Lee's Bakery has a nice selection of baked goods but their claim to fame is their Custard pie. Like so many other reviewers, We have been going to Lee's for decades to get our custard pie fix. Their custard, custard/pumpkin pies are so popular, they seem to be in a perpetual "their just out of the oven and you have to let it cool and set". I think it's been decades since I have walked into Lee's and was able to get a pie that was set and a pie box without vent holes. Yes, they fly off the shelves as soon as they are displayed- better to preorder for pick up unless you have the time. As others have said, you have to give the custard pie a chance to set to get the optimal taste experience. Your patience will definitely be rewarded. Remember: you bought a delicious custard pie, not custard soup. My idea of a great custard pie is not opening a box with the filling splattered all over the inside like when you buy a beef stew plate and tilt it too much. Yeech! Over the recent years we avoid Lee's when it's too close to the holidays- yeah, those epic waits on thanksgiving days are for the determined young. It's like a Seinfeld episode. Pretty much if you don't preorder during the holidays, Wendy or Theresa will tell you no pie for you. We've seen many people get turned away. Preorder, preorder, preorder during the holidays! During Thanksgiving the line is out the door and is incredibly long! The price is now $18/custard pie. They don't have parking...you would need to look for street parking so for me, I need to get dropped off, run in and out because I hate to parallel park. I used to love St. Germaine's custard pie and was sad when they closed. Someone from work bought a custard pie from here and I thought it was almost as good. My sister-in-law suggested to try their custard pie. And I'm so glad I did! My parents who were visiting that time were able to try it too! My dad is very strict with his sugar intake but he absolutely fell in love with the custard! The sweetness was perfect. This is what I did, I skipped custard pie & got pumpkin pie elsewhere, skipped the lines, the long Thanksgiving line, that customer wait hours for, which is an island tradition. I happened to be in the area so its custard pie for dessert instead of Gau and Gin Dui. I placed a phone call to Lee's for one custard pie, fresh out of the oven, I asked the guy who answered the phone, to pack the pie since I will parking my vehicle in the loading zone real quick. When I arrived, I was the only one at Lee's, no wait indeed at 2:35 pm, my pie was packaged and I paid for my fresh custard pie, the pie cost $14.50. When I brought it home I left it to cool down and I put in the fridge for later. When it was time for dessert, I had a slice and it sort of brought back memories of the custard I had at Golden Gate Bakery in SF. I enjoyed my slice of custard pie, I loved the buttery crispy crust and the filling is just the right, custard filling is light and not too sweet, which was perfect. The pie was enough for my family of 4, we each had a slice each for 2 days. During my visit, I tried to avoid looking at the other baked goods items, as I know I am tempted to purchase more but everything looked so good, orange chiffon cake, buns, cookies, there are so many! Besides donuts, pastries,breads, items are also my weakness, I can go crazy if I don't get out of Lee's Bakery ASAP. They stay in business from the foot traffic provided by the bus stop that stops pretty much in front of the shop. The Hong Kong Buns are magical when fresh... just a light bun with butter lathered inside... similar to Nandings... but here, the rumors of their Custard Pie is the winner. I'm not a specialist on custard but I must say their version is pretty darn gud! Of course the Pumpkin pie is the objective and they did not disappoint. Anyone can make the filling, but DA CRUST! OMG, is soo buttery and delish... the only problem is getting to this place AND then getting your items! So, made a personal visit to order and pay to pick in the next couple days before Thanksgiving, I arrive after work around 3'ish to pick up and low and behold was this line snaking from inside to in front of the bank... I'm thinking, "Do I have to stand in line since I already paid?" Walk to the front and found out I do have to stand in line, even if, I already paid! WTH? So I jump in line realizing I'm parking illegally thinking was going to be a quick in and out... nope, I stood in line for over an hour! Only been here a couple of times. Lee's is known for their pumpkin and custard pies but I have yet to knowingly try either type of pie. I have gotten the Pineapple Bun on both occasions and on this past Thursday got Black Sugar as well. Both quite good. Located in Chinatown, it can make for a bit of difficulty in accessing easily but definitely worth a try. And speaking of trying...custard and pumpkin pies are future options. Hands down one of the best pumpkin and custard pies around. It's located on North King St right next door to Golden Palace Chinese restaurant. You either have to find street parking or park in a municipal lot in various areas incl Chinatown. Throughout the years my family and I would brave the crazy crowds and wait in that horrendous line just to have that delicious warm, hot out of the oven pumpkin and custard pie. This year I was too lazy to make pumpkin crunch on thanksgiving eve, so my husband was cray and waited in the 4 hour line..yes, you heard right, 4 hour line just to pick up a pumpkin and custard pumpkin pie. Each pie was hot and fresh out of the oven for $15/each. Because of covid, they only allowed a few people (2-3) at a time to order and pay. It was our very first time getting the pumpkin custard pie and it was delicious!! I'm not a custard fan at all and this was the perfect mix of both and the best part is that their pies are not too sweet at all. I knocked off a star bc the pies are a little on the pricier side and the wait is horrific on thanksgiving day. They could be a little more efficient by perhaps doing a pre-order/online ordering and maybe quick curbside pick up somewhere. Otherwise, if you're having a pie craving or need something sweet to take to a potluck, I'd definitely recommend checking this place out:).
