    French Onion Soup
    Marty T.

The French onion soup was most excellent and the bread pieces inside soaked in the best flavors. The salmon tartare was great and the crisp greens accompanying it were a perfect serving vessel for it. The crème brûlée was perfect and the scallop risotto came with large scallops quartered to make it more bite sized and manageable. So glad I returned to this spot I had a chance to check out in March.

Walking into the restaurant - i thought I was stepping into a Skittles "taste the rainbow" commercial - but the vibe of this place is bright and the charcuterie and cheese plate was just as colorful here. Friendly staff plus don't miss the decor of the men's room! Fun visit.

Another great experience last night on an exceptionally busy summer Saturday. Service is typically always reliable though our server yesterday was particularly professional, warm, and understated. To switch things up, we did skip the escargot though after some misses at other spots recently, Le Dip is the only place in the area where I will continue to order. The tuna carpaccio was light and bright and the crispy artichokes were fantastic. Next time we'll add the escargot back into rotation and share a steak au poivre, which my husband had last night. We did after dinner drinks to round it out: amaro and ratafia, and we never felt rushed to finish up. The summer vibes were high and everyone was out - dates, groups, and families alike.

Steak frites: steak is small but well cooked. Frites were crisp.

Quite a famous and historic restaurant. In DC, so let's try it. It definitely stands out as you approach it and you enter a very happening bar area. Very loud and electric atmosphere. They have a nice selection of cocktails and beer. The salade verte was artistically presented with radishes and a nice vinaigrette. It was topped with green beans which seemed a tad odd. French onion soup was a must try. It had a nice cheesy crust and croutons soaked in the soup. So classic and very tasty. The steak frites was also classic. The frites were tasty and crispy and the steak was cooked well. The steak was slightly small. The roasted salmon was cooked perfectly--very moist and a crisp skin. The fava beans and pea sauce was very creamy. The trout amandine was also cooked well with crispy skin. FYI It is cooked in a ton of butter. We did not order any of the dishes suggested by our waiter LOL, he steered us to the most expensive entrees. His service was quite good, perhaps a tiny bit snooty.

Wow, what a fantastic spot. Visited last week with coworkers and had such a great time. We sat on the patio and the place was packed even on a Monday night, which says a lot. Pablo took amazing care of us, super kind, knowledgeable, and his recommendations were spot on. I got the Kir 75, a mix between a Kir Royale and a French 75, and it was SO good. One of my coworkers and I shared the warm shrimp salad and the steak frites, both delicious. The kitchen even split the dishes for us beforehand which was such a nice touch. Also, the bread basket while you wait? Dangerous levels of good. Definitely coming back next time I'm in DC.

I went to this little bistro for lunch and so glad I was able to check it out! The flavors were outstanding. It truly felt as if I was transported to a little bistro in France. I was a solo diner and felt perfectly cared for. The food came out in a timely manner, I was not rushed, and was so happy with the quality of the food, especially given the price. The soup was unique and creamy, with a nice rustic but delicate flavor. The artichokes were perfectly crispy and so light! The aioli it came with was spot on. The fries were crispy and thin, a classic fry but cannot go wrong. One of the stars though, which is unexpected, was the free bread basket?! There was a cranberry nut bread and it was unlike anything I've ever had. Sweet and perfect with some salted butter. Not to mention, all the bread was so soft and fresh! The inside is quite large and busy, so I would recommend a reservation. The inside is beautiful and the interior decor really accentuates the French aesthetic. Truly a gem and happy to add one of their complimentary matchbooks to my collection.

Loved this spot! Open late (midnight) and definitely serving up French vibes! Friendly hostess, seated immediately on a Friday night, and sat on the outdoor patio for people-watching. We had already eaten some stuff earlier so we went with a shrimp cocktail, green salad and fries. My husband ordered coffee which was delicious and piping hot. We also ordered a Pot de Crème but after waiting 20 minutes for it we just asked for the check. Service was slow and not attentive. Felt like being in France. lol. We would still come back.

@lediplomatedc warm shrimp salad (of course) & Roast Beef with horseradish cream, on caraway baguette --- impeccable service, and vibes as usual it's very kind of them to split portions and plate separately for sharing!

Second time here. Food was great and so was service, tried the burger for the first time. I liked it but I liked the steak frites more from last time. Only feedback was long wait time for bathrooms, seems like they need more. Went twice and both times had to wait 5+ minutes.

What incredible experience. I loved the food, the service was great and the space omg so beautiful. I love how the areas of the restaurant has a different vibe like the green room area vs the main area everyone eats at and the outdoor space that gives cafes style similar to paris. I highly recommend you won't disappointed. Best solo date. Tips /info: -They have complimentary bread they will serve you with butter. - water ( tap is free) and bottle still or sparking is $9.00 fyi. I Ordered: Country Chicken Club Sandwich that comes with fries 10/10 Ice Vietnamese coffee ( had with almond milk) 10/10 Their creme Brulee 10/10

Iconic DC restaurant with a beautiful ambiance and decent brunch! I've been coming to Le Dip for years and the quality and service is always very consistent! I don't think their brunch is the best in the city, but their bread basket (don't miss the cranberry slice) and espresso martinis will always be legendary. For brunch this time, I ordered the Gruyère Omelet. Simple and did the job! Loved the crispy potato's on the side.

It was our first time at Le Diplomate and the restaurant is quaint, with a rustic French charm. Initially, the service was super slow and it felt like 15 minutes went by without a greeting from our waiter or any water. However, this got better later on and our waiter eventually became very attentive. We ordered the escargot, which paired really well with the complimentary bread especially if you spread out the garlic butter too. I ordered the mussels as my main entree and my husband ordered the warm shrimp salad. For $27, it was a great deal as my plate of mussels was loaded - I shared a lot of them with my husband but still felt very full! The mussels also came with a side of fries that were nicely thin and crispy. Overall, a little pricey, but a good experience and I recommend stopping by if you're in the DC area.

In town for business and heard great things about this place. You'll need reservations because it's so popular but do make a plan to visit! We started with the tuna carpaccio, the cheese plate and the escargot. The escargot was delicious it was my first time trying it. We ordered the roasted scallop risotto, duck Ala orange, and mussels! The dessert was delicious!

The best of both worlds-You can dress up or dress casual. My boyfriend and I have done it both ways the two times we've been there. It's always a nice mix.

I can't get a table for Saturday night, is it worthwhile to go with a date and eat at the bar? Do many people do that? I haven't been to the restaurant before...

I think that there's no guarantee that you'll find a seat, but if you are willing to try go for it. Otherwise, just make a reservation nearby like at Matchbox as Plan B.

Can I get a table for saturday brunch without reservation?

You can but it will be difficult and there will be a wait!

Thankfully we ended up at the Unconventional Diner and it was perfect for satisfying everyone in the group!! We were all able to get tasty drinks- from n/a Hibiscus Citrus lemonade, white wine, a cinnamon toast old fashioned (what? A cereal inspired old fashioned, yes please and it was fantastic!), and a Bourbon basil smash. Then the crew settled on some food-the waiter was patient with the questions and contemplation from the table (thank you!). We started with the SKILLET CORNBREAD with Habanero Honey Butter | Sea Salt (v) And that was melt in your mouth cornbread. Damn. Real cornbread seems hard to come by any more and this is the real deal. And the honey butter and flake sea salt-can't go wrong. I'm a spice weeny-for reals-and this was incredible. It's a MUST get. Across the table we had two of the double cheese burgers (I warned, we have a lack of adventurous eaters) -and they both said the burgers were the best they've had. I had the Philly French double dip, with horseradish cream and caramelized onions-so fantastic-the roast beef was melt in your mouth and the broth was the perfect saltiness. Our fourth got the fried chicken sandwich and really loved the dill pickle slaw that came with it, and the chicken was not over cooked and not raw-perfect! We all had fries with our meals, the thinner kind with light seasoning and none of us could stop eating them, even when we were clearly full, the fries just kept disappearing.

We were originally drawn in because we were excited to try their homemade Pop-Tart! Accommodating & Kind: Our waiter was a very nice gentleman. The kitchen was more than happy to make small adjustments to our orders for dietary needs, which we deeply appreciated. Kudos to the Staff: The waitstaff does a phenomenal job, especially considering the clientele. This area tends to attract a lot of pompous professionals, and we witnessed customers being incredibly rude to the staff on two back-to-back visits. A Note on the Crowd: For example, we were in on a Thursday afternoon and watched a large group of business professionals completely ignore their server. They wouldn't even acknowledge them or say thank you. It felt like olden times, where the staff were treated like servants to a king or queen and were just expected to take abuse. It was really bad. A Quick Note on the Checkout Process Rushed Payment: The payment process felt a bit rushed. The server hands you a small payment machine and quickly pushes you to complete the transaction right then and there. Keep an Eye Out: We aren't the type of people to scrutinize a bill closely--if it's right around the expected amount, we don't worry about it. However, the lady at the table right before us was loudly complaining about a service fee on her bill, and she ended up not leaving a tip at all because of it. Combined with how fast they push the payment machine on you, it might be worth taking a quick second to look over your total if you are the type of person who likes to verify the fine print. Come on people, do better! Overall Impression It is an expensive spot, but the food quality, cleanliness, and excellent service from the waitstaff make it worth a visit. I sat at the bar and the bartender was friendly but busy restocking as it was towards the end of the day. I had the cheery old fashion as she promised it was one of their stronger drinks. I didn't find this to be true, it was actually overly sweet and tasted more like syrup. The second drink I picked was the bourbon bash. I thought this one would be sweet as it's made with different juices but it was actually on the stronger side. Definitely stronger and better than the Cherry old-fashioned. To snack on I went with the steak and cheese, eggrolls and bacon, blue cheese brussels sprouts. The egg rolls were great. Lots of flavor and the texture was spot on. The brussels sprouts were good for the most part. They did go a little overboard with the blue cheese for my tastebuds. My second visit was for a late breakfast. I started with an Irish coffee by recommendation of the bartender. It was a great way to start the day. It was strong enough but with the right balance. My breakfast plate didn't meet my expectations. My eggs were too running, bacon was chewy, toast was stale and the hash browns were only cooked on one side. I did ask for them to be crispy. I picked at it enough to curb my hunger.

That said, a couple missteps that should not have occurred took this review into the negative realm. Let's start with the positive. This appears to be a great new addition to the neighborhood, and I hope it is supported. The appetizers were delicious and nicely presented. The pistachio feta with grilled pita was tasty and interesting. The halloumi with orange marmalade was as well. The hostess was engaging and friendly. The atmosphere was calming with a touch of casual refinement. One of the entrees was delicious (the scallops and grits). I'd order all three items mentioned so far, again. The negative. The second entree was the short rib. It was tender and.... Wow, way too salty. A shame because it was otherwise well cooked and nicely plated. But whoa. When the hostess came by, my girlfriend kindly said it was a bit salty. I "refined" her answer and said she was being nice, but it was very salty. The hostess went to note this for the kitchen (a positive for her), and because we are on the first floor outside the kitchen window I heard the conversation. The chef responded that he knew what had happened. Earlier when preparing the short rib someone (in his words) blasted it with salt. What this tells me is that they knew they'd made something close to inedible but served it anyway. At the end of our meal we had leftovers of the two apps and the short rib. We asked for a bit of extra pita to take home and they provided. Then the bill arrived. Not only was there no adjustment for the inedible short rib, but they charged us $2 for the pita. The least they could have done was just given us the pita. Ah well. Those two missteps; 1) serving a known and improperly prepared entree, and 2) not doing something to make good when reported, have led to this sadly negative review for a place that could and should have gotten a positive one. Hopefully someone there will see this, and the experience and review will be a learning opportunity that will help them thrive.
