Larkin Restaurant is such a hidden gem and more people need to know about it because this restaurant needs to stay in business forever. Larkin probably has San Francisco's best Hu Tieu Nam Vang. I brave driving across the city to the Tenderloin just for a bowl of their noodles. Their hu tieu comes topped with chicken, pork, shrimp, quail eggs, pork liver, and crispy fried pork lard/skin, garnished with green onions, onions, cilantro, Chinese celery and chrysanthemum greens, in the most flavorful broth. I had the hu tieu nam vang recently and it's one of the better bowls of this dish that I've had in SF. I unfortunately didn't have a chance to eat here but wanted to leave this review because they showed a lot of grace and kindness to me today (two attributes that I think make a good basis for cooking good food). I was stuck in an unfortunate situation that my Uber dropped me off in the wrong location due to an address change for the establishment I was visiting. Some men outside were making me feel quite unsafe and I was looking for a safe place inside to wait for my 2nd Uber. This place is dirty when I was there, un-friendly staff. I was joining "food relief" program that I should pick up meal at this place. The address is correct 607 Larkin st, the name of restaurant also correct. When I came in to pick up food, the guy there with nasty look at me said "Wrong address, you should go to 637 Larkin st". We really like dining at Larkin Restaurant! They have a small focussed menu with the most popular pho combinations and a few surprises; dishes you can't get anywhere else in the area. So I stopped in and picked up a basic noodle dish with grilled chicken to-go and was super happy with the tasty flavoring and portion. The indoor dining space looks nice and bright, it's got a good chi flow for whenever Newsome allows indoor dining again. They also have a Chinese food menu with more veg options which I'll try next time. But if there were more Vietnamese vegetarian options I'd be back way more often (i.e. veggie rolls and sides, maybe sub meat for lion's mane or mataki mushrooms (sold at farmers market btw) in pho?
