Unfortunately, the flavor doesn't live up to the presentation. Every macaron tasted exactly the same -- just different colors with barely any flavor at all. The staff claimed they were made by a "personal chef," but it's pretty obvious they're mass-produced, shipped frozen, and thawed before being put out. The one bright spot was the éclair... rich and tasty... but at $6.50 for one, it was hard to savor knowing how overpriced everything felt. I hate leaving bad reviews and sometimes just don't review a place - but COME ON. The macarons here were over $2 a piece and they were not strongly flavored (you had to hunt for the taste) and slightly what I would call stale? I would say taste of refrigerator but I don't think they are refrigerated? They came straight from the display case. Granted, we weren't here during tourist season, but it is New Year's Eve, and you're selling them, so they should be good and fresh. The ones from Costco where you get 36 for $13 are more enjoyable because you haven't thrown over $2 at each one, and you don't have to hunt for the flavor. I think these were just stale? We have plenty of French cafes here in NorCal to get macarons, and Paris when we visit, of course, but this location was convenient as we walked along Prospect to the La Jolla Cave - and why not? A few extra calories for the walk. They were "fine" as my kids commented. Disappointing. We purchased mango, raspberry, pistachio, and I think vanilla was the 4th flavor. Macarons - Red velvet: worst of the batch, tasted stale - Rose: the bottom of each was hard. - Mango: tasted gummy - Raspberry: unremarkable - Lavender: much better and nice taste - Birthday cake: surprisingly the best. Nice subtle taste and great all around texture. Whole Foods makes better macarons. As does Bottega Louie (LA) and Miette (SF). Chocolates - strawberry lips: all looks. I love white chocolate but this one misses the mark, almost chalky. Strawberry taste not there - just extremely sweet. - earl grey: subtle, but good - pistachio: had more flavor, but I'm not a pistachio fan. Have had Kollar in Napa and theirs are probably the best. Overall, would not purchase again. Expensive places should deliver better quality and taste than this. Le Macaroni French Pastries at the UTC Westfield Mall, a quaint stand across from Starbucks, at the Mall's center, is nothing short of delightful! The stand is artfully staged with French macarons tiered, layered and stacked in whipped, sweetened and layered perfection! Cotton candy colored pastels in creams, pinks and greens decorated the service table behind a plexiglass pane, like a buffet of delicate desserts. The server with a light France-french accent was pleasant, accommodating and efficient. There were too many options to choose, but we settled on salted caramel, rosewater, lavender, pistachio, black currant and basil! My favorite was the black currant, which had a sweet berry taste. The marzipan and filling both had a light consistency and a melt-in-your-mouth quality that made these macarons light and refreshing. A tasty treat for an afternoon stroll! read more

We had the most bizarre experience at this shop today. TL/DR the supervisor/owner of this shop is very mean and malicious. We visited on a Saturday morning at 10:30am with our 22 month old baby and elderly father. First of all, it was very weird that there were no other customers at all while other places seemed bustling with people. We only stopped by because it was the only place with gelato that was open and our baby was whining for some ice cream. The store was run by the store owner/supervisor (a French guy named Jerome) and a new hire. Neither were very friendly or welcoming and Jerome only spoke to his employee, teaching her how to scrape every last bit of gelato off the scooper. We asked for a sample and were given it very grudgingly. We ordered a medium gelato to get 2 flavors and asked for an extra cup for our toddler, only to be told very snidely that if we wanted to get a second cup, we needed to pay for it. The vibe of the entire exchange was very negative and insulting, so we left immediately. We hung around for about 20 minutes outside the shop on a bench by the street, and my husband wrote a negative review describing our experience. Almost immediately, he received a reply on Yelp from Jerome with the same snarky reply that if we wanted 2 cups we should pay for it instead of trying to split our medium gelato. Then a few moments later, Jerome the owner/supervisor stormed out of the shop to yell at us "thank you for the review" while giving us the middle finger!! This happened on the street in public, where other passerby's could witness it. It was quite rude especially considering that we had a little toddler and her grandpa with us. We have never seen anything like this before and really cannot believe what happened. The confrontation was completely unnecessary and he made the mood very nasty on a nice Saturday morning right before the holidays. We looked up the shop online afterwards and found that it is a big chain, so it looks like Jerome might be the shop supervisor at this location. It appears that he got a phone call while this was all happening, so we suspect that management has was already seen the bad review and gave him a hard time about it. In any case, we just want to bring this to the attention of the management and to warn any other customers who are visiting La Jolla and trying to have a good time. There are many other dessert shops closeby and we usually go to the one across the street called Bobboi. There's a reason why there's always a line at Bobboi's. read more

We stopped by Le Macaron French Pastries for dessert after lunch nearby. It was a cute patisserie with an extensive menu of macaroons, other French pastries, and gelatos and sorbets. A few things caught my eye including the St. Tropez, vanilla eclair, and vanilla bean macaron. I thought the macaron was the best of the 3, and as well as it should be if it wants to live up to its name. The quality of the meringue cookie was excellent - soft and chewy. Smooth and creamy buttercream, and the vanilla flavor was bold. I could've done without the St. Tropez and vanilla eclair. The St. Tropez reminded me of a French alfajore but with custard cream instead of caramel. I was not a fan of the eclair. My husband and I have enjoyed the beignet trio (I eat the white chocolate one) and the different macarons they have. The beignets don't have much chocolate in them, but I prefer it that way. They also aren't big like your typical beignets, but more like 1-2 bites. For macarons, we really like the orange grand marnier, vanilla, salted caramel, and red velvet ones. After having dinner in La Jolla, we decided to get some dessert from here. There were a lot of macaron flavors, truffles, etc., but the eclairs caught my eye. I chose the chocolate eclair and my friend got the crunchy chocolate hazelnut bar. We wanted to eat the desserts there, but since they were closing in 30 minutes, I guess it was easier for her to box them up. The eclair was alright and I was surprised I liked the chocolate hazelnut more. It was pretty good, but nothing special about it. It was only around 12:30pm too on a rainy day, but maybe they were just really popular with that flavor. The only macaron I can say I truly enjoyed was salted caramel and it seems the flavor no one can get wrong. Black currant did not taste appealing. I can't even put my finger on it, but it did not taste natural at all to me. Almost cloying. I cannot attest for the two bubble gums ones, I didn't try them. The praline was forgettable and a little hard, and mon cheri again didn't appeal to me.
