During a recent trip to Washington, DC, I was exploring Georgetown and came across Levain Bakery. I ordered one of their pastries along with the ham and cheese sandwich. Pricey but a mountain of a cookie. The walnut chocolate chip is much better than the two chip. Both have a nice soft texture even if you eat it hours later, but the chocolate in the two chip is overwhelming. Really enjoyed the walnut chip. read more

I wish I took pictures of the cookie and bread I bought from here but these were one of my favorite cookies of all time! They didn't become dry or flakey even after I put them in the fridge! I love how these cookies had a slightly dome shape, making them feel extra unique! The server was very helpful in describing the flavors of the cookie, their most popular cookies and even explaining how to use/save the bread! My favorite cookie was the walnut and chocolate chip cookie but the double chocolate chip was also amazing! I tried the country bread and it was also great! I would recommend letting them slice the bread for you though! I thought I could slice it at home but once refrigerated (which they recommend refrigerating it or freezing it if you don't finish it within 1-2 days), it becomes a bit hard to cut and it also hard to get those perfect slices like you would find at the store. I went a little crazy my first time here... I bought 8 cookies so my wife and I could try all the flavors (not oatmeal raisins, gross). The size of these cookies is enormous! We love the texture and consistency, definitely a must have in Georgetown! Our absolute favorite is the classic chocolate chip and walnut. It's perfect. The other flavors were all really good as well! Suggestions: 1. More cookie options with nuts. 2. The lemon cookie needs a stronger lemon flavor, maybe add lemon zest to the top as well. 3. Is there a way to make them look different from each other? I honestly couldn't tell the difference unless they were one of the chocolate ones - which meant we just had to try them all... Levain's is always a must everytime I'm in Georgetown! By now, most people are familiar with the chunky cookies that were popularized here. I respect that they keep their menu pretty stable, despite the weekly turnaround trend most other cookie bakeries do these days. The line is almost always snaking through the building and out the door, but they do a good job of keeping things efficient. I do wish they had a deal if you purchase a set amount of cookies, since online they have packs of 4, 8, and 12; I like to buy several to freeze at home since I'm not local. The employee that rang me up was a little snarky when I asked, but hey, maybe to them dumb questions do exist? Aside from that, their cookies are always great, no matter the year or season. Quality is always consistent and the cookies freeze nicely. I usually go for the Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Chip or the Dark Chocolate Chip, and those of course didn't disappoint.. but since my SO is a fan of Oatmeal Raisin, I bought him one and nibbled on it... and that one is good too! I can't be put on to yet another yummy cookie from Levain but it is what it is. My husband I were in Georgetown and had to make a stop at Levain. We each got 2, and of course had to sample them immediately. Unfortunately the cookies were not served warm and had been overcooked and tasted dry. When Levains cookies are perfectly baked and served warm these can't be beat. However, if quality control continues to lack I can't recommend it. read more

Visiting my friend in DC for the weekend and she offered a reward for walking all the way to the cathedral and back was either cupcakes or cookies. Once I saw these cookies I knew that was my choice, and I stand by my pick! There was no line around 2pm on this Sunday afternoon, ordered a dark chocolate peanut butter chip cookie. It was delivered to me maybe a minute later, super warm and all wrapped up. We sat on the Adirondack chairs outside and enjoyed this cookie! It was soooo good but I forced myself to stop half way I was so full. I wrapped it up and saved the other half for the plane ride home and it was almost just as good not warm. But still the perfect texture and gooey and everything I wanted from a cookie! read more

Tried Levain for the first time, since I love love love cookies. We got the Two chip chocolate chip, the walnut chocolate chip, and the Raspberry bomboloncini. Both cookies were very chocolatey and weren't too sweet. We also tried the Raspberry bomboloncini which is like an Italian donut that we were told and it was very yummy. It wasn't too sweet either. Ordering was fast and relatively easy. There are tablets all around but they aren't touchscreen and you can't order from them (so a little confusing). You order at the counter and pay on tablets). The cookie was delicious and very large definitely falls apart a bit though. The latte was I ordered vanilla and my companion ordered caramel and they were both a bust. We stopped by here while walking around Georgetown looking to take a respite from the heat. Right as you open the door you are blasted with the toasty aroma of freshly baked cookies wafting straight into your nostrils! We ordered a Chocolate Chip Walnut Cookie and an Ice Latte with oat milk. The cookie may seem expensive but it is huge and chunky, loaded with gooey melted chocolate chips and healthy walnuts. The cookie isn't flat but tall, dense, and thick -- it is the size and weight of a hockey puck, I'm pretty sure you could break a window with it! The outside of the cookie is baked crispity-crunchy like a scone, while the inside is warm and soft. The crunch of the walnuts further enhances the overall texture. The chocolate chips are rich and decadent milk chocolate, and since the cookie is served warm they are melted and oozing when you take a bite. Overall, the cookie is not too sweet! The latte was pretty strong and refreshing, although nothing too special. It pairs nicely with the cookie, though. The interior is clean and modern with lots of natural light. There aren't that many seats, but there is plenty of cute Levain wall artwork to look at it. read more

Popped into Levain Bakery during a stroll through Georgetown. It was in the early evening so there was no line. I was happy to see that they had a gluten free/vegan cookie on the menu. However, the only flavor also contained nuts so if that's a concern for you in addition to gluten or dairy, you won't really have any options here. The cookies here are like big mounds of doughy, chocolatey, goodness and I imagine the non-vegan and glutinous versions are a lot better than what I had. I still enjoyed the cookie and was surprised with how moist it was, but it did have a sort of grainy texture to it that wasn't super pleasant after a while. We both got mochas with oat milk which were good though. The other treats on display in the case looked so yummy and I'm jealous I'm not able to enjoy them. I'd love to see a new and improved gluten free option. Even one that isn't also vegan and contains nuts could make a big difference in the texture. read more

Levain only has one cookie on their menu that is vegan and luckily it is the only cookie you need. Their vegan and gluten free chocolate chip cookie is the perfect balance of sweet and salty. The portion size is so large it is best shared among friends or saving some for later. Every time I eat the whole cookie, while I enjoy it in the moment, my stomach regrets it later. Maybe that is only a problem for people over 30. The inside has minimal seating and luckily there are plenty of spots to savor the cookie outdoors. I've frequented this Levain quite a bit over time and always like to make a stop in during my stroll on the main streets of Georgetown. This most recent time I got the two chip chocolate chip cookie (pictured below) and it was warm, gooey, and had sooo much chocolate chips pieces that's melted in your mouth but wasn't too sweet. First time EVER trying Levain and let me just say, there needs to be more locations in the DMV Area! OMG their treats are so amazing, and honestly worth the price! I haven't visited their actual store front yet, but i did get cookies delivered through doordash. It took an hour or so, due to my location, and the location of the bakery, but nonetheless they arrived and looked beautiful! The pictures surely don't do any justice, you just have to see them and try them in person to understand. For under $6/cookie- you can't go wrong! I tried the dark chocolate peanut butter chip & walnut chocolate chip 100/100!!!! I so agree with other reviews that the "Two-Chip" chocolate chip cookie can be a little overly sweet, but the walnut chocolate chip has just the right amount of chocolate chips. The double chocolate peanut butter chip at first I wasn't a fan of (because i didn't heat it up first) after it was warmed, an EXPLOSION of flavors filled my mouth and it was very tasty warm. Would I purchase from this bakery again? A HUNDRED TIMES OVER. This isn't nothing like crumbl so don't compare it as such. This New York gem deserves all the praise! Stopped in on a Friday night for a warm beverage and cookie and was not disappointed. I really appreciate that they stay open pretty late as this is a great little nightcap for after dinner or activities in Georgetown. Ate a chocolate chip cookie there and took an oatmeal raisin one to go. The cookies are always baked fresh and delivered to you warm. The cookies are expensive but they do not skimp! The cookies are huge and decadent and the chocolate chip especially is STUFFED with chips. Also had a seasonal peppermint hot chocolate that was delectable. They must melt their chocolate to make a cocoa because it was super flavorful and rich. A fairly small shop but there are some seats. They played fun reggeaton the whole time we were there. Staff were friendly and service was quick! No public restrooms which is a bit inconvenient but otherwise a great spot. read more

I'm normally not a fan of NYC exported brands and chains (e.g. Magnolia Bakery) because they tend to be overrated and over-priced. However, Levain is worth the hype, the occasional long line, and the money. I love their original cookie and seasonal cookies. I'm also obsessed with their chocolate chip banana bread. This bakery is super chill but they don't have tons of seating. There are a couple of bench seats and more of those hard bar stool type of chairs. I bought a blueberry muffin for me, and two apple turnovers for me. What was interesting to me is that they also service ice cream, and there were also various types of breads that they had just baked. There weren't a ton of specialty cakes or pies out on display and I wondered why. There was a cool employee behind the counter happy to help, and everything was kosher. The turnovers and muffins were fluffy and delicious and they we're obviously handcrafted and made with gold dust earlier today.
