A spectacular hidden gem on one of the prettiest streets of the Upper West Side. We came by for a late brunch without a reservation and were quickly accommodated. They have a few options outdoors, which I really appreciated as we still are in a pandemic and it's much safer than indoor dining. The patio is super cute with lights and other decorations. We ordered a few small plates to share and everything reached from very good (falafel) to excellent (three cheese pide) to phenomenal (Fava bean bruschetta and Baklava). We're always on the lookout for neighborhood restaurants that can become our "local." A few years ago, we found Leyla, a Turkish gem tucked away on Manhattan's Upper West Side. I judge a restaurant on three things: service, food, and ambience--and Leyla hits the mark on all three. The service is consistently warm and welcoming. We stopped by last night after being away for a couple of weeks and were greeted like returning regulars--almost like celebrities. A lovely way to begin the evening, and it only got better from there. We started with the short rib pide--often referred to as Turkish pizza--and it was scrumptious. Next came the beet carpaccio salad with goat cheese, baby arugula, and a lemon-olive oil dressing--a perfect palate refresher between the pide and our final dish, shrimp kavides: shrimp with bell pepper, cherry tomato, and shiitake mushrooms. We were full, but if we'd had room, we would've gone for the lamb shank--one of Leyla's standout dishes. Good food, fresh ingredients, and a varied menu. I've been going to this place regularly for several years. My only complaint is the service. It's not bad. It's friendly, but it is rushed at times, intrusive, and at times make you feel rushed, even if the dining room isn't full. I experienced this recently at an 8pm dinner time. They wanted to take our appetizer plates away 10 minutes after serving them (there was still food on them). Dinner plates also attempted to be removed immediately after taking the last bite. It's like they're watching....My answer to this is 17-18% is baseline tip for just bringing me my food with a smile. You want 20% or 25% or 30% which is all egregious and absurd, then the service needs to be top notch, so long as we have to deal with excessive tipping culture. read more

Everything we got was delicious - With the eggplant caviar being a favorite of the table and had a nice spicy kick to it. The zucchini salad was very different than anything I've tried before and was light and refreshing. The salmon was also good - over some mashed potatoes and cooked well. Falafel was also good but I don't know that j would order it again. Would love to try some of the meat dishes here next time. Staff was not super aware of the gluten free options, and seemed to be guessing when I was asking, so would be nice to get a little more clarity on that end as well! read more

I might have a problem with the L-word. I say it too soon. It's not that I don't take love seriously. It's the opposite. As soon as I feel it, I have to blurt it out. But please know that I am utterly serious when I say that--after a single meal--I love Leyla. First, the vibes are cozy, clean, and inviting and the service is friendly. But most importantly, the food is phenomenal. I had the Breakfast Pide. If you've never had Pide before, you're in good company. I never had it before either, and now it's all I want to eat. For the fellow neophyte, Pide is a boat-shaped Turkish flatbread. The breakfast pide was deliciously cheesy, crisp, and flavorful. It comes pre-cut into four shareable slices. It should be mandatory to include one in every brunch order. My wife had the eponymous lamb burger. It was exquisite, a worthy standard-bearer of the Leyla name. It was a juice-dripping, fresh, perfectly medium-rare triumph. (Note: I ate half of it and, again I know it's early, but it might be the best burger on the upper west side). The fries were also a delight. Seasoned and crispy outside, light on the inside, not overly greasy, and appropriately cheesy and truffle seasoned. My pro tip is to request a side of tahini sauce for dippin'. I recognize that these are strong feelings to share after just one brunch. Who knew one of Manhattan's best Turkish restaurants would be on an unlikely side street of the Upper West Side! Fresh back after a trip to Bodrum and İstanbul, I was craving a duble of rakı and some quality mezzes. On a whim, I made a reservation here and loved everything I had, including the smooth fava bean purée, the flavorful spinach yarma, and the very interesting take on mucver, in this case deep fried with a delicious dill dipping sauce. Not to mention the atmosphere is very charming late on a Friday evening. Of course the biggest surprise was when we found out they had recently added my favorite dish, vegetarian mantı, to the menu. They are considerate of COVID-19 and have the menu accessible from a QR code. They also have tables spaced out with plexiglass dividers. (Last year) We were flabbergasted when the server told us she had to charge us *MORE than the stated menu price* for one of the items we ordered, "because it's Mothers Day and we don't have enough of that item!" Tried this place last night and I found it to be a very delightful spot not far from Central Park. Great cocktails - my favorite was Perfect Istanbul which is their variation of manhattan. We enjoyed Smoked Lor, Beetroot Carpaccio Salad ( these two were my absolute favorites as it was super flavorful), hummus - which was okay, but didn't have anything original, and their salmon. The fish was perfectly cooked but the mashed potatoes that were served with it as a side was a complete disappointment. It lacked flavor and was so blended that reminded me baby food. Another reason I took one star off is the bread that was served with all appetizers - I just say that it wasn't a good quality bread that you would expect from such a busy New York restaurant. The veggies were cooked but had a bite. The shell was lovely I mean it was getter than the lamakhoun my friends said. They were out of the eggplant dumpling things so went for the risotto but the server was extremely apologetic and very nice about it. I mean I get it. We were seated in the intimate back area and it felt so cozy and nice. We ordered quickly given everyone was hungry and tired! For apps, we shared zucchini fritters. My bf also got the papatya cocktail. My friend and I each ordered the leyla lamb burger with fries. My bf got the lamb shank and my other friend went with Izmir Kofte. Everything was fabulous and came out quickly which was appreciated. I did notice that the fritters needed salt, and that my burger bun (bottom part) was completely soggy. I know it is sometimes hard to get around this with all the burger juices, but this piece tasted like it had been left in the rain! I've been to Leyla a couple of times for Happy Hour and for brunch over the past 4 months. I've found it to be consistently great every time I visit. Brunch menu is interesting and portions are well plated and prepared with good value. Happy hour plates are excellent with a variety of choices to go with warm pita bread. Ambiance inside, outside on the street and in the lovely back garden is comfortable and relaxed. You can talk to your companions without shouting or overhearing conversations of fellow diners. We waited for ~15 min for a table for 2 because we didn't have a reservation. We got seated outside with a heat lamp over our table but it was still cold on one side of the table though so definitely recommend trying to get a table inside! The food overall was an 8/10 for me :) Hummus $13 (Beetroot salsa, pickled za'atar): 9/10 Lahmacun $16 (Flat bread with minced meat, sumac, onion, parsley, tomato): 7.5/10. This was a little bland for us. Slow Cooked Short Rib Pide $17 (Eggplant spread, kashar cheese): 7/10. This was also a little bland for us.
