Slow and quiet Tuesday evening. Walked up and was allowed to choose my own table. I chose an outdoor seating and the waiter placed the menus down and asked for my drink choice. I asked for water and when he came back, got a michelada. Both came out pretty promptly and the michelada was yum. He also brought out a basket of chips and two salsa dips. The salsa has a kick to it. Yumm! I ordered a burrito which was alright. They don't do margaritas but the Paloma was good. Would def come back. The GOOD: Our server Eduardo was so friendly and provided good service. The chips were served warm and the beer was cold and served in frosted glasses. The BAD: The food WAS NOT GOOD. We ordered a variety of tacos and burritos. Everything was flavorless, bland and dry. Carne asada tasted as if it had been sitting around for days. No juice, no seasoning, poor quality meat with horrible texture. Carnitas was flavorless but did have a good texture. Probably was fresher than the Asada Crispy taco shell was greasy. Came here recently because a friend was in town and I know she loves Mexican food. Decided to bring her here since they had outdoor seating and she just got a new pup yorkie she couldn't leave home. I thought this would be better than it was. I've always had good experiences here but this day the food was nothing special for some enchilada plates. Ordered lunch from Puerto Azul today via DoorDash. I live close by, so my food arrived quickly and was still hot. The enchilada suizas were excellent! I love the cheese and sauce, it tastes so good. I requested no beans, so they gave me extra rice instead. Very nice! I was surprised by the beef tamale. It was covered in spicy red sauce and melted cheese. Didn't care for it at all. I was expecting a plain tamale with nothing on it. I've been ordering different types of enchiladas from Puerto Azul for about a year and they always taste good. I had to give a shoutout to Eduardo at Puerto Azul. He made our experience so much better! From the moment we sat down, he was super friendly and made us feel welcome. He knew the menu inside and out and gave us some awesome recommendations that were spot on. What really stood out though was how genuine he was. It felt like he actually cared about us having a great meal, not just rushing through things. He checked in just enough without being overbearing, and he had a great vibe the whole time. A few days ago I got a seafood mocajete the crab leg meat was so dry, it was shredding when I scrapped it out definitely over cooked. They filled it with imitation crab. On the menu is said scallops and octopus but I didn't get ANY scallops and the octopus were the ends of POSSIBLY squid. There was no octopus on there. I was VERY disappointed read more

In town for meetings and met up with colleagues to have lunch together. Located in the Willow Glen area off Lincoln Avenue, it was easy to find and parking is available in the lot. Service was attentive and portions are quite large so bring an appetite. The horchata was very good and the shrimp enchilada was really good. I've had a disappointing experience as a long-time customer who has been supporting the owners of Puerto Azul Restaurant for years. I decided to return after several years, and to my surprise, I ended up paying $44.00 for a Molcajete Puerto Azul #11, which is listed on the menu for $28.00. The owner's explanation was that I had ordered the shrimp version, but I explained that I specifically told him I didn't want shrimp, only chicken and beef. His excuse was that since the shrimp version costs the same, he would charge me the same price. I told him I had no problem paying, but he should be clearer about prices and honest with long-time customers who support his business. I genuinely wish Puerto Azul all the best, but my family and I will never spend another dime there. To make matters worse, the Molcajete didn't taste as good as it used to several years ago. read more

IMHO Haven't been here in four years and I'm so glad I made it back! Our first restaurant choice didn't open for lunch (new pandemic hours) so we yelped other Willow Glen options. My friend had always driven by Puerto Azul and noticed how busy and lively it seemed. This piqued her interest, so this was her chance to try it out! I ordered the Enchiladas Regulares, $14.99, two enchiladas filled with my choice of beef, chicken or cheese, (always cheese for me!) and served with rice, beans, and a little bit of green salad. My friend ordered a la carte; two beef flautas, $6.99, and one mole chicken enchilada, $6.99. Plates came out piping hot! In my first review 4 years ago, I complained that my plate and food came out warm. Not today! And not only was my food beautiful to behold, but it was oh-so-tasty and delicious from the very first bite! The chips were freshly fried and crispy and the salsa hot and spicy! We Door dashed this place today, and ordered the Taco Salad w/ ground beef, Enchiladas Suizas and the Quesadilla Puerto Azul (Shrimp Quesadilla). The Shrimp quesadilla was delicious. I was slightly wary as shrimp in quesadillas & enchiladas are hit or miss for me. This was great and the shrimp was good, not fishy. I'm a huge quesadilla fan, it's always one of my go-to items to order. Bonus as this came with the fixings (sour cream, guacamole, chopped tomatoes, lettuce & green sauce. Yum! The Taco salad with ground beef was also very good, one of the best I've had. Another one of my go-to items. It has a sauce in it as well which really upped the taste factor. I had a bite of the enchiladas suizas which was tasty as well. It was a little disappointing that they were so flat...didn't seem to have a lot of filling. But the sauce they were in was very good. Later I found out they were cheese enchiladas, not chicken as the menu stated. That accounted for the "flat". Our server was super nice, he was the one who recommended the Mole Malcajete & reassured my boyfriend (who is Mexican & very picky about his Mole) that he wouldn't be disappointed, & he wasn't! We all got Palomas to drink & the alcohol to juice ratio was perfect. On that particular day it was cold & rainy in San Jose, the restaurant had all the windows & front door open & it made the restaurant very cold. Unfortunately I don't have photos of food but I wanted to share my thoughts on this restaurant as my family just hosted a large group lunch for an after funeral service. We worked with Eddie who arranged for us to be seated outside in a sectioned off area. The staff was amazing - literally brining every table (at least 8) chips, salsa, refills , drinks so timely. They were extremely hospitable, friendly and timely. We had two options for food plates which was carnitas or Chile verde with rice and beans. I had carnitas and they were very good. Super fresh flour tortillas too. I had a michelada (with shrimp) - very good too. We may have found our go to restaurant when we want Mexican as this place was on point. So yesterday me and my family ate at this restaurant and we have ate here before so we thought this time was going to be the same because they always have great customer service and the food is usually pretty up to par, but yesterday the server looked a little irritated serving us mind you it was only 3 adults 2 kids so it wasn't a huge table. He didn't want to venture out so we stayed local. I have never been here but he has told me that this place is pretty good. He used to live in Willow Glen many moons ago. Anyway. We were seated almost right away and I felt instantly welcomed. Huge menu. Lots of variety. I wanted everything. He ordered the enchiladas and burrito combo plate and a Modelo whilst I ordered the Enchiladas Mexicana plate and an iced water. I chose chicken. I forgot what he picked. He was enjoying the complimentary chips and salsa whilst we talked about everything... from work to our kids to the NBA finals that is coming up. Our food came out very fast.. we started to enjoy our food. My entree was delicious... fluffy rice, delicious retried beans, fresh cheese, and tasty enchiladas. I didn't clear my plate as I normally would. It is because I still watch what I eat... that was my first regular Mexican dish in so long...
