The 76 Diner is a solid, popular diner in a great location. The diner is located in the geographic center of the Capital District. It is easy to get to from any direction. For that reason, it's a great place to meet up with people. No matter where people are coming from, you can just say, "meet me at the 76 Diner." In fact, of all the times I have been to the 76 Diner, it was always to meet someone. There is plenty of off street parking. If I remember correctly, it used to open 24/7 but now it closes at 10 PM. That's plenty late enough to schedule a meeting with someone. The diner has an extensive menu with good quality food. Everyone will be able to find something on the menu they like. Service is above average. The 76 Diner has been around for a long time for a reason. It is a convenient meeting place where all kinds of people will find something they like on the menu. We have been going to the diner for over 7 years and never ever had an issue. Food always superb. Last night we ordered 5 meals to be picked up Two sandwiches were such a mess it looked like it was a salad and was thrown into the container. Not able to eat as a sandwich it was so bad,was missing both orders of fries as well. The turkey Ruben had no sauerkraut and no Russian dressing which was ordered to be in the bread. This is hands down our new all time favorite diner. The breakfast menu has something for every discerning foodie. The Athenian Omelet was delicious. And, the traditional two egg hungry man's breakfast was a meal to remember, accompanied by a bountiful serving of crispy bacon! Our waitress was so very, very friendly and patient allowing us ample time to look over the extensive menu. They had a showcase of desserts for selection near the cashier station. After eating here regularly for years, I don't know that I'll come back anytime soon, sadly. The food was good, the service was great, but the treatment by the hostess was less than good. Granted, we arrived during their last hour of business, but if a place is open, it's open. While we were waiting for our food, the hostess loudly exclaimed, "Well, so much for getting out of here at 9:00." Not something I would say well within earshot of customers. We ate out food with adequate speed and waited for boxes to take our leftovers. The check was dropped by the server, our things were boxed up, we were getting ready to leave, and the hostess comes over to tell us, "We closed five minutes ago. You should be leaving now." I kid you not, the check was on the table for less than one minute at this point. So, food and server, great! Hostess, not at all great, and maybe should think about a job in some other line of work. I have a bit of a weak spot for diners. I mean, where else can you mix and match meals at any time of day and get a good slice of cake for dessert? Latham 76 is one of the handful of 24/7 diners in the Albany area. Every town doesn't have one, so you might need to travel a little ways, but a 10-15 minute drive to Latham 76 isn't horrible, especially if I'm already shopping nearby. Large menu, plenty of space inside, and everything I've had is good, including burgers, breakfast items, and sandwiches. My last 2 meals from Latham 76 have been a bit different from normal thanks to the pandemic. But they've still been quite tasty even at home. Both times, I was craving a French dip. For a reasonable price, I got a massive sandwich with a decent portion of onion rings as a side. The cake I got for dessert one of those meals had to be saved for later because I couldn't eat another bite. But when I did eat the cake, it was chocolatey perfection. read more

A 24 hour diner. Wow! I didn't realize that was an option around these parts. I met up with a group here after a play I attended. I was presented with what was clearly the "anytime" menu. I really should go back and check out their full menu some time. Maybe they make something good. Breakfast perhaps? Unfortunately what I did order was awful. After a short deliberation I went with a steak sandwich with a side of potato salad. My mom makes the best potato salad in the world. This potato salad might have been the worst. It was still warm, bland and too heavy on the vinegar. No amount of salt and pepper could save it. The steak sandwich had a nice roll. It was toasted. After that it was horrendous. It was too small. It wasn't cooked on the griddle and the cheese was melted on top. The beef was cheap, soggy and tasted like a poorly made french dip with an overwhelming onion taste. If you are going to make a cheese steak please do some research on how it is made! This wasn't even close. In summary. Do not order the cheese steak at this diner unless you plan to get really annoyed and waste your money. It was 12.99. I can make 4 perfect ones at home for the same price. Dining late at night can be a gamble. Perhaps the "who cares" crew was working. I may try this place again. I have been enjoying the '76 Diner all my life. It is the same as it was in the 70s and 80s (in a good way). Clean, friendly, and a sense of nostalgia for times before all restaurants were corporate chains. '76 Diner is genuine. Plus the menu is huge - everybody will find something they will enjoy. We went as a group of 6 at around noon on a Saturday. One waitress said she had a table big enough for us all but needed to wipe it down, another waiter did not care and squeezed us all into one booth. It was decently crowded long line to pay. Food wasn't in good portions. 3 of our party got the "big breakfast" spoiler alert it wasn't a big breakfast. I got the breakfast sandwich which was a little sad. One of our part got a Buffalo wrap, honestly it looked kinda good and the fries were good (confirmed). Last of our party got eggs Benedict seemed okay. Our waitress (different from the one who seated us) was really scary. She got mad at one of us for taking a while to order and proceeded to smack the table with a stick (not joking). A bit of a family reunion, eight of us were seated in Elaine's section. She was a thoughtful, funny, witty server who took and delivered our meal with experienced grace. She was mindful, and apologized several times on behalf of the kitchen when the lasagna was significantly delayed from the rest of the meals ordered. Side note: it was delicious, so worth the wait! This place has taken a nosedive in every way possible. They used to be so good, not anymore. I ordered the diner classic, hot open faced turkey sandwich. Nothing was hot, bread, and baked potato were stale, gravy was gross. Service was terrible, still left a tip though. There's way better diners like Blue Ribbon. My husband ordered the turkey club, fries were cold stake and chewy, turkey club was mid. While we were there we overheard complaints from other customers, that probably should've been a red flag for us. read more

I was in a Helter Skelter mood and didn't know what I wanted for dinner, but I wanted to go someplace with a large selection of options and I wasn't interested in breakfast for dinner. I brought my wife here despite having reservations (no, not the type you call in advance) and figured I would give them another chance. We were quickly seated in a nice comfy booth though it was obvious that they were busy. There were some counter seats that looked like they would be fun to eat at. They had three tvs on... one to Fox News, one to CNN, and the third to Spectrum News. At least they play fair. I started by ordering an appetizer sampler of wings (4) and chicken fingers (2). The wings came out very soggy and wet, as if they had been steamed to warm them instead of frying them. The medium Buffalo sauce had decent heat but a strange aftertaste that likely meant it came from a bottle. The chicken fingers were large, thin, and unremarkable. Then, I had a small bowl of chicken orzo soup that was very good though a tad light on the seasoning. My wife had a green salad that looked like a generic green salad except that it had two colors of peppers in it which elevated it into something a little more. Her ranch dressing tasted bottled. My entree was a beef gyro, and it wasn't very good. It was very greasy, and there was a ton of feta cheese on the inside which made the entire thing extremely salty. There was no easy way to get the cheese out without a gyroectomy so in the end I sort of picked around it. The tomatoes were out of season, and the lettuce was shredded. I was most disappointed with the meat. I didn't expect homemade, but I have had much better frozen gyro meat. My fries were the frozen battered type which I love. My wife's entree was the prime rib, and surprisingly they had multiple cuts available. She ordered an inside, rare piece. It didn't seem very rare when it arrived and it was very fatty, but that might have to do with the cut. She ordered a baked potato but they had just run out so she had mashed potatoes instead, which tasted like plain mashed potatoes. After my salt bomb of a meal, I enjoyed the purity of them. Her brown gravy was served on the side by request and it tasted processed as well. She also had a side of zucchini in tomato sauce with onions that I avoided. After ogling their dessert case we split a piece of coconut custard pie. It looked great, but sadly didn't deliver. The texture was chunky and dried out, and since we had the last piece that was in a bowl sitting in the case I suspect it had been there a while. If we had ordered two pieces, they would have had to cut into the brand new pie behind it. Grrr. In all, it was a very unsatisfying meal. Besides the food not tasting very homemade for a diner, there were some service issues as well. Our waitress was very friendly but very busy and we didn't see her a lot. She brought some of our food to the wrong table and then had to correct it. She brought the wrong side dish to my wife (though that could be on the cooks, not her). It was a very slow meal, but I wasn't in a rush. For a diner though, at 7PM, it seemed unusually slow. As we left the friendly female manager who seemed to know all the regulars asked how our meal was. I said "It was ... okay" and expected her to follow up. She didn't, so I let my discontent sit. In general, I expected an average meal here and that is what I got. Their menu is too large for them to focus on making everything well, but I thought by trying various things I might hone in on what they do best. This review is based on one experience, at breakfast time.... so take it for what you will. Short story: okay food, neat and clean interior, slow service. Overall average, and a decent place to not feel hurried out the door if you're not picky about food. The food.... Home fries potatoes were small chunks, boiled, and soft. No crunchy exterior. Boo. Over easy eggs were in fact cooked over easy, but still oddly unappetizing. French toast was thick cut bread and well toasted, but had a completely dry interior and lacked any type of flavor. Bacon was thin and crunchy. The Service....this is what killed it for me personally. The waitstaff wasn't rude, but wasn't friendly. I usually call this neutral and move on. But, we waited. A lot. We waited at every point of the meal. Initially we ended up having to go ask another employee for our waitress so we could order (yes, we did say we needed a minute, but ten?? Nope, not that long) and once the food came out (half of the orders were cool), it took a while for her to swing back to top off drinks. I had to get up to ask for a few extra things the table needed, which isn't terrible, but kind of disappointing. She eventually left a water pitcher which was thoughtful and much appreciated. The ambiance...having low expectations about diner interiors, I was pleasantly surprised to see a variety of seating options (bar, booths, corner booths, tables, children's chairs, a quieter section near the front and a more group friendly section towards the back), clean tables that weren't sticky, and no overt grunginess. They have a large parking lot and the ramp entrance is in the back of the building, FYI. If I could give 2.5 stars, I would as I'd say this fits exactly what I think average is. After I was seated, I realized immediately that the server assigned to me wasn't happy for whatever reason. I was uncomfortable with their noticeable attitude and lack of checking in on me from time to time. I noticed other people sitting near me weren't happy with the same service. I put up with it for a while then eventually got the bill at the end. After I filled out the final slip and stood to leave... They rushed back over, picked up the slip (it had a tip amount now) and as I went to say something they interrupted me with an irritated "oh I appreciate this..." I have never had a waiter or waitress do anything like this. It was a $2 tip on an $11 bill (18%). They knew it wasn't going to be a big payday because I only ordered a grilled cheese (everything else was too expensive). They were obviously being sarcastic with "appreciation" and... interrupting me while I'm trying to leave so they can check the tip line and comment? That's unacceptable. I talked to a few people afterwards (including my 80 year old grandmother) and asked each of them if they had ever dealt with something like this while eating out. They all said no, never. I was appalled. Check out the diner right up the road instead. Not only is the menu overpriced here but they left me motivated to write this review. read more

Was visiting a friend who took me here since she said it's a staple of Latham. I thought it was just good and I would definitely come back. I thought the best part was the sausage which weren't the tiny little breakfast ones you normally get at diners. The pancakes were sweet and delicious too. My first visit here in 1.75 score (I said it that way so it would not be so obvious just how long it's been) was nostalgic. While I was a student at Siena, we used to come here at 2am after hours of studying for omelettes. Since they're open 24/7, I wonder if they've ever been closed since my last visit. I liked the new tile floors, but in general it felt a little more rustic and slightly darker than I remembered. We were seated on a Saturday morning about 10:30 and given breakfast menus. That's fine, since I needed to have the obligatory omelette. But being given just a breakfast/brunch menu, I wonder if they were saying these are your only options. It's quite possible people coming in at that time might have wanted a lunch item like a sandwich; hopefully a full menu was available on request. I liked the fact that they offer low-carb options with your breakfast instead of toast and home fries, such as grilled tomatoes or spinach and feta. I did order the spinach and feta, which also has a large amount of garlic (that's a good thing). While they seem to insist on calling it spinach and feta, it's essentially creamed spinach, and very good creamed spinach. The omelettes are sort-of in-between a traditional omelette and a fritatta. Mine had some of the ingredients in the center, i.e., between the fold, but some in the egg batter itself. Mine included bacon, and it actually had full strips of bacon on the outside, like the bacon was in the pan initially, and the egg batter was poured on it. But while one can argue about the aesthetics of whether an omelette should have all its ingredients on the inside, you can't argue about how good they are. Service was good, and some of the staff beyond our waitress pitched in, taking drink orders and keeping our coffee cups full. It probably won't be another 1.75 score to my next visit. read more

The Late Night menu offers basic fare such as sandwiches, salads, soups, homestyle platters, and delectable homemade desserts and baked goods from the large display case. The cakes looked sooo good! My buddy and I stopped here recently for some grub after a short night in Downtown Albany. I had a Shrimp Salad Sandwich with potato salad, which was simple, bread toasted, burnt along edges, but decent. My buddy had a garden salad and the Roast Turkey Dinner with stuffing & gravy and baked potato with sour cream & vegetables, which was tasty and filling. He had several drinks and needed a lot of food. The service was spot on with several refills on soda given (the glasses are small). This diner had been consistent and dependable for us. Occasionally my mother and stepfather will pop into town for a quick lunch. Usually, I try to pick interesting places to bring them. Perhaps they have been a little bit too interesting. Because on the recent trip, the request was for "regular food" or something like that. So we were off to the Latham '76 Diner. I probably should have realized that they would be crowded on a Sunday around brunch time, but the 10 minute wait wasn't really that bad. We were in a bit of a hurry, and our waitress seemed a little stretched thin, but it all worked out. This was my first trip here, and I would say that for a maiden voyage, it was reasonably successful. Sometimes you have to visit a diner several times to really figure out what they do best. But having the option of ordering your egg and cheese on a hard roll with over easy eggs, is worth the premium of having to pay $6 for the sandwich. The kitchen makes sure not to break the yolks, and presents each half of the hard roll as an opened face cheese and egg sandwich. So it's up to you to put them together and burst the yolks. It's a sensuous pleasure. Good crisp bacon was another upside. And while it's always a little disappointing when pancakes come with "pancake syrup" instead of the real stuff, it's better that what Latham '76 serves is made from corn syrup instead of high fructose corn syrup. The only real miss were the potatoes, which came out less done than I'd like them. But the next time I visit, I'll try to remember to ask for them "well done" or "extra crusty" and see how they work out. Or, I could skip the potatoes entirely and amuse myself with a further exploration of the breakfast sandwich menu, because breakfast sandwiches are a good idea regardless of the time of day. read more
