This is a pretty good place that was recommended by some co-workers. The challenge was getting there due to construction just about everywhere along the route. However, we did get there. Anyway, we ordered the combination fried rice, and two vermicelli bowls: mine with BBQ pork and spring rolls, the husband's with beef. The rice had an awesome flavor. If it was MSG, bring it on. So tasty. My bowl was also very good. The spring rolls not so much. Hardly any filling. The husband thoroughly enjoyed his bowl and scarfed most of the rice. The restaurant sits on its own enclosed by a fence plot of land with its own parking. The area is a mixed retail/residential setup. Kind of odd. Take a right out of the parking lot onto Fratt Road and you eventually hit Rittiman Road. We should have come in this way. Definitely easier going home. The place has two TVs on the wall, one set to CNN, the other to a cooking show, I believe. I have to admit because of the difficulty getting here, it might not be on our regular rotation. I live in Houston, and am Việt, so when I say their food is Authentic, that is verifiable. If you are someone who is a "tourist," when it comes to Việt food, and or just into foods that are "pretty," or care about the slick decor of the place, then this is not your thing... Me and my family go to this place about once every two or three weeks, the food is so fresh. We love the vermicelli but they also have many more good items. It is very nice to have such fresh food nearby! I would recommend this to any who would like Vietnamese food. read more

Cash or check only? Good thing I had my checkbook with me! Service? Let's just say we were asked if we were ready to order every ~20 seconds. In a rush, much? I ordered the egg noodle soup with duck leg while my coworker got the banh cuon. She said hers was okay. She was glad they had the dish on the menu though as it's not common here in SA. My dish--hmm....I've had it where the duck leg is marinated/roasted so it was much better than how they serve it at Lien Hung. I ate it because I was hungry. Lien Hung---it's a secluded hole-in-the-wall with half the menu being Chinese dishes. At least that's what I could have time to glance at after being rushed to order several times. Once we rung up (writing out our checks), we decided to be generous and add tip anyway (even though no one came to our table after food was brought out). Been coming here since mid-1990's when introduced to it by a food aficionado friend who served multiple tours of duty in Vietnam. He fell in love with the Vietnamese people and their food during his war-time service. Lien Hung was his favorite Vietnamese restaurant in SA, and he said it served the most authentic Vietnamese food he had eaten outside of 'Nam. It's by far the best I've had--Lien Hung has set the bar high and no other place in SA has come close! My favorite dish here is the lemongrass chicken served with white rice. I recently moved to the San Antonio area and they lack on Pho and/or Vietnamese restaurants in general. I'm originally from Austin and there is one on every corner. But I've tried seriously ALL the pho restaurants in San Antonio. Hands down this is the best bowl of pho in San Antonio. The neighborhood is kinda sketchy and it reeks outside but when I walked in I smelled the aroma and forgot about it. The menu is extensive. They have both Vietnamese and Chinese dishes. Spring rolls and summer rolls are delicious! I'm Asian and I know NOT to order chinese food at a vietnamese restaurant. Kinda like how you don't order sushi at a thai restaurant. So I couldn't tell you about the chinese food. The service sucks but it's like that at all Vietnamese places. They come once to give you water and take your oder and you don't ever see them after that. So don't expect the best of service. They'll know you'll be back so they don't care. If you've just got done watching Anthony Bourdaine's the Layover and you're feeling a bit adventurous you might want to give Lien Hung a try. Honestly, this place is one of the best restaurant I've ever been to. It feels as if I'm actually in Vietnam. The food tastes homemade. Do yourself a favor and order a dish called: "Hu Tieu"( who-teo). Make sure to order it with the clear vermicelli noodles and make sure to garnish your soup with a lot of bean sprouts and cilantro to enhance the flavor. Add a little bit of Sriracha sauce because that too enhances the soups flavor. If you're feeling a bit tired from all the driving you might want to try their Vietnamese iced coffee with condense milk. You won't be craving for Starbucks anymore that's for sure. Bring $20 dollars and a date and you're golden Pony-boy. *It's in a ghetto area but that's what makes it a more unique experience. read more

We have been many times to Lien Hung. Pho #6 is the best for Seafood lovers. Down an off frontage road. Not pretty, service by the waitress is minimal... but when they get to know you, they are very friendly and give good service. No Credit or Debit accepted, just cash or checks. I'm shocked that this place has decent reviews. Maybe it's because I have gotten used to eating pho for years in dense Asian communities in San Diego and San Francisco, but this place was such a disappointment! The menu only lists 5 kinds of pho (no tripe or additions beyond well done steak, brisket, tendon, and meatball), very plastic/hard meatballs, small bowls (all 105lbs of me ate the bowl easily), lemons instead of limes, and very under flavored broth. If you're used to eating great pho where the very thinly sliced steak cooks in the broth then, I wouldn't recommend this place at all. My husband had the sesame chicken and he said it was meh at best. The egg roll that came with it looked like it came from a high school cafeteria and had no discernible ingredients inside (eg bits of mushroom or carrot). He eats everything, but didn't even finish that. Normally in vietnamese restaurants we order egg rolls as an appetizer but this place sold them for almost $2/each so we passed (which he said good thing that we didn't buy a whole plate of them). He said his rice seemed day old and dry. My pho and his chicken was about $20. We will continue our search for another pho place and won't come back here. read more

There aren't many vietnamese restaurants in this area, but the food is not bad. The pho is like pho anywhere else, but I especially like the egg noodles and the porridge. They have a special menu that changes every day/week(?), which I would recommend you ordering from as well. They've recently fixed up the front so it's actually pretty clean looking now. read more

Lunch review. We were promptly seated, given waters and tea, and after that it felt like forever before our app came out which we couldn't even put a dent in before the phó came out. Summer rolls (both shrimp and pork) are standard, the peanut sauce was great, and the egg rolls tasted freshly made even though fried. As for the phó.....watery, doesn't have that hearty meat soaked taste to it. The herb add ons were nice and fresh, the basil and cilantro leaves were such a pretty green. Everyone in the group seemed satisfied. In summary, minus one star for slow service, and another star for mediocre broth. They do use fresh ingredients though and are friendly! I ordered the vermicelli with pork and it was nice cool lunch for a very hot day. I like the fish sauce they offer for the noodles. Love the cucumber and lettuce in the dish. The were few cucumber with skin on and it was bitter to bite. Overall good food. Too bad they only take cash because I could not order an egg roll. read more

Not bad ! I had passed this place a few times and always cars out front. Place is nothing fancy but the food was good. I was a little shocked it was 10.00 for sesame chicken thiugh. But other food inside looked legitimate and authentic. Looks like they may live in the attached building and the restrooms are a bit truck stopish but again food was good. Chicken was crispy. The rice was plain cooked with egg. I dont know if they offer pork fried or other rices i wasnt offered. The egg roll was pretty small, not the normal larger ones you het and dint seem to be the same stuffing but was still good. read more

My dad and I have been going here for years. It never really phased him that they only take cash or check since he is old-fashioned lol. We always get the wonton noodle soup (mi wonton), the main reason for me giving them five stars. They're not cheap with the bean sprouts or cilantro. The summer/spring rolls and the sandwiches are good too. Every once in a while, on a cold day, my sister will order chao (rice porridge). They always come out with the food pretty fast, even on a busy Sunday morning. Their service is pretty blunt and quick, but it's good--I don't expect too much at a hole in the wall Asian restaurant. They've never messed anything up for me, but the one time they did for my sis (she is extremely particular) it was quickly remediated. The family that runs this place is also nice. I'm very surprised at how low of a position and ratings for this restaurant seems because although I've left San Antonio since 2010, every chance I get when traveling there I always make it a point to go back to this restaurant and they never fail me. It's probably my favorite of all types of restaurants in San Antonio. It gets a 5 stars even though I have lived and travelled in many states since. Of all the Vietnamese Restaurants that I've tried in Kentucky, New Jersey, New York, DC, Virginia, Honolulu, Maryland, Guam and West Virginia, there is not one I've been to after leaving San Antonio that makes the same Pho broth like these folks can and I stand firm on that conviction. I know this because I've dined there almost every week for 5 years during our military tour there. It's been a while but I look forward to the next trip that will take me back to San Antonio so I can visit my favorite restaurant. read more

Apps ("spring roll" and shredded pork roll) weren't great and the steak pho wasn't amazing either. Pretty plain but lots of meat.

My husband and I love the pho here! We also love the shrimp seafood rolls. We come here quite often!
