I LOVE LOVE LOVE Suparossa. And now I LOVE LOVE LOVE Legno. We live down the street and Suparossa has been our go-to pizza and casual Italian place for years. Thankfully, they kept their take-out service open during their transition to Legno, I may not have survived otherwise. Let's start with the ambiance. Legno means wood, so that theme is carried throughout the entire restaurant from decor to food. There are wonderfully-trendy wooden planks and decor adorning the walls, making it very warm and inviting. They have also added a wood burning oven so they can make classic Italian pizzas and other smokey, crispy, delicious goodies. The newly-designed interior is so modern and trendy, I would love to host a party there, the bar area has these great chaise lounges and leather couches. Very hip! Service at Suparossa has always been very friendly and accommodating, and that's no different now. The same waiter had great wine and cocktail recommendations for us, and we even spoke to the owners who were super friendly and grateful for our business, sharing our excitement over the new place. The food is amazing. They completely transformed the menu (don't worry, you can still get your regular Suparossa comfort food if you order from their take-out menu). Items such as pork belly, wood-roasted octopus, mussels, butternut squash arancini make an appearance. We began our food journey with a couple of cocktails and glasses of vino, both recommendations from the waiter which were SPOT-ON. Next, I ordered the shaved fennel salad and wood-roasted octopus. Both were amazing. The salad's vinaigrette was wonderfully tangy, citrusy, and fresh. THE OCTOPUS. DEAR GOD. It's tricky to cook a good octopus, and bad versions come out tough and chewy. This was PERFECTLY cooked, so tender. Presentation was outstanding as those little delicious cephalopod legs were placed atop a cylindrical bed of pine nuts, roasted peppers and eggplant. Out of this world! My friend ordered pasta, but this wasn't your average pasta. The waiter informed us that all of their new pastas are HANDMADE. DID YOU HEAR THAT??? Her dish, the cavatelli with ricotta, was delicious and extremely filling. I also took home an order of butternut squash arancini. Talk about little fried balls of heaven. Overall, this place blew my mind. I will certainly be back here for cocktails, apps, dinners, whatever. I may just camp out by the front door because this place is so damn cool. I love it. read more

We love Suprarossa. We don't really love the changes. I love the updates the did in remodel. The new menu not so much. My wife and I took out daughters there on Saturday. We left feeling sad for the old place. The food was good, although it was $7.95 for a kids meal! All of our old favorites are not on the new menu. The service was just okay. The server brought out our daughters dishes at different times. I had the pork shoulder which was very good. My wife had the margarita pizza (which the put the basil on before baking, not very appetizing to look at). At the end of the meal after the server brought the ice cream for kids, I had to get his attention to order espresso and desert. He didn't even ask us if we wanted anything. He brought me my espresso in a very large coffee cup, even though I could see the espresso cups in from where I was sitting. After we left we remembered all of the old dishes we loved from the old place. They are no more. It was our go-to Italian place for years. We had our first date there 10 years ago and we also had our rehearsal dinner there. No more delicious bread or ministrone soup. We pretty much decided we will not be going back. Now it is some hipster/foodie place. All I want is is the old Suprarossa back. read more

This is a fantastic change for the 'hood. The wood fire pizzas are solid. The crust is thin and cooked perfectly. The simple Margherita pizza is probably their best, too. The decor is great, modern, and a welcome update to this part of "old chicago". On weekends, the bar area seems to be a real attractions for NW-siders looking to "go out" too; there's a little social scene happening here later at night. Detractors will knock this place for not being the old Suparossa. I think they're nuts. The NW side has plenty of typical Chicago pizza and pasta joints. Legno finally brings more modern italian food and decor to the area- thank you Legno for making it possible for me to visit the new millennium on the NW side! I have mixed reviews, but have been wanting to try since they re-opened with new name, decor and menu. Ist impression awesome looking place, nice diverse crowd & atmosphere, Loving it. Downhill from there. Ordered appetizer & drinks. Glass of house chardonnay, what I got was a beautiful big wine glass with I think a taste of wine, not sure, could barely see the drop in the glass. Next we got our appetizer, fried Calamari. About 8-10 soggy pieces. Service just not there, waitress just would not check on our table. She was nice enough just busy. Had to ask for water and bread. Best part of meal was the delicious bread, really it was good. Again waited so long. Finally we ordered 2 wood oven pizzas. 1 Margherita, 1 Diablo. Received 2 very soggy about 9 inch pizzas. Not good at all. So disappointed, really want to like this place. Need decent nice restaurantsvin this area. I will probably try again and try a main entree. Love this place! Newly renovated and modernized with wood and steel decor. High tops, lounge seats, booths and tables as well as quiet and happening section. The bartender is an artist and the owner is one of the friendliest I've met. I recently had my girlfriends birthday party here, we had such a great time and everyone was extremely accommodating. I made reservations for 15, and soon the party grew to nearly 30, they added tables and the wait staff was always there with food and drinks. Our waiter even managed separate checks which was appreciated and impressive. We've eaten hare a couple times now, and it's nice to have some non meat options. The arancini balls are deliciously filled with goodness. The lobster caprisi salad is exquisite. The tartufo Neapolitan wood oven pizza... Oh man. The wood roasted octopus is amazing. The drinks are great from the good old fashioned to the imaginative confection of the bar master you can't go wrong. So if you're looking for a fun hang out, get some great drinks, enjoy a delicious Italian food or partake in some live music, look no further and stop by, you'll be welcomed by a great staff. I never visited Suparossa in its past life, so I have no basis for comparison, but Legno is definitely a winner. My pal and I were pretty sweaty so we took a seat in the bar area despite the inviting patio, which I hope to visit before winter arrives and ruins my life yet again. We took advantage of Monday's 1/2 price appetizer special and ordered the butternut squash arancini and the grilled calamari to start. I sometimes fear grilled calamari because of the strong possibility it may be like eating a handful of rubber bands, but this was very good. Nicely grilled with a smoky flavor from the wood burning grill and no hint of rubber band texture. The arancini were tasty as well. I went for the crispy pork shoulder entree, knowing that I'd likely be taking half of it home with me. The pork was very tender and herbaceous. This makes way better lunch leftovers than a lot of the stuff I bring to work. My friend ordered the fennel salad and a side of the brussels sprouts and cauliflower. She was nice enough to toss me a sprout. We shared a bottle of wine with dinner, but I took note of a nice beer selection and interesting cocktails. The service was fine and our server was friendly. I will say that the amount of TVs in the smallish bar area and the loud generic pop music playing is a little incongruous with the more upscale decor and menu, but that's likely just the neighborhood and we were in the bar area, so it's not the end of the world. What to say about Legno? I dont know so lets take it apart. Looks: The place is cool. It has a very interesting dark atmosphere. Not uber inviting but it's okay. Gastropubs are cool and sometimes mysterious like that. Service: Not bad at all. Out server was Jimmy and he knew his stuff. He was perfectly attentive, chatty enough but not to the point of being annoying. Informed us about half price wine night and answered questions about the food as if it was his restaurant. Food: This is where the stars did not shine so bright. I disliked the stuffed pepper and the chicken parmesan. It was obviously frozen and fried, it tasted like it too. I did not mind my chicken avocado sandwich. The chicken was obviously precooked but at least the sandwich was tasty. The place does bring you bread with cheese and olive oil and I think that it is amazing. The verdict is that I am on the fence about this place. I am definitely intrigued about the atmosphere in the summer but for now I am in no rush to go back. read more

What a great place in Portage Park. With all of the face lifts to local fair in this hood, I was glad to see Suparossa get an upgradeas well. Kim runs the operation there and she is one sharp business woman. She also catered my September 2013 wedding through their catering arm known as C-catering. Kim did a wonderful job with our wedding. I didn't have to worry. Her and her team executed my vision and everything was perfect! Legno has a great menu which includes wood burning pizzas and regular pizzas. A great bar area with a master mixologist. Great selection of drinks and craft beers. They have windows that open to the street from the bar with live entertainment on certain nights. My husband and I had an early dinner on a Saturday and hung out in the bar after dinner. Great place to check out for the summer as they have plans for outdoor seating! read more

My boyfriend and I were visiting Chicago and on our last night in town he brought me here for my birthday dinner. We just randomly found this place and I must say this was by far the best restaurant we've ever just walked into. We sat outside on the patio it was a perfect night. warm, light breeze just very romantic. Our waiter was very charming and gave us wonderful suggestions on what to have. The grilled calamari with calabrian chilies was spiiicy but so good. The tartulo pizza with mushrooms and truffle sauce was one of the best pizzas I've had in years, just super tasty. After being stuck at home for over a year due to COVID, my partner and I decided to try out Legno for Valentine's Day. I've been passing this place for about 5 years, wanting to eat here. I made reservations and we went. We were seated and brought out waters. Ordered drinks and appetizers. At the same time we ordered our apps we placed our food order (had plenty of time to look at their limited menu). I chose the Chicken Vesuvio -- which I was told would take about 40 minutes, no biggie as we weren't in a rush. My partner chose the Linguine with clams. After having our 2nd drink, appetizers and salad, we noticed how a couple at the table next to us, that weren't there no longer than 10 minutes got their dinner order --which happened to look like ours. We flag our waitress and ask about our order as we have now been there for over an hour. She said "just a couple more minutes". About 5 minutes later she brings my Chicken Vesuvio out. I cut into it and low and behold -- raw and bloody. What a disappointment!!! I asked for a manager and I was told one would be out in a minute. 10 minutes go by and our waitress comes by to see how things were. Informed her we were waiting on a manager (that never came) and my chicken was raw and bloody. She inspected the chicken and apologized and took our plates. She asked if I wanted them to remake it, I declined and we also sent back the cold linguine and clams. Not wanting to wait another HOUR for our meal we decided not to reorder anything. First time visitor. Let's start out with the service. Outstanding. Edgar took the time to ask and memorize our names and he was very personable. They had a nice drink menu but I stuck with the classic Vodka martini. Edgar wasn't sure on the premium vodkas in stock but he promised to tell me if they didn't have Ketel One or Belvedere. Now we had a couple starters. These were hit or miss. The Grilled Octopus was a definite hit! My goodness, flavorful and seasoned well. The Zucchini Blossoms on the other hand were a big miss. I don't get why anyone would take beautiful blossoms and turn them into what looked like donut fritters. The blossom might have been in this deep fried mess, but I would never have known. For dinner, had the lobster diavolo. They did well with the seafood here - not a fishy taste in the bunch (clams, muscles and lobster) on top of a bed of fresh tasting linguini. Dessert was the gelato with chocolate cake (they called it something else but that's what it tasted like). This was a plus as well. Overall, a decent experience and I definitely will go back and request Edgar again. read more

I gotta say, I was a bit pessimistic when the local pizza place "transformed" a couple of years ago. Was worried that they wouldn't be able to strike the right note for the neighborhood - nice but approachable, a bit more upscale than their previous offerings but not too pricey. After several visits over the past couple of years, I'm VERY pleased. I've been with a "girls night out" gathering, we have gone for Mother's Day brunch, brought my folks (in from out of town), and most recently, dined with a group of about 15...half of which were kids under 12. Our waiter was FANTASTIC, really engaging with the kids, not talking down to them, but knowing that getting them fed pretty quickly would be the key to ALL of us in the dining room escaping with our sanity intact. My friend tried the shellfish - that's not my thang but she gets clams, muscles, etc. a LOT and she RAVED about these. I stuck to my pasta dish - I could have used a BIT more basil and a bit less cheese on top, but overall, very good. In the past I've had their oven fired pizza and bruchetta and other dishes and would give a "thumbs up" to the vast majority. I typically have a glass of wine, tho have had their cocktails in the past. I'd say similar to my overall review - they have hit the right note of having some interesting options for cocktails, without being too kooky or expensive. Brunch: first time here. Place is modern, clean and very cute. Randomly looked up "brunch" on my google maps and Legno popped up. We live nearby. Came here with my wife at around 11:30am, so right after they opened, and omg the food was fire. Had the Diablo omelette, wife had the chicken & waffles, both were amazing we shared each other's food. We also had bottomless mimosas for $15/ea and totally worth it, if your a drinker like us. This place has become a regular stop for my wife and I. The decor is a welcome change from the tired and dated interior of the former Suparossa, which was just kind of old without any of the charm of many old-school Italian joints. The service is also miles ahead of the old Suparossa, which was famous for lousy service and and completely screwing up your order. The food is also a welcome change, as the bland American-Italian dishes of the past are replaced with more modern and authentic southern Italian dishes and some of the best thin crust pizzas I've had in Chicago. Most dishes are prepared in the wood-fired oven, which lends are great woody/smoky flavor to the dishes. The wine list is quite exceptional, featuring a great selection of delicious and inexpensive wines by the glass, and by the bottle. They have a great selection of craft beers, and a very nice custom cocktail menu. read more

Okay- this is not a 4.5 star restaurant, people. We went back again and it was pretty awful. We had the wood roasted octopus, which came out cold and smelled FISHY. That is a sign of really not fresh seafood. Next, we had the dates... I know this was meant to be a cold appetizer, but it was like they were pre-made and then taken out of a fridge. Raw dates and marscapone make for a really gross texture. Maybe roasting them would have been better? My entree was the short rib. It was super fatty and the polenta had zero flavor. Five star restaurants are places like Topolobampo, not this place. They put little thought and effort into their food and charge just as much as places who do. Oh, and the menu was xerox copied and they we're put of several beers on their menu. Don't let the ambiance fool you. read more

Let's start with their amazing mouthwatering food; fried calamari are delicious and the marinara sauce is house made, so take that in and imagine eating that right now; we tried the lobster diavolo (see photo) it has the perfect spice to it, the pasta is full of flavor, the clams, mussels, and of course the Lobster are delicious and even though it is a big bowl, you will finish 99% (the 1% is what is left over of the mussels, clams, and lobster-since it would be a little difficult to eat that) of it because it is that good; we also tried the tartufo pizza and the prosciutto funghi pizzas, which are one of the best wood fired pizzas I have ever tasted in my life; Legno burger was quite good, I like mine well done; that's all read more

The wife and I went here today for lunch, we usually go at least once every two months. We love the pizzas, especially the Tartufo - the portobello mushrooms are great, and there's just a hint of truffle to it. The staff is great when it comes to giving tastes of beer, I like my beer and they change their draft beers often enough. They have a pretty good selection of wines. They usually have good late night specials or lunch specials. In addition to their different pizzas, we've had their gnocchi and burgers, and a few different sandwiches here, along with most of their pastas and appetizers. The food is very solid. It's more than just good in our opinion, and the prices are reasonable that getting a to-go order doesn't cost us $40! It's a great restaurant in the local community. I'd say it's worth it if you're within a few miles of the place. read more

Stopped by Legno for a late lunch on Saturday. The decor was awesome (very modern and cozy) The food was very good. We started with their grilled calamari, carpaccio, and shaved fennel salad, all were great. Then we ordered a wood burning sausage pizza (great dough) and a seafood pasta (good sauce, but the seafood could have been larger pieces). I would have gave Legno only 4 stars, but it won me over with the service of out waiter (Eddie). He was spot on throughout the meal, even sang happy birthday to my wife and comped us on the dessert. MAY BE THE BEST EXPERIENCE IN AREA!!! My wife and I stopped by for a last minute dinner date on Saturday Night and it ended up being one of the best nights we have had in a while. The atmosphere is nice, quiet and welcoming in the back and up front its more up beat and lively in the bar area. The food was legitimately amazing Italian fare. Very inspired and professional presentation. The waiter knew every detail of the menu items. The bartender is an expert mixologist. The host was very nice and accommodating....and the live entertainment, Stolie, was awesome. I can see how some people have posted negative reviews about Legno, but I think they are just working out some of the "new restaurant" kinks. We will surely be back...I have a feeling this will be our GO-TO bar and/or date night restaurant. Keep up the good work Legno!!! read more

I am upset that I have to write this review but the food served tonight was unacceptable. Started off with zucchini blossoms which had no traces of zucchini. My mother's blossom was perfect and delicious, my girlfriend's blossom had no traces of zucchini, and mine was just deep fried cheese. Prosciutto wrapped dates had potential. If they didn't cook the prosciutto it would have been much better. My girlfriend ordered the lasagna which she immediately said looked like it was Chef Boyardee. Funny thing is she has never eaten the Chef but I swear to you the sauce in the lasagna was the Chef no question about it. I actually just tried to eat my gf's leftovers and I threw the rest of the lasagna away because it's just terrible. My duck ravioli was flavorless. Really upsetting because I truly love duck. My mother's Caesar salad was probably the best dish served but she was thrown off by the anchovy garnish. Besides the food the service was impeccable. Our server Chris was not overbearing which is nice because we were deep in conversation through most of the meal. 2 stars only because of the service. The ambiance of Legno is wonderful. The decor and space are very appealing. The service has also been overall very good both times we've gone. Unfortunately, my thoughts on the food are mixed. We had mussels for an appetizer, which were very flavorful. The cauliflower and brussel sprouts side was absolutely delicious. The lobster risotto was good, but not great. My biggest issue was with the margharita pizza. It came out and immediately looked soggy. When we brought it up, the waiter told us that when you use fresh mozzarella cheese, it is going to be watery. It was so watery that the sauce was diluted to a pink color and the bottom of all the crust was soaked through and soggy. I've had plenty of pizzas with fresh mozzarella that do not have these issues. I will be back because I really want to give this place a chance. Legno used to be known as Suparossa before it was rehabbed and upscaled. We have been loyal customers of this place for years but no more. No doubt, the physical redo was first class - the place looks great and the environment is nice - BUT the food now is just awful. Mind you, it looks pretty on the plate but that is all. The pizza we ordered came burnt - literally black around edges but it was pretty. The chicken dish, likewise, was pretty but wholly uncooked and the portion was small. When they upscaled, it appears that they also decided to change their food - make it more upscale looking by making it pretty. Bad decision. In Jefferson Park, the people don't want pretty, they want good and they want it done right. Unfortunately, the management now appears to think they are located in the Lakeview or Lincoln Park areas - where pretty rules. Also, I am guessing that to recoup that cost of rehabbing, the management decided also to upscale the prices and downscale the portions. Another Bad Decision. There is a single saving grace - as far as I still know - the old Suparossa kitchen and its staff still exists to handle orders on a delivery or carry out basis. There are separate menus. My advice right now is stick with the old. In nutshell, If you want to dine in and want first class food with decent portions at decent prices, avoid Legno. With so many other Italian places in the Jefferson Park area, finding better for less is very easy. read more

I would give 0 stars. Really ruined my Mother's Day. We ordered online really early so we could get our food on time. Dinner for 5 was over $200 NOT A DROP OF ALCOHOL and it was delivered 45 minutes late was cold and rubbery for the food that was supposed to be hot and the small coleslaw that was with my full ribs order ( definitely NOT A FULL RACK OF RIBS) was the only warm thing and was pretty much inedible to boot. The small plastic container that contained some extra barbeque sauce for the ribs was melted and so the sauce was all over the food and the box that the ribs were in. We tried to call through to Legno/Suparossa when the delivery did not show...NO ANSWER and multiple attemps! We looked at the website and it showed that our order was CANCELLED but there was the charge on the card!! No call no text no email nothing and no way to find out the status! We then actually left the house to go out after that as we did NOT have another meal planned and were on our way to get Portillos through their drive thru but just as we got about 5 blocks from home we received the call and turned back. We were pretty upset and then the food was just diappointing beyond belief. The whole fiasco caused some upset in the family and so we choked down the cold tasteless flabby mess in silence. I didn't want to order from Legno but it was 3rd choice and the other restaurants I had preferred were booked out for delivery and I guess I know why now. Waste of 200 hard earned dollars, disappointing all round and just all round a full on crap experience...will not go back when they reopen..even though the in restaurant service is good this just completely ruined the restaurant for me. read more

This is a nice gastropub in the area close to home. The food is good, the service is quick and efficient. I made a reservation on Opentable and we were seated immediately with no wait. Then again, it was a random Tuesday night so I doubt there would have been that long of a wait anyway. The only thing that was a bit of a miss was the fried calamari but everything else was good. I could see myself returning sometime in the future but I am in no rush. I am interested to see what else the Portage Park neighborhood has to offer. read more

I recently had brunch here to meet my best friend here on a Sunday afternoon. The ambiance was awesome with great music and decor was really nice.The only problem was we were seated to a very noisy and loud group making it impossible to hear each other over their conversation, we asked our waitress to be moved and she right away found us a quiet booth. They were running a special for an all you can drink mimosas for only $15! And let me tell you they were nice and strong. To accompany our mimosas we ordered a queen margarita pizza and it was baked in a fire wood oven, which brought out such a great flavor to the ingredients. I also ordered a rigatoni pasta in vodka sauce that had mushrooms and Italian sausage, it was enough for the 2 of us. I enjoyed my meal so much that since I was on the way to visit family & I took an order to go and they loved it also. I was also informed they run daily specials with half offs or special entrees of the day that are not part of the menu. The main reason why I gave this place a 4 star is because the food was good but it wasn't amazing. I ordered a magherita pizza, which was good but I was hoping the sauce was a little more tasty. Service was good and prompt the waiter I had always checked in on us. I enjoyed the atmosphere as well. read more

I wanted to like this place. It's super local to me, and who can beat half price bottles of wine on Tuesdays? In the past 3 months, I've been there three times. That's almost all the times I went out without a baby. I used three of my extremely rare baby-free evenings to go to Legno. I really wanted to like it! Unfortunately, the food is really not good. The pizza is dry. I've also ordered the glazed salmon, and I am pretty sure they forgot to glaze it before scorching it. The seafood in their zuppa di mare was also overcooked. The busboy is amazing. Some of their waiters...not so much. I gave the second star for that stellar busboy. I won't return. read more

Found this place on the whim with friends! It was SO DELICIOUS! The portions were big, for example the calzone was bigger than my head! The pastas & meats were rich in flavor & drinks made to perfection! We had the chocolate cake ice cream dessert .. to die for! We're certainly going back! Check it out! read more
