Las Micheladas, while technically located in Ocala, is really up the road from Ocala in Bitchton... but they don't have a post office, so Ocala it is. Sitting on US27 halfway between Ocala and Williston, the restaurant sits on the Southwest side of the road. If you are heading Northwest on US27, it is a bit of a pain to get to as there is no access across the dual carriageway, and you have to go up the road a quarter mile to do a U-Turn. Same goes for leaving the place to continue heading Northwest. Once you are in the parking lot, be on the lookout for cats. There is at least one that hangs around, so please don't run them over! Also, on the north side of the parking lot is some dirt parking, but beware of that if it has rained recently. I saw a truck almost get stuck in there trying to get out. There is a front porch with a number of tables and chairs, so outdoor seating is available. I took full advantage of it this weekend as it was a gorgeous day out. Inside is seating as well, obviously. Looking over the menu, they have an extensive list of items. I went for the quesadilla which comes with rice, beans, and salsa, and also a burrito. Chips and salsa are also served when you get your drinks. The quesadilla I had was decent. I am not sure which cheese they used in it, but it seemed thicker than the Mexican cheese I am accustomed to seeing on quesadillas from restaurants like this. It seemed almost to be a Monterey Jack. It was still tasty, mind you, but the cheese in it seemed a bit thick. Next up was the burrito. Here, I made a mistake... not in ordering too much food (I knew it was too much food, and it would be going home in a doggy bag) but in ordering it wet, which means it comes with a red tomato based sauce and cheese. The cheese was fine, but the red sauce... oh dear... it needs work. A lot of work. It was basically just straight tomato sauce out of a can. No seasoning, no modification to change it from the droll canned stuff to something unique and enjoyable, just... blech. The burrito itself was good, mind you, but with this sauce on it it became something that was just not palatable. I packed it away in a styrofoam container, scraping as much of the sauce off of it as possible, and hopefully when I tackle it at home I will be able to eliminate that sauce properly. The prices are right for the amount of food you get, I will say. There just seem to be some things that you may want to avoid.

After passing only fast food venues coming down US27 for 5 hours, it was amazing to see a sit down dining option that looked inviting.

The parking lot can get a little hectic, especially during busy hours, but once I got inside everything moved quickly. The service was fast and I really appreciated that everything is fried fresh to order, you can taste the difference. I got the wings and shrimp combo and added hush puppies. The wing batter was amazing: not greasy, perfectly seasoned, and honestly better than Popeyes or even KFC. A lot of places give you more batter than chicken, but here the chicken was moist and a good portion. The hush puppies were also surprisingly moist and flavorful, some of the best I've had since they're usually dry elsewhere. My find and I split the order and since we eat small portion we think that was a good portion for us and also had leftovers. Everything was so good I didn't even need sauce, and I'm a sauce girl through and through. Overall, great experience and I'd definitely come back when I'm craving something fresh, crispy, and satisfying.

Gainesville Seafood, out on the Eastern end of town, is that place. It may not be the easiest spot to stumble upon, but that's part of its charm. This is the kind of hidden gem that loyal regulars keep quietly to themselves, the sort of place that feels like a reward for those willing to seek it out. The atmosphere is relaxed and unpretentious, the kind of no-frills setting that lets the food do all the talking. I went for a seafood platter, which was shrimp and fish with fries. They have a variety of different kinds of fish available that you can pick from, which is a nice touch. It gives the meal a sense of personalization that you don't always find at casual seafood spots. I went with the flounder, and it turned out to be an easy choice to feel good about. The platter was generously portioned, the kind of meal that leaves you satisfied without the need to contemplate dessert. All of it was excellent. The flounder was light and flaky on the inside, with a crisp golden crust that had clearly seen well-seasoned oil and confident hands in the kitchen. The shrimp were equally well-executed. They were plump, tender, and fried just right, without any of the rubbery disappointment that lesser seafood joints often deliver. Even the fries held their own, providing a solid, starchy counterpoint to all that seafood goodness. The wait wasn't at all bad either, which is worth mentioning because a place this good can often mean a crowd. Service was attentive without being overbearing, and the whole experience moved at a comfortable, easy pace. Whether you're a Gainesville local or just passing through, Gainesville Seafood is the kind of place worth going a little out of your way for, and once you've been, you'll understand why people keep coming back.
