We went here for a drink on a Saturday night. The rooftop area is absolutely beautiful, and the seating is great. However, the bar really does not live up to rooftop bar you would see in any major city. They had last call at 10:30pm on a Saturday...what kind of bar does that! We arrived around 10:20pm and were told we could get a drink and sit outside, but that there would be no service. We took our drinks outside and were sitting on the roof with about 40+ other individuals who would have liked to get drinks, but could not because it was now 10:45. Called for reservations, was told there was no need. Went at 6:30p, and many happy hour customers were wrapping up. We were seated mby a window & handed menus. 5, 10, 15 minutes. Watched wait staff wandering around. No greeting, no water. Got up and left @18 minutes. We went to Artichoke Cafe, were treated like welcome guests, dropped $200 and left $40 tip. If I could give less than one star I would! Where do I begin?.. filthy restaurant, trash on the ground, chairs missing cushions, glut of wait staff not actually doing anything...we were seated and no one came to welcome us or give us water for over 20 minutes. We ended up having to order drinks from a food runner. Ordered 2 margaritas with Casamigos and we were served 2 of the absolute worst margaritas we have ever had! Finally ordered food after 45 minutes, after takings our food order the waiter went and chatted with another table for over 15 minutes before putting our food order in. By now we have been waiting at the table for over an hour with no food and 2 undrinkable margaritas! Sent the margaritas back and ordered 2 sparkling waters-waited for 20 minutes, waters never came, food never came, no one came to our table so we got up and left. The food was much above the expectations with reasonable price and reasonable portions. Definitely worth going to, awesome steak!!!! We went for a friends birthday. I really wanted to fall head over heals in love, and it was great, I'm just not in love. First off the seating is odd. You can't make a reservation unless you are staying at the hotel or you have a really big group. When we get there it's a 45 min wait for a table or we can sit at the bar or communal table. Sitting at the bar is normally fine for us, but this time we had s person with a bum leg and the bar was a challenge- plus it was a cozy birthday dinner and it's hard to talk when your at the bar. We ended up at the community table. Our waiter, Aaron was lovely. My vegan duck enchiladas were fantastic, as was my husbands fish dish. My friend got the Alfredo pasta dish and was also pleased. His wife's whole meal was comped though. It was the wrong salad & the soup was tasteless & sad. But the staff was great and the view is stunning and their drinks are always interesting and good. White people arrive after us Hispanics and were given more attention like water refills and food arriving faster after a few minutes and our party waiting 45 minutes without a water refill. This was my third time at Level 5, the rooftop bar/restaurant at Hotel Chaco. Let me first say that the hotel itself is stunning, absolutely beautiful. They did a fantastic job putting this place together. Too bad they have not put as much thought and finesse into their beautiful rooftop venue. I had been here twice before, for drinks. Service was a bit slow and I chalked it up to being a new place, with new staff. Last night I and a couple girlfriends went to Lvl 5 to celebrate a birthday. We made reservations and specifically requested a table on the big open patio, overlooking the lights of the city. They seated us inside. We got moved but it wasn't where we thought we'd made reservations for. We ordered a bottle of champagne and it took almost a HALF AN HOUR for it to arrive. I actually got up and tracked someone down to find out what the hell...How long does it take to fetch a bottle of champagne?? Once it was opened and poured, the waiter put it in a bucket and set it down next to my friend's chair. She got up and literally ran into it and had to catch it before it hit the floor. With a measure of trepidation, we ordered some appetizers. The avocado hummus was served with a minimum of chips and was bland. The meat tray came with duck, serrano ham and soppreseta and was boring and uninspired. Presentation was mediocre, at best. While we had intended to have dinner, we nixed that idea, paid the check and left. A disappointing experience, to say the least. It's a shame that such a beautiful setting is going to waste. I and my friends feel that it had a haphazard, poorly trained staff and a kitchen that didn't particularly care. The service was abysmal. The place was busy but not packed (it was the Sunday before Labor Day, so like a weekend night, essentially). I hope this place gets it's act together or it's never going to make it. read more

We returned to Level 5 to celebrate my wife's birthday after having been turned away over a year ago. We know the reputation of the Heritage Hotel & Resorts Group and one can see that a lot of resources and energy have been poured in to Hotel Chaco so we carried some high expectations. A quick read of the menu demonstrates an honest attempt by the Executive Chef and the surroundings are certainly special, however a restaurant review of the whole operation leaves me so unsatisfied. If an establishment is going to charge $25+ for entrees then the quality of service and attention had better support the prices. A diner deserves to be a part of a culinary experience for these prices and in my view, this is not the case. My family went in ahead of me as I parked so when I arrived at the hostess podium I asked to find my family and I was told that I could look around. When I found our table we were one chair short. I asked a hostess if I could move over a chair rather than just helping myself. She said she needed to check with the lead. I was left standing for several minutes. Now you tell me why an employee cannot meet the guest's needs and then replace the chair. When she did return she moved us to another table with less appeal. By the way the hostess and the server never identified that I was never offered a menu. I also question why arriving quests are held in the elevator foyer as the host ascertains their seating. The operation just has no sense of caring for people. If this establishment is going to get broader appeal it is going to have to better manage walk-in guests and non- hotel diners. The seating of the outdoor tables and indoor tables is so uneven that those of us outside feel second class. This does not promote a feeling of being welcome. The staff appears very young, green and well-meaning albeit directionless. Our server was unable to answer questions about the food and was absent for long periods. If there was a floor manager on duty it was never evident. The food was just okay but my impressions are colored by the overall lackluster performance of the service staff. The kitchen may be working very hard to produce top-flight cuisine but if the front of the house lacks the vision and polish then what is it worth. I would ask the leadership at HHR, what they want Level 5 to be? Currently it is a stylish bar with good side dishes and pricey craft cocktails but it is certainly not a fine dining establishment. read more

1st time, no reservation. They took us to stand up bar top, on the outside of bar area. Great view. Staff was friendly enough. There were at least 30 open seats, but ok we didn't have a reservation, so whatever. Got the tab. Sit down for this. One shot totaled $55 from a bottle of 12 year old McAllen scotch. Let me repeat, 1 shot $55. Ok, I am willing pay but when I confronted the waiter about being able to buy an ENTIRE BOTTLE of McAllen 12 year for $40 to $44 dollars I was told the surgen general had charged then alot for their liquor license. So ok, I chalked it up to stupidity for not asking before I purchased, but wow that was one expensive drink! I would ask the owners to quit gouging. I suggest you ask for the price before ordering anything no matter how crude that may seem. Also, make a reservation so you don't have to stand and look at a bunch of open seats. read more

This place only gets 2 stars because it is beautiful and has amazing views. Without our those it would be 1 Star. The service is horrible and the food is mediocre yet expensive. I waited awhile to come here because I had heard how bad the service was, but time has not helped. It took over 3 hours to eat dinner (apps and entree) and that was not 3 hours of numerous courses, it was just waiting. We were a large party but it took 45 minutes just to get us all drinks. The hummus appetizer was the only one that was pretty good. The salad was mixed greens with a couple slices of bell pepper and bland dressing. Numerous people got filet and none were cooked to correct temperature. I had halibut and it was over cooked and dry, the rice with it was mushy and cold. All the meals lacked seasoning, especially salt. The menu needs an overhaul and the staff needs motivation and training. I'd consider going here again for just a cocktail on an evening that I am prepared to wait around. read more

The drinks are 1/2 the size of other upscale locations in town, but twice the price ($12 is base). Asked multiple times about the 4 available tables during our two and a half hours there. None was ever occupied. A couple of months ago I had an amazing date night with my husband at Level 5 where we enjoyed good cocktails and delicious food. This weekend we were terribly disappointed by the food and service. The avocado hummus was not the same dish as we previously enjoyed. This time it was bland and a bit watery which I would guess from out of season avocados. The garnished avocado wasn't ripe or edible. We ordered the ribeye for dinner which was way over cooked. We sent it back and the server acted like this was a regular occurrence. After being told we've switch to the cocktail menu minutes before the cutoff, we were ushered to a fire pit and told we couldn't sit at a table section where other patrons were sitting. I had lunch yesterday with 5 others at Level 5. We were apparently sitting at the table next to and east of Jennifer G's party (who is not an acquaintance, and who reviewed the restaurant yesterday). I'd like to verify that her description of the experience is completely accurate. We were seated outside, at a great location to watch the eclipse. A waitress arrived and took our drink orders in a reasonable period of time. Most of us asked for non-alcoholic beverages, but one asked for a Bloody Mary. The waitress apologized that that was not going to be possible, because the bar didn't have the ingredients (tomato juice, Worcestershire sauce???). Our wait for food was reasonable, but when it arrived, brought by a waiter who was not our original server, only three of us got our orders. Interestingly, the table next to us also got their food at about the same time, but only 3 of the 6 there were served. After waiting 10-15 minutes for the rest of our food, it became clear that it was on our neighbor's table (Jennifer G), and was, understandably, being eaten. Our original waitress, did not return. A waiter arrived, and tried to sort out what what other food we needed. He returned 10 or 15 minutes later and informed us that our food was in the kitchen and would be out soon. It never arrived, nor did he return. In the meantime, the diners to our east were also having issues with the service. A gentleman walked over and introduced himself to all of us as the hotel concierge. He was very kind and sympathetic, but could do nothing to help us get our food. In fact, he told us that he had stopped by for a latte, and had had to wait 40 minutes for it. So after 90 minutes in the restaurant, we decided to bail out, and skip trying to get the rest of our order. We had enjoyed seeing the eclipse, but not the rest of the experience. We ran into our original waitress on the way out and told her what a disaster our lunch was. She was unconcerned, and unapologetic. There was no manager in sight at any time, but one of our group insisted on speaking with him/her. My wife, daughter and I left, but learned later that we not charged for the meal. I should also add that the food we did have was not what one would expect from a menu inspired by Mark Miller. Two had caesar salads with slightly wilted lettuce and croutons that were rock hard. A third had a poached chicken sandwich that proved to be somewhat dry shredded chicken on bread dressed with a large amount of very sweet cherry moutarde. This may simply be a matter of personal taste, but she was not able to eat it. Hotel Chaco is beautifully done, with killer views from the restaurant/bar at Level 5. But the staff is clearly terribly disorganized. Hopefully, with more time and adequate management, it will be a wonderful place to dine. But not now. read more

Wow wanted to make a special birthday supper with my husband and family. Was told that locals could not make reservations but if we came early maybe we would get a table. Well it was outside and in the sun and 100 degrees out. We ordered some appetizers and drinks and basically got treated like lepers - had to wait over 15 minutes for a cocktail from the bar, the wait staff was intent on ignoring us for a party in the shady section of the rooftop and they were stingy with water and ice (remember it was 100 degrees on the patio). The appetizers were quite good especially the chicken corn and tomatillo soup and the bruschetta but the charcuterie plate was full of bland cheese (I can get better at Costco). So we left with out ordering entrees. The view is fantastic but please lose the snotty attitude of your wait staff. read more

I've been a couple of times and the patio is beautiful and the view of the mountains is unbeatable! This doesn't really make up for the massive shortcomings of this place! I'm a local who lives in the valley and was super excited to have a fun new destination in this part of town. What a disappointment! Wine comes by the half glass (very expensive!), there are two many picky rules about where you can sit and what you can order based on the seat that is chosen for you, it all just feels like fake service and the uniforms are just plain awful!! read more

This is one of the worst steaks I've had in a very long time. I ordered a steak medium rare. It came out blue. I sent it back to have them throw it on the grill for 30 seconds and it cane out well done. Oh and it took about an hour for the steak to come out. Stay away and save your money. read more

The view is amazing but I have now had two terrible experiences. We made reservations to sit at an outside table. When we got there, they didn't want to sit us at a table but rather in one of their cocktail seats. They said the needed to save the table for people who were there to dine. We didn't once see someone sit at that table the entire time, we were there having drinks. There was also another couple next to us who were being treated terrible as well. They got up and said they would never come back because they were told to shift around too. The time before I came we had to go through hoops just to get a drink in the rooftop. They'll have to seriously rethink there logic if they want to stay open. This is Albuquerque not LA. read more

Recently was a guest to the Hotel Chaco. Thought we would go upstairs for a drink and watch the sun set. The restaurant tables were empty and the bar had 4-5 people seated. They tried seating us outside but was 18 degrees. Staff acted extremely affronted that we simply wanted a drink and appetizer without a reservation. BTW, we were dressed appropriately. We insisted and they seated us at a table, still no customers as it was early. The appetizer was good, drink was weak and service poor. Come on boys and girls, this is Albuquerque not Manhattan. Stay away unless you find comfort in a pretentious environment. Went next door to Gardunos and enjoyed ourselves. read more

The food is good but the service is astoundingly bad. Took an hour and a half for our food to arrive, with no apology or explanation. When we asked for bread while waiting, we were told that it would take 15 minutes because preparing bread "would distract the chefs." I went for lunch today to watch the eclipse; we made reservations. I was giving this place a second chance because my first experience was horrible: disorganized, slow service, poor customer service. I figured they had enough time to work out their kinks. I was WRONG! It took our waitress 25 minutes to come to the table to take our order; she didn't bring a glass of wine ordered for an additional 15 minutes and never returned. We had to go to the bartender to inquire where the waitress was so we could get water refills. The food brought out to our table was for a different table. The staff didn't realize until half the order was placed and 3 entrees were missing. The waitress did not drop the food herself, so the individual pawned off with that task had no clue what went where, or even what the dishes were. It took another staff member 10 minutes to bring a spoon for the soup. Having enough at this point, I asked for the manager. No apology was given and he retreated to the kitchen never to return, just like our waitress. Two other servers came up to re-take our order. An additional 25 minutes go by and no entrees were produced; and they were just salads. There was no sense of urgency to correct the error or ameliorate the situation. Our hour lunch was now at 1.5 hours and still no food for half the table. By the time it was delivered, we had cancelled the entire order to return to our respective jobs. A different server went to box the food, which took an additional 10 minutes. The manager never returned to apologize for the horrible service! The handling of all of this was disorganized and unprofessional and the same as my first experience at Level 5. I will NOT return for a third visit, despite the epic views of the city. read more

The bottom line first - Level 5 is just okay, not good or great. I don't expect every item to be stellar at a restaurant, but I do expect a restaurant of this type to have everything be passable. Cocktails: sound great on paper but actually not so good. I got the Botanical, a gin and tonic that has bay, pepper, thyme and other spices added. Sounds good, and while I could see a lot of the additions in the glass, the taste was akin to a watered down gin and tonic made with cheap gin. Other people in my group also had what tasted like watered down versions of standard drinks. We got the avocado hummus appetizer. This was quite good. I got the pasta of the day, which was ravioli in a tomato creme sauce. This was also quite good. But another of our party had the vegetarian dish, which was a stuffed squash. Very bland, and not good tasting. Again, I don't expect everything to be great, but it should be edible. We did not have the staff problems experienced by others, but the place was nearly empty and we were our waiters only table for most of the night. Level 5 has the views and is worth going there for the views and a drink. The terrace is where you want to be, you get to take in all the views, sit on comfortable seating, and there is ample spacing between one another. It would seem Level 5 prioritizes drinks/cocktails/appetizers on the terrace. It's clearly the more valuable real estate, possibly what most folks come here to do. If you stay for dinner, your options are to eat inside or be placed alongside an outside wall. The outdoor side wall is not particularly great. A row of tables are jammed next to one another. And more unfortunate was our dinner experience. The food we ordered was overpriced, under-portioned and not terribly original. We started with the avocado hummus appetizer. It was ok...nothing special, no particular flavor or kick to it, a bit underwhelming, although the presentation was nice. For our entrees, my husband ordered the locally sourced beef special, medium rare, it came out well done. For a $42 beef entree, the cut of the meat and the cooking is pretty much all that you're paying for. Our waiter offered to take it back and "touch it up". What does that mean? How do you touch up an overdone steak? Clearly they needed to start over and recook the steak again to a medium rare. It was however, getting late and both our meals were in front of us. It would take another 15 minutes of waiting to have the steak prepared again and my food would be sitting there getting cold if we decided to wait for his meal to re-arrive. So he opted to eat the overdone meat. The waiter said he would offer a discount for that error and apply it to the bill. A nice gesture. I had ordered the vegetarian dish, quinoa wrapped in zucchini with a spiralized vegetable on top and a tasty drizzled sauce. It was good but the portion was tiny, seemed more like an appetizer than an entree. Very light, low fat, dairy free, needed something more, perhaps toasted sliced almonds...and it certainly needed more than just 3 quinoa "mini-sausage" sized shaped logs wrapped in thin zucchini. Just not filling. I went home pretty hungry after eating an appetizer and an entree, and I am a fairly small woman, 5"x2" 106 lbs. We got the bill and struggled to find the "discount" for the overdone beef. Oh, they took off the tax, $6.30, and applied that as the discount. Really? A $42 steak with a $6.30 discount. Pretty laughable. If we ever come here again it will be only for a drink on the lovely terrace. read more

Beautiful but poorly executed. We arrived as a party of three around 8:30pm for drinks. We were told there was a wait but we could get drinks from the outdoor bar. Being from DC, we did not think twice of pursuing this option. It turns out that the outdoor bar has a very limited menu of local sparkling wine. We proceeded to the indoor bar and noticed only one seat was open. We decided to order a drink and then walk outside to a standing table. While waiting for drinks at the bar, we were told "standing around the bar is not allowed" which seems quite pretentious for Albuquerque. I heard the hostess tell a new group that the bar was not accepting "walk ups" as we left- what does this even mean? Albuquerque is endearing due to the soul it emphasizes throughout the city (which was not evident here) Overall, it's a great space and a cool idea for our city. The view was the best--as its only been open 2 weeks, you must make a reservation. In the summer, all tables are "outdoor" so when choosing if you are a party of 2 pick dinner "indoors" as those are the best view and temperature coolest. The walls are open, so indoors is really outdoors but in the shade. We really enjoyed the gin and tonic special drink (first drink on the menu). It was similar to the ones we had in Spain with the juniper berries in it. The avocado hummus was outstanding with a variety of chips and crackers that are similar to Lavash. We had the short ribs and the empanadas. Husband liked the short ribs very much; I loved the empanadas. Next time I will try the roasted veggies with egg on top. The one negative: they will not cork your wine!! House policy!? So they want you to over-drink or not order a bottle. Not sure what that policy is about. Their prices are 1/2 pours or the bottle. We ordered the Caymus for $75 as the half pours were $11, thinking we would take half the bottle home. We were wrong. So we left half the bottle on the table. Bummer. For this reason, I advise no mixed drinks; just buy a bottle and plan to drink it all. read more

Level five is one of the most beautiful rooftop bars in albuquerque, if not the best in terms of atmosphere and aesthetic. The beer is very reasonably priced for the upscale feel and being a hotel roof bar (6.00 + tax for local craft) and the brunch menu and cocktail menu is only slightly more expensive than if not comparable to your standard nice-ish albuquerque options (I.e. Standard, scalo, gold st etc). The prices plus the atmosphere and the intent have me determined to continue coming back until all the kinks are worked out however, some of these kinks definitely need to be addressed. I love this place and I want it to succeed so I'm going to share These critiques in hopes that someone will read this and see where I'm coming from. The staff is disorganized, as with any new place there is an adjustment period but I think this goes slightly beyond this. Once I went there and it definitely took way too long to get a drink, another time there was a staff meeting discussing how they could do better but our server was paying more attention to the meeting while ignoring us right in front of the manager. Perhaps a slight change in management structure could help. Additionally, there have been a ton of idle employees yet sooooo many dirty tables. It was the end of the night sure, but the place looked terrible and there were a ton of extra hands that could have taken care of that. I really hope that this is helpful and not hurtful, because I truly do love this place and our servers ability to do their job was hindered by the way the place is being organized, it was not their fault at all. I just hope a little bit more organization happens here! read more

The food was very pretty, but overpriced and not that tasty. We had the avocado hummus and it was good, but not worth $12 and it did not have enough chips. Extra chips were another $4. The olives were fine, but nothing fantastic. The shrimp dish was $34 and included eight very small shrimp and was otherwise mostly lentils. It was also ok, but nothing amazing. If I had made it myself at home, I would have eaten it, but never made it that way again. The cheese board also was ok, but nothing exciting and included 2 wedges each of drunken goat, manchego, and some soft cow cheese. Nothing worth $12. In fact, just a week ago I had almost exactly the same cheeses at Scalo with more cheese and it wasn't $12! The sorbet was absolutely forgettable and the other desert had an interesting looking, but slightly disgusting tasting, pistachio smear on top. Also, you should know that if the weather is not great they close the patio upstairs and seat you in the lobby downstairs, even if you have reservations. The service was not great either and everything took ridiculously long to get to the table. Our meal took 3 hours, mostly of waiting. Also they brought a dish with peanuts after being told of a peanut allergy, bison jerky was on top of the olives after it was requested to be on the side.
