Absolutely delicious. One of the best meals I've had. Pricey but worth it. Seating was private and service was great.

Perfection - This place is pricey, but worth the splurge. I had a medium-rare filet cooked excellent paired with an old vine Zinfandel. The 3lb lobster nearly killed me with how good it was...Appetizers were the crab balls - great with horsey sauce, but a bit overpriced. The side salad with soft onion bread & butter was a nice start off, and did't disappoint. For desert, delicious Hagen daas vanilla ice cream with brownie, whip cream & chocolate syrup. My wife and I loved the service. Will definitely come back here on special occasions for a 5dinner! read more

The service was excellent, but the food was disappointing other than the salad and the baklava. We had the wedge and Greek salads and both were excellent. However we ordered a cowboy steak and a ribeye. The cowboy steak was absolutely not 25 ounces even considering the bone. The ribeye was so much bigger than the cowboy and a lot thicker too. Btw, the ribeye was about $20 less too! The cowboy (I can't believe they even called it a cowboy) was also overcooked. The sides were actually terrible and are my main complaint. There was way too much nutmeg in the creamed spinach. The lyonnaise potatoes were a soggy greasy mess. Oh and I should mention we wanted the baked potato but was told they had run out of baked potatoes (we were told they only have a dozen on Sunday night and they were gone-and we did not have a late reservation ). Wth... no baked potato at a steakhouse? I wanted to go next door to Ruth Chris and get one to go! The asparagus was old, wrinkled, some pieces almost white, and barely grilled. The mushrooms reminded me of canned mushrooms, they were served whole and also a soggy greasy mess. So bad! The sauce that came with the lump crab (hollandaise?) , not sure what it was called but it tasted like it had been poured out of a can onto our plate and was room temp at best. So very disappointing. I really can't understand what they hype is about and the 4 1/2 stars? Reading the comments from the restaurant, I expect they will say we should've said something while we were there. We weren't comfortable doing that because of the company we were with. I didn't want it to be corrected at that moment, it would've inconvenienced our guests and that wasn't necessary. The purpose of this review is to provide an opinion for prospective diners and the owners and hopefully the experience we had won't be repeated. Fresh side dishes, more side offerings, and not running out of baked potatoes would be great for starters. If you do dine here I would stick with a salad (dressing on the side), baked potato, and steak. Skip those sides. read more

We were very fortunate to get a same day reservation, and now understand why it's always booked. Our server, Brian, was incredibly attentive, he didn't miss a beat. The half bottles of wine were very reasonably priced. KUDOS to the chef for our perfectly prepared Oysters Rockefeller, petite filets, sautéed spinach a la George, and mashed potatoes. Ate here with my wife and parents to celebrate my dads birthday and our nine year anniversary. I rarely go to Annapolis but it is close to my parents who live in Kent island. We wanted steak and wanted to try something different. My wife chose lewnes based off yelp reviews. Like many places in Annapolis parking is terribly difficult to find. We got lucky and found parking in a parallel street within less than five minutes. My parents were already awaiting us in a booth. Our waiter was very friendly, at tentative, and knowledgeable about the menu and drinks. He suggested a couple of Martinis which were absolutely delicious. Bread was nice and hot and served with soft butter. We had an order of six oysters rockafella which really got my appetite going. We all ordered the ribeye and we had sides of spinach a la george, sautéed mushrooms, and lyonnaise potatoes which went well with our steaks. The steaks were perfectly cooked but a little too salty for my tastes ( I don't use much salt in my cooking). My dad who usually is very picky these days about what he eats finished his whole steak. So he definitely enjoyed it. The waiter then brought out 2 complimentary orders of the hot brownie served with ganache, whip cream, and vanilla ice cream which was fantastic. Lewnes Steakhouse has been one of my favorite restaurants ever since I was a Midshipman many moons ago, and I'm happy to report that the food and service at this Annapolis steakhouse is just as good as I remember. I brought my family to Lewnes when I was in town for a football game, and we had a great experience. My favorite menu items have always been the crab balls, either a ribeye or filet, and the creamed spinach. So of course, we had all of those things, including some oysters on the half shell. The crab balls are amazing. Fried balls of lump blue crab meat mixed with some bread crumbs. Fantastic. My 22 oz medium rare bone-in ribeye was incredible - seared and seasoned to perfection on the outside, cooked to the right temperature on the inside, and swimming in butter. Yum. The creamed spinach is the best damn creamed spinach I have ever eaten. I am routinely disappointed by the creamed spinach at other restaurants, and I only get to taste what real creamed spinach is supposed to taste like once every couple years when I am back in Annapolis. My wife enjoyed her petite filet, and my kids loved the crab balls. The only thing that wasn't absolutely perfect with the meal was the loaf of onion bread. Usually, the bread tastes like it is fresh out of the oven. The loaf we received this time was a bit dried out, and seems like it may have been reheated or had been sitting in an oven for a while. The bread still tasted great, but it just wasn't as fresh as I remember. Overall, I highly recommend Lewnes to any steak lover visiting Annapolis. Forget Ruth's Chris - this is where you want to eat. And the price is right too! Don't get me wrong because this place ain't cheap. However, I have noticed similar prime steakhouses in other cities will charge more for their steaks. My favorite steakhouse in Denver (Elways) costs a bit more, but doesn't taste quite as good as Lewnes. Lewnes is still my favorite steakhouse. Great food, and great memories. read more

I took the girlfriend here for Valentine's Day, based solely on reviews on Yelp.com. And I wasn't disappointed. We had some of the best food we've ever eaten, and partook in both beer and wine. 2 stars means "Meh. I've experienced better". I know for a fact Lewnes' is better than what we experienced, so I will come back next time I'm in Annapolis. The good: Love the classic historic feel of the building and interior. Bar was full of locals having dinner which always is a good sign. We had a 9pm reservation, but showed up at 8:10 figuring we'd enjoy a cocktail and wait. The maitre d said he could seat us right away at the table just passed the bar room. It was fine and a nice area to sit. The server was professional and great helping choose a well priced Willamette Valley Pinot. Our order was tomato, onion with blue cheese, lyonnaise potatoes, petite filet & new york strip (both medium) The Bad: The tomatoes were December grocery store quality. Seriously? Nobody does tomatoes like Maryland Farmers in August (beefsteak). The potatoes had soaked up the oils used for cooking and tasted like they had sat under a lamp for 2 hours. Both steaks were medium well instead of medium. Unfortunately, that leaves the steak texture not appetizing! I learned from a regular sitting across from us that the chef is known to overcook the steaks and to order medium rare next time, that's what he did. All I can say is that's fine now that I know it, but really?...the server absolutely should know to guide us on the temperature and how the chef cooks them. I will be way more assertive next time. My husband took me here for my birthday and it was quite the nice experience. It's a small place, so our reservations for two were pretty late at 9pm. Parking was a pain because they don't have any dedicated parking (that we could find). Service was alright - it could definitely have been more prompt. Other guests, particularly the ones towards the back, were very loud and obnoxious and no one thought to quiet them down when the rest of the patrons were being polite. We ordered the ribeye and it was cooked PERFECTLY and seasoned very well. It comes covered in butter, which is a bit too much for us. Next time, we'll ask them to hold it or serve it on the side. We also got their potato mash and it was very yummy and flavorful. Their wine choice is very extensive, but not many are offered by the glass. Overall, we would come back for the food. Well prepared steaks are hard to come by and Annapolis is a lovely little area. read more

An Eastport gem. If you enjoy crowded, noisy, large restaurants, then Lewnes' is not the place for you. If you prefer an intimate setting to enjoy the company of your significant other and a fantastic meal, then make a reservation! My husband and I went for restaurant week. The times available were either were early or very late dinner time, we chose early. They were still cleaning the windows when we came in at 5:30 for dinner. The space is very small, but does not feel claustrophobic, more cozy. The part of the restaurant we were seated and made it feel like we were the only ones in the restaurant, a large private booth. Great for a romantic date night! The quality of the food is worth the price. Even the onion loaf and butter they serve for free is delicious... Apparently a friend makes it and delivers it daily... I wonder if they sell the loaves? The steak rivals that of Chop House, which I consider to be the best place for steak. I had a shrimp dish and I can never have shrimp anywhere else, Lewnes' does it the best! Even the vegetables on the side were delicious! Butter makes everything better. :-) The desert is definitely worth the carbs. Had the ice cream brownie... It literally melted in my mouth... Such an indulgent experience! It is a waste to eat ice cream brownies anywhere else but Lewnes'. You will not regret dining here! read more

Ok, I might be flying high in the afterglow of a great 26th anniversary so take this with a grain of salt. A great meal on a fall evening doesn't get better without a res at French Laundry. (See, I warned you.) My bride and I enjoyed ourselves completely tonight at Lewnes'. The clams casino, the salads and of course the mains (crab cakes & ribeye) were just outstanding. The '11 Grgich Hills Estate Zin was big and beautiful like the warm brownie dessert and the service was attentive without being cloying. Be ready to drop two fiddy for you and your date but why get short arms when it's a special night? What else can I say? Kick it up with valet parking and I'm in for five stars. read more

The service and caliber of menu is severely lacking for a steakhouse at this price point. We waited at the host station while two employees chatted about other reservations. Once seated we noted a booth with stains on the wall and a very tarnished lamp on the table. The menus lacked any drink list other than wine. "By the glass" options were very slim. The waiter felt the need to interrupt me multiple times during the order process. I ordered a drink to later find it was actually unavailable. The shareable sides lacked flavor and any creativity; for example the asparagus was simply steamed with little to no salt let alone anything else. The petit filet had great flavor and was very tender but my strip was tough and bland. For $200 this is a very overpriced experience. We won't be returning. read more

I have a pretty old "beef" with Lewnes. No complaint about the food, its always good, as is the service. My complaint is the downstairs ladies bathroom. It is a dump. I have mentioned over and over over the last 15 years and very little has been done to make it acceptable to the level that it should be for such a high priced restaurant. I even wrote the owner about 7-8 years back and got a very nice letter back stating they would be improving it very soon. They had just spent quite a bit on an expansion. Well, I went there last night and what a surprise, still the same grungy bathroom. I think they bought a new mirror, but it needs a major overhaul. Lewnes should be ashamed of themselves that they have neglected to update the ladies room after all these years. I am only giving it two stars because it is appaling to me that nothing has been done resolve this. read more

My husband and I dined here for New Year's Eve, and we were not disappointed. We booked based on the good reviews we read on yelp, and once again you yelpers have proven you can be trusted! I ordered the wedge salad, which was FANTASTIC. And the filet, with bearnaise sauce, and mashed potatoes. The mashed potatoes were pretty 'soupy' for lack of a better word, as one previous reviewer had mentioned. But they were really good. My husband got the lyonnaise potatoes and they were also delicious. My steak was well-prepared and so was his. Overall no complaints. Our server was very friendly and attentive. We were too stuffed for dessert. After dinner we headed across the street to the marina to catch the fireworks. Turned out to be a good plan, as only about 5 other people had the same idea as us, and we avoided the craziness across the water. Advice: Take a cab here. The parking is scarce. read more

This is a very belated review but I can honestly say that this is is the best independent steakhouse within driving distance of Washington, DC. You can get good one-off steaks at some non-steakhouse DC restaurants, and you can get good steaks at the chains, but for an honest, small, old-school, independent steakhouse that knows what it's doing, you have to drive out to Lewnes'. I really wish I could go more often. read more

I'm sure I've written about Lewnes' before. I've eaten here maybe 40-50 times. As with anything you've done 40-50 times some times are better than others. Tonight was the best of the best. James River oysters were perfect...not too briny. The sides--mushrooms with onions, crispy hash browns, spinach and garlic--were good enough to make us consider cancelling the lobster and rib eye. Glad we didn't, as they both were outstanding. Prices are not low, but they are not outrageous. What really made tonight was just the whole gestalt. The pacing was perfect. The server, Patty (remember that name!), knew exactly when to intercede and when to leave us alone. Food was cooked to perfection...and in some cases, Patty sussed out what she THOUGHT we wanted and had enough confidence to steer us in another direction. And with success. We paid plenty for this meal, and we did it with a smile. Patty, in the wine room, with extra crispy hash browns and a perfect Manhattan (with the one you love)....really, what could be better! I have nothing against Ruth's Criss, it's fine...and predictably above average most of the time. But Lewnes' can create memories when the stars align...and what more can you ask? read more

UPDATE: 12/29 NO ONE EVER CALLED TO DISCUSS THIS INCIDENT. VERY DISSAPOINTING AND UNSETTLING. 8OOPm Reservation on 12/4/21 MINORITIES BEWARE! Was excited to have a night out with my husband on my birthday after we'd heard so many great things about Lewnes," however upon entering the restaurant-we were greeted by a less than friendly female bartender who seemed to be bothered that we were there. We (an African American couple) approached the bar to see a small sign on the bar the read "Reserved for -Name- 5:30"- because it was 8:00 pm, I politely asked the bartender if we could sit there until our table was ready-she (a Caucasian female) barely looked up and said "IT'S RESERVED-NO YOU CANNOT SIT THERE." Before I could even say it said 5:30 pm (and it was now 8pm), she continued serving the other 4 Caucasian patrons without even asking if we wanted anything to drink or even glancing our way. No less than 10 minutes later, a group of 4 Caucasian patrons entered, sat down at the very same "reserved" seats, ordered drinks and were NEVER told it was reserved or that they could not sit there. The bartender CLEARED the area, wiped it down and removed the sign-all while she NEVER even asked if we wanted anything. The other patrons even noticed the difference of treatment towards us and said "That is simply not right" and offered us their seats as they were leaving. (we politely refused) So, after seeing this, I walked over to the bar as asked the bartender again..."So, are these seats now NOT reserved??" She (as rudely as she possibly could have) said "THEY ARE HAVING ONE DRINK AND GOING TO A TABLE!" (slightly yelling) - which was the exact same thing we were there to do. The fact is, she never even asked if we had reservations, never asked if we needed/wanted a drink and was flat out rude and a clear racist. She made it clear that we were NOT WELCOMED there. Though ready to leave, my husband convinced me to stay. The positive is that the host and the server were OUTSTANDING-so it made up for the treatment we received by the bartender. The food was delicious and definitely lived up to expectations. The ambiance was great for a quiet date night. If this review was based on the food and server-5 stars. However, first impressions last - and my first impression was extremely negative. As avid travelers (Nationally and Internationally) we have NEVER received this type of treatment. So, despite the good food - sadly we will NEVER return to this restaurant to be treated as undesirables. read more
