Ayyy, Lalo, Lalo, Lalo... I don't get out to that end of the county often. However, when I do I try and enjoy a meal at different eateries and Lalo's was on the bucket list so I dipped in for an adventurous moment... Young lady at the order window was pleasant & nice, but when asked to make "chilaquiles" she said we don't make those. I jokingly asked ifit be possible to have the cook make an exception and toss these ingredients together--bring that they are already in use in the kitchen and in the menu. She said "nope" even without actually asking the cook. Like, c'mon! Really?! Oh, my word! I should've known something was "unique" right then and there. Ordered, but menu was "traditional" not the true home cooked type meals like the soups, sopas & moles I was expecting from a Mexican restaurant. The curbside walk-up is nostalgic and cute. Then darn it, my experience went down hill from there... After we ordered, we indoors. Mind you, the indoor d sounroom tupe area is NOT big at all; a few booths & free tables. Staff supervising the chip/salsa station didn't seem to notice when our group walked in through the single door and past her station. Like, how could you miss us? Didn't come help us clean the table (and booth cushions) that was sticky & dirty. Don't mind brushing off some crumbs, but this was gross! Still, no notice from staff that we moved to a different booth. Even after the move, staff didn't greet us nor provide us with the complimentary chips and salsa like everyone one else was receiving?! Hmm, maybe Staff was too busy chatting it up with kitchen staff to notice. Moving on... Got settled and received our food. We asked for the complimentary chips and salsa which was not the best quality do not having received the greeting norm of the chips & salsa wasn't a loss in the least... Moving forward, the ham & cheese melt was far from quality! It was less than basic; white bread & low grade meats, the fries were...eh. The flavorless ropa vieja seemed to have been prepared with a pre-cooked scrambled egg and just tossed into the meat mix. The chicken taquitos were middle of the road, as well. Had an horchata and it tasted like a fountain drink concoction. How is it possible to mess up a ham & cheese melt as it want even melted, but the bread was slightly toasted? All in all, I experienced the adventure and that's what it was. Nothing to marvel at, nothing to write home about, nothing that'll will lure me & mine back for another visit. Lalo's has good simple mexican food served quickly without spending too much money. We sometimes come down from the mountain off Hwy 33 and get a lot of food and take it back to the worksite. Boxes of tacos, boxes of burritos, we use this place to feed us and sometimes our customers and other contractors. The street tacos are excellent, I enjoy the asada and pastor the most. Burritos so far have been either chorizo breakfast burritos or carne asada. We always get the food to go. Tacos very good but eat them soon. The burritos keep pretty good if you need something for later. The salsas are flavorful and they do not mind sharing. This is a good place to eat and they do not take too long to make the food. read more

So I'm writing because I'm pissed off about today's experience; however these feeling have been growing for awhile. Tonight I ordered a carne asada burrito and a 16oz guac. All I got was a burrito and a bag of stale chips. I spent $25 on a burrito? You guys forgot my guac! Sure that sucks and it's frustrating, but they are soooo over priced. This will probably be my last time coming here. $16 for a basic burrito is dumb. With all the other options on the avenue, I'll be taking my business elsewhere. This place slaps. Especially their breakfast burritos! Food was definitely fresh and hot because I burned my mouth on a asada breakfast burrito. The pork breakfast burrito was also awesome. Also, because I couldn't resist I got a churro and a slice of flan for breakfast. Churro was good and the flan was a bit stiff but still good. Tried this place for the first time two days ago. No up charge for lengua or beef tongue. Most places want an extra dollar or dollar fifty on anything lengua. Driving by first impressions ... The place looked bright and well kept outside... That implied there was some hope the inside would be clean and bright. No guarantee of course but you got to figure if the outside looks run down and filthy then what are the odds the inside is similarly run down and filthy? So actually drove by, stopped looking from inside my car... Then I drove off without getting out. I was cruising through the neighborhood looking around for the first time. When I turned around and drove back and past I found myself thinking this looked like one of the nicer places in this little spot of town. I pulled over and reflected on where I wanted to get a snack... Then I turned around and pulled into their parking lot. I was still skeptical walking up. I stood back looking over the menu on the wall. Then I started looking at the other customers seated... In particular I was looking at thier food. It looked good. then I leaned in looking through the ordering and pick up Windows... I was looking at the kitchen. No cockroaches seen or rodents... (Just joking). Seriously... It looked professional. At about that moment I watched as somebody received their tacos. I was impressed that it was a paper plate of three tacos with a over wrap of clear cellophane. That struck me as unusual? Being sneaky I followed that customer and watched him sit down and begin eating. I asked them briefly how the tacos were because they looked really good. It was like $3 per taco or 850 for three. I decided the cellophane was indeed a sanitary gesture as well as helpful to avoid loss of anything from being bumped or not carrying it level. So what about my burrito? At first I thought it looked just a little bit small. The funny thing is my wife was sharing it with me... She remarked that it looked good sized? So how's the taste? My wife thought it tasted pretty good... She actually ate more than half before I started. Generally speaking I was okay with focused attention on how flavorful the lengua was or was not. I guess I would grade it slightly above average. So why four stars? In my opinion there's no shame for a place to get three stars from me. That's like having a sober solid competent rating. I wouldn't want to give five stars unless it was deserving of being just out of this world the best. It's not here at Lala's. Of all the places I drove by with superficial evaluation from the street this place is definitely for stars by appearance only. Although my personal opinion of the cuisine is closer to three stars my wife indicated it's closer to four. I suspect hunger played a hand in tilting her scale of opinion. It's really not bad but I have had better. So for the area and overall I had to choose between three and four stars and three would have been a bit of an injustice. Four stars is probably slightly overrated. Four stars are awarded as a courtesy. read more

I pass through twice a week in the mornings on my way to Ojai and have to stop for a breakfast burrito. It's always fresh, hot and they are always happy to customize it for me! Breakfast burrito with chorizo, rice instead of potatoes (potatoes don't like me!) and added cilantro, onions and red sauce. Best ever! read more

Nice people. Clean setting outside, no garbage left on tables or flying around the yard as some outside establishments have. I ordered tostada con pulpa (octopus) and medium mixed seafood cocktail. It was so good. The shrimp was cleaned very well, which is always a concern of mine. The fifth star is lacking because chips were not fresh and the habanero salsa was very bland and watered down. The place was steadily busy and the staff came around regularly to see if we needed anything. I thought the basket of crackers, tapatio, salt, lime and chips was a sweet treat for us. I'll be back. Visiting Ventura and there is so much Mexican food! We saw this spot as we were driving down from ojai and had to give it a try. We ordered quite a bit and I'd say we were fairly mixed on this spot. We each ordered a shrimp ceviche on a tostada. Amazing. Shrimp was fresh and tasted great. Avocado was very generous. We would for sure try more seafood here. I also ordered a potato taco and it was ok. Less greasy than most I've tried. Also sampled the chicken enchilada plate with rice and beans. It wasn't my favorite. I just wasn't a fan of the red sauce and cheese wasn't melted. Was not served very hot. Rice I prefer it to be light and fluffy. This was a bit more of a wetter rice and beans didn't have a lot of flavor. My fiancé ordered the chili verde and was expecting more flavor and spice as well. So it was the ceviche that made the meal and if in the area we would try out another seafood entree. The menu is quite extensive! Also no beer here but plenty of drinks to choose from. Ordered a Cóctel de Camarón on Friday 7/26/24 for pick up and my husband ate the left overs today 7/29/24 he found a fish hook on one of the shrimp WTH...HOW COULD THAT OF BEEN IN THERE!!!! He didn't realize until he chewed on the shrimp suddenly felt the pain. Called restaurant asked to speak to the owner or manager and the girl who answered would not give me the managers name instead she said to txt her a picture of the "hook" so she can show the manager so they can see exactly what was found. I wish I could give a 3 and a half. It's really not that I dislike Lalo's or that anything stands out as demotion quality, but more just the occasional aftertaste of the food. Depending what time you go, it can be hard to find parking since they share a quasi lot with a tiny car wash and the other side is on a neighborhood street that is often busy and crowded with cars. Everything is simple when you get there to order. Stand in line, order accordingly, either take out or get a seat and they'll bring your food to you. I would say the breakfast burrito is my favorite. I love their food it's always good. They're chicken is amazing, highly recommended for burritos or tacos! I ate there tonight and had a pastor wet burrito. It was ok, they're pastor wasn't as good as I expected but it was good. I did find a good two inch piece of metal in the food. I was chewing and it hurt my tooth, and I pulled out a long staple looking piece of metal. It's never happened before, but I called five times to warn them and had no answer. Wow!! Just look at the menu, it is HUGE! As is the portions. Only go here if you're extremely hungry, if you want to share a plate, or you're taking home leftovers. A good sign is a PACKED HOUSE and that it is. A Sunday afternoon at 4:30 and many of the tables were full on the patio and inside the little café. The young women taking our order and serving us were extremely sweet. Lots of smiles. The food is delicious and very authentic. For two years of living in Ventura we finally had a chance to stop. My kids and I love this place! There is another Lalo's closer to me but this is by far the best one. I love the aguachiles, if you don't like spice get mild. I love spice and stick to medium. My kids love their burritos. We've had the horchata, fish tacos, ceviche and a few other things on the menu and none of them disappoint. The price is good. I always have loved their chili relleno dinner. Since 2020 since they are close by I've been trying other items they have. So far everything is really good but my new fav hands down is their ceviche tostada. Just a tostada shell piled high with fish and topped with a generous portion of fresh sliced avocado. And a lime.
