So it seems that every corner I turn in National City, there is a fruiteria. Las Uvas was recommended by a coworker for their rapados (snow cones). They are made with real fruit! Unfortunately, I haven't had there Raspados yet. I did have their fruit salad. It was good, BUT where were the uvas (grapes)???? It was supposed to have grapes in it and it's in the name of the place! My other problem with their salads is that they don't do a good job of mixing up the fruit. The banana was non-existent until I got to the bottom. Also the mango wasn't ripe enough. They are topped with the usual cottage cheese, granola, and honey on the side. Salads are priced the usual $5 for a small. It is cash only. Service isn't very good though. There were two unfriendly ladies behind the counter and they were so slow. I considered walking out because neither of them greeted me nor the three other people that walked in after me. I understand sometimes you are busy, but at least acknowledge your customer! Anyways, On a hot day, I will probably be back for a mango raspado since they were highly recommended. Hope that experience is better. read more

HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE! If I could give them ZERO stars I would. I've never been to a less accommodating business. Ever. The old lady (owner) could not make any substitutions to the fruit salads, she acted like everything was impossible. Then she lied and said she was out of papaya when I saw it in plain sight over her chiller. The minute I placed my order and handed her my CASH I immediately regretted giving this lady any of my business, she was not only impossible to deal with the lady was dry and RUDE. Her younger employee with the bad eyebrows was also horrid. My ordering process was frustrating but man oh man did it get worse. First of all she failed to ask me if my order was "for here or to go" mind you it was hot as balls in there and of course they are so cheap they didn't have any ac on. So when they called me up to get my order of Tostilocos they handed it over to me in the original bag but I hesitated to grab it because actually wanted to enjoy it in the comfort of my own home. When I asked her if she could just give it to me in a to go container she looked at the owner and pretty much laughed and said "she wants it to go" (as if that was an absurd request) the owner shook her head NO! So the employee looks at me and says "these are your two options: take it as is or I can dump it into a plastic grocery bag" WHAT THE HECK?!?!!!!!!!! The thing that did it for me was when I told her I would be taking my ENTIRE order to go so please get it ready for me to GO. So i left my items on the counter so that they could get my order finished then after waiting a while the girl comes with a dumb smirk on her face and says "you waited too long to come and get your order so the lady after you just took it" Really???? This had me floored. That was it they gave me a perfect reason to ask for my CASH back. I was surprised they did. They have no business being in business with horrid customer service like that! Terrible customer service! I went in today for the first time to get a sandwich and smoothie. She made the smoothie first, then was made to wait 15 minutes for the sandwich that I never got because I walked out. And I was the only customer there! The girl behind the bar was sneezing and wheezing, and even retching in the sink and I decided I didn't want to wait another minute for this sandwich so I left $5 for my terrible smoothie and bounced. I realized as I was walking out that someone I thought was a customer sitting in a chair gossiping with another woman loudly was actually another employee on her break who could have assisted the seemingly sick girl. It didn't seem like anyone was too concerned for the still-waiting customer. All the red flags were too overwhelming and I left fearing I would catch something from lunch. The five star rating may be due to the fact that I hadn't had Tejuino in a good 9 years and was ecstatic that we finally found a place in San Diego with Tejuino that tastes much like that I used to get in Mexicali :) it is a little thicker than I am used to but all is good and delicious! Tejuino is a fermented corn drink made of sprouted corn, a molases like sugar (piloncillo) and water, then it is mixed with rock salt, and fresh lime juice. It may sound a little odd but you MUST open up your culinary taste buds and go out of your safety zone (that is a disclaimer for those people who have never had it) you either love it or dislike it, I LOVE it!!! This little place is like a gem, it's been around for about four years apparently according to the lady that was working there. We pretty much flooded their place when we showed up, our Mother was the person who took us here since she had already had the Tejuino before and wanted us to try it out, we walked in there party of 5 to a one lady show, and gotta say that considering it was only 1 person handling the conundrum of orders she was VERY composed and quick for just one person, quality takes time and I could see by their fresh fruit display that all their fruit is extremely fresh, I had initially ordered a tuna torta because that's usually what I do when I go to a sandwich shop, by ordering something such as a tuna sandwich I feel that I am able to personally gauge the quality of food preparation (tuna will go bad rather quickly so if you have OLD tuna that says a lot about your food rotation) well she was OUT of tuna (or hadn't made any yet)! So I was pleased to hear that since it was rather early anyway :) so I got myself a Torta de Lomo. All tortas are served toasty warm/hot which is delicious except you have to be careful because as anyone who likes to eat toasty rolls knows they can hurt the roof of your mouth after a while hahaah! Well the pain was not bothersome, my nephew's fruit salad looked delicious! Pico de Gallo is sooo good! Place looked immaculate, smells were good, ambiance was welcoming (mexican TV show in the background, surprised the lady could hear and memorize all our orders!) Since this place is considerably far away from me I've decided that the next time I go I am buying myself two large Tejuino drinks (one the classic way and another in that chamoy style I was reading) and I will take them home with me and keep them in my fridge and drink them slowly :p time only makes it better! Anyway, just letting you all know that this place has VERY good Tejuino and I highly recommend anyone go ahead and try it! AND if you DON'T like it :p go ahead and find me and throw that cup in my face! Just make sure it still has Tejuino so I can bathe in it! ^_^ Mmmm.... tasty... oh and BTW... just want to point this out... When I used to live in Calexico, Mother and I used to go to Mexicali to go shopping, on our way back from Mexicali we would spot the little Tejuino stands with the giant "Tejuino" sign and HAD to stop! That dumb sign would pull us in no matter what! I am 100% certain that is the reason Mom found this place, because right under their food store sign is a very attention grabbing "Tejuino" sign and if I were in my Mom's shoes and presented with the same circumstances she encountered on her way to some other place and saw that Tejuino sign... Yep I would have made that same exact stop too. Love, love, LOVE their diablitos! They are my absolute favorite. One of the best things about them is that the ice is not little rocks. It is finely shaved. their diablitos are the perfect mixture of sweet and spicy with the chamoy, chile, lemon/lime, and fresh fruit with the fruit syrup. This place is the shit! They make tortas, raspados, smoothies, etc. NOTE: They only take cash. But they make everything right on the spot. My husband and I got the tortas de pavo (turkey) and lomo (pork). They were delicious. Literally hot from the oven, as in, I needed a second for the torta itself to cool down. (Ok, I may have burned my tongue.) I love that it tastes fresh, and like it was made at home, not processed and thawed out that morning (sorry Subway!). We've also had the raspado diabloito and esamocha (i.e., fruit salad). Both were so so SO good. Like another review said, this place is legit and damn good. They do take a relatively long time to make stuff, so be patient. It will be worth it but word to the wise, don't go there entirely starving. read more

This place has its ups and downs. Pros: the fruit is always fresh and they're not stingy on the sauces. The green juices are to die for!! They're super tasty and they don't add ice so that you get what you paid for. Cons: as the other reviews mentioned, the customer service is pretty bad. When there's a lot of customers they have zero sense of urgency while working. The cashiers stare at you while you order without a smile or a reassuring "ok" the also take awhile to prepare your order and scream over the counter to ask you what you ordered after you already placed the order and paid. Las Uvas is alriiiiiiiiiight. I wanted to give them 4 stars because the food was pretty yummy but there were a few things that were off. I ordered a Pico De Gallo, my husband ordered nieve de queso and our son got tostilocos. 1. The Pico De Gallo - it was really good BUT certain pieces of fruit were warm :( I like my whole plate to be cold and fresh so it was really just the warm mango that threw it off, wah. If it everything would've been the same temperature it would've been perfect. 2. The nieve de queso (cheese ice cream) - since, i've had the queso ice cream at Tocumbo on Market my cheese ice cream expectations are pretty high and this place was meh. Cheese ice cream is supposed to be refreshing and this one was so creamy.. no me gusto. 3. Tostilocos - now these were bomb.com; i think it's the chile they use because a lot of fruterias in National City use some nasty heacy chile but this one was just right. YUMMY! This is a small family operated place. To the person who was unimpressed by the service.... I say they're just really busy (1 or 2 family members) and maybe a little shy. BUT REALLY NICE! I go in for a Pico de Gallo (chunks of watermelon, orange, cucumber, pineapple, mango and jicama - sometimes coconut...SOAKED in limon - aka key limes...w/ a little salt and Tajin (chili powder) several times a month. The smoothies and authentic Mexican alternatives (tejuino, clamato, diablito...) are delicious and the tortas are scrumptious and made to order...CAN'T EVEN COMPARE TO SANDWICHES AT DELI'S SANDWICH SHOPS!
