Our first time coming experience: To preface: My wife and I enter, greeted by no one really. We see a huge menu above the register, so we figured it was an order at the front, seat yourself kind of deal. After fumbling a bit with the menu (which is pretty extensive), more people come. Same deal, we don't know what we want, they don't know what they want; we're lost. One of the staff let us know that we can sit and they will take the order when ready. So, first timers, save yourself some of the embarrassment by grabbing a menu and seating yourself. Beyond that, everything else was great! ~*To start: Queso Fundido, Chips and Salsa*~ Served with a ramekin of melted, stringy cheese topped with (very mild) chorizo. Pretty standard stuff, but what really sold me was the crispy, 'cooked' cheese that came alongside the tortillas. They basically lay a thin sheet of grated cheese straight on the griddle and let it cook down to a crisp and it adds a fantastic texture to the smooth, melty cheese. I had never experienced this before in a queso fundido, well played! The chips are pretty good! Weren't fried too much earlier from our arrival. They make 4 salsas here, my favorite being the avocado salsa. Tasty on everything! ~*Mains: Huarache de Lengua (cow tongue) and Asada*~ They asked me if I wanted, "everything," on it. I said, "yes." Little did I know, it came with the normal huarache fare (bean base on top of the heavy tortilla, meat, cheese, onions, cilantro) WITH a HUGE nopale 'steak' (grilled cactus) on top. I like nopales, but not THIS much. I was very surprised when it came to our table. I was only able to eat one of the nopales. The lengua was by far a standout here. Asada, pretty standard. Both meats were a bit under-seasoned, but had great texture; especially the lengua. Good, thick huarache tortilla. Unsure if made in-house. ~*Wife Mains: Alambre de Asada*~ Alambre hits home for us, as my father-in-law makes this specialty dish wonderfully. Warning: This may be a bit harsh on judgement. It is very good here, but going up against what we consider the holy grail of alambre, we rate it around 7.5-8 out of 10. A little greasy, as alambre typically is, good asada, nice cheesy consistency, and very stringy. The bacon flavor kind of took over the asada a little bit, but overall delicious -- it's bacon, hello?!? Beans were quite good, about an 8/10, and the rice was sub-par, about a 6/10 from us. ~*Verdict*~ A bit fish-out-of-water feeling for our first time. It was odd that my wife was the only Latina/o in the whole place with about 5 other tables of people. Food was very good. Service was good, despite our first impressions. CHEAP. First time here, and only bcz I was very close by, otherwise I probably wouldn't have gone bcz it's not an inviting place. I was disgusted to see the tamales, very hard & white colored masa (flour). Came to eat at this little Mexican food place thinking the food would be authentic Mexican food but when receiving my plate (Carne Asada plate) I came to the realization that there was nothing authentic about this place at all besides their overpriced Mexican bottle glass refreshments. I can not express how dissatisfied I was . The plate averaged around 15.99 so naturally I thought I was going to get my money's worth. The plate came with a side of brown canned beans, greasy red rice that was clumped together in little balls because when microwaving it they cared less about making it seem any type of fresh and last by not least iceberg salad that came with no dressing but a slice of ripe tomato and a slice of an old lime . I do not even want to get started with the texture of the Steak. The piece of meat was way too rough to chew or to even rip with my own bare hands. The tortillas that i ordered on the side weren't even heated correctly. You can tell they threw a few tortillas in the microwave and delivered them to me just like that! If I wanted a mediocre asada plate for the same price, I would have taken the extra mile and drove down to my local Pacos tacos to purchase that meal and i know i would have ate way better with the fresh tortillas that Paco's serves but that's what I get for trusting a hole in the wall place ! The asada was a little plant but the rest of the flavors on the Huaraches brought it up, it came with a large peice of nopal. My partner got the cheese Enchiladas and those were pretty bomb. Las Ranas Café is a small, nondescript Mexican restaurant in an area full of small, nondescript Mexican restaurants. I was in the area, hungry, and it was the first place that I noticed. I decided to give it a try, and got my food to go. I ordered a three taco combo, with al pastor, chicken, and carne aside tacos. It came with sides of rice and beans, and also a canned soda, all for $7.99 plus tax. Everything tasted good, and I especially liked the al pastor taco. My only issue with my meal was that the portion size was very small and unfilling. I would rate the food as four stars, but I have to deduct a star for how little food I received. I wouldn't mind giving Las Ranas another try. I know that they have good tasting food, but I need to select something a little bit more filling so that I am not left feeling hungry afterwards. read more

I came in today and the lady tried to charge me $13.00 for the same thing. She had such a nasty attitude with me over the difference in price. Come to find out she says she was the owner. The menu is in Spanish, but the menu items have numbers next to them and they are are friendly, fluent English speakers if you need help deciphering the many options they offer. I love this place, I just wish they were more reliable when it comes to delivery. They used to deliver every day and now you have to call and ask and about half the times they don't. Breakfast review - Before reviewing any breakfast burrito joint, I feel obliged to try their chorizo burrito. This time I'm breaking my rule because I was super surprised by their burrito. They had peppers and other veggies inside their burrito, which will always win me over, plus the spicy salsa was tasty. I'm giving this a high recommendation. This is a really good decent spot for Mexican food. These guys go off the wall with their hot sauce. It's a really good lunch/dinner spot to go on a cheap run. I have to rank it up there with King Taco which does say something about quality. I was just expecting one sauce but they ended giving me like 4 different kind of hot sauce plus chips and fresh salsa. I love choices!! The Cane Asada burrito and Chorizo breakfast jeesuz christ. Doe they always have to be big so big? The portion are just are way more than generous and of course traditional Mexican style on pricing which means good food for good prices and very generous amounts. There are so many good Mexican places in LA it's hard to say what is the best one out there. Every spot has their own unique style from their place of origin. Always the Mexican food critic, I was in the area working and had a hankering for a really good mexican breakfast..... you know huevos rancheros, rice beans and really good sauce. MMMMMM. This is not a great place in terms of finding parking but if you are lucky you can get parking in the front. I brought two of my co-workers with me for quick breakfast. I ordered the huevos rancheros, my co-workers ordered the breakfast burrito and steak and eggs. I must say this was YUMMY!! The food was nice and hot, fresh and the eggs were bathed in this wonderful red sauce with grilled peppers and onions on top. Fully flavored and with just a hint of spiciness. Not to mention the not to crispy and not too soggy tortilla that was holding the perfectly fried egg and sauce. The beans were creamy and not made with lard so that was a plus. What really made my morning was the three different homemade hot sauces they placed at your table with chips, prior to your order coming. The avocado sauce was my favorite. It had a really good kick and was creamy but slightly chunky with the pieces of avocado. The other sauces were great too. This is a real treat. I am not sure about lunch but it looks really good. If their lunch is as good as their breakfast, then I am hooked. I will definitely be coming back to try their queso fundido, which is a real test of culinary expertise. It's a solid choice. Don't let the location fool you because they offer up great food in a nice, clean environment. The guy at the cashier was very friendly. If you can somehow make it through the laundry list menu of options and finally are able to choose just one thing to eat like I finally did after 5 agonizing minutes of hemming and hawing then the hardest part is essentially over. I loved the warm basket of tortilla chips and the carrier of 4 salsas that come with it. So good. I ordered the Torta Milanesa and it was good, although I wished there was a little more Milanesa in my Torta. My colleague enjoyed her fish burrito a lot as well. Overall, it's definitely worth hitting up. I would go back and try out some of the breakfast items on the menu for lunch. read more

It was alright. I came here to shut my stomach up for one of its chilaquile cravings and sadly it wasn't what I was expecting. Their sauce is a lot different from other Mexican restaurants I've tried in the area. It had a real tamarindish taste which was strange for me. I also ordered some cheese enchiladas which were alright. I've had better so again I was a little disappointed. The customer service was excellent though. Went today and got 4 breakfast burritos which were supposed to have eggs, bacon and hashbrowns, when I got my food it had a bunch of other stuff in it, I called him to see if they can fix it and he told me no and clicked. I was a little annoyed with the homeless guy that kept coming in to the restaurant, but then again, I also thought it was very sweet of them to give him coffee and beans.
