Being back in the area, we got the opportunity to visit Le Herisson Cafe and try their pastries. The cafe had a super cute and cozy vibe and we were promptly helped after one customer in front of us. We did come here in mid-afternoon on a Saturday afternoon close to their closing time, but I'm so glad that there were still a few pastry options to choose from! Uh oh...I'm in trouble! I have no idea how I found this hidden gem but I am 50% happy I did and 50% wish I never did! I cannot stop thinking about the almond croissant. It was super fresh and perfectly flaky and crispy with just enough filling that was not too sweet and just the right almond flavor. I can't wait to go back for another one. It was before noon and I got the last one so definitely a place to get up and go to early. I also got a peanut butter cookie and it was ok. They don't have a full espresso drink menu which would be nice but that's not a deal breaker for me. I'll try one of their matcha drinks next time, they looked legit. The only thing that would have made my experience better was if the lady taking the orders was a little "sweeter". She was not mean or anything but just very short, impersonal, no smile and in a rush. Always love coming to this place! There is always something new to try! If you want something savory and like curry flavor, try their Japanese Curry bread. Other savory items we love are the Popeye (with egg, bacon, and spinach), and Ham and cheese croissant. If you like blueberries, the blueberry custard donut is a must try. The dough is light and airy, the custard is not overly sweet, just right! Yum!! If you want something to drink and like green tea, give the Hojicha latte a try! We enjoy this drink hot, but iced is good as well. It is a green tea with a more nutty flavor, but it isn't green in color, so don't be shocked. This cafe has the cutest themed decor, with little hedgehogs tucked in all over the place. The pastries - beautiful to look at, wide selection of both savory and sweet, unique types/flavors, AND delicious! I tried two pastries and a tea latte. All were delicious! A tiny , cozy space where the bakeries are world class and come in an overwhelming multitude of varieties, so I tried 8 of them on my first trip. The quality of the baked goods was very unexpected, and I mean that it was easily reminiscent of the best bakeries and patisseries I've had in Europe, in terms of the flakiness, fluffiness, subtleness and presentation. My husband loves this place. I'm sure he'd award them all 5 stars, but since he's not writing this review, and I am, I'm going to stick to my 3 star award unfortunately. I've tried Le Herisson's bakery items on two separate occasions now, and both times, I've found (some of) their products to be overbaked, and I take issue with some (not all) of ingredients added. For example, especially with the croissants, I think they are being overbaked, and with the chocolate croissants, why do they add such a tiny amount of chocolate inside? It's almost undetectable. If they are going to advertise offering a chocolate croissant, I expect a fair amount of chocolate to be present inside, not just a tiny squirt. (To be fair, this bakery is not alone in how they do this, but it still isn't right.) Getting back to the overbaking, this problem extends to their danish, too. I definitely don't think it's an issue of sitting out for too long... there's moisture from the fruit, but the surrounding dough, especially along the edges, tends to be brittle and/or dried out. I was quite disappointed in the croissant with strawberries and cream as it should have been so moist from the added ingredients, but the dried out / overbaked croissant detracted from my enjoyment. This happened BOTH times I purchased this item, and it was on separate occasions !! If I had to guess, I'd say they could use about 5 minutes less in the oven. I think they should play around with it because they definitely have a really good product, but it needs improvement. Another issue, with the cookies, the peanut butter for instance, doesn't taste like peanut butter to me. Not sure what's going on here.....perhaps they aren't using enough, perhaps they are overbaking. I don't know, but it needs help in the flavor dept. My favorite item so far is their apricot danish. There's enough going on with that, that I don't see or taste any appreciable deficiencies, but the rest of their items need some attention, and then, I believe this would be worthy of the 5 stars that most people have already awarded. read more

Really friendly staff! This is such a cute shop! So lucky to have this Gem in Simi Valley. I was so sad because I had to move away and landed in Simi. I've discovered Simi doesn't have a strong foodie scene, but this place has a great variety of pastries! Everything has been super yummy! One of my favorite drinks from here is the Hojicha Latte. Finally made a trip to this new establishment in town and so happy I did. Everything I ate was really nicely flakey, crispy and delicious. The Popeye, with spinach, egg and bacon, had really nice flavor. The egg was perfectly cooked and it had enough bacon to give it flavor but not make it greasy. Probably could have used a touch of salt but won't keep me from ordering again. The apple pie was definitely a favorite. It sat in the container for 8 hours and when I finally got the chance to eat it, I was worried I'd have to toast it but nope! It was still a little crispy and was perfect to eat. The filing was amazing - apple not too soft or mushy but just right and I loved that it wasn't too sweet. Strawberry custard was really great too. Again with nicely crispy and flaky croissant with fresh strawberries, nice custard and cream. The bakery is really nice and modern inside with about 6 small tables with 2 chairs at each. It was clean and inviting; I wish I had the time to eat my goodies there. Will definitely be back to for more baked goods and to try the matcha drinks. read more

I'm only disappointed that I just discovered this place after it's been open for 2 years. Hidden in a Simi strip mall, the quality and care that clearly goes into her pastries is unmatched. I brought home 6 different items and my picky eaters loved them all. Love the Japanese French influence and so many options. Yes, it's closed 3 days a week and if you don't get there earlier in the day they might not have what you want anymore...but I think that speaks volumes that they don't overproduce, sell what is fresh and take the proper time off as bakery hours are long days. Another bookmark bites the dust! I've been attempting to try Le Hérisson for quite sometime but the location in Simi just isn't convenient for me. Finally with a day off I made my way to this little bakery in the Stater Bros shopping center. Talk about some tough decisions to make when looking at all of the yummy goodies behind the glass. Everything looked so good and tbh, reasonably priced. So I ended up with the orange/cranberry/white chocolate muffin, the chocolate banana Danish, and the chocolate croissant. Overall it's difficult to describe how delicious each of those pastries are. I mean collectively, they all tasted amazing and had light, flakey crusts. The pastries weren't too overly sweet or heavy but still satisfied my sweet tooth. Truly impressed with the products. I've got a slice of chocolate pie waiting for me after dinner so I'm looking forward to digging into that. Assuming that goes well, Le Hérisson will be seeing me on a more frequent basis. read more

Extremely undervalued gem of Simi Valley! The baked goods here exude experience that can only be described after taking a first bite. The croissants alone have that buttery flakiness that is so uncommon these days. I'm not a big fan of quiche but the popeye (spinach, bacon, and egg) is amazing! The cookies are a little too crumbly for my liking but the flavor keeps me from leaving one unfinished. The staff are polite and have a realness to them which is appreciated. The interior has a cute hedgehog personality that my wife and I love! The parking isn't terrible as it shares space with the stater bros plaza so a nice treat after groceries might be the new trend for my house.
