Probably the best cocktail I've ever had was here :) Bartender Greg kicked ass with a "Seriously Dangerous". I have *no idea* what he put in there, but it was very tasty and perfectly mixed. The bar is really impressive with its fresh fruit and herbs selection that gets mixed into these cocktails. Drinks are a bit pricey, but it is Hollywood afterall. The ambiance is dimly lit, slightly seductive and perfect for a date. Plus it's haunted, so that makes is more exciting, never knowing what might pop out at you! I went into this place fully expecting to give it a 5 star yelp review. My wife and I love cocktails, and this notion that they get all of their ingredients daily from a Farmer's Market and then custom design each cocktail for you based upon what flavors you like and what ingredients they have sounded awesome. That said, I think the bartender we had was working her first night, and the drinks we had were good and not great. I would not hesitate going back, though, next time I'm in the area. read more

This is, quite simply, craft cocktail heaven. The bartenders only use the freshest ingredients, many of which they prepare themselves. For example, my first cocktail had pineapple juice in it, except here it was chunks of pineapple muddled with the liquors and then strained. When you walk in, you're struck by the smell of herbs. The top of the bar is virtually entirely concealed by fresh, green herbs sitting in jars of water. This is not the place to order, or expect, a simple classic like a martini or old fashioned. (Although, if you insist, they can certainly do them well.) Nor does the bar have a particular wide variety of spirits. This isn't the sort of place with ten different bourbons. Clearly the investment is made in the highest quality ingredients to make cocktails. The bartenders prefer that you tell them the sort of thing you like and then let them do their magic. For my second cocktail, I was interested to try something with marischino liquor in it. We chatted a bit about the options, and I ended up with the bartender's own variation of "The Last Word," that replaced the gin with rye and the green chartreuse with yellow. I think he was feeling especially nice to me because he used Whistle Pig as the base spirit. The drink was perfectly prepared and amazing. Another drink I absolutely recommend is "Last Tango in Modena." The ingredient list is pretty simple, and, classically constructed but get this - it is made from muddled strawberries, gin, and 25-year-old balsamic vinegar. These three ingredients are shaken hard and poured into an old-fashioned glass. The drink is then topped with a St. Germain foam. Unbelievable! Many reviewers comment on the price of the drinks that is admittedly high. Given the labor and love that goes into this project, it's honestly modest and it wouldn't surprise me if the Library Bar was not particularly profitable. Certainly the bartenders are going that extra mile spending their down time making their own infusions and syrups. If you have the money for a few high-priced drinks and are interested in experiencing the craft cocktail movement at its absolute finest, then the Library Bar is the place. It will spoil you for anyplace else. read more

Came here on a Saturday night and the place was too crowded. The line by the door was alright. It. Moved and it was a legitimate line because it was pretty busy inside. The bar was too small for the amount of people there. It takes forever to grab a drink. I wasn't too fond of the vibe either. Everyone there seemed a little standoff-ish. Maybe there was an event there that attracted a special kind of douche. I will give this place three stars because the venue actually was really nice and plenty of other people I know have said good things about it. I must have gone on an off night. LOVE, this place! Wow. Visited on a Saturday evening which just so happened to be the night of an AFI film festival event. A lot of the main lobby was blocked off which sucked! However we stumbled upon the Library Bar and were quite impressed! We went ahead and did the $17 mixologist thing. I told him I like pineapples and fruity sweet drinks. He whipped up by far one of the best alcoholic drinks I've ever had. So, So good. And totally worth the money. I really enjoyed the atmosphere and everyone inside was friendly. The only downside is finding somewhere to sit. It is very small. We lucked up and grabbed two seat at the bar. Anyway, totally recommend this place! Can't wait to go back! read more

Extremely impressed by the innovation here. Drinks are made to cater to your tastes so as long as you know what you like... then you should be okay. Friend asked for an old fashioned and he received the best twist on an old fashioned that I've ever had. I ordered something herbally and then got a gin-based cocktail with basil, arugula, and berries which tasted like... arugula (pretty much a salad). Wasn't my favorite but the other drinks were good. This place still has a good cocktail, but it's not what my fiancé and I were expecting. We absolutely LOVED this place... until now. The beauty of coming to this place was the fact that they had fresh fruit and herbs and anything you could think of to make custom drinks. There was NO menu. Today we came in anticipation of an amazing drink that we could make up off the top of our heads from the fresh ingredients in front of us. Needless to say they put a menu in front of us and turned this place into another regular cocktail bar! There are too many of those around here! The drink is good, however there is no appeal to this place vs the next cocktail place. Same old shit different day. My fiancé and I were looking forward to a fun night out where our imaginations got us drunk.. not another mindless cocktail bar. I see no appeal to this place. It's small, expensive, and that's about it. So few books we weren't even sure why it was called "Library Bar." On a Friday night, only 1 bartender working so drinks took forever to get for our group of four. So little seating inside the bar, we had to hang outside in the hotel. Awesome. I'm not really a $20 cocktail type of girl, so of course I almost died when the bartender handed me whatever he made for me in a small ass glass and told me it was $18. Yeah, the ingredients were fresh, blah blah blah, but I have a hard time paying $18 for something I could have made at home for about $2. You HAVE to go at least once. The bartender is indeed an artist. He asked us what kinds of drinks we liked, then sort of riffed on those ideas to create a different drink. Fun concept! Our group had five drinks between us; the majority of them were a-may-zing, and the minority were at least tasty and different. But I do have a few reservations. First, the drinks come in modest-sized glasses with HUGE ice cubes, so after a few sips, they're gone. Really? At these prices, you've trying to save by skimping on quantity? Second, food is available, but there's no menu. When we asked, the bartender suggested three kinds of flatbreads. That seemed to be it. But when one of us asked if we could get olives, he suggested a Mediterranean plate. We had that, and we liked it very much. Come to find out, though, that there's a menu on the website, with lots of other items that sound quite good; why couldn't he just have handed us that? read more

Amazing mixologist and cocktails. It's a pretty chill place. I liked that the herbs and fruits were displayed on the bar. You definitely know they are using quality ingredients. They don't have a menu, you just tell them what you want or like and they'll whip up something for you. I'm very picky about drinks so I was a little worried. But I told them something sweet and maybe with basil? The bartender made me a blackberry basil mojito. It was out of this world yummy!! Also try the Yellow Bell, they do a fire show and light the thing on fire. Pretty amazing and the drink was delicious. A little pricey ($16 a cocktail) but its definitely worth trying. After going to some other bars in LA, the drinks are just as expensive and no where near as good. And if you don't like your drink in any way, just let the bartenders know and they'll fix it for you. read more

It's not that big of a place but its nice to visit--I have never been on a Saturday until last night--which was a interesting crowd. Matt Biancaniello is one of the most amazing and innovative mixologists in the country. His drinks bring a unique creativity and flavor profile and he is a very interesting guy to speak with while enjoying a drink or two. Matt spends time at the farmers market cultivating the ingredients for his cocktails. The drinks are amazing and the 17 step Blody Mary has more ingredients than most meals! I recommend going to the bar and simply selecting an alcohol and have Matt make a drink that inspires him on that particular day based on the ingredients that he has assembled on the bar. I had been wanting to try out the library bar for sometime, so bf & I finally went last wk in Dec 2010, don't remember the date but it was on a week night. Chris was our server & we sat at the bar b/c I wanted to get the whole experience w/the fresh ingredients that everyone on Yelp spoke about. So, we walked in, sit & I ask if they have a specialty drinks menu & Chris says no, we go by flavors our patrons enjoy & create a drink from that. I was caught off guard. I had to think a bit about what I wanted. I told him nothing sweet for me (I hate sweet chicky drinks). Even though I am a chick. My bf was driving so he got a beer in the bottle for $7 a Stella artois I believe, overpriced. I got my dink in a large martini glass very cool. I was eager w/delight and couldn't wait to try what he made me. The drink was a clear brownish color.....hmmm....so I take a gulp & shit it taste like freakin' NyQuil, yuk. All my happiness vanished. I drink my personal martini anyway....according to yelpers, drinks here are "suppose to be stiff". I try to gulp it despite the taste. I got more of a buzz from my first excitement of being there but that's it. No stiffness to drinks....which is lame again due to the pricing of them. To get a buzz here you would need to drink lots more but the prices restrict you from doing so. Unless you get something straight up & neat. I was thinking of a second drink, just to give him another chance. Meanwhile, my boyfriend & I were chatting w/him about drinks and he showed us the stuff he uses (alcohol) in the drinks. Everything there for the personal made drinks is made from imitation alcohol which came out to $15-$16 dollars each (mine did)---total rip off. I would expect top of the line alcohol for those prices...but I guess since it is the Roosevelt they have to charge high. The items that were fresh were the garnishes and fruit if asked to be made in your drink. My second drink was a sparkling wine mimosa type w/fresh mixed berries. This one was a bit better than the NyQuil first drink I had--but it did not whoa me. Chris said that the bar was going to get a facelift/remodel soon, which should look like a chemistry lab b/c the way that bar is run now is old fashion for its standards. Chris was a very knowledgeable bartender, he has "skills." =) This bar is just hype. It is good to go try once. If you go make sure you have a fat wallet with you. The bar is tiny inside, about 4 or 5 seats at the bar & 3 tables around behind the bar. It's good to go early before the crowd comes in about 8 or 9 pm ish if you want to sit down and relax. If I ever returned here again I'd get a Booker or Elijah Craig straight up. Good stuff. read more

My husband and I went here as a night cap for our anniversary after we saw it on the tv show "Drinking Made Easy." The bartender, Alex, was great! He was so nice, it was almost shocking. He took our drink order by asking what we like such as sweet, spicy, do we like ginger, jalapeno, etc. Then he created our drinks with fresh ingredients. I do not remember the name unfortunately, but my first drink was something along the lines of a Red Bombshell in Amsterdam and it was the best mixed drink I have ever had. I normally don't like vodka and I don't like sugary drinks (they always make me nauseous) but this one was perfect. It hid the taste of the vodka, was sweet enough and had a tough of mint. So good! Again, we cannot remember for the life of us what the name of the drink was called, but my husband had the Dangerously (something) and he loved it as well. Place is cramped, dark, unimpressive. Vibe maybe it was an off Sat. night but take an actor/actress out of the mix and you're left with aging creepers lurking in the corners. Bar some call it "innovation", it seems more like a "make your own smoothie bar" to me. & as my $18 drink tasted more like a nectar than an alcoholic concoction, you can imagine I felt gypped. & after the experience to receive my credit card statement and find either my server Danvy or some other "innovator" back there penned themselves an inflated tip on my receipt - 100% tip to be exact - come on, really? Can be somewhat romantic in there when it isn't too crazy. Overall upscale classy vibe going on, I usually find that most of the people there are hotel guests who were looking for a good cocktail. A lot of them frequent the place every time they visit LA. Best seating is definitely at the bar, but there's only 4 chairs so that can be difficult to come by. Come open, tell them what you're interested in and then they'll match it in a drink. DO NOT ORDER BEER you're wasting the experience!!!!!!!!!! The Library Bar is dark and private with comfortable, overstuffed chairs and a design scheme that only LA can floss; I absolutely adore it. This place is a teeny, tiny gem in the lobby of the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. The quarters are small, but each sitting area can easily be transformed into a private island with the right company. This bar is run by incredibly meticulous mixologists who are Serious about their craft. They were the cool kids in chem lab. And I am grateful for their dedication to the basic sciences and awed by their inspired approach towards alcohol, fruit, spice and seasoning. It is more expensive than the average bar and each drink requires concentration (read: time) from the mixologist, but the wait (in minutes and coin purse) is totally worth the experience. Should the bar get to standing room only, there is plenty of room to sprawl in the lobby, though the lobby is cavernous (so it doesn't stay quiet once a few folks begin to gather and gab, as sounds carries very well). read more

Dim with beautiful candle light surrounded by dark wood paneling, vintage curtains, and tufted leather couches...you really feel like you have stepped back in time and are having a naughty evening in someone's formal library office. This small intimate setting is perfect for a date or small group as the seating is limited. You know that awful feeling when you can't get to the bar tender to order your drink? - Well I was pleasantly surprised when the talented mixologist, Danbi (spelling?) stepped around to meet with us personally to learn our drink tastes. There is no drink menu, so you express your favorite flavors (fruity, spicy, herbal, etc) and your favorite liquor (gin, rum, vodka, etc). She then brings out a masterful work of art topped with fresh elements of berries and fruits- the whole drink was so incredibly smooth and went down like butter! I was with three other people and loved their drinks equally as much. Flavors like Blackberry Current Leaf, Rasberry Cucumber, and Cilantro Bellpepper will blow you away and raise your cocktail standards forever! If you want a hip, chic, vintage LA experience with your closest friends, Library Bar at the Roosevelt is an excellent choice! read more

It wasn't crowded at all but the bartender recommended nothing even when I asked. He said i have whiskey, gin, vodka, etc... Yeah, I can name liquors too that wasnt my question. My brother and I stopped in to the Library Bar on a recommendation from a bartender at Black Mkt. This place is outstanding. We had started out with whiskey that evening, and Matt and his team created some incredibly memorable cocktails for us. My favorite was a coffee infused cynar old fashioned. A seriously great place. The $16 drinks were worth every penny when you see the amount of effort that goes into them. Not to mention the fresh ingredients. The bar is covered with a bountiful spread of the finest fruits and veg the Farmer's Mkt can offer. They offer small plates from a restaurant in the hotel, but the food quality didn't come close to the mastery behind the bar. read more
