Last time I was at Lee's Sandwiches shop, I thought, I should had used drive thru. Because it was a mess inside. Oh boy. I was wrong. Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. It was a lunchtime at 11:30 am on Thursday. The parking lot was full of worst drivers in Houston. Trying to drive a short distance from the entrance of Fountain Square to drive thru window was the hardest thing to do. Where did all these people learn to drive?? One car took 3 parking stalls to maneuver out of his spot to exit. One car wants to get out and another car squeezed by stalled cars to get on front of every car waiting in line. Then, one car backed out and didn't look for other cars. OMG. I almost got hit. The only good thing about this giant mess was no one honked and no one screamed. I should want to get out of my car to scream. WAHT DAH FOOK YALL GETT OUT DAH MA WAY!!! Not sure how the first menu looks different from second menu. First menu showed chicken pate sandwich but when I drove up to pay. They gave us chicken pate pastry. I looked at them confused. Then, they corrected it by charging the difference and gave me part of order on the spot. I drove to second window waiting for combination sandwiches. That got me wondering why everyone disappeared behind me. Looks like they got their order and took off. The lady brought me a bag of something I didn't order. Then, say "sorry wrong person." The was the worst fast-food drive thru service in the whole wide world. I would not even bother to eat here ever again. Tina was extremely rude and not helpful at all. I asked her for recommendations but all she said that she doesn't know and told me to look for yourself. When I finally found the item and confront her she said that she won't sell for me because I'm unhappy and she walked into the back with her nasty attitude. What kind of customer service like that? Instead of apologies and accept that she couldn't help me but she treats me like I'm a beggar? The food here isn't spectacular or anything. It's okay and I've had much better Vietnamese sandwiches elsewhere (tried both combination and grilled chicken). The chicken was tough and dry. The combo ingredients were meager and got lost among the veggies. The pate chaud was pretty tasty although the meat inside was minimal (not meant to be shared). All that being said, the prices are excellent here. Very affordable. For me, Lee's excelled at drinks. I had an avocado / honeydew smoothie and it was FANTASTIC. Didn't get to try the Vietnamese coffee this time but it looked good. Would come back for a drink / pastry combo but save my appetite for one of the many restaurants in the area. Lee's Sandwiches is the Vietnamese version of Subway in that it's a place you come to when you want a sandwich, but you're not going to blown away by it. There are other far better banh mi joints in Houston, but you come here because it is convenient, has a drive-thru, and reasonably priced. The bread is baked in house and when it's fresh, it's delicious. The banh mi here are basic as far as quality and quantity of ingredients. The "Euro" sandwiches are pretty good. Basically, cold cuts on a croissant. The main thing I come here for is the iced coffee aka cafe sua da. It's rich, creamy, and gives me a caffeine boost like no Starbucks drink could ever do. Service is good for the most part in the drive thru. The order is usually made pretty fast which is impressive since they always seem to be busy. You guys, be careful when you come here. Worst place I've been to. The place was dirty and run down. Ordered a smoothie and the only thing you can taste is milk. The excuse they gave was because I ordered the smoothie with less sugar. I've frequented Lee's a few times with my girlfriend who is quite found of them, but given how many options there are for banh mi, I always leave with a lack luster feeling. There is a flow of people going in and out often leaving with a baguette or 2 , which let me be honest fresh bread is the best bread, but they are supposed to be known for their sandwiches given they adopted that in their business name. You'll for sure always see older gentleman outside reading, smoking, and playing their various table games. There has always been plenty of inside seating on each visit I can recall. The sandwiches are always on the skimpy side, highlighting the bread perhaps, which to me is to skinny to make a worth while banh mi. They don't evenly coat the bread, there is close to no innards. One single sprig of cilantro and a few thin slices jalapenos to accompany a very thin layer of cold cuts all rounded and deemed their Combination Sandwich. It was not the first location of Lee's Sandwiches that we went to, we've been to the one in Oklahoma City a few times and loved it. But this is now my favorite. It's a large and spectacular sandwich shop with absolutely wonderful Vietnamese Iced Coffee that is second to none, and some good spring rolls that are very different to the others we've had. Don't get me started a big long sexy Banh Mi sandwich. Every bite is delicious. If you're going to do a chain this is how to do a chain. Honestly the quality is so good - much like 85 Degrees Bakery - that it never really feels like you are in a chain. They use top-notch stuff and everything tastes homemade. Because honestly everything is. They have everything right and it's not like me to endorse a chain but I fully and totally endorse this one. Other top choices are nearby Nguyen Ngo who make the best Banh Mi on buttery fresh homemade croissants, and then Tapioca Place/Smootea - different style but wonderful - and the best in town, in my opinion, the Banh Mi at Les Givrals in Midtown. So after visiting Lee's about 117 times in the last few years, I can say that they have some of the best sandwiches around and are very consistent with their sandwiches. Even more consistent are their phenomenal Vietnamese iced coffees, as their milk is the creamiest most delicious Vietnamese coffee I've probably ever had. However, while they do make the very best Vietnamese Coffee, they also make one of the stingiest portions. I feel like three sips and it's gone, sort of like your boyfriend only needs three strokes and he's gone. The most recent time we even had to order a second one and ask for it with less ice. I swear it came in a cup that was smaller and yet had even more ice. Whatever - at least they didn't charge me for the privilege. I'd love to downgrade for such stinginess, especially since it's a chain, but the products are soooo good, that I can't. Speaking of not charging - you're supposed to be charged if you use your credit card for under $5 which I accidentally did this most recent time, and he said don't worry I didn't charge you for the credit card because you already spent more than $5 on your previous transaction. Delimanjoo corn shaped, creme filled mini pound cake like pastries are good when freshly made. When I used to live in Houston years ago, my friend brought me here for the banh mi sandwiches and I was hooked. It's been a while since I've been back. Yesterday we were stopping for drinks and snacks. My husband got the bottled Japanese green tea and chicken puff pastry. I got the pickled mangoes.
