Visited this place for a friend's birthday dinner. Don't judge a book by its cover, folks. While the outside looks rinky dink, the interior is so modern and upscale it blows you away. Parking is slim to none, but a street spot is easy if you go early enough in the evening. Had the lamb chop appetizer...cooked to perfection. Took sushi to go, and it was the freshest I've ever had. The bar does this cool light up thing where you place your hand...yeah, I could be entertained for hours. And the service was top-notch, even for a group of 10+. Would definitely return. read more

The food and customer service is always spot on here. Even if the food wasn't as fantastic as it is, I would keep going just based in the wonderful customer service I've consistently received. I heard about this place from a friend and never thought I'd go...until I craved some sushi! I saw it while driving up Broad street but it looked like a hole in the wall, but the sign looked familiar. I took my chances and went inside; I was amazed by the atmosphere! It's a super trendy and modern restaurant with two levels and a cool touch sensitive bar that lights up, maybe heat sensitive? I was impressed by the draft beer selection and the menu seemed pretty reasonable. The service was good, but i expected it since there was only one other table there. Surprisingly, the most disappointing factor about this place was the food. I ordered gyoza (fried pork dumplings) for an appetizer but they were bland, almost like they weren't cooked long enough. They tasted like steamed dumplings, which I purposely avoid because I don't care for them. I ordered the Surf & Turf Roll (Filet Mignon & Lobster) for my entree and it was not good at all. I think they used rice or soy paper, but it tasted burnt and not satisfying for the price. Honestly, I wanted to tell the server I didn't like it, but I sucked it up and ate it anyways. Overall, the presentation of the roll was nice, but the quality did not live up to the expectations. I also ordered spring rolls but they weren't very special and tasted like Chinese take-out spring rolls. I'd probably try this place again, but with reservations. Great service. Cool atmosphere. The bar does this light up thing that is mesmerizing. They have live music planned, which is stellar. The food was good. I don't know if it was great, per say, because we ordered pretty standard stuff: soup, sushi, stir fry. Everything was up to par. Nothing knocked our socks off. I ordered while in the Hospital and was eagerly waiting for the meal to arrive. I was very happy with everything that I ordered, how long it took to arrive and how well prepared it all was. The cucumber roll was packed with cucumber the same with the sweet potato roll. The Boston roll was so full that it had trouble staying together and the shrimp and veggie rolls were great. With the sheer amount of sushi restaurants in Richmond, LEVEL doesn't quite measure up. For me it's the kind of restaurant that kind of slips through the cracks - it isn't memorable in either a good or bad way so it gets forgotten. The interior and atmosphere is very nice and the prices are on par with other restaurants. This may be a good place to dine at for groups that have members that would appreciate a more broad menu that includes non-sushi dishes such as fried rice, kung pao chicken, pad thai noodles, etc. read more

I ordered the Godzilla roll which was suppose to be half off since it was Wednesday as part of their deal. On the menu it's a 13 dollar roll, which is still over priced considering it's just spicy tuna and avocado. They charged me 8 dollars for the roll which is not half off. Didn't notice till after we left. We almost got up because our food was taking forever to come out of the kitchen. We have been here before and the male bartender was awesome. LEVEL is the best sushi place in Richmond, rivaled only with Fighting Fish. The place is really pretty and the light up bar is a fun touch. Service is always good. I've tried almost every appetizer here and have been blown away by all of them. However, the lamb lollipops, the fuji wontons, and the edamame are my favorites. As far as sushi goes pretty much everything is solid, but the Fall In Love roll is always a good choice. I don't know how I never knew about this place! 10/10 always slaps read more

We moved here from the eastern shore of Maryland from a town with AMAZING sushi restaurants. So coming to Richmond where the food scene is off the charts, we've found that the sushi here is lacking. Level has been the best we've been able to find so far. Everything seemed high quality, well made, fresh and tasty. But compared to what we've seen in other cities, it does lack a bit of creativity and variety. We'll definitely be back, especially interested to try their endless maki Tuesday special.. we came on Valentine's Day with a reservation for 7:30. We were seated at 7:40. The waitress (who seemed to also be the hostess and owner) didn't stop by our table to get us water until 7:55. And didn't come back to take our order until 8:15. We didn't get our first plate of sushi until 9:00. Yikes. The waitress was super friendly and nice and apologetic. But 1.5 hour wait time for food is pretty bad. They just seemed horribly understaffed. Overall pros- good quality sushi. We'll come back for more. Mom chose Level for lunch one day. Mom's getting older, and I'm all about taking her out because I'll be dead soon (she's gonna live forever!) I was surprised she chose this place... it's definitely wanna-be trendy, kind of edgy with the decor and targeted at a younger crowd than Mom, who is 60+. I'm a shitty son, I know her birthday but I don't know how old she is. Suffice to say, this place is a bit "younger" than she anticipated. She suggested sushi, but I'm so over sushi because I'm hip like that. Sushi places area dime-a-dozen around here, and often disappointing. Besides, that's SOOOO 2011. We ended up deciding on the Bento Boxes, mine with Salmon and hers with Chicken. They both come with Miso Soup, a salad, and a smattering of other stuff (read on!) Mom is not a fan of Miso soup. I don't blame her. Not once have I seen the Miso soup arrive and gone "oh, hell yes! MISO SOUP, gonna devour this shit!" More like, "I have to sip on this shit till the sushi arrives". Sorry Japan, but miso soup is lame. Prove me wrong and I'll be happy to give it yet another day in court. Mom asked for Egg-drop soup instead... a solid choice. The waitress told her it would be an extra $2, and mom's a little tighter than she needs to be with the wallet these days. She declined, and told her to skip the soup altogether. I guess her dislike of miso goes into the realm of disdain. Cute little waitress arrives with soup for both of us (she brought mom egg drop at no extra cost) along with salads with that normal sesame dressing that's ubiquitous to sushi joints. Don't think I'm talking down about the waitress, I worked food service for a long time and have nothing but respect for the waitstaff. She was cute, and she was little, and she brought my aging mom the soup she wanted and mom was happy. I think the world of our waitress for going beyond expectations! Perhaps the soup and salad served separately, to make the meal more of an experience, but I'm not gonna get hung up on this point. The rest of the "Bento Box" was pretty cool. 4 pieces of a california roll, done really well. They put some picked veg in the rolls, Japanese style. It was the best california roll I've ever had, and that's totally the handjob of sushi in my book. Hibachi salmon/chicken with onions and peppers, very nice. The chicken (cause I tried some of moms) could have been a bit more tender, but it's chicken breast. The handjob of meat, IMHO. Fried rice... never bad, and I enjoyed it. A couple of dumplings thrown into the mix, if you don't love dumplings you are a bad person. These were good, but could have used some more of the dedicated sauce to dip in. An astounding volume of food at a decent price (about $12 a plate). All well prepared, though nothing as astounding as the volume of food. The service was solid. My tea was filled a couple of times, and lunch could have been 45 minutes if mom and I decided that it should be. Mom and I tend to linger a bit, and that wasn't an issue at all. Off street parking, easy for mom, who hates parallel parking. Looks like a decent beer selection, but I don't start drinking till 4pm. A well rounded Asian menu, and mom seemed to enjoy the california rolls alongside everything else. I trust that everything else on the menu is skillfully prepared and palatable, but I will reserve my 5th star for my second experience there. They were hosting an event so we sat at the bar (which lights up whenever you touch it, pretty cool). We ordered some appetizers, edamame and Goyza, which are had to mess up, and one roll, I forget which one exactly. The roll was sub-par and seemingly wet? It was the strangest thing. My girlfriend thought it was disgusting; I considered it bearable. We had planned on ordering more sushi but couldn't get past that first one. The bartender was really nice. I am always looking for new places to go eat in Richmond, and LEVEL did not disappoint! Half of our party was craving sushi, and the other half wanted Hibachi. Both were PHENOMENAL! I personally ordered the Crispy Honey Chicken, and it was one of the best things I have ever tasted. After dinner, we got the fried ice cream and it proved to be an extremely delicious treat. We eat at Level a couple of times a month. It is consistently good. Wednesday is half price roll of the week which is always one of their best rolls. The space is clubby (in a good way) without trying too hard; the service was very good even though we were sitting at the completely full bar and the tables were mostly occupied).
