Sure enough, the portion of oxtail was so generous and the broth was rich and tasty, packed with shiitake mushroom, peanut and not to forget the cilantro. I know this may sound dumb, but eating oxtail soup in Downtown Las Vegas was on my Must-Do List while my husband and I were vacationing there during Thanksgiving weekend because all my family and friends who traveled to Vegas from Hawaii always said they do this whenever they fly up there, especially at the Cal. I told my friend who moved from Hawaii to Vegas that I wanted to try the oxtail soup at the Cal and he said don't and just go to the Fremont to try their oxtail soup. At first I was like, what... freals? But my friend wouldn't steer me wrong so I listened to him and my husband and I made it to the Lanai Express at the Fremont. And he was right. That oxtail soup tasted just like home, like "The Alley Restaurant at Aiea Bowl" good (but not better because it didn't come with their delicious ponzu sauce). I don't know what was wrong with me, but I couldn't finish my bowl. I ate all the meat I could and didn't finish the soup and the rice. One star docked because it's a small restaurant section in the casino and while I luckily saved a table for us, my husband said the lady at the counter taking our order wasn't a very good listener and made my husband have to repeat himself with our order. Ordered the orange chicken and 2 bites into eating it I decided I couldn't eat it, rice was all hard and orange chicken had no more chicken inside. No big deal, I went back up to the counter and simply just asked for a refund. After waiting 15 to 20 minutes for a manager to come and give me a refund she finally shows up and could not find my order even though I paid with a card. The lady by the name of Theresa, was absolutely terrible and felt the need to speak for every single person around before they could even think or talk, she was just down right rude and possibly was under the influence of drugs. This place is a small food court inside Fremont Hotel and Casino. I was too exhausted to walk to California Hotel for their popular oxtail soup as part of their graveyard special. I've landed here instead since it's been a few years I've had their oxtail soup. I received my order almost instantly since there was no line going into midnight. The soup was served in a medium sized disposable bowl with a scoop of rice on the side. I was impressed that there were ample portion of oxtail meat (big and small) with lots of cilantro and portobello mushrooms. The meat was surprisingly very tender but were not falling of the bones which I like. The broth was really good and not too greasy or salty, but having lots of portobello mushrooms does change the flavor of the oxtail soup due to the woodsy flavor from the mushrooms. The only downfall with this meal to me, the bowl was not the right size to enjoy this meal. I had to put some of the meat to the side to give more room for my spoon to move around. The soup was warm and not hot and that shouldn't matter what time of day someone would be dining in. This soup can use more broth and that would be greatly appreciated. Yes, I still prefer the oxtail soup at the Market Street Cafe inside California Hotel, but this does the job as an alternative. If they just pay attention to the small details, this would be a delicious soup to savor and I may go out of my way to dine in frequently when I find myself at Fremont Street Experience with all the interesting crowd around. read more

I saw the oxtail soup from the Yelpers and I had to go get some especially since I'm just across the way. I was highly satisfied with the soup, the broth is very flavorful and the oxtail is so tender that it falls off. The broth reminds me of the pho broth. The employees were very helpful and generous with the portions. Let's just say that the employees hooked it up. THANKS! I LOVE chinese food but this place isn't it. I've never had orange chicken taste the way it does here anywhere else and that's not a good thing. It tasted old, chewy, and the flavor was just off. They were understaffed, the line wasn't too bad but the wait for our food was extremely long, especially for our French fries. They also make burgers and stuff so I ordered a side of fries with cheese sauce. They didn't do that, the best they could do was fries throw shredded cheese on top and microwave it. Took 20 minutes for the fries to be ready and when I got them they were sad, soft, and lacked salt. This could be a great place if they put in some effort but they don't have much of a selection, and the staff didn't really care much about anything. I wasn't expecting much being a Chinese hole in the wall, but if you can't even make orange chicken right, they should really change things up or let someone else take the space who can bring in more people and do a better job. There was a huge line at dunking donuts across the way who served sandwiches. I regretted not going that route due to the poor service and food quality we received here. If a donut shop can make decent sandwiches, clearly a Chinese joint can make Chinese taste better than it did. Wouldn't recommend to my worst enemies. read more

After attending the second day of LIB (Life if Beautiful festival) we were starving the three of us didn't quite know what to eat since almost every restaurant on Fremont Street was either packed to the walls or there was a long wait to get a table. On the suggestion of Minh's finding, we decided to try this joint out. Walking through Fremont Hotel, you really get to see just what kind of people downtown Vegas attracts after midnight (bleh). We arrived at our dinner destination. A) It was not to busy. B) there were a lot of seniors, local folks and some sketchy people either in line to order or already seated and enjoying a hearty meal of congealed slop. We looked over the menu and then at the hot plates of hopefully editable food. Prices are definitely budget friendly. After saying a quick prayer to the food gods, we grabbed a table then got in line to place our order! The lady behind the counter reminded me of an ex cafeteria worker as it was her business to get the order and slop whatever it was onto a plate then send you on your way to the cashier! Taking my chances, I ordered Orange Chicken and some Eggrolls. She handed me my plate and said you can pay at the register. The orange chicken had a funny taste (as it was old or reheated) the sauce was super thick and sticky. I still ate it and was sort full after six big pieces. Now the eggrolls looked pretty inviting but sadly, they fell short of taste. To me the roll tasted like an old shoe mixed with off brand spices. People of yelp, whatever you do... do not get the sauce! The only thing I can report about our little adventure is that the three of us did not get food poisoning!
