The restaurant opened in 1974 as Jackie's Place, founded by NFL Hall of Famer Jackie Smith and Norman Probstein. In 1980, it was renamed Sportsman's Park after the legendary St. Louis ballpark that was once home to both the Cardinals and Browns. I was there with two friends for a little patio lunch, and I ordered the strawberry and spinach salad with salmon. And yes, #StLouisPescatarianApproved. The salad has spinach, strawberries, almonds, Mandarin oranges, bleu cheese and I subbed honey mustard dressing. Add salmon and suddenly lunch is doing exactly what lunch is supposed to do. It's very much a neighborhood institution, where people have been coming for decades and now bring their kids. Sometimes you don't need the newest restaurant in town. Sometimes you need a classic, a patio, a salad with salmon and three people who are perfectly happy to sit around and talk about food.

Three servers (including the bartender) sat at a table chit-chatting while we waited for several minutes. Finally, the bartender came around and instead of acknowledging us, she continued chatting in the corner very close to us. We had to get her attention to order and she was clearly in a bad mood. Throughout our time there, we had to keep getting her attention without her making any real attempt at actual service. On top of that, we overheard her complaining about low tips and that one way or another she would get her money. In the end, she got one of our orders wrong and added an extra drink to the check which I wonder if that was the result of the comment we overheard. My poor service experiences at Sportsman's combined with those of many other Yelpers makes me also start wondering about the quality of the kitchen...if the front of the house doesn't care why should the back of the house?

Walk in and there are plenty of tables, a couple of gathering areas, standing room narrow tables, an outdoor area, and a room off to the side. I went for the Logboat Dark Matter which I have had before in a can and wanted to try on draft. I enjoyed it very much. You know what is great?! Since they don't have food, you can bring it in yourself. Both times our group has met up here Katie's Pizza is the choice and its in the same parking lot. You can't go wrong with Katie's. Bartender is on the ball and friendly, TV's all around, not too loud so you can talk.
