One of my favorite Chinese restaurants in Cleveland, and definitely my absolute favorite dim sum. I really appreciate how they carry around extras of the really popular dishes (chicken feet, sesame balls, etc) so you can always get a refill pretty easily on things the table's going to want a few orders of. Also, the tea- I have no idea where they get this stuff but it's fantastic and they charge like a dollar a pot. The dim sum here is alright, but now I feel sad that people drive the 2 hrs from Pittsburgh just to eat here... since it's only ok. I think my main complaint is that there is no variety. There might be 10 different things on one of the carts, but they're all variations of the same salty and fatty ground meat in the dumplings/shumai/just as meatballs. And the meat is so greasy that after a few bites you begin to feel sick. The selection of sweet stuff is a bit better, but still, not many options. Also a bit expensive. A very typical Chinese-American restaurant in terms of taste. I came here with my dad on a Sunday evening and ordered the black pepper sizzling beef, green beans, and shanghai spring rolls. The spring rolls seemed like they had just been fried from frozen and didn't have much flavor to them besides oil. The green beans were coated in sweet and sour sauce, which made finishing them kind of sickly and difficult. The beef was downed in sauce and too chewy, so it was kind of hard to appreciate. Since they were rib slices, my dad compared them to the korean dish la galbi and told me to leave this kind of beef to the Koreans. I will say I was happy with the complimentary appetizer of tossed cucumber. I also heard they specialize in fish, but I didn't have a chance to try it out. I have also heard they have dim sum on the weekends, which is a personal favorite of mine. Overall, I want to come back and try the other things that I couldn't experience. Maybe I've just been choosing the wrong dishes. Some genuine Chinese places have low ratings as it's not so much about appearance or service but rather just food. Li Wah is a nice restaurant. It is modern and clean, comfortable and stylish. There is plenty of parking and the service is very good. On a road trip between Maine and Tennessee, we thought we would take advantage, one last time, of good Chinese before we returned to the patchy Chinese restaurants of Nashville. We started with wonton soup and egg rolls. It was a fair, if not great, start. Then we had stir fried vegetables with rice. It was sensational. We also had a selection of dim sum which was also very good. We couldn't manage any desert. The portions here were massive. The good news is that all of this came in at a bargain price. FOR FIRST TIMERS They start rolling out their full options for lunch around 11am-11:30am, so if you're looking for a favorite dim sum dish, try not to come too early. Dim sum is served on the traditional dim sum carts- there may be a language barrier for those who cannot speak Chinese, but pointing to the food always works :) .. If there is a dish you are waiting for and haven't seen on the carts, you can always flag down a waiter/waitress and ask them to bring it to you. Expect a wait if you are coming around 12pm; luckily, with the hustle and bustle, most of the dishes will also be fresh and piping hot. Their waiting system consists of a line where tables ready for a certain number customers are called out. FOOD Li Wah is the best authentic Cantonese dim sum you will find in Cleveland. Overall, you will not find a level of detail to their dim sum that other dim sum restaurants may offer at larger cities; for example, some of their dishes may not offer the same level of finishing (extra vegetables, ingredients). However, the preparation, flavors, and textures are all well prepared. We've found Li Wah to excel at rice dishes, like their sticky rice in bamboo and congee. I noticed that there are a lot of references to the Dim Sum here. Unfortunately I came here for an event and didn't get a chance to get the authentic "Dim Sum" experience here. We got a buffet specially for the event I was attending. Only dim sum dishes I got to try were the har gow, shumai and the steamed buns. I think the har gow and shumai were decent and the steamed buns were dry. The other dishes we tried included noodles, cream cheese wontons, sesame chicken and something else I can't remember. I work in the mid-town area and have been eating at Li Wah for over 15 years. This past weekend, I decided to take my family for lunch. The prices have really gone up and the service has gone down. The owner or manager accosted our table from the moment we sat down about ordering dim sum. My husband and I (along with our children) wanted to order off of the regular menu. He was rude, pushy, arrogant and condescending. We had to ask for silverware. We had to ask for drinks. We had to ask for more napkins. They forgot our appetizers. I normally don't complain. Service today was very very mediocre. There were four of us . One person ordered a steak. It was horrible and nothing but gristle. I suspect my dog would even turn his nose up at it. Another meal came out ice cold. Another meal came out different than was ordered. They never brought water . There is a mandatory 18% service charge. When I told my server that my meal was cold he looked at me like so what !!!! We asked them to replace the gristle steak and she looked dumb founded that we would ask for something different. I would not recommend this restaurant to my worst enemy. We loved our wedding food! We ordered appetizers, 2 main and 4 side dishes. We also got sesame balls as part of our dessert tables. The process was mostly smooth, the food came on time, and the food was delicious - the sesame balls were especially popular! One thing that made things tricky was not knowing exactly how many servings there were for each dish, and we had to guess how much food to order. We ended up ordering way too much food - had four trays of food we never even opened, but luckily we were able to donate it to a childrens' music camp. Figuring out how many servings each tray has would save customers stress and money, and possibly food waste. Dim sum. I love dim sum. This restaurant is huge and was severely packed (with a line out the door) when I visited. The wait was not bad though, which made my hangry tummy so happy. There were some dishes that didn't strike my fancy (like the eggplant and the chicken feet) but the quality was there. This place caters to a non-Asian palate. Coming from the nyc area, I had a really hard time liking any of the dishes here. The service was great however and I have heard this is the best place in Cleveland. So if you want a fix, this would be the place to go. The tofu skin rolls only had pork in it (not the usual bamboo and mushroom mixture) and somehow the skin was dry and rubbery (despite being in a sauce). The shrimp rolls were over cooked. The rice noodle outside fell apart and had no chew. The xlb were completely broken when they arrived to the table. The sticky rice in banana leaf had almost no filling just lots of rice The shrimp shumai were ok. I usually get this with a side of mustard and hot sauce. There are some things that you need to order from the menu that is included because of how it is made and served which wasn't such a big deal. Just show the picture or point to the number and they will get on it right away. It's a halfway decent dim sum spot (can't be too choosy as there aren't too many options around anyways), but I'm mostly a fan of Li Wah's dinner menu. The fact that it really reminds me of Chinese dining halls back on the West Coast helps for sure. They have a variety of traditional dishes that my parents would even be satisfied eating, as well as other dishes that cater towards more Western palates. You'll do best by bringing someone familiar with ethnic Chinese food or who can speak the language to get the best service and best recommendations. Would recommend the Peking Duck (with the buns) and Japanese Tofu. Don't forget the Chrysanthemum Tea (if you like herbal teas, that is)! Treat your servers well, and they'll take care of you. It's perfect for both big groups, families, or a friendly outing. There's even a sectioned-off banquet room for really large parties. The prices are higher than other Chinese places around, but nothing outrageous. We have been here twice for dim sum. There can be a long line but it moves very quickly, especially if you are willing to combine parties with others to get a bigger table. The location is in a shopping plaza with a grocery, pharmacy, a number of small shops, and another restaurant. The variety of dim sum is good, however, it is hard sometimes to get the cart you want and they do not seem to come by as quickly as we would like. We would waited a good ten minutes before another cart would come by. The chicken feet, peaking duck, and egg pancake were awesome. My son loved the pork spring rolls. Also, some of the best wonton soup I have ever had. The waiter for drinks is practically non existent...no refills for the majority of the meal. Bright red columns with gold Asian writing in then. It's a large restaurant that can accommodate a lot of people and large parties. Clientele: there are a lot of Asian people here. That's a good sign. Anybody who loves this type of food could be here. Food: I personally think it's excellent. Good Chinese is hard to find. This is as authentic as it gets.
