiting came by to Lafayette for a little something to hold us over. With a selection of quiches, mini baguette sandwiches, pastries, brioches, and other baked goods and desserts, there is bound to be something to tempt you. We split a prosciutto mini baguette to eat on site and a full baguette to go which I ended up replicating with prosciutto the next day. read more

Tried the chocolate Gaga (5 start), mini salami and Swiss sammie (delicious), chocolate cookie (OMG), chocolate Christmas loaf, orange vanilla (not a scone). My husband and I were in town visiting a friends restaurant a few weeks ago and noticed this cute bakery downstairs. Unfortunately, I went to check it out late Friday afternoon but they were closed! I guess I should've realized most bakeries close somewhat early. We decided to come back the next day in the morning to check it out. There was a short line, maybe around 5 people but it moved quickly. They have quite the variety of pastries (both savory and sweet), sandwiches, quiche's, etc. Everything was so pleasing to the eye and there were so many things I wanted to try! I ended up being good and just chose 2 chocolate croissants and 2 Prosciutto/cheese Focaccia breads. The chocolate croissants were only ok but the focaccia bread was extremely good! They ask you if you want it heated up but I opted to take it home and enjoy. The bread was so soft, tasty and highly addictive. I'm definitely coming back, specifically for this the next time we're in town. I'd recommend going early to grab what you want before they sell out. They do have a small outdoor patio with a few tables/chairs that you can enjoy your treats on. read more

We stopped here for a quick bite before our yoga class at a studio in The Barnyard. Lafayette is a french style bakery and cafe that offers beautiful patisseries, lots of different loaves, and an assortment of other pastries that I rarely see at other cafes. There was so much to choose from and I think they knew because they also had mini sizes of some of their other items so you could maybe squeeze in another sample if you were worried about being full. I ordered a raspberry snail (new to me!) and a latte. The latte came out steaming hot and was strong. It wasn't sweetened but they have sugar and honey for you to adjust the flavor. The snail was very flaky and the jam was good as well. I would kind of relate the pastry type to what a palmier is like. The ambiance of the cafe is a little rustic with its wood paneled walls and is very cozy. There is patio seating outside as well and you can look out onto the gardens at The Barnyard. Just a note that the wifi password that they have posted in the restaurant doesn't work. However there is wifi from neighboring establishments that you can get onto. read more

My sister and I went here one morning while visiting the area. My sister ordered a chocolate croissant and asked that it be heated. The answer was no, that they cant do that. I asked why and was told that it was because they are too busy to warm everything. I pointed out that they were not busy right then, we were the only customers in the store. So because my sister did not want it cold, she cancelled her order. I ordered a ham and cheese croissant and was asked if I wanted it heated? So at that point I wanted to confirm this ridiculous policy with a manager but was told that i was speaking to the owner. So it was the bakery owner who did not care to accommodate her customer's simple customer service request. We wish that we had gone somewhere else. We won't return. read more

Stumbled on this gem of a bakery and was pleasantly surprised at all the pastry selections. I ordered a coffee and a cherry tart (they had another name for it). I then asked if they could warm the tart briefly and girl behind the counter just gave me a blunt "no". "We don't do that" she said. WHAT? So I order something else that didn't need to be warm and started to leave when the guy behind me order a type of egg croissant....and as I walked by, I heard her (a different counter person) say, "do you want that heated?" WHAT? She couldn't be bothered to pop my tart into a micro for 15 seconds? Otherwise, I loved the ambiance, location, and selections. This place is an absolute gem. Incredible French pastries plus coffee/espresso drinks to pair. I had a napoleon (to die for) and hubby had a butter croissant (good) and a ham/cheese/egg sandwich (really delicious). Honestly, what I hate about this place is that we don't have it in San Francisco!!! Stepping into the shop, you can smell all the fresh pastries and sandwiches! The place offers outdoor sitting (not so sure) but definitely no chairs or tables inside, but it's okay because you can go for a little stroll after getting your goodies. Stopped by here in the morning after our stay in Carmel before heading to Andrew state park for a 10 mile hike. Was a perfect stop. Chocolate croissant and the mini prosciutto were perfect to Keep us fueled. Reminds me of my trip to France when we'd wake up and grab some in mornings before traveling. Didn't get to try to famous almond croissant because it ran out. Topped it off with a small latte. The area itself is a nice place to catch some food and beers or breakfast. We stopped here on our way home to San Francisco after a weekend away in Big Sur. It was the perfect breakfast spot for us - delicious, classic French pastries, great coffee, and we even got mini sandwiches to have as snacks on the road (I love that they had the classic boulangerie-style sandwiches you get in France!). This was the perfect sweet end to our weekend away and is going to be somewhere we return on our trips down the coast. Fast forward - we get home after our relaxing weekend, and my purse is nowhere to be found. I was so relaxed after our time in Big Sur that I left my purse (including my wallet, IDs, etc.) at the bakery. I panicked and tried calling but the bakery was already closed for the day. Early the next morning I got in touch with the staff and felt incredibly relieved that my bag had been located and put in a safe place. I explained that I was in San Francisco and it would be difficult for me to make the drive all the way back. I asked if someone could send me my bag if I paid for shipping. I also offered to pay for the person's time. The person I spoke with said she was happy to send me my bag. A few days later I got my bag back with everything intact and best of all, I didn't have to replace all of my cards and my license. I offered again to send a Venmo or check to cover the costs, but the staff refused, they were just happy to help. This customer service was above and beyond - other times I have lost things I have never seen them again. I am so grateful and relieved. Thank you again, Lafayette! I come here each and every day while staying in the Highlands in picking up a croissant, a baby ham and cheese baguette, or one of their incredible pastries! This bakery is simply fantastic. Every bite of their baked goods here is pure happiness. There is always a line, which gives me a chance to decide what new thing I want to try for the day or stick with something I loved from before. Choices & Decision! Friendly is the staff. In the mornings, so fun it is to watch the bakers putting in and bringing out their breads from the oven. And, it smells so good there!
