I ordered the albondigas. It was not good. The sauce was more like a red chile sauce. It had so many pieces of dried chile pod and seeds i had to dump it out. The meatballs were soft but i paid over $17 for a small bowl. 4 meatballs a piece of carrot and a chunk of potato and many many chile pod pieces and seeds. I asked for corn tortilla and got a flour tortilla. I cannot have flour so that was a miss. Definitely not worth the price. I may try other foods but not the albondigas. read more

I wasn't sure at first since I hadn't heard much about the place but once I got there the staff was quick to greet and seat me which was nice and they did it with a good attitude too which already gave me a positive feeling the menu had a solid variety without being too much and when the food came out I was honestly surprised how fresh everything tasted you could tell ingredients were good quality and prepared with some attention to detail the flavor combos weren't too crazy just balanced and satisfying one of the dishes had a rich savory part with just a touch of sweetness that worked way better than I expected and everything felt warm and cooked right not rushed or left sitting too long what stood out the most though was how the staff carried themselves they were calm helpful and never made us feel like we were asking too much even when we asked for a couple small changes they just handled it no drama no sighing and that kind of attitude makes a big difference in wanting to come back read more

I take no joy in saying this, especially because there is a pandemic and I am all about supporting local businesses. However, I have to be real with my experience. I wanted to be adventurous and try a new spot I don't usually go to, but I had to choose the one place that couldn't even meet decency. I placed an order for my family including a Chile relleno a la carte, beef enchiladas, wet chicken burrito and a side of guacamole. I was so disappointed by the side of guac. First of all, I was horrified by how much they skimped on me. It's $4.50 for the side, and Las Cazuelas couldn't even fill the entire container. I would never have this issue any other place. Although the guacamole tasted freshly made, it was so bland. It neither had spiciness nor salt. I had to mix in my own sea salt to give it some semblance of flavor. My boyfriend's beef enchilada plate looked absolutely unappetizing. Straight up, the refried beans were gray in color. Who wants to eat gray food? Also the beans were runny. The red enchilada sauce tasted really bitter to me like it was burnt. I didn't have the filling, but my boyfriend said they used ground beef, which he was very disappointed by. He was expecting to get shredded beef, which is what other Mexican restaurants typically use instead. Thankfully my Chile relleno was fine. I, too, had a red sauce over the Chile relleno, but it was nothing like the enchilada red sauce. It was more of a tomato based sauce, and it was very flavorful. This is place has been mostly fantastic during COVID-19. They have a large patio and tons of space, the food is good and fast, and they have good cocktails. Also they are on Doordash.com, and do take out too. The Mexican breakfast options like the verde chilaquiles, or Huevos a la Mexicana are worth a visit alone, so good! The cucumber aqua fresca, the "aqua loca" (sparkling water with lemon and salt), the margaritas - all good! My only qualm is the service, sometimes the service is outstanding and other times the waitstaff has a poor attitude and wears their face mask not fully covering their nose, which is stupid AF. I am not happy with this place. First, the wait was about 40 minutes, once we got seated I went to go get food for my babies. It was not good, the enchiladas were just placed on the food tray and nothing was hot, the tortillas were still raw cheese inside the enchilada was still cold & hard. The seats were outside it was freezing n caused food to get extra cold, the tables outside were basic patio tables no stability the food fell thru them n got my shoes dirty! Almost a 5 but one of the egg wasn't adding yolk-porn to my meal. It was overcooked but the 2nd one delivered yolk goodness. We had Mexican at lunch but we were both in the mood for Mexican that evening so what did I do? I checked Yelp to see which place I haven't been to, called, ordered, and conquered! I just decided to give them a 5 because Gavin enjoyed his burrito so much and I loved both my chilaquiles and enchiladas. Since this shelter-in-place started I have developed weird eating habits. Sometimes I won't have anything in my stomach all day and sometimes I don't eat meat (red, poultry, and seafood). I'll stick to tofu or plant-based products like the fake chorizo (it's good!). Sandwiched between two other Mexican restaurants (Eduardo and another I haven't been to), this place still manages to hold its own against all other Mexican places in the area! Plus, they're still open during COVID-19, so they have that going for them. First and foremost, they're a little more pricey than Eduardos, but they make up for it by giving absolutely massive portions. In order to support our local businesses/our fatness, we ordered a carnitas place, a nopales de puerco plate, 3 tacos al pastor, 3 carne asada tacos, and an order of their pozole. In their places you get a TON of food, in addition to some amazing handmade corn tortillas, so you can't sleep on that. Their tacos were very good - the al pastor was served in huge chunks with a good amount of char, and the carne asada was flavored very well, although wasn't as good as the al pastor. One thing about this place is: BEWARE the salsas! Their orange sauce is "real" orange sauce, made with a ton of habaneros and is spicy, their salsa verde is spicy, and they have this dark red spicy sauce that's mostly oil that is EXTREMELY spicy! I'm a spice fiend and I could only take a couple drops of their dark red oil spicy sauce, although it did add a whole ton of delicious umami flavor. This place is a solid taqueria that also sells a bunch of other great food items. If you're craving some reliable takeout, give them a try. --- sweet: delicious al pastor, great serving sizes bitter: food was a bit greasy (but not nearly as much as Eduardo's, to be honest) but SO worth it. read more

After a full day of drinking mimosas in celebration of my best friend, we woke up wanting some food to help us with the *slight* hangover before driving back home. Our friends quickly suggested las cazuelas, they order from here regularly. We were sat down outside because we had a dog with us. The patio is really nice, with umbrellas providing shade. Felt like ordering green ones that morning, and decided to try their cafe de olla. I am not a coffee drinker but if I see cafe de olla on the menu, I will order it! Just takes me back to the delicious coffee I've had in Mexico. My best friend ordered the red chilaquiles with scrambled eggs and horchata, her husband ordered pozole, and I can't remember what my husband got, chile colorado I think, with an horchata. They brought some chips and salsa before taking our order, great crispy chips and a tasty salsa. No one was impressed with the horchata- very watered down that day. I wasn't a fan of the cafe either, but was not gonna let it go to waste. I did really like the green chilaquiles. Did not try the red ones but in my opinion mine looked a lot more appetizing. My friend liked his pozole and my husband also liked his chile colorado. He asked for salsa, and got this habanero one that was way too spicy for my liking. The woman that took our order wasn't very friendly. She was wearing her mask so from what I could tell she was in her late teens/early 20s. My friend would speak to her in Spanish and she would only respond in English. Maybe she didn't feel comfortable, just something we were thrown off by a bit. The woman who brought us our food was the complete opposite, very friendly and asked us a few times how we were doing. Overall, I liked the food and location. I found the chicken and carnitas to be more on the bland side... these go on the recommendation list for less intrepid taqueria-goers and tummy ache survivors. Jazz things up by requesting a bottle of orange sauce, which they don't provide unless asked. It'll add a kiss of heat. I've had better free chips and salsa, but I guess free is the key word here. Horchata was excellent. Service is very friendly, though I suspect the presence of a darling chihuahua in our party may have contributed to this. June 11, 2023 and we stopped in for an early dinner. Pleasant and attentive staff, lots of outdoor seating with huge umbrellas. Indoor seating is available too. The outdoor area was spotlessly clean. The chicken enchiladas with the moly sauce were very good as were the carnitas. The rice was on the bland side. The beans were tasty and had plenty of cheese on top. Went here several times & feel that now I can post an honest review... My first visit was fairly good. I enjoyed their chips & salsa and my enchilada platter was decent. I'm not used to the taste of the darker sauce (other places it's more of a brighter red) but it wasn't bad. What I did notice was that service was SLOW. We had to ask for everything...refills, to go boxes, check. My second visit...ordered the enchiladas again & the food was about the same but this time I ordered an Horchata. The server brought me a glass of 1/2 horchata & 1/2 foam that was dispensed from their machine when you run out of the liquidy stuff. I asked for a new one that was actually a full glass of drinkable Horchata & she huffed, grabbed my drink quickly & walked off. Okay??? My third visit, I ordered my go to enchilada platter again. This time their red sauce was extremely spicy. It was never spicy in the past. I mentioned this, to whom I think was the owner working the counter, and her response with attitude was "Well, what do you want me to do???" . I was a little taken aback by her response & demeanor. She then says "I'll put tomato sauce on it for you." I say ok figuring that's my only option. A new plate is brought out & the tomato sauce was like a light marinara sauce poured onto the enchiladas. It was awful. It made the corn tortillas so soggy that it was inedible. POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE & disappointing quality of food. There's a million better Mexican places to enjoy. We arrived at the place around 7pm, and here's a review of what happened after: Pro's: - Decent sized parking lot + street parking - Indoor + outdoor seating (outdoor seating is huge, with eclectic tables) - Complimentary salsa bar + chips - Decent options on the menu - good customer service - free margarita with yelp check-in - Good serving size Cons: - The food was bland... like, very bland. From the chicken fajita platter, to the burrito, to the nachos, it lacked the kick we all expect from Mexican food. Everything seemed prepared fresh, but the lack of spice was a bummer. The salsa bar was a big help, but I still didn't feel like getting my leftovers to-go. Now, that being said, I'm confused how to rate my experience. The taste of the food we order is the highlight of our reviews on here, and is my reasoning for the 3 stars I guess i need to leave this eatery in my bookmarks, and give them another try for an updated review. Las Cazuelas is a cute, small restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating options. We've been semi-regular visitors the past 3 years we've lived in San Jose -- the food and staff are really consistent. Food: 4.5/5 I appreciate the wide array of options on the menu. My favorite being the Chile Verde; my partner's being the Chimichanga. The Chile Verde is always flavorful and the pork tender. The Chimichanga similarly has good taste and the fry job is almost always a perfect golden brown. I recommend trying the Chile Verde and Horchata! Service: 4/5 Overall the staff and service here is very kind and friendly. Las Cazuelas has signs stating they are low staffed and to be patient with them as they work to serve all the customers. This is very evident; we're seated directly and unless we know what we want to order as we're being seated, it may take some time to have a server come back to the table. This is not an issue for us, but may be problematic if running low on time. read more

Came here on the first morning of Thanksgiving break, and was happy to see the free margarita with check in offer! What a great way to start a vacation. I'm not even really a fan of margaritas, but this one was sweet and tasty, and I'd definitely order one again. My date went with the classic huevos rancheros, but I wanted to try the huevos divorciados so I could taste both salsas. The salsas were great and flavorful, but the breakfast was pretty average otherwise. The rice and beans weren't over cooked, so that's all I really ask for at a no-frills breakfast joint. Prices are reasonable, and the ambiance is quite nice (it's near the Alameda). The employees were kind and attentive, so the experience was delightful overall.
