Always on the hunt for good pho. Top of my list, in the area, is Vietnam Grille in El Cerrito. The others in the area are not as good or just ok e.g. Pho Ao Sen, Super Super Restaurant, Nong Thon. I'd say this place makes the top as well. Really enjoyed their shrimp spring rolls, I favor Vietnam Grille's egg rolls although these aren't so bad. Had my usual Pho Ga and was pleasantly surprised because normally don't like the bigger, flat noodles and really enjoyed these ones. Husband had the beef Pho which had the skinnier noodles. The Pho Ga seemed to have chicken broth versus the traditional beef broth. All in all will be back here. read more

VEGAN REVIEW: I had the veggie pho and the veggie spring rolls. The spring rolls were very basic and nothing exciting. The peanut sauce that it came with left a lot to be desired. My family actually enjoyed the peanut sauce, but I recently had some at Spice I Am in Alameda, and this one does not compare. The pho was pretty good and came with lots of veggies and some fried tofu. I liked the flavor of the broth and thought the portion was fair. Upon entering the restaurant, which was about half full, we were not greeted or seated for 5 minutes. Service was slow throughout our meal and we were not checked up on at all, so I could not get a refill of water. Additionally, one of our water glasses was untouched because it had a bug floating in it. When I finally got the attention of the waitress, I let her know. She laughed and said, "It suicided"... as in the bug committed suicide. I thought that was a really odd sentiment, especially since there was no apology. Awkward... I've been here twice and this place was good each time. The first time I came, I ordered a clay pot rice. It was nice and warm and loaded with seafood and veggies. The second time I came, I ordered their customizable pho. (You pick 3 meats) This was a great option because there's never a menu option where you can get brisket, tripe, and beef balls! That way, i'm not getting charged $2.00 extra for 4 half beef balls! (cmon, you know this is how much places normally charge..) The broth is rich and food orders come out very fast! We also ordered thai iced tea both times and it was very sweet! You'd think I learned my lesson this time and ask for it less sweet... haha. The service is super friendly here. I came to Le Pho for the first time with 2 friends, and it did not disappoint. I've been on the lookout for a good pho place in the area, and I think this is it. The broth was good and didn't make me feel sluggish and thirsty afterwards (so probably not much MSG, if any). The meat was fresh and tender. My friend and I actually split a large bowl and it was more than enough for both of us, including the spring rolls we ordered. Another plus for this restaurant is that it doesn't smell too strongly of oil and broth. I also loved the large tables and spacious seating. The servers were alert and kept our water cups full. i'm usually on the hunt for a good bowl of pho and i've always found these places that have been around for a while but never tried to visit.ive finally came here and i'm kind of miffed how i havent tried it sooner!! i was pretty hungry so i got the small combo pho, a clay pot rice combo, and the crispy pork belly. the bowl of pho was so cute haha it was literally the diameter of my hand and perfect if you want to order other things and had good chunks of premium tendon, brisket, tripe, the works. i ate the clay pot last since i kept it covered and it was earthenware so i didn't worry about it getting cold. the pork belly was also good but i wish it had some sort of sauce to dip or seasoning because it was literally just a plate of chopped little morsels of crispy goodness. i will definitely come again! read more

I've been here 3 times. I don't believe a place should be judged after just one experience. That being said this place is amazing! The key: consistency. Other places (*cough cough* garbage ass monster pho.) in the area don't have the consistency in food & service. I like to order my pho with vegetables (some places don't let you do that) & I mix it up by switching the rice noodles with egg noodles. I don't taint the broth with outside sources of taste I keep it how it is. The broth is so fking flavorful! The service wow... Came in with three friends around 8 pm on a Tuesday night. There were many empty tables so we were seated right away. Kitchen closes at 8:30 pm so glad we didn't arrive any later! My friend and I shared the pho dac biet and com bo luc lac. The pho was good. I really enjoyed the broth! Definitely get the large pho for an extra $1. The only downside is that $12 is pretty expensive for a bowl of a pho, but I guess you're also paying for the nice ambiance here. The com bo luc lac (shaking beef) was flavorful but the meat wasn't as tender as I would have liked. Portion size was decent. We were both super full afterwards. They have fresh fruit juices here as well. I got the young coconut--yummy, but unfortunately not young at all so it was almost impossible to eat the coconut meat afterwards. The watermelon juice was good but not as sweet/ripe as it should be, probably given that watermelon is out of season. Vegetarians: Unless you are a tofu lover - there are no REAL vegetable options here. When we asked if we could get the rice plate and sub veggies instead of meat the waitress looked very confused and said she couldn't make this substitution for us. 'That's cool' I thought. We ended up ordering a side of veggies and some spring rolls. The side of veggies is JUST CABBAGE!! Haha - how cheap can you get? Believe the low ratings and run! Inauthentic bun bo hue and pho. The side veggies were the most important ingredients --and yet the restaurant missed the mark. They do not provide cabbage, banana blossom or shrimp paste. In fact, they don't even know what these items are. If you've eaten bun bo hue before, it's customary to have these items complement the dish at a Vietnamese restaurant. What makes it even more upsetting is the fact that both broth flavors were so bland nor did they justify the higher price tag. The egg roll filling, on the other hand, was full of flavor but the wrapper had previously been frozen. This made all the difference in the taste and texture. The clean, bright, hip atmosphere may lead you to question the authenticity and deliciousness of the Viet food here, but don't let it fool you! I came with my boyfriend on a Friday afternoon, we were seated immediately. The seating area is really large, nothing like the usual cramped, dingy vibes I get at other pho restaurants. What we ordered: - Combo pho (#26): the boyfriend finished the large size without any difficulty, so sizes are on the smaller side here. - Rice in claypot combination of chicken, shrimp, and Chinese sausage (#52): This was a STANDOUT dish for me. The rice is more of a fried rice, and it isn't the type that forms the crispy rice on the bottom. HOWEVER....that wasn't a problem for me because the rice & toppings were SO FLAVORFUL and served PIPING HOT! My only gripe was that it could use some more shrimp in it (I think I literally counted 2 shrimps all up in there) .....I was sad when the claypot was all gone. Prices reflect the Berkeley location AKA a little more than I would like to pay, but not high enough to keep me away for long. I found this place on Yelp after hearing its name mentioned in passing from coworkers a few years ago. I ordered the vegetarian Pho earlier today for lunch, and boy did it bring me back to when I visited Hanoi, Vietnam. I'm not an expert, nor Asian American, but the food to me tastes super authentic. This is my favorite place to go to for Pho. The broth is amazing. I get the 28 or 29C with rare steak, brisket and flank. It's 10/10 to go or dine in. Came here because of the great reviews, but personally I think it's around a 3.5 star. The interior of the restaurant is very spacious, clean, and has a modern/fusion vibe to it. Service is nice but definitely on the slower end. My friend and I shared a bun bo hue and vermicelli salad with grilled shrimp and egg rolls. The bun bo hue was good but definitely not authentic (lacking the lemon grass flavor in my opinion), and the portion was fairly small too. The vermicelli salad was good! I really enjoyed the fish sauce and the fried egg rolls. I'd recommend their thai iced tea too! the sweetness is just right :) Final verdict is that if I'm ever in the area and craving some pho I'd come here again, but i wouldn't go out of my way to eat here. read more
