My girlfriend and I went to Layered cafe and it is now our new favorite cafe! The desserts are pure art and the drinks are so unique and tasty. It may be on the pricier side but everything is worth it because you can't easily make them at home. The interior is her aesthetic and a great place to study or hangout with friends. We went two times within the past week. So good!
Love it here! The location is very spacious and has so much seating. The staff were also great. I tried the banana bread matcha, it was very good and creamy. It was a bit sweet for my liking but it was still a great treat!
Layered! Very cute, but busier than Penn Station during commuter hours lol. Just kidding, it wasn't quite that bad, but it was definitely packed, which is a testament to how popular they are . My family visited on a random evening just before dinner. When you walk in, it feels like a cross between a coworking space and a bakery. There's plenty of seating, and the space feels welcoming and well designed. When you're ready to order, you step up to the counter where you're greeted by the most unfair display of desserts imaginable. They're basically smiling at your back and waving your diet goodbye . My family and I ended up trying almost one of everything, with the exception of anything containing nuts since we're all allergic. If I'm being honest, the more acidic flavors were the standouts for me. Anything with lemon or lime was fantastic. The lavender and strawberry options were good as well, but their flavors were much more delicate and subtle. The customer service was great. Even though the place was busy, the staff genuinely seemed to care about doing a good job and taking care of customers, which was very much appreciated. Parking can be a little rough on busy days, but it's definitely not DC-level awful lol. I'll definitely be back. Mostly because the desserts have already convinced me that my fitness goals can wait another day.
Layered is a dessert place in Fairfax that is an extension of Chateau de Chantilly. They're known for their viral fruit shaped mousses and aesthetic. There's plenty of free parking in the lot of the complex as well as indoor and outdoor seating At this cafe, you can order mousses, drinks, and some savory baked pastries. The prices are really expensive, but that'd due to the Instagram hype around the 3D fruit desserts. The ambiance inside is good for a first date or hanging out with a group of 2-4 friends to catch up. It's clean and Instagram content friendly. To order, you stand in line and one of the people behind the counter plate your desserts and takes your drink order before you pay. We got the cafe au lait and the raspberry. The cafe au lait was ~$6, the raspberry was ~$12, and each of the drinks were ~$8.50. The cafe au lait was delicious - the mouse paired well with the cake inside and wasn't overpowered by the coffee flavor. The raspberry, however, was too tart and the cookie on the bottom was really hard to break with a spoon. The pistachio latte was delicious, but the texture of the pistachios in the drink made the experience unpleasant. The mango matcha and strawberry matcha, however, were the perfect amount of sweet. I'd recommend trying this place once for the hype, but, honestly, the desserts were too expensive and not as enjoyable as i'd liked.
I can definitely see why there is so much hype about this place. The desserts all look amazing. Almost too good to eat. The desserts are kind of pricey. I stopped in to try their version of a dot cake. The cake was $10. It was decent in size. The flavor of the cake was not too overpowering and overall satisfied my need to try something new.
1. Aesthetic, good for the gram, picture perfect cakes. A lot of hype! Expensive with each cake about $10, but no price tags on the displays. They do not taste as good as they look though. Pistachio cake: 4/5, creamy and heavily chocolatey, with no texture change. Pistachio taste masked by the chocolate. Crunchy pieces inside were soggy. Tasted better after sitting in the fridge overnight. Creme brulee cake:3/5 missing the creme brulee concept but a nice light vanilla cake with some lavender pieces. Cappuccino was well made and reasonably priced. Iced pistachio latte tasted like pistachios and had a decent coffee taste too. Overall: come here if you're looking for a pretty cake photo and creamy cake with an outer crisp layer but not an exceptionally flavored cake. Lots of indoor seating, a few outdoor seats, and free parking. To go bags were nice and sturdy to transport the cake in one piece.
Asian-style buns, petite cakes, and good coffee? You know I'm there! This café is spacious and is designed intentionally for folks to work, read, or just relax. The staff are super friendly. One of them kindly told me that I can warm up my bun in the microwave that's for customers to use. It was a terrific place to spend a few hours while getting work done!
There honestly aren't enough good things I can say about this place, my only complaint is that I don't live closer! The cakes are amazing, and I often bring them to clients who absolutely go crazy over them. Everything I've tried has been delicious. But for me, it's all about the matcha. They've introduced a few new flavors recently, but I always go back to my favorite, the strawberry shortcake matcha latte with oat milk. Easily the best matcha in NOVA. I make it a point to stop by anytime I'm within a 10 minute drive. The atmosphere is such a good mix of coffee shop and coworking space, and there are always people working, meeting up, or just hanging out. Whether I'm placing a large order or just grabbing one drink for myself, the service is consistently great. The staff is always friendly, and everything comes out quickly. They also have a really solid rewards program. I regularly end up getting a few dollars off my latte, which is always a nice surprise. If you haven't tried Layered yet, you're seriously missing out.
Been here a few times now. We've also visited their sister store, Chateau de Chantilly which is also good so I had high expectations. Of course, we came mainly to try their fruit shaped desserts and despite the price, they all live up to the hype in my opinion. We've tried just about all of them (and other non-fruit shaped desserts) and you can't really go wrong. Loved the mango and the ube cheesecake. The drinks are good, very creamy and maybe a little too sweet sometimes. Great for a coffee date or an after dinner spot.
Finally tried Layered and now I understand the hype. I tried their Kyoto Latte (latte with condensed milk. The latte was a bit watery, but I can't wait to try their other drinks! And of course I had to try their fruit desserts! From Mango to Matcha Jasmine, everything tastes so fresh, delicious, and beautifully crafted. It's a busy spot but still gives that cozy cafe feel. Finding a seat is a challenge, but so worth it!
We were in the Northern Virginia area and decided to try Layered in Fairfax. We had attempted to visit when they first opened, but at that time they were only doing limited batches. Now, they seem to be producing desserts continuously to keep up with demand. The location appears to be in a former McDonald's building, which gives you a sense of the space, it's fairly large. There are a variety of seating options, and it looks like they've added a new outdoor patio as well. There's a small self-service area for some treats, but most items are ordered from behind the counter. We arrived around 8 PM, and it was busy. We waited about 15 minutes to place our order and another 15 minutes to receive our drinks and desserts. We tried the Yuzu & Limoncello, Rocher, and Café Au Lait desserts (each around $9.40), along with a tiramisu latte ($6.40). Everything was delicious--creamy, well-balanced, and full of flavor. Prices are on the higher side. The cashier was friendly, though it seemed like they might have been understaffed. That said, the team handled the crowd well. Overall, it's a nice spot to check out if you're already in the area, but not somewhere we'd go out of our way to visit.
We've been waiting to try this place for the last year and man was it disappointing. This place is definitely over hyped. The pastries are cute but flavor isn't that great. It's just okay. We got the mango, vanilla, pistachio, yuzu & spinach pie. The spinach pie was the best thing we had unfortunately. Service was great though. The staff are really nice & helpful.
have heard a lot about this place so decided to give it a try since the hype has died down. I love the interior with options to work from super cute! I ordered the banana cream matcha which indeed tasted like banana. I didn't taste much of the matcha but it may due to how strong the banana cream flavor is. I personally would not get it again. I also got to try the cappuccino here and it was the standard capp nothing fancy or "wow" about it. Didn't get to try the dessert items so may need to come back & try it once. Service was friendly overall!
This is a very cute dessert and coffee restaurant. I stumbled across this restaurant after coming from a nail appointment across the street. I've tried several of the matcha drinks and they all have been delicious. I really enjoy appreciate menus the have unique drink options. The pastries are gorgeous! The service has been consistently good every time I have gone. I will definitely return to try more of their coffee and matcha drinks. read more

I've been twice during a weekday around noon time and would say I've never had to deal with the hype/lines. Plenty of pastries but I've never had the fruit pastries myself. I've gotten the cafe au lait dessert which I liked a good amount since I love coffee flavours. I tried their gingerbread tiramisu dessert for their winter selection and I thought it was fine - it was more tiramisu with some ginger elements here and there. Although, I wouldn't say these pastries are worth $9; moreso it's the aesthetic rather than the taste for these. I like their tiramisu latte! I've gotten their coco Pandan matcha and thought it was average - got watery fast and not really strong flavour there. I like working remotely here, although the wifi did die on me once when I needed it... the only outlets I'm aware of are the ones at the island table, which I end up sitting at. I don't know why there are so many chairs at that island though. I recommend the bathroom to the immediate right if you ever need it - it's huge, clean, and nice structure LOL. Also has a separate urinal which isn't in the other bathroom. read more
I don't understand the low rating for this place! This place is amazing, how can anyone walk in and not smile at the beautiful pastries in here. Everything is so beautifully done and perfectly delicious. What is not to like?? The space is nice and open, with plenty of tables, as well as cozy nooks. I had a really hard time deciding and ended up opting for strawberry, yuzu, mango and Rocher. I can't pick a favorite as they were all delicious. read more
Came in n Easter weekend, Saturday, and they were packed. Service was friendly and the line went quick. Kudos to the man in the mask ensuring every customer was taken care of. The desserts are beautiful. The SO and I really enjoyed the Café Au Lait and Rocher were amazing. Not too sweet and plenty of different textures to keep us interested. read more

I must say I was influenced, I saw layered on TikTok and I was so eager to give it a try. We ordered the following cakes: mango, strawberry, café au lait, and a vanilla brûlée. The mango cake had a coating that had an amazing crunch to it. To me, the cake tastes exactly like mango. My daughter tried the strawberry cake and she really enjoyed it, this cake sits on a cookie. The café au lait had a nice a wonderful coffee flavor. This was my favorite cake. The Vanilla brûlée was my least favorite, I don't like the texture. It had a great vanilla flavor. I had a pleasant experience here, the staff was very nice and answered our questions, it's very spacious, and the restrooms were very clean. I do want to come back and try the coffee. Parking is plentiful, which I appreciate. read more
Pretty cakes but major skip on the drinks. I don't know what oat milk they used but it made my throat feel scratchy after it. My guess is that it is oat milk with certain gums in the ingredients. The desserts are cute and aesthetic and the one my BF and I got had a lovely jam on the inside. That being said, I wasn't majorly impressed by the drinks. read more
Good and coffee are decent. Cafe is cozy and a nice place to hang out and chat with friends or study. Not too loud during the weekday mornings. However, it feels over priced. $10-$14 for the fruit cakes seems steep and keeps me from wanting to try it. Decided to try to give it another try. Went to get coffee and meet a friend before work. Was happy to see they open at 7am but sadly no pastries until 8am! So unless you want to eat one of their $14 cakes at 7 in the morning you're better off going somewhere else for an early morning breakfast run. read more

Since we're months out from its grand opening and the social media hype, Layered is not nearly as crowded, and you don't have to worry about anything selling out. There's a lot of indoor and outdoor seating; it's a big space with some nice decor. We stopped in after going to the library right next door and just grabbed some drinks. I ordered the banana bread matcha drink, and it came out quickly. All iced drinks come out in a plastic cup without a lid (you can put one on yourself later). The drink is good; you can really taste the cinnamon and banana. It's incredibly creamy since it has a cold foam-esque topping, but it's also sweet. I know that it's a specialty flavored drink, but you can't taste the matcha over everything added. Additionally, it's more expensive than it's worth ($7.60 including tax), considering the other matcha places in the DMV that do this flavor better and cheaper. read more
This place is a hidden gem. They have some amazing drinks and visibly mouthwatering desserts. The downside is they didn't have dairy free options. Although they didn't offered dairy free options, I admired the detail that it took to create some of the desserts. The inside seating area is so relaxing. This is definitely a place you can bring your laptop or book to and either get some work done or catch up on some reading. The noise level was average also. I would definitely come back for the matcha and the ambiance. read more
Luckily the line was not too long when I visited. I know the lines have been SUPER long since they opened. I was excited to try the Oolong Matcha but was a little disappointed. The outside layer didn't taste that great, but the inside bread tasted better. Out of the pastries we ordered, the strawberry tasted the best. Mango sorta looked like an egg or omelette once the shell was taken off. Inside is very simple, brown and gray stone aesthetic. Has a good amount of seating, but not the most spacious building. read more
Really, really nice. Layered hasn't even formally opened yet, and it's already popular to the point of long lines and crazy popularity. That's definitely for a reason - what they make is almost too pretty to eat! As pretty as their stuff is, it's also tasty - not too sweet, flavorful, very soft, and generally just nice. Needless to say, there are a lot of warnings about the popularity of this place, and that's very valid - expect to wait in line and possibly have to come at an odd time (not sure if that'll still apply once they have their grand opening). All the same, it's totally worth it in my book. read more
Stopped by on a Thursday at 1:30 pm. No lines & fully stocked! Ordered the mango dessert, which was $15 & the rocher for $8. Also got a cortado (hot, Spanish coffee) for $4.5. Desserts were pretty underwhelming for the high price point. I did like how thin the white chocolate shell was on the mango. The whipped cream filling was nothing special, & the mango puree was pretty tart. Overall, it was a good dessert, but I wouldn't pay more than $10 for it. The rocher was very sweet & rich. Heavy burnt caramel flavor & thick caramel in the center. My husband enjoyed it, but if you're like me & prefer your desserts on the less sweet side, definitely pass. Really enjoyed my cortado! Overall, nice vibes & clean, modern decor. Will be back to try their less pricey desserts & drinks. read more

I've been coming here since the first day of their soft opening and really enjoyed their desserts and drinks. It has nice aesthetics inside. I've tried a variety of their desserts, but I would say my favorite is the Rocher dessert, which is like a Ferrero Rocher. The hazelnut inside isn't too sweet and has a nice crispy crunch inside. For drinks I would recommend the Kyoto latte and strawberry matcha. The strawberry matcha has a nice strong matcha taste and wasn't too sweet even with the strawberry. read more
They were still in their soft opening phase for almost a week. This place has been super hyped up so I had to check it out. They must not have been prepared for the rush during their soft opening. The staff seemed overwhelmed. Their system for calling out drinks was terrible, there was a megaphone but you couldn't hear any of the numbers. So everyone was crowding around the pickup counter. We came on a Sunday around 12:30 p.m. They were out of all desserts/snacks and did not have tiramisu lattes. I ordered the pandan coconut, it was okay. The place was crowded but we managed to find seating. Drinks took a very long time as well, and they accidentally messed up on one of our drinks and ended up having to make it again. Would I return? Yes, maybe in a couple weeks or months. I'm hoping they will actually have desserts and all menu items available... read more

Possibly the busiest cafe in NOVA on weekends but worth it! The ube cheesecake is WORTH the money ($10+ for a slice). I also recommend the mango thing. Light and creamy! Their double matcha is amazing. Great service by the baristas! Shoutout to them for keeping up with the insane amount of traffic this place gets. Clean and simple decor perfect for studying during the week or chilling. read more

Their tiramisu cold brew was refreshing yet not too sweet! The pistachio latte was pretty good as well and paired well with the pistachio pastry. There wasn't too much crunch on the inside but still a solid dessert. read more
Visited on a Saturday afternoon around 2-3 pm and surprisingly there was no line. They still had all their items available, so we got the ones we wanted to try: raspberry, lemon, and strawberry. Let me tell you, these three came out to $42, which is a bonkers if you ask me. Unfortunately, we were disappointed with how they tasted. The raspberry had a thin white chocolate layer with a whipped cream-like filling and raspberry-lime center (2.5/5). The lemon had a thicker white chocolate layer with a whipped cream filling and lemon-basil flavor (1/5). The strawberry, which was the best, had a thinner white chocolate layer with a whipped cream filling and strawberry purée like in strawberry lemonade (3.5/5). All were topped on little shortbread-like cookies. The place itself is very pretty with lots of seating and people working or hanging out. I wouldn't come back for the desserts but might try the drinks next time. Definitely overrated, but the workers were nice. read more
Day 2 of Soft opening arrived at 7:45 AM since the place is literally 5 mins away from my house. Located in the previous McDonalds that had been inhabited in years. Now Layered is a total transformation of what it used to be. It is very clean very modern well lit and can serve as a place of relaxation. However the morning rush is chaotic. There is your clear beautifully well let cold case displaying all the desserts with Labels above for desserts. Basic labels with names and no prices. Currently priced at $9.40 per dessert. Decided on the cloud matcha and two desserts from the display the vanilla brulee and yuzu dessert. I ask the cashier if she knew the difference in flavor between the yuzu and lemon dessert but she said she wasn't sure since she had only tried the lemon. After ordering it took a while for my beverage I'm pretty sure it was a learning curve because I saw the guy making my beverage literally twirl the stirring spoon why trying to figure out how to build my beverage. I was given my desserts in the meantime but was not offered a bag especially since they had asked me for here or to go. Overall: Cloud Matcha Latte $7.10 for a 20 oz no additions just as is.. basic matcha faint if any blueberry and cloud aesthetics must have been their marshmallow fluff. (please dont justify everyone's matcha...this is going to show me if you understand matcha's preparation) Vanilla Brulee- I get it "layered"...notes of vanilla. but i crave a textural difference between the layers I guess if you have a trained palate you can identify all the flavors being reflected but if not its just mostly just a creamy mousse like texture. Yuzu & Limoncello: I get a tartness and that's it. not even a strong tartness just a hint of tart . Now if you got this far in the review... let me say this.. is there a chance I ordered the most basic items on the menu? Possibly however if the items I ordered were not your best then there is room for improvement. Layered has potential lets see if they can keep up with the hype. read more

I know they are still in their soft opening phase but I was not impressed. Not with the desserts, not with the drinks, not with the price and not with the customer service. The only thing impressive is how nice the desserts look. The taste is nothing special. Also after waiting in a long line which I definitely had no issue with an expected, the cashier told me AFTER I paid and ordered that our order was going to take 15 to 20 minutes. Might be wise to tell guests this before they order because I would have left. I've had many tiramisu lattes before and this one here was not good. Very watered down and very little flavor. My son got the non caffeinated pistachio latte and it was awful. I like sweet things but this was way too sweet and did not taste like pistachio. This place is very much overhyped and not worth waiting. Also I paid almost $45 for two drinks and two desserts if they were worth it then no issue but not worth it at all... read more
I found out about Layered from social media, and decided to go with my family one weekend. Before I visited Layered, I checked the website where it shares the time of the the daily drops. From Google Reviews I learned how people get there no later than 30min before the drop before they sell out. I do agree with other feedback that there could be more information on the website, as it only states the daily drops - no info on the menu items or prices. My family and I got there a little after 11:30am. There was already a line that wrapped around the entire store (and the store is quite large with a lot of seating). The staff at the registers started accepting orders at noon, and by the time we got to the register and got to pick which pastries we wanted it was 12:30pm. All of the pastries that resembled fruit were gone except for exactly 2 raspberry pastries, so we got one of those and the cafe au lait pastry. I preferred the cafe au lait pastry. The flavors reminded me of tiramisu; it was bigger than the raspberry pastry and $5 less, and it was essentially a mini cake. The raspberry pastry was good too, but wasn't as tasty; it was mostly cream that lacked flavor with some fruit filling in the center. It was a soft exterior, and the reddish pink hue was very light/not saturated. The lower part of the pastry wasn't colored all the way and some white of the cream peeked through, which was disappointing for a pastry priced at $14. These pastries-resembling-fruit seem to be trending in many major cities, and I wonder if Layered is just trying to catch on the trend... It's certainly a fun and trendy spot to visit at least once in the area; but the daily drop system is difficult to navigate and only allows those who have (a lot of) time on their hands to enjoy and order what they wish. read more
We got to Layered around 11:45am for the 12:00 pastry launch and there was already a line of 50+ people ahead of us. Just a heads up--during launch times they aren't taking regular drink-only orders, so plan accordingly. There's also a limit of 2 fruit desserts per person (other pastries are unlimited). The fruit series is definitely the main draw. Each one is encased in a delicate chocolate shell with mousse and a jammy center: * Lemon - A muted citrus, not too sour. The chocolate and mousse round out the tartness, and if you manage to get biscuit in each bite it really balances the texture and weight. * Raspberry - My favorite. Super thin chocolate shell with semi-sweet mousse and a tart raspberry jam center, all sitting on top of a crunchy biscuit. The biscuit really helps ground the airy mousse and jam. * Mango - Very floral mango flavor, with the thickest chocolate shell and the most jam filling, set on a thin cake base. Drinks were a nice pairing. I got the Yuzu Lemonade Espresso Tonic, which last time they completely botched but thankfully this time was made properly and refreshing. The Lemon Earl Grey Spritz leaned more towards lemonade with just a whisper of earl grey--good, but I personally wanted the tea flavor to come through stronger. Overall, it's clear why people line up--these are intricate and thoughtful desserts that balance tart and sweet really well. Just be ready for the crowd and the wait if you come during launch. read more

Recently we have been going around trying sweet from different bakeries. Our main go to has been TLJ. Layered is from the same family of Chateau at Chantilly. My son had the Tiramisu Latte and he mentioned it was a good bland of sweetness and coffee with good flavor. We took the sweets - cafe au lait and vanilla brûlée home. Both were good but I prefer the brûlée more as the au lait has an aftertaste. read more

This review is solely based on my opinion of their desserts! My friend went right when they opened and brought some desserts to share! The desserts were good and aesthetic, but I don't think I would wait 1-2 hours for them.. My favorite of the three cakes was probably the strawberry cake! I just liked how it wasn't too sweet. A close second was the mango cake, because of its tartness! The new matcha peach mousse was pretty good too, but the matcha flavor was a bit too bitter for me read more

For a soft opening, I think it was really good! and that it'll continue to get better. The desserts were really good, we got the cheesecake, and it wasn't overwhelming sour at all! In fact it was just RIGHT. The drinks were delicious, but I got there when some of the drinks were out so I'll come back for another visit to try the others. As for the services, all of the workers were super nice, and they gave suggestions whenever we asked. They were really soft spoken and very patient too. The area was super cozy, there are seats everywhere. Even when there's a long line, it doesn't feel crowded and that's a big plus. read more
Layered is amazing!! And totally worth the hype. We arrived before 11:30 to line up for their 12pm noon bakery release. The lines were insane but for good reason. Mango, lemon, raspberry? Those aren't real fruits--they're beautiful fruit-shaped desserts! Some don't look like fruit but still have a nice shiny glaze (chocolate). They have a nice shell texture which is so satisfying to cut open with a fork and layers of cream and fruit. My favorite was the mango but honestly all were so so good. The chocolate was a very rich chocolatey. To make waiting in line more interesting, they also had a pianist playing while people lined up for the baked goods to come out! She took song requests and played themes from Howl's Moving Castle, KPop Demon Hunters, etc and Bruno Mars songs. (Her insta handle is @meiapiano). Everyone was very nice, so there was a very friendly atmosphere with the piano and the STUNNING desserts. read more
As a connoisseur of pastries, this place is completely overrated. They got 3 stars because of the quality of the products used... but it wasn't worth the 2.5 hour drive to get there. The flavors were mediocre and the customer service was subpar. We got there around 7:30am. No line. No wait. Pastry cases were pretty empty. We got one of everything that was there with the exception of the coffee flavored one. So it was 5 items, 2 coffees and a chocolate milk and it was $100. The place is cute. I will give them that.. but i won't ever have to go back and will be fine with that. It was for the experience. read more
I've been to Layered on two separate occasions -- drinks a couple of weeks ago, and desserts just a few days ago -- and wanted to share my honest thoughts. On my first visit, I tried the Kyoto Latte and the Cloudberry Matcha. The Kyoto Latte leaned very sweet, even after asking for less sweet. The espresso itself was decent, but the balance of the drink felt a little off. The Cloudberry Matcha was recommended, but I could barely taste the matcha or blueberry, and it mostly came through as vanilla milk. The matcha isn't hand-whisked to order (which makes sense for a café), but overall the flavor wasn't as distinct as I had hoped. On my second visit, I tried a few of their desserts. The lemon pastry had an off flavor, so I couldn't finish it. The mango pastry was my favorite of the bunch, though the fruit inside wasn't fully ripe and came out a bit sour. The matcha lavender had a nice layered look but was light in flavor -- I didn't really get much matcha or jasmine, and the texture wasn't my personal favorite. Overall, the desserts were pretty, but I found the flavors and textures less satisfying than expected. When I came around 4:30, the line was still quite long, so there's definitely excitement around the café. I know it's still their soft opening, but since it's been almost a month, I was hoping for a bit more consistency. I do think they have potential, and I'd be open to coming back once things settle in more. read more

They are currently in their soft launch so if you are coming for a bakery item be prepared to wait. I got there at 4:30 and a line was already there. Restock was 5:00 and so I wasn't actually sitting down to eat until 5:30. I got the lemon dessert and a plain matcha. I don't love the matcha- it has a strange after taste. I did enjoy the lemon dessert and I appreciate that it was very lemony. It's layered and has stuff inside. It was expensive though at $13 some. There is seating inside and outside of the bakery with tents for the outdoor spaces. There is a parking area right in front and around the building. If you just want to go to try their drinks, you won't have to wait in the long line. Employees are very nice and if you have allergies you can let them know and they will let you know what desserts you can have. This review only pertains to their drinks since I didn't have the patience to queue for the limit of 2 baked goods although the pictures from other reviewers looked scrumptious. It was nice that although I arrived half an hour before the next dessert drop and already a massive line was forming that they still encouraged people who were just getting drinks to go ahead. The blueberry matcha cloud I ordered was aesthetic and I liked how I could customize what kind of cold foam to put on top but since I am used to the tall billowy cheese foams on bubble tea the foam I got today was underwhelming. Also since it was an iced drink there wasn't actually that much liquid to the drink. Again coming from a bubble tea background I missed being able to customize the sugar level and the ability to specify less ice or no ice preferred. I stopped by while in the area to finally try their famous fruit pastry. Spoiler: I didn't get one. Here's how it went. I arrived at 3:50 PM. There was no line yet, and I was told people usually start lining up around 4:25-4:30. Since I had time, I ran to Safeway nearby for groceries. By the time I got back at 4:22, the line had already started. The wait wasn't bad, and they actually began putting out pastries a little before 5 PM. I reached the counter at 5:11, only to find that the fruit pastries were already gone. They were out of stock when there were about 4 people in front of me. So they was close when they ran out. I ended up with the matcha cake instead. It had a strawberry jelly layer in the middle and was not overly sweet. Quite good, just not what I came for. The place is quite modern with a big seating area inside. The staff seemed well trained to answer questions and handle a big crowd. Pro tip: If your heart is set on the fruit pastry, you need to be at the very front of the line. They're extremely limited, and everyone else is out of luck. Unless you also want drinks or other pastries, it's probably not worth waiting. I wish I had known that beforehand. read more

So many fruit-shaped desserts! We tried the mango and the raspberry and preferred the mango -- it was a good balance of sweet and tart. However, the raspberry dessert was mostly mousse and needed more fruity filling. Our drinks were also on the sweeter side. read more
I know folks have been waiting in anticipation for Layered...rightfully so. With any new establishment, be patient and kind as they settle into a new rhythm. I went on a Friday afternoon and had some work to do. The ambience is lively and there is definitely a lot of space. If you're taking meetings etc., or trying to catch up with friends, it might be a tad bit too nosy for you. I had no issues ordering drinks. Because of the overwhelming response, I know Layered has been fine tuning their process. I was in line for the 5PM drop around 4:30 pm and just used this time to catch up with friends. They limited it to 2 pastries per person! The ordering process was smooth and they didn't make you feel rushed. In terms of the pastries, it is delicious and worth trying! If you tend to prefer authentic fruit flavors, get the following: - Mango ( has mango chunks in the filling) - Raspberry If you prefer tart flavors, get : - lemon - yuzu limoncello ( more muted than lemon with more cake bites to it) If you prefer decadent flavors, get: - vanilla brûlée ( this is a strong sweet flavor and would be good to balance a fruit pastry) - matcha Jasmine( if you enjoy the flavors of a strawberry matcha latte, this one is for you!) Definitely made with thought and care! If you lack patience, my general sentiment is wait for the newness to die down! I see the other reviews and I see we no longer give grace to new local businesses. This is why we can't have nice things. This place is definitely trying to serve high quality coffee and desserts. The aesthetics are classy and definitely somewhere I can see myself meeting up with a friend to catch up and enjoy some pastries when the lines calm down. The mango dessert sold out while I was in line so we got the vanilla pastry and pistachio pastry. We tried the Kyoto latte which was a dessert in itself. Then the matcha pandan latte which was authentic matcha. Next time I want to try the mango dessert and the blueberry matcha and the lunch menu. I know it's going to take a few months for the hype to calm down. I'll be back in the future. read more
As many other Yelpers have mentioned, Layered is still in their soft opening phase and very much still figuring out some details. They run out of their pastry stock extremely quickly. Apparently yesterday morning they sold out of everything within the first 30 minutes of opening. Based on their social media pages, they are trying to address their inventory Also as others have mentioned, even drink orders take awhile so be prepared to wait a little. My pandan matcha was watered down and didn't have much matcha in it (I watched them make it. The large didn't have any more matcha than the small size.) I enjoyed my tiramisu latte a lot more - it's on the sweet side though so keep that in mind. Pastry wise, I really did enjoy the mango cake, it's very tasty! It's a "personal" sized cake and pricing is a bit steep so this may be reserved for a treat yourself kinda day. (I'm still yet to try my matcha jasmine pastry.) I really want to be optimistic that Layered will sort out these details for their grand opening. Following my husband's suggestion, we decided to check out a new cafe for some morning coffee to check out a new trendy spot in City of Fairfax. Sadly, my experience wasn't the best. Let me be honest. The cafe had a modern aesthetic and a simple/spacious interior, but what really put me off was spotting broken table pieces stuffed under the side bar where all the trash and used dessert plates go. Another disappointment was seeing other customers walk in, excited to find a variety of colorful high quality desserts, only to leave after discovering the dessert display case was empty. We observed that many desserts were available for takeout, and they seemed to sell out in under 15 minutes whenever a new batch was put out in display case. Moreover, the espresso bar could really use some experienced baristas. I noticed two baristas struggling to keep up with the morning rush for espresso drinks. It made me question why other staff members weren't trained to assist during slower times, like refilling the espresso beans or preparing cups, so the baristas wouldn't be overwhelmed. Having been a coffee shop manager myself, I know it takes time for baristas to get into a rhythm and learn where everything is, but it was tough to watch the tickets piling up and delays happening at the espresso bar. Definitely need a better system in their management. Their soft opening hours could definitely be shorter than 7am-9pm. Just thinking back on my experience and observations, I really wanted to enjoy this place, but it would be tough for me to even give it 2 stars. read more
IF YOU'RE LOOKING FOR THE VIRAL FRUIT DESSERTS, HERE'S THE SPOT * Price: Espressos and drinks range from $4 to $7 and desserts are on the pricier side at $9 to $14. * Food: I ordered the iced Pandan Coconut Matcha Latte and the Matcha Jasmine dessert. The drink was very filling and not too sweet, which was perfect for me since it had a strong matcha flavor. The dessert looked really heavy, but taste wise it wasn't too sweet and the filling was light, like light milk/fresh cream. The Matcha Jasmine also had a surprise red filling that was really good. * Cleanliness/Setting: Very minimalistic industrial vibe with plenty of seating. There's also outdoor seating with wood and brown tones. Great long table for studying with outlets, plus a side waiting area. * Service: Very friendly despite how busy it was during the soft opening. One of the workers behind the glass recommended the Vanilla Brûlée dessert as her favorite so I'll definitely try that next. read more
7/14/26: i got the kyoto latte and lav lemonade. i enjoyed both drinks. the kyoto was my drink for the coffee shop and the lav lemonade was my emotional support drink to sip throughout the day. the kyoto is espresso, condensed milk, and reg milk. the service was great- the barista handed me both drinks and told me each name. only a 2 second interaction but i appreciated it more than "Number 13!" i did not get any pastries or desserts because i was nervous they looked too good to actually taste good. the fruit shaped desserts look like inn at little washington desserts ive had so it def wouldve put too much pressure on layered! i liked the cafe space- lots of space for people to do work on a laptop or chat with friends. i only had an hour because i was waiting for my teen to get out of a beauty facial appt across the street, but i def couldve spent more time at this cafe! ill be back soon. read more
