Before Laverne's closed their Waipahu location, my family would always frequent their restaurant because of their squid luau and fried chicken (they make the best one on the island). They are located next to Leonards Malasadas in the Waikele Shopping Center, open 7 days a week from 10:30am-8:00pm. We love this Laverne's . They are hands down our favorite Hawaiian food place. We use to go to their old location in Waipahu all the time. But even tho it's a only a food truck now, we can't tell the difference in the food. The service is fast. And the workers are always really friendly. Today I attended the "Grand Opening" of this food truck in the Waikele Shopping Center and was once again surprised at the quality of food that can come out of these trucks. The staff is great as well, really friendly. Alright, now on to the food. I ordered the regular Kalua pig and cabbage plate, I loved it, just like what we make at home. The cabbage was fresh and had a nice texture to it while the pig still carried a faint smokey flavor, for $8 you get a nice amount of food as you can see in the pictures with this review. My friend ordered the mini Beef Stew and says that it was good, what he'd expect from a food truck, he would order it again. . .I got an instant "Yes" when I asked him that question. The truck itself is right in front of Leonard's malasada truck which means that you have the ample parking opportunities of the main parking lot and a lot of grass space to stand and eat, or sit on a curb or towel or something. If I had to tell the owner something negative it would be to reverse the direction of their red carpet thing leading up to the window, right now the roll side is a trip hazard, I'd personally put that part underneath the truck. All in all I'm starting to learn not to underestimate these lunch wagons. Great staff, good food and happy belly's have landed Laverne's Lunch Wagon a solid 5 stars. read more

Whenever I'm shopping in Waikele and have a craving for smoked meat, this is the place I turn to. This little lunch wagon is parked right next to the infamous Leonards malasadas truck, fronting kmart. I love hawaiian food, but I often come here for the smoked meat and chicken long rice. Laverne's what can I say?? I've been with them since their restaurant in Waipahu. My daughter and I would go sit and eat. When they closed I was so sad and just catered from them for family gatherings, then when I heard about the food truck, I told ALL my family and friends!! Smoked meat plate is the bomb!! Tried a side order squid luau, pretty good. A little salty sweet taste with coconut milk flavor and very tender pieces of squid. Mac salad was good too. If you don't know better ask somebody! My boyfriend loves their plates here ono grindz with good prices! Tonight we drove here at last minute for their desserts because I have been craving them ever since Monday we couldn't go because of the rain and traffic. We live in Makiki so we didn't want to turn back but tonight I was happy to hear that they still had some desserts left and we bought them all! Thanks to the owner we received 50% so why not by them all!? lol I have a sweet tooth and I will go the extra mile for some good dessert and my boyfriend said they sell some bomb ass desserts even though he prefers their food ;) The customer service here is great!! Uncle was not in a good mood today! In fact, he was quite rude. Sorry your understaffed but customer service is an important key factor to keep your regulars coming back for more.. They failed to get my order complete and my plate was not he same without the lomi salmon and haupia. I come by at least once a week, sometimes even 2x/wk cause the food is usually to die for but it wasn't on point today. I hope this is not going to be the beginning of the decline of great quality food and/or service. read more

My daughter went to Waikele to get a boba drink from Taste Tea and we were hungry so we thought we'd try Laverne's since it had been a very long time since I've had it. We ordered a mix plate of two of their specials of the day, chop steak & Pastele stew. The chop steak was very tasty but the stew was just okay. I didn't like the big chunks of meat...not what I'm used to. However, we did like the Mac salad. Just happened to be parked in the Costco parking lot facing Laverne's Lunch Wagon which was parked on Ka Uka Blvd. Yelped to see what kind of food/ratings. Hawaiian food was mentioned as ono... especially their squid luau...had to try! The Kalua Pig and Squid Luau combo was surprisingly good from a lunch wagon! Ordered poi instead of rice ($1.25 extra)...total cost was $10.25. The plate included lomi-lomi salmon, haupia, poi, squid luau and kalua pig. I loved Lavernes Smoke Meat and Mahi with butter sauce with capers. It was always soo delicious!! With that being said, the last two times I went, I was disappointed. Not only did I battle the crazy evening traffic in the Waikele area, the Smoke Meat wasnt the same (tasted wierd so didnt eat much of it) but the Mahi was amazing! This time the Smoke Meat was on point but the Mahi had no capers and I love capers and it had very little sauce because the rice barely absorbed any. I know it's probably my fault because I shouldved checked my big order but I only found out now that they forgot to give my side squid luau. I tried calling the food truck but the number has been disconnected. I contacted the catering department but they just told me to keep calling the food truck but I can't call it because it says number has been disconnected. Here's everything I've tried from these lunch wagons: Beef Stew: Had a sweeter flavor than regular beef stew & it was fatty. Grade C Pork Adobo: Every piece was 90% fat. I couldn't even eat it & the bit that I did try had no flavor! Grade F Baked Chicken: The chicken itself doesn't have too much flavor. The skin is covered in brown gravy so it gets soggy. Grade C- Kalua Pig & Cabbage: Good flavor but my dad found bones in his! Grade C Teri Chicken: It was good. Kind'a hard to mess that up tho. Grade A Smoked Meat: A little hard but pretty good. Grade A- Mahi Mahi: Really buttery- almost too much but good flavor. A little fishy but I could still eat it and I hate fish! Grade B Customer service: Laverne is not too friendly & she overcharged me for chicken. $8 for 2 pieces!!! For this reason I knocked off one star. Her son has better customer service. We don't plan on eating at these trucks anymore. read more
